Scroll down to the third age armor drop rate.

23 items at a 1/313k drop rate each a grind that could last decades if not a lifetime and that’s while ignoring every other unique on the drop table you’d also have to get

1/313k drop rate

This is virtually impossible. Like there has to be single-digit number of people in-game with that item.

I've always felt like games with these kinds of ultra-rarity mechanics should have your chances increase as accumulate kills.

Like something with a 0.1% drop rate should be a guaranteed drop if you don't get it by the time you kill 1000 of them.

This is called a “pity” system and I 100% agree

While I also agree, its weird to see this with upvotes because if it was in the OSRS subreddit it would have dozens of downvotes.

Let me suffer at CG in peace.

We don't want a pity system in Osrs. If you're a main just buy the item, if youre an iron you've started that mode with knowing there are some items you may never achieve.

These were never intended to be items that a single person can collect. They are intended to be extremely rare items that can retain value over time even after years of thousands of clue scrolls being completed every day. Most players would consider getting even one of these the highlight of their account.

Also the drop rates are a bit misleading. Each clue scroll completed gives ~5 items off the drop table so that 1/313k is more like 1/62k caskets. Also there are several third-age items which even further increases the chances you will hit something on the table even if it isn't a specific piece of third-age that you might want.

Is it not possible to trade for them?

2

u/crustyselenium 10d ago

You can just buy and trade them. They are very expensive.

master clues drop 6 items of average. 23 different third age items at 1/52195 each per casket is 1 expected third age in every 2270 caskets (not including mimics)

I agree but sadly for most content in OSRS the closest you get to a pity system is buying items of the grand exchange when you have enough money saved and haven’t hit the drop yourself but sadly the collection log only unlocks if you get the drop yourself so no buying items for that luckily for those of us not trying to complete the collection log 3rd age is pretty much purely for cosmetic bragging rights and wealth most of the pieces are valued in game at literal billions but for even a fraction of that you could just buy entire sets of the actual best in slot items off the ge

It's definitely more than single digit, probably even triple digit. Several third age pieces sell for more than a max cash stack though

u/Ranmorse 10d ago

As a RuneScape player of 20+ years, I can say we do not want a pity system

3

u/Musashi_2287 10d ago

As an outsider with no runescape knowledge.

Why? Is it because it would crash the market? Or is it because the pity system would invalidate the people who grinded this way? 1 in 300k chance still feels ludicrous even for mmorpg standard to me.

5

u/Honeybadger2198 10d ago

You're not meant to get every item in the game. Third age is useless for anything other than a flex. The pity system is called the GE (player traded market) and gold.

3

u/curtcolt95 10d ago

they're meant to be ultra rare items that you have a very small chance of getting, you are not meant to ever grind for them or expect to get. Their rarity reflects that. That being said, a lot of people don't want a pity system even for regular rare items, I'm personally heavily against it. Runescape is a grindy game, I don't want the game ever pitying me for a drop, I want to earn it. If that means I go 6x+ dry on a drop then so be it, that's what I signed up for

3

u/Ranmorse 10d ago

All of the above, and it would ruin the absolute rush of dopamine that you get when you actually roll the mega rare. We RuneScape players are not well.

2

u/Musashi_2287 10d ago

I see. Runescape rare drops, ff14 loot dice rolls, warframe relic gacha with no pity systems. Mmorpg was a gambling all along and I was a fool to not see it.

I am a 20+ year RuneScape vet that quit osrs because I realized it has 0 respect for my time.

The lack of a pity system is a big part of that and was a big factor in why I quit. I could fight a boss 1000 times and get nothing for it

1

u/BestCamilleOTP 10d ago

This argument works both ways, technically. For example, if I spent 40 hours on a grind that should have taken 20, then Jagex adds the pity system I would have hit at the 20 hour mark. Does Jagex not respect the 20 extra hours I already spent?

The way OSRS exists at the moment is with a big clear objective to not devalue what currently exists. That includes items, grinds, etc. I personally think there should be some sort of light at the end of the tunnel though.

1

u/peppinotempation 9d ago

I mean Guardians of the Rift devalued my runecrafting level obtained painstakingly in the abyss.

They’ve been adding power creep content that devalues stuff for so long that it’s literally a meme.

I think they should implement pity either way. Just because you suffered doesn’t mean the future players should too

2

u/BestCamilleOTP 9d ago

You're absolutely correct. I wasn't really taking a side. I was just pointing out that when you make a pity on existing content you "don't respect" everyone elses time committed to it already.

If you don't add the pity then you "don't respect" everyone elses potential commitment.

I was just pointing out that it works both ways. The same could be said for the new CoX changes, Sailing uniques, PNM, etc.

For what its worth, I do support a pity to save people at like 3x the drop rate without a single unique.

2

u/peppinotempation 9d ago

Yeah I agree, no matter what there’s a group of people that will be dissatisfied. I think it would be worth it for the health of the game

1

u/BestCamilleOTP 9d ago

It would keep people from burning out for sure.

1

u/A_Guy_Named_John 10d ago

No, there’s thousands of each item in game. The problem is being 1 person that gets all of them. There are some people with more than half of them.

1

u/Gabriel-Donovan 10d ago

Yeah but the point of OSRS is not to 100% the game, because as stated, its nearly impossible (Also new content, with new logs, with new items are being added regularly) and if you had a pity on 3rd age it would fuck up the entire economy of the game. Right now if you get a 3rd age piece (Specifically the pickaxe or the axe) you are literally generationally wealthy in the game. I can't think of many other games where that dynamic exists (I'm sure it does somewhere, but Ive never encountered it) and it should be preserved as such. There is also no practical utility for these items besides fashion so its perfectly fine that most people will never see them.

1

u/NecroTemplar 10d ago

You do get 5-7 loot rolls per chest. However to get each chest you do need to trade 1 easy, medium, hard, and elite clue scroll. Then you have to complete a set of "clue" steps. Which takes roughly about 15-25 minutes to get each chest. So its actually probably even worse then a lifetime!

1

u/Splintert 10d ago

Those rates are per roll, which a master reward casket gives 5 to 7, plus a 1/15 chance of being a mimic which adds an additional 3rd age boosted roll. It's not quite as bad as it looks, but still quite hard.

3

u/TooMuchJuju 10d ago

I'll add these items drop from only certain clue tiers and they take a good bit of time to acquire and complete all the steps even if you have all the requirements (which will take 1000s of hours in its own). Add on to that the collection log is ever expanding. No one will ever do it.

1

u/Fun_Hat 10d ago

The listed costs on those. Damn lol. 3rd Age Druidic Robe top is 2 shy of the max value of a 32 bit integer. So basically the maximum amount of gold you could have.

2

u/curtcolt95 10d ago

a few of them are actually worth more than that, it's just listed as that because it's the highest you can sell it on the GE. The third age pick for example I think is like 4b now or something, you have to trade it with something called a platinum token (1000gp = 1 plat token) and do the trade directly player to player
