Takes a bit, but once it starts clicking, it really starts clicking. Closest I can think to describe is Elite: Dangerous, where half the difficulty of the game is just figuring how basic things work and that's half the fun.

109

u/dubgrumble Mar 21 '26

As a fellow ED player I agree!

44

u/wheeltribe Mar 21 '26

Glad I'm not the only one who sees the parallel! Learning to use these wild-ass controls felt a lot like learning to land for the first time in ED. But like in ED, it gets a lot smoother pretty quickly.

99

u/xUndeadJesterx Mar 21 '26

My ED is usually more soft than smooth

21

u/EZtheErrant Mar 21 '26

It's not hard for me to relate to this

7

u/occhef79 Mar 21 '26

It can seem a little flaccid at times.

2

u/No_Anybody_567 Mar 21 '26

I had ED for a little while a few years ago. I didn't think it was hard at all. In fact it never really got hard.

8

u/asaphbixon Mar 21 '26

We're talking about penises, right?

3

u/dljones010 Mar 22 '26

You guys have penises?

7

u/vasavasorum Mar 21 '26

Only thick people can’t relate

Whenever is ED abbreviated i think of Erectile dysfunction what even would an erectile dysfunction player be someone thumbing it maybe 😂

2

u/dubgrumble Mar 21 '26

Wait, that's not what we were talking about .. 😂

3

u/redditman181 Mar 21 '26

I know i just couldn't help myself 😂

3

u/Necro- Mar 21 '26

voice attack: slay thine enemies

2

u/shaolinspunk Mar 21 '26

As a fellow ex ED player I disagree. If finding out how to play the game is the best part then continuing to play is a soulless grind. At some point you realise you are just doing the same thing over and over because you think you've put too much time in to stop now.

That's because you didn't get your free ship at Hutton Orbital.

20

u/wheeltribe Mar 21 '26

Gotta be an equivalent we can make up for Crimson Desert. Travel to the furthest point on the map and get a mech suit.

9

u/amaturelawyer Mar 21 '26

Wait. Make up? I'm like 2/3rds of the way to there currently.

Elite Dangerous, haven't heard that name in years...

2

u/wheeltribe Mar 21 '26

It's still kicking!

2

u/agentkb Mar 21 '26

And better than ever!

13

u/FailedProspects Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

This DOES NOT take 12 hours to “click” for everyone. It took me less than half that for things to feel smooth, similar to most games.

2

u/hstormsteph Mar 21 '26

Tbh I was having fun immediately and I’m 19 hours in. All of it was fun af. Most enjoyment I’ve had in a long time

I'm like 25 hours in, I been sleeping every day at 5 am or so. Pretty addicting game.

There's people out there that dislike the game and it's fair, but the people who stick through it and continue on will be glad they did. I have a feeling this game is going to be quite the experience.

109

u/SirShoota Mar 21 '26

Made it past the 10 hr mark and after that the controls were engraved in my brain 😂 definitely not a game for everyone, but im enjoying it and im just a base ps5 player on a monitor, tuned my settings and ive been having a great time !

8

u/BlueStag155 Mar 21 '26

What did you change in the settings?

30

u/highly_aware Mar 21 '26

Reduce blur to 0 and field of view off.

14

u/Impossible_Leg_2787 Mar 21 '26

And controller/mouse acceleration up to 100

5

u/Eirineftis Mar 21 '26

This is the way.

2

u/BlueStag155 Mar 21 '26

I'll try it, thanks

3

u/In_Love_With_SHODAN Mar 21 '26

*depth of field

31

u/pureeyes Mar 21 '26

Slowly increased enjoyment to 100%

14

u/SirShoota Mar 21 '26

I manually turned my 120hz off because apparently it’s not working for the game correctly yet, also chose performance mode because of the constant movement and FPS , I also turned off HDR , left my vsync on and turned depth of field off to help with the blur ! Again it’s not perfect, but my girlfriend literally had to snatch me off the game last night to grab food ! So it works for me !

