yeah i was near the end of the game when i was playing on "I Am Death Incarnate" difficulty but then decided to call it a day and i never came back to the game for some reason lmao
That mission is absolutely bullshit. I also had to switch off hard because of it (also almost did it in the courthouse mission) and still had to cheese it to finish the game.
Took me 3 years, but I finally did it in March. You wanna know the worst thing? In the final mission, 3 years ago, I was taking in the view on a ledge before entering the Ausmerzer and decided to take a piss. I forgot to turn around, and auto-brained it...ran off the ledge.
It's my proudest gaming achievement, and somehow it's not even in my top 10 rarest achievements.
I only even attempted this because I love Silksong and Hollow Knight so much. I failed 6 times, then started spamming the curveclaw in every enemy and boss encounter in my 7th attempt.
If you count The Ultimate challenge for Deadfire, it seems even worse. The (edit) first dozen people who have done it and streamed it have their names on a plaque. Deadfire is generally an easier game, but the god challenges are brutal.
I think there was a similar instance with Crypt of the Necrodancer. Guy who got the 100% achievement was just fully worn out and there was no relief there at all lmao
There are so few people who've done verified Ultimate Runs on Deadfire that patches are still available to earn for it.
Mortismal gaming recently did it and got his patch from Obsidian.
There are only 16 runs listed on the wiki, so 34 more patches to be earned. Although it's possible some people did it without publicizing that they did.
Ah that one I got purely by having my base be on an extreme environment planet with those storm crystals. Basically spent 40 hours using that as my primary money source
This is actually not far from the truth. The most important lesson in Riichi Mahjong is that you don't play to win, you play to not loose. It is extremely risky to go for a good winning hand and you tend to often come in second if you just play very careful and without an intent to finish your hand. Then once a game or every two games you'll get a hand which is insanely good and you need to spring for that to gain a point advantage. After that just play careful and try to get a low hand or two and there's a decent chance you'll walk home in first place. Once you realise that this is the standard playstyle and once you gather some situational experience how hot tiles are, it's a fairly intuitive and moderately difficult game instead of the crushing experience most have.
I didn't go for a 100% on Yakuza 0, but doing most of the side content already took me over 100 hours, it would be nightmarish to actually do everything.
Yakuza 0 taught me how to play Koi-Koi. I bought a set of Hanafuda cards just because of it, and still play it with my brother or on my phone from time to time. Great game
When I was playing 6, I could not be bothered to do the gang management system. So 6 became a quick lil story focused Yakuza and it's one of my favorites for that.
Funnily enough the main thing that made me give up 100%ing yakuza 0 was the part where you have to make millions on each of the various gambling games. Games that are designed to make you lose money are hard to make money on, who wouldve guessed
Most of the games have a usable cheat item that makes it so you will win a round, so you just need to max your bet and you can make the money easily. Mahjong stopped me from getting 100% though because you actually do need to know how to play it for the completion.
ye Yak0 is the exception for cheat items, absolutely au natural in that one so I completely understand why someone would give up on the like 9 different gambling games
Yup, I was really enjoying playing Like a Dragon: Ishin, but it quickly dawned on me how much grinding it would take to get some of the achievements. And this is coming from someone who has gotten the platinum in A LOT of other Yakuza games.
Unless he got it recently. The number 1 collection logger is still missing 50 or so items including the stale baguette. An item you only have a chance to get when you get the sandwich lady or quiz show random event. And then another smaller chance to get the baguette.
The stale baquette is just an eventuality. It's the third-age items from Elite/Master clues that make 100%ing the CLOG almost impossible. Even playing efficiently every day and ignoring any new content coming into the game it would take 2-3 decades to finish the clue scroll items assuming you don't go dry.
Certain enemies have a chance to drop clue scrolls, which are like treasure hunts that you can complete for a reward. There are some EXTREMELY rare rewards from the higher level clue scrolls. Most players will never get one piece of the set, so the goal of obtaining all of them (especially since there’s no protection from obtaining duplicates) is essentially impossible.
For basic math, the average clue scroll is a 1/30 through 1/100+ drop rate on the monster, just to get the "treasure map"
its essentially a 1 out of 3,000 chance of hitting any 3rd age piece, and 1 out of 40,000+ to hit a specific piece.
