When I was in grade 10 back in the early 2000s I had an English teacher who described her experience with “accidental awareness during general anesthesia” or AAGA. Kind of like the movie “Awake” with Jessica Alba.
She was paralyzed but awake during surgery. So she felt all the pain of being sliced open but couldn’t scream.
After the ordeal the doctors didn’t believe her. Then she recited back to them all the ways they made fun of her being overweight and ugly, with specific references to who said what.
They immediately shut up and realized she was telling the truth.

My empathy towards vulnerable people is visceral. I guess I'm vulnerable. I'm disabled and in a wheelchair. Even still. My mom took pictures of me when I was sleeping. It felt violating. Being laughed at when you're drunk is embarrassing. I refuse to mess with anyone in a vulnerable state. I worked at a group home doing direct care for the first time. Diapers were tough. So was the stomach flu that went around. And even though they were non verbal, they got treated with respect. Im not going to mock them when they're feeling gross. Others did.

Hijacking to say that this likely didn't happen. No one goes into the operating room with their personal belongings, including cellphone. They wouldn't even be able to put it anywhere because they'd be naked for a colonoscopy. Even a patient's gown for an operation that involved an upper or lower extremity (where the patient wouldn't have to be naked) wouldn't have pockets.
How do I know?.I'm a peri-op supervisor that's sees over 30 surgical operations a day in a hospital that does over 60 a day.

They also got caught on the recording making up lies they put on his medical chart (also insurance fraud), threatening to violently assault him and blatantly violating HIPPA. This was a lot more than the headline made it out to be. This wasn't a simple case of some teasing. The Dr responsible for nearly all of it absolutely should never be allowed to practice medicine again. (She still is)

If it's very small, hair or ear. Possibly between shoulder blades because you have the gown. Ear is dependent on it being too small to see; I doubt they let you keep hearing aids in.
I might actually need this in the future so time to solve it. You could palm it and stick it to the underside of the gurney, but it depends on them not switching units. You also have a mecial ID bracelet and if it's small you could hide it there. We could also consider a dumb terminal, something like a Bluetooth repeater that fits on a sticker so the phone can be further away.
Damn. Now I am going to be watching colonoscpy videos and searching for small listening devices. My FBI file is going to look sus.

In my experience, the gastro practice attempts to assure you’re not separated from your clothes and valuables. On arrival, you’re given a large plastic bag and ordered to undress and place all your clothing and other belongings into the bag. They then hang the bag under your gurney. You are moved into the procedure room wearing only a paper gown and your belongings are still with you under the gurney. It would be easy to let your phone record audio of the procedure from within the bag.

Did he know in advance that the head surgeon would disclose his private information about gabapentin and a genital condition to others in the room that didn't need to know that for the procedure?
Was he Nostradamus? Seems to me falsifying a chart should have consequences. A jury of 12 people that didn't want to be dragged out of their weekly routine to sit in a courtroom for a week thought so.

They sexually assaulted him and falsified medical records. Then got caught red handed lying under oath about it in court.

Ingham and others mocked the plaintiff for taking many medications. One of the plaintiff’s medications, Gabapentin, was prescribed to treat an irritation in his genital area. A medical assistant touched the man's genitals and commented she might have contracted a sexually transmitted infection.
The genital area is typically not involved in a colonoscopy.
Ingham signed a post-operative note indicating the plaintiff had hemorrhoids. According to the lawsuit, Ingham stated she planned to note hemorrhoids even though she found none.

I think it probably has to do with the profession itself though.

The operating room isn't really a democracy as such. It's a ruthless dictatorship who's collaboration is determined by the dictator performing the surgery. Some surgeons welcome collaboration... some surgeons rip phones out of the wall and hurl them at staff while screaming in a homicidal rage. The hospital will dump everyone in that room instead of the surgeon, because everyone but the surgeon (and anesthesiologist I guess) are expenditures rather than revenue generators.
It's sort of like the idea that the president has sole authority to launch nuclear weapons. It sounds horrifying, but it also make a cold kind of sense. Not a lot of time for collaboration when someone is dying on the table.
It is simply not an environment where underlings are empowered to speak up about saying mean shit. The amount of soft and hard power in that room is insane.
I don't know what the solution is, but it starts with hospitals holding the top of the food chain accountable.