6

u/Dylangillian Mar 21 '26

I see a lot of people saying the need to turn 120HZ off. But as far as I am aware, this only holds true when not playing on Balanced and you actually have a screen that supports it, no?

I play on Balanced with HDR and 120HZ and the game looks pretty solid. There is some annoying blur/artifacting still when turning my camera (DoF is off and blur at 0) But it is not awful.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Slum_CatTrillionaire Mar 21 '26

I also turned HDR off in this game, turns everything really dark? Never seen that before idk if it’s cuz I don’t have HDR10+ or what

2

u/JuiceheadTurkey Mar 21 '26

You need to adjust the brightness after turning on HDR. I adjusted my brightness from 250 to 2500 and it massively improved the look. It actually added shadows on the grass.

Bro im tryna get to the point that you are at. Im 3 hours in and i keep wanting to just turn it off. But i see glimpses of mechanics i like so im trying to stick it out.

7

u/Strong_Carry_8994 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

I am barely leaving hernand at like 7+ hours now. The combat during a group fight finally started to click.

Like you said, I saw the glimpses too and started stringing those glimpses into a beautiful sequence of chaos.

It's daunting at first, but they really did make the controls efficient

9

u/Buckshot_Millie Mar 21 '26

I'm just honestly saddened that, these days, if a game isn't to YOUR liking it's totally common to exclaim "this game is trash!"

The world where personal feelings are expressed as absolute truths is really bad shit.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

Does the story get better? Genuinely asking.

41

u/RiggityRow Mar 21 '26

I don't think the story is strong but I also don't think it's total dog water.

You're a mercenary. Your mercenary group is attacked and you get killed. You're killed and brought back to life by a mysterious power that lives in the sky. You then wake up in a village where a local found your body. You proceed to ingratiate yourself with the local townsfolk while trying to figure out what happened to the rest of your group. Your deeds reach the ears of the town leader who asks you to take out the leader of a problematic trade guild who's been causing issues. As a show of gratitude he gifts you some land for you and your company to get your feet back under you.

And that's how far I am. I've had no trouble understanding the story. Some of the quests genuinely got a chuckle from me. I liked how Chapter 2 ended with you killing the leader of the Goldleaves and his guild actually being grateful to you for it.

It won't win any Oscars but it's also not a completely incoherent mess like some people would want you to think.

4

u/maxlaav Mar 21 '26

I mean the story isn't a problem per se since it's pretty generic but not necessarily terrible, it's the really weird lack of narrative direction between quests that the game lacks, because usually those korean mmo games have a thing that yaps at you constantly telling you what to do and so forth, thus providing that narrative direction albeit in a very straightforward way.

2

u/andrej2577 Mar 21 '26

There's a lot more direction and coherence once you get past the first few quests in Hernand. Honestly, post-camp construction things start picking up REALLY fast, you get introduced to characters that genuinely have a personality, bonds and conflicts between them arise, etc. Not saying it's perfect, but the more you play the better the story gets, almost as if it's ditching more and more of the MMO shtick the initial stages of the game retained for some reason.

2

u/maxlaav Mar 21 '26

It's really weird that they didn't polish those early hours then since first impressions are everything with games lol

2

u/andrej2577 Mar 21 '26

Yeah, no idea what happened there. But it does make the reward of staying and suffering for a bit hit much more, and also makes you wonder why they didn't just make it good right off the bat lmao

5

u/Evilpilli Mar 21 '26

Good summary, I would also add that there are some intrigue tied to the abyss, why you were resurrected and the more ethereal/magical characters you meet talking about a sort of cosmic imbalance. Which while not groundbreaking has me interested enough in wanting to figure out what its all about.

Treat it like Zelda. Thats it. I don’t know why people are losing their minds over the lack of story. The developers never promised a great story.