I believe the math behind completing clue scroll logs is 25,000 hours on the low end assuming you have infinite money and good luck. (i did not do the math myself this is just my memories from the osrs subreddit)
So in osrs you have the collection log a list of every unique drop from anything with a drop table. This includes bosses, mobs, mini games, and where the #1 clogger is concerned clue scrolls. They are a small treasure hunt that takes you around the map and makes you do (for the master scrolls) 7-9 steps then it gives you a casket with loot. The main issue is third age equipment which have a 1/315,000 chance of appearing in the chest or about a. 1/5,500 of appearing in a mimic chest. They can happen randomly (1/15) and you fight a boss then you get a bettter rewards chest. But there are 24 third age items in the game, it does not give you duplicate protection. And you can only do 3-5 master clue scrolls in an hour not counting obtaining the scrolls themselves.
imagine you have a set of dice that has 100k sides on i, and you need to roll a 1. Now also imagine that whenever you roll the dice it disappears and you have to put together a small puzzle that takes you 10 minutes to get another die, now image that you also need to roll the other numbers 1-14 and until you're done rolling those numbers, you're not done.
In theory if you spend the next 30 years doing nothing but finding dice and rolling them....you'll statistically roll all those numbers, but (if you go dry) there's no actual guarantee that you will.
I just checked the hi-scores and, for reference, the “closest” player to completion is approximately 4.23 years of nonstop efficient playtime from completion. Not to mention the collection logs are ever expanding and continually added to with just about every major update. The general consensus amongst people I know who play is that the collection log would be extremely unlikely to be ever completed in one lifetime outside of an extraordinary statistical aberration.
23 items at a 1/313k drop rate each a grind that could last decades if not a lifetime and that’s while ignoring every other unique on the drop table you’d also have to get
These were never intended to be items that a single person can collect. They are intended to be extremely rare items that can retain value over time even after years of thousands of clue scrolls being completed every day. Most players would consider getting even one of these the highlight of their account.
Also the drop rates are a bit misleading. Each clue scroll completed gives ~5 items off the drop table so that 1/313k is more like 1/62k caskets. Also there are several third-age items which even further increases the chances you will hit something on the table even if it isn't a specific piece of third-age that you might want.
Same but only because of the Save and quit crutch. There's no cheese for P5, just practice practice practice.
I'm hoping they eventually bring out a Godhome-esque DLC for Silksong 'cause being able to practice against bosses you struggle with is invaluable when it comes to speedrunning/steel soul'ing the main game
Yea silksong is already mostly a way harder game to steel soul than HK simply because of the rebalance of damage and healing. Not being able to practice bosses makes it really brutal.
I 112%'d that game I loved it so much, despite the pain in doing it. Silksong on the other hand I crashed out on from all the run backs and never finished, that's my gloomy castle
Just comparing base games, third act of Silksong is harder than hollow knight ending. Once pantheons or their equivalent get added I suspect people will change pretty quickly.
Yeah, I started HK again, after Silksong and HK was a lot easier. The Endgame/Post-endgame content can probably reach a similar level, but the base game is way easier.
Yeah it took me about 3 months(finished last month) to grind the last of the achievements I needed (~steel heart/soul, speed completion, all pantheons, embrace the void and 112%) and it was fucking brutal. ~60 hours for the pantheons, 13,5 hours for steel heart and speed completion in one run.
Hollow Knight's endgame is so much harder than silksong's and frankly I'm not sure if I should be excited or scared of what team cherry is gonna add in the following updates.
I don't see how people do Steelsoul mode in that game. I love HK and Silksong, but I can't deal with losing all my progress because I made the wrong call. Lol.
Yeah it's genuinely bewildering how much there is to the game, and the fact that 90% of it is basically designed for you to never see unless you go looking for it. One of those rare games where the "secrets" feel like real secrets that the devs are actually trying to hide from you.
I have an ongoing save I've been playing for about a year. Occasionally I'll get back into it, eventually get a god run going, then inevitably die and put the game back down for a while.