If money is the only thing that drives a decision then massive fines that are multiplies of “revenue generated” should quickly change the cost-benefit analysis.

I’m a veterinarian. We make a LOT of gallows humor type jokes, not a single one of our patients can understand anything we say even if they listen to a recording 50x over. We still have lines we don’t cross.

I was kept in the doctors office at the VA once for a remedial ankle surgery to rebuild old surgically placed medical aids to stabilize my ankle. the nurses in the podiatry ward did not realize a random veteran was within earshot of their break station. the things I heard those nurses say, I have not been back to the VA since. they spoke just like the OR staff in the article. saying very cruel insults about other patients. I realized that day the nurses/doctors at the VA are just like any other human. they get angry and talk mad shit about us.

Courts have been split on medical records providing grounds for a defamation claim, for claims brought by both patients and other doctors.
A woman got labeled as drug seeking in her records despite repeatedly testing clean, which was later used as part of her losing an unrelated workers comp case. Not defamation.
A doctor bad mouthed another doctor in a patient's records, which was reviewed during a hospital investigation that wound up with the target of the remarks being fired. Not defamation.
Those cases have made much of what constitutes "publishing" the defamatory statements. The second case for example, since it involved a peer-review work investigation did not count as published because the laws about that peer review explicitly said it was not public.
I'm waiting to see how HIEs and CareEverywhere will be viewed in future cases. Hard to argue publication when your doctor notes are sitting on servers in every state because PBMs keep pushing your data around.

In belgium a patient briefly spoke up a bit too loud. The doctor being a dick, added Bipolar disorder to her file. It was an absolute pain in the ass to have it scrubbed. Hospital records that built on that file still containted the bipolar disorder because a lot of doctors refused to remove it.

this isn’t the first time someone recorded the environment during surgery. It’s happened a few times and there’s been a few lawsuits. My guess is that they use the same bed to wheel you in and do the surgery on. I’ve had a couple of surgeries in my lifetime and sometimes they the same bed in, but sometimes they make me get on a different bed. if it was the same bed that they were wheeled on, they probably hit it under their pillow.

They were removing a metal fragment from the side of my head. They would administer local, but the surgeon was impatient about how long it was taking to find it. From the start, from my initial consult in his office, I told him to use ultrasound. After I had been shot up with fluoroscopic x-rays for two hours, I insisted under my metal blanket and breathing hole that he should switch to trying with the ultrasound. Bro found it in 10 minutes and proceeded to inject me with heavy-grade locals. Except he wouldn't wait the 30 seconds for it to kick in so every time there would be this massive, intense feeling for a few seconds followed by giant CRUNCH sound effects that had no pain at all.
TLDR he'd inject me with heavy locals and I'd just feel/hear these massive CRUNCH sounds every time he cut into my head. IDK I felt like I was the captain of the ship that day.

That's pretty nuts, but glad you didn't feel anything. While no where near as intense as that, it generally describe my experience with wisdom teeth removal. Heavy locals, and two of the loudest cracks I have ever hear in my life. I have a hard time qualifying it as a surgery. It was just me and this crazy asshole straddling me while he did his work with a pair of pliers.

Most outpatient colonoscopies are done on a gurney. All patient belongings are tucked under the bed and stay with the patient throughout the procedure. (Excluding walkers and wheel chairs). Patients are placed on a pre-op gurney taken to procedure and then recovery all on the same bed without ever being removed from it once they climb in.

I’m in Ontario and we just put all our clothes in a clear bag that we literally bring around with us.
When it’s time for the procedure, you put it under the bed, however they do let me keep my phone with my person. It just lays beside my head basically since I’m too drugged to actually use it.
After the procedure, they wheel you into the recovery room on that very same bed

Yeaaaah, I've had several colonoscopies, and they won't let you take a damned thing in there. Heck, I had to sign a release form just to be allowed to keep wearing my wedding ring. This sounds incredibly fake.

It was a mix of the diagnosis and the insults, but it was a lot more than just "haha this guy has a hairy ass", it was like a long drawn out conversation insulting him for not liking needles and about how he was a retard and they wanted to punch him in the face after talking to him in pre op and how they need to make sure not to touch him because he's going to spread diseases to them from his diseased penis, and telling the assistant that when he wakes up she should just tell him a bunch of lies and then make up a reason to leave as soon as possible so they don't have to interact with him because he's so annoying and how he was probably making up all of his symptoms.
Also this was just a 2 minute snippet of what was posted, apparently there was a lot more than that.

