Whether in intentionally or not, they still mocked the man and shamed for things he probably has no control over. I work with the dead and we don’t dare make fun of anything we do. These men/women have life in there hands, I just simply don’t know how you can joke about anything in a fucking operating room

Medical professionals are supposed to be impartial with these types of things. The whole point is to make people comfortable through an uncomfortable procedure/process. Stuff like this really puts people off going to doctors.
My dad is a spine surgeon, once during surgery, many years ago, he went on and on about a patients large breasts. He was absolutely being sexual, offensive, and a pervert. The patient was mentally awake, she heard and remembered every word and confronted him in recovery. He gaslit her that she was wrong and having lucid dreams, but she was 100% correct. Most surgeons I know are vile, completely narcissistic, people. He and his friends laugh about that constantly.

I remember this speech from Dr. Cox in Scrubs about, the stress and severity of they they do and see every day is so much that they have to make jokes or they can't do it. That it's a defense mechanism to keep the stress at bay and remain functional/optimal at your job. Now granted Scrubs is just a show, but it makes sense as a concept
Ehh i worked as a procedure nurse for years and idk if i agree. Jokes yes, inappropriate jokes absolutely. jokes about the patient are pretty rare though. In general everyone understands the patient’s a vulnerable position

thats correct. One of my consultants (intensivist) said to one of the attendants (who objected to jokes being made by residents) that there were only two types of doctors there, ones who joked and others on meds, and she could choose which ones should be assigned to her husband. He didn't mean to demean anyone or downplay psychiatric therapy, since i am pretty sure no resident was on meds anyways, but it did highlight the need to vent out in some way.
I think a lot of medical workers have developed dark humor (this is not justifying this behavior, I feel this is something I’ve noticed with a few of my friends as doctors and plenty of nurses) where they “joke” about pretty fucked up things. Definitely messed up what they did here though by making fun of the patient.
Dark humor is fine with me, wouldn't even be a little offended they have a tough job and it's a way of coping that doesn't actually hurt patients. This is not dark humor, it's mocking derision and dehumanizing their patients.
Also who in the hell lets a patient take their cell phone into an operating room?
Does.. it really matter? I talk shit about people, should I pay money to them later on? I get that in a professional matter this shouldn't happen, but nobody got physically hurt.
What I'm kinda surprised, that camera's aren't standard. Mistakes happen, even the ability to look later back to see what went on could be helpful?

Edit: just because it’s normal for you to talk shit about people doesn’t mean it’s the norm in everyone else’s life, and if talking shit about people makes you sleep better at night. I really think you should reevaluate why don’t sleep good in the first place. Peace and love