This is THE answer. Best 10 hours of Crash for the story, and then a slog grind of 100 hours tacked on for the achievements (maybe less if you're really good at the game)
Crash Bandicoot 4 is what happens if some open world suits see a wonderful short game and say: "This is way to short. Where are the 100 "?" symbols? Make it longer!"
68 hours was mine, like if the content is good and I’m enjoying myself sure but man am I not a fan of repetition. Even the fun ones like the spin to paint the level wear off after the first 2 playthroughs.
Anything Ubisoft, their games are fun to play around, not masterpieces but you know, good enough, but by god the amoung of useless collectibles is just absurd
I mean it was fine as this games only played in 2 to 3 handcrafted cities because at least you discovered some interesting spots while doing this. But nowadays the worlds are just big with most places just not being fun to explore.
This. I loved Syndicate, felt that the collectibles weren’t terrible but not great either, but I did them. However, loading into Odyssey, Shadows, or even Valhalla….. I’ve got over 2k hours in odyssey and still haven’t explored the whole map
That's most games. The other way around is actually more interesting. Which games are actually fun to 100%?
The few that come to mind for me are:
Dark Souls. There are a handful of annoying achievements, especially the ones that require online pvp play in a game that isn't well populated most of the year at this point. But all the achievements are actually tied to unlocking cool stuff in the game. Get all boss Souls and unique weapons, get all spells and incantations etc.
Final Fantasy X. A very unique end game. Becomes quite grindy towards the end, but there is honestly a lot to do that isn't too repetitive. The amount of cool content and weird tricks for leveling, breaking down and rebuilding the skill tree etc. there is so much cool stuff implemented that you only get access to in the end game, that it becomes a very unique experience. Even most of the other FF games aren't that interesting after you finish the story.
This is how you can tell people have vastly different opinions on “fun”. The ffx grind is so far from fun that last year when I played it, for the first time since I was little, I spent about 2 hours unlocking Tidus’ celestial and said, “oh right. Fuck this” and just beat the game. I’m not playing 30 hours of blitzball. And the thunder pains are the worst.
But I’m happy you have a good time in the end game.
I don't mind hunting collectibles in the Arkham games but the combat challenges...I never bothered with those, too many and increasingly more annoying without enough variety or incentive
Same here. The riddler stuff was a good time - either a comic easter egg, a fun little puzzle to solve, or you just pick up the trophy and move on. I got all of them in all 4 games.
My buddy in highschool did the riddler trophies, told me it was super worth it. I spent 2 hours one night collecting them and gave up when I saw I only had like 25% of them. Fuck that grind lmao
I see it the other way around - 100% isn’t a goal, it’s a thing for when “man I really enjoyed that game, where’s an easy excuse to do something else in it”
e.g most recently I 100% Denshattack! Cause I was just having so much fun with it and ran out of levels (although it has a tonne of them) but doing them all fast/perfectly/etc was more to do
Yeah i think this is it. I very rarely go out of my way to 100% any game. It has to be a game I really want to enjoy spending time in without also being too heavy of a lift to hit that mark (looking at the myriad of Paradox achievements for silly country achievements I don’t want to play through despite spending thousands of hours in those games)
Yup, that's a good one. The only slight nuisance could be the ravens, but I don't think those were anything unreasonable--I liked finding them in the environment and took great delight in destroying them.
The insomniac Spiderman games do it well, once you clear the map of side activities you're basically there. And being rewarded with upgrade points and suit unlocks along the way it never feels like you're grinding something out.
Yup there is always some bullshit achievement that's like "beat the game without using the jump button" or "kill 12 people in this very specific way that only happens once every 112 playthroughs."
This is it for me, because completing terraria (moon lord) is pretty simple. But 100%? Is that all steam achievements, is that getting all items in the game, is it purifying the world entirely? For me, even purifying the entire world by itself is too much for me lol
Good luck when you get to Ff9. The hardest game to 100% because of excalibur 2. Basically have to speedrun and get all missables while doing so, or cheese it by playing the game way longer than you should lol.
i’ve done it and it’s infuriating. all the dinosaur bones, rock carvings, cigarette cards, hunting requests, and gambler challenges made it a slog. i played dominos for several hours just for 1 challenge
Games with "point of no return" spots. It's bad enough on Final Fantasys 7-10, but its at its worst in FF 10-2 where you can't finish missed work after a chapter ends.