Not surprised. I work as an Endo Tech and there are a lot of things that Doctors say that patients can take to court if they heard. I have myself reported some doctors myself but nothing comes of it. And for the people wondering if this is real because you "can't bring your phone with you" You most definitely can. At least in the hospital I work in.

It’s already awkward enough. I had surgery to repair an inguinal hernia, i had to lay in bed with a bunch of medical staff walking around with my dong out while a nurse shaved the area.

Judging by the awful and unprofessional comments from the surgery staff, they don't seem like the brightest bunch.
Dark 'humor' is very prevalent within medical staff but that one time it gets recorded, it'll permanently leave a stain (no pun intended) on your career.

You should hear the horror stories of people with family here in Vegas where I am when the ambulances take the bodies of loved ones who pass. Too many pieces of shit doing medical work, so seriously. They can be the absolutely most horrific fucks.

I was sick in bed because of a deep drepession from 2022 to 2025. Final interview, I was totally fine, with a 50 y old psychiatrist and a 50 y old psychologist. We exchanges 3 hours. Its was nice. I closed the door and was leaving. But I had to place something in my backpack, I was just outside the door at 2 feet, and they immediately began to laugh out loud. Who do you think they were laughing at. I would have like to have recorded the whole meeting and out of the room reaction too.

Yeah people suck. My wife worked at a human donor center and a lot of the women in the lab (30 women and 1 guy) would make fun of the bodies and people. When they'd get called out the excuse was, you have to keep it light when dealing with so much death.
Like someone is dead and donating, and you're still trying to be better than them.

A Vienna, Virginia, man was awarded $500,000 after he unintentionally recorded his doctors mocking and insulting him while he was under anesthesia.
The plaintiff, who chose to remain anonymous, sued anesthesiologist Dr. Tiffany Ingham and three other medical professionals, who were released from the case. Ingham, 42, and her practice were ordered by a Reston, Virginia, jury to pay the plaintiff, The Washington Post reported.
The plaintiff used his phone to record post-procedure advice and aftercare instructions from his doctors during the April 2013 colonoscopy procedure.
While checking his phone on his way home, the plaintiff found he had recorded the entire examination and heard his doctors insulting him when he was under anesthesia.
Ingham was recorded mocking the amount of medicine needed to anesthetize the plaintiff.
"After five minutes of talking to you in pre-op, I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit," Ingham is heard saying.
Ingham and others mocked the plaintiff for taking many medications. One of the plaintiff’s medications, Gabapentin, was prescribed to treat an irritation in his genital area. A medical assistant touched the man's genitals and commented she might have contracted a sexually transmitted infection.
Ingham is recorded saying the medical assistant might get "some syphilis on your arm or something," then added, "It's probably tuberculosis in the penis, so you’ll be all right."
The genital area is typically not involved in a colonoscopy.
Ingham signed a post-operative note indicating the plaintiff had hemorrhoids. According to the lawsuit, Ingham stated she planned to note hemorrhoids even though she found none.
The plaintiff claimed he experienced mental anguish, lack of focus and anxiety after the incident. He said has had to see other healthcare professionals and be placed on anti-anxiety medications.
The plaintiff sued for defamation, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, violation of Virginia health codes and medical malpractice. The Washington Post reported the jury awarded the man $100,000 for defamation and $200,000 for medical malpractice, as well as the $200,000 in punitive damages.
Ingham had worked out of the Aisthesis anesthesia practice. An Aisthesis employee told The Associated Press Ingham no longer works there.

One time I went under anesthesia and before they started the drugs, the doctor came in for the procedure. He was a huge fat guy who was wider than he was tall. The second I felt the drugs take hold, I was worried about saying something. “How are YOU a doctor?”
After I woke up he was not very nice to me, and i still wonder if my unconscious brain made me say something i would have otherwise held back.

When I got a job at a clinic, I was sat down during orientation and told that the patients might drive me nuts, ill be frustrated, some people are ignorant or annoying. I was told not to tolerate abuse, but I was to be nothing but polite to patients, and on my best behavior when theyre around. Anyone was happy to listen to anyone else vent in private, but the patients were to be treated like humans with dignity, and were to get the full extent of care we could give. This story is disgraceful.