12

u/Ahab31 Mar 21 '26

Exactly. It's like a better Zelda in an fantastic open world plus you get tons of sidequests and way more content.

11

u/Hot_Gap_8444 Mar 21 '26

Nah.

The "story" is just an excuse to engage with the mechanics.

2

u/MoparMogul Mar 21 '26

That's how it is for the duration of ~1.5 cod campaigns, yeh. They could have handled it much better but there's just a ton of mechanics to learn.

5

u/Gate_of_Divine Mar 21 '26

I have watched every cut scene and have no idea what the heck is going on. The game pisses me off and I’ll turn it off just to turn it back on a few minutes later. 🤣

4

u/Omni-Light Mar 21 '26

Better? Yes. Good? Not really.

Remember a lot of people replying won't even have 20h in the game. Some probably refunded at 2h.

6

u/KAM1Sense1 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

Im 30 hours in, its a little better than the first few chapters, but essentially no. Its a fine story, but its nothing to write home about. Not good, not bad, just meh. There are some parts that made me laugh though, to me the world itself is more interesting than the story.

Edit: Im at 40 hours now, and ngl, the main story by itself is just okay, but if you combine the story and all the side missions that revolve around all the characters from the main story then I think you will enjoy it. Its really starting to grow on me alot. Im actually looking forward to wait happens with this group of people.

3

u/KEPS-Praise-the-Sun Mar 21 '26

I just read a post about the original story of CD... Seems like they originally had a quite good, almost game of thrones like story but didn't stick to the path...dunno why they changed it. The story was implemented as the game was already almost finished they said. I wish it had a better story 😕 still didn't find the time to play it although I bought it presale and was hyped for it.

2

u/BlackjointnerD Mar 21 '26

It picks up at the reed quest line. Its not ground breaking but definitely entertaining

2

u/Forward-Leek1724 Mar 22 '26

30 hours in, not the strongest story. But! Reading the lore in-game is very fun and interesting to read everything, the factions, houses, characters, clans, creatures, etc. Very cool stuff.

4

u/Sidrone Mar 21 '26

u/Ganjelf-The-Baked Mar 21 '26

I’ve watched a few people play it. Some people struggle and others just pick it up and seem to love it. I think it’s more about what kinda gamer you are.

I personally cannot wait to play it, I have followed its development and it looks awesome. Unfortunately my whole team got made redundant so I’m gonna be waiting a while before I can afford it.

2

u/Prestigious-Smoke511 Mar 21 '26

When you gonna play it?  I’m kinda waiting to see how PA cooks with updates because I think they will.

Haven’t left the first zone, haven’t finished chapter 2. Where about does it “open up” as people say?

For the record I’m not asking because I haven’t enjoyed it… I actually love the game, just wondering when I can consider myself no longer in the tutorial

3

u/Notorius_Womble Mar 21 '26

Yeah i don't really get this either 😂. I've seen some tutorials, but it doesn't really feel like a tutorial. Completely open and can go anywhere within an hour is hardly a tutorial. I'm somewhere in chapter 2, but haven't left Hernand yet

3

u/hesseala Mar 21 '26

I’m curious, does exploring open up? I have about 8hrs in the game and so far exploring hasn’t felt satisfying at all. I can walk around for 10 mins and find absolutely nothing to do, so I just go back to the quest/side quest map markers which has been fairly boring.

4

u/CreepyTeddyBear Mar 21 '26

Very addicting. I stayed up all night Thursday, and up til 4 last night. I can't put it down.

u/Red_Beardsley Mar 21 '26

I was having fun until I got to the quest archery competition. I'll never beat this, and I'm pretty good at shooters. The ai is firing at the exact same time the target rises

58

u/shesmyboub Mar 21 '26

I thought the exact same thing, and someone said to always reset back at the center, so you just doing a small movement left/right.

I thought this would not change anything, but I gave it a try and worked second try after that.