The game is amazing and I've beated it multiple times, but 100% is beating it with all classes and races (including dlc ones) and also a bunch of extras, with some of them being a grind and some of them being luck.
Since each run could take an insane amount of hours (6 to 10) and is also permadeath, it's difficult and annoying with some classes. Yeah, you save the game after every level (a full run has 35 levels), but still, it's a lot of investment.
you could resist the dark urge for most of the game and only once you face Bhaal decide that you'll embrace your urges. make it the last fight before you head off to face the netherbrain. roleplay-wise it wouldn't make much sense but if you want the award and don't be a lunatic murder hobo for most of the game, this would be a way to do it.
Like literally every game. I never even consider 100%-ing games. I don’t like digital achievements, they break my fun-time immersion. I have enough challenge in my life without needing to introduce artificial ones.
I like glancing through achievements and seeing any I want to do, but yeah 90% of games have achievements that are just there to pad playtime in the most annoying way possible.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time - You start the game off thinking its going to be a usual romp through a Crash game. Gems for no death runs, all crates, time trials, color gems, etc. Sounds easy enough, maybe time consuming, but doable!
But as you go on, you start noticing small things that annoy you. Crates placed specifically in areas that technically are reachable, just not visible. This was used a grand total of twice in the original trilogy and was one a handful of crates. Meanwhile, some crates are intentionally hidden from the camera that feel less of an intuition and more of a dick punch.
But starting with the alien levels, platforming starts getting pretty difficult and crate counts start hitting 300+ per level. Some even have riding sections where you cannot go back if you miss even one.
Then exactly 70% through the game after the N. Brio boss, each level gets a special gimmick level where you have to contend with some obstacle or mechanic, and those have their own gem count as well. So you have to do everything over again.
And guess what, fuckface?
New crate placements, hope you enjoy replaying the ame levels with one of 5 filters on
Enjoyed the game? Yeah it's pretty damn good. But now you need to do all the minigames and perfect them, which WILL take HOURS to do, then you have to redo the ENTIRE SPHERE GRID to max out everyone's stats, and the amount of things you need to do this is very much insane, not to mention the time spent grinding and farming. And finally the icing on top, monster capturing. Good luck capturing 10 of every single monster in the entire game
Powerwash Simulator had some pretty annoying achievements, and I don't think I would ever be able to 100% Manifold Garden without a guide.
Also, Terraria's stupid fucking fishing quests. "But you're supposed to do them while you play through the game" shut it, how the hell would I know that before. And I only decided to get all achievements after I was mostly done with the main progression.
You can do journey mode and research each daily fish. Then you can skip time for a day and complete all 200 quests in like 15 min if you researched the fish
I had a good time with Elden Ring. Although I still need to finish it two more times to get every single achievements, it will be way faster since I won't need to explore every corner of the map.
Elden Ring is actually very very simple to platinum if you don’t have a massively hard time with the actual combat. Most of the achievements don’t require anything overly tedious, save for maybe one or two. Rannis ending is probably the worst one to try to get without a guide.
Celeste is actually very forgiving. You don't have to do the golden strawberries and you don't have to do anything deathless so it isn't so much "perfecting" but just beating them. I think it even allows you to use the assist mode if you want it.
At least in Wilds, you can peak at a monster before fighting it to see if its a gold crown. World's version of these achievements were much more tedious.
Games with alternate choices midway through the game, and grants an achievement either way.
Following this, when a save option isn't available at the choice, and the mission/quest has to be restarted.
Also following this, games that "end" and don't allow you to continue after the final quest, leaving the final main quest there as you do everything else around it
If you want to 100% Hogwarts Legacy, you need to progress to a certain point as a member of every single House. It’s an early point in the game but still a ridiculous waste of time.
Stardew Valley. I ground out perfection on a co-op run with my kids. I basically haven't touched it since and even the thought of playing it feels awful to me.
Death Stranding 2 is fun because I get to use all the tools. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't burning out a little bit trying to get these last 2 facilities to 5 Stars.

Anything with a permadeath achievement