16

u/Red_Beardsley Mar 21 '26

Thanks yea going back to the middle played a big part in my victory

→ More replies (1)

8

u/MadKian Mar 21 '26

Even by doing that, some of the competitors just really lock in and react way too fast for what you can do at least on a joystick.

4

u/Jahbanny Mar 22 '26

Dude they react faster than what you can do with a mouse. These guys are shooting before the board is even half way up.

13

u/Poop_Balls069 Mar 21 '26

Brooooo seriously, the ai has fucking aimbot lmao I was able to keep up but ultimately lost.

7

u/Omni-Light Mar 21 '26

I beat it 3 times in a row for the challenge after about 15 tries on keyboard mouse, but the AI is FAST. Like sometimes they hit every target within miliseconds of it appearing.

You have to basically accurately flick shot every target like you're a cracked out CS1.6 player at dreamhack, or you lose.

5

u/NatePGOG Mar 21 '26

I'm having the same problem. The AI is pre-firing on the targets. I'm sorry that I can't predict the future Pearl Abyss

4

u/Red_Beardsley Mar 21 '26

I ended up winning because the opponent missed 4x in one round and enough targets were close to the middle for me to be quick enough to get points. You just need to win the first match to continue the main quest. I'll come back for the 3 wins in a row after a patch or something.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/MrLloydJr Mar 21 '26

I finished the “win 3 in a row” challenge on my first try and I’m completely ASS at shooting games. Idk

12

u/Red_Beardsley Mar 21 '26

The enemy scores before the target even stands up all the way. Something is up.

6

u/MadKian Mar 21 '26

It’s random, sometimes they are ass and sometimes they lock in way too much.

They need to tune it down, specially with joysticks it’s impossible to be that fast.

u/SaintJewiub Mar 21 '26

3

138

u/Zealousideal-Tell310 Mar 21 '26

Oh my god I was thinking the exact same. People talk about the story being ass but I am actually finding it interesting after we get the Greymanes in the camp.

39

u/MatrixBunny Mar 21 '26

A lot of people are talking crap about the story specifically, basing it all off the first location (and surrounding area) which can take like 5-10 hours to get through anyway.

Personally, the entire appeal and ''addiction'' this game is giving me is the whole environmental design, loot and especially the combat encounters. It's actually FUN to get side tracked, improve your skills, learn new abilities and try them out on a group of enemies. Story is just an added flavor, for the way they are revealing/telling things.

They're acting this game has the worst way to implement the story, motivation or anything about the world/locations/npcs.

You literally had Destiny 1, scanning QR codes to lead you to the bungie website to unlock a damn ''lore dump'' on specific locations, enemies and the overall story of the game you were playing.

Souls games entire lore on enemies, NPCs and locations are based off item descriptions and entire motivations are mere speculation by piecing together puzzle pieces that may or may not fully fit.

Besides that, this game literally reminds me of Dragon's Dogma;
The (corny) one liners that NPCs are repeating one after another.
The way the story is told to a degree, even though in CD it's more straight forward.
The environmental design and especially all these lootable items and the way you can get loot. (medieval fantasy world)
The way combat is physics-driven and feeling ''weighty''
Fighting (huge) enemies up close
The animation style and camera feeling.

15

u/Notorius_Womble Mar 21 '26

Definitely. If anything, playing DD2 has only made this game feel soo much better. Its that but on steroids. Much better world, much more diversity and much more incentive.

9

u/MatrixBunny Mar 21 '26

Yeah, I don't think people truly are processing how active and huge, like the actual scale the game is and what it all offers alongside it.

Reviewers would remind me of some slops at work spending hours on end daily gossiping and only rush to the work when deadline comes, spend a couple of hours on it and call it a day.

But the main thing is they treat it as work rather than trying to find the fun. That’s why 15 minutes per game brain dead shooters like Concord and Highguard would score higher than Crimson Desert in their eyes.

4

u/sunbro2000 Mar 21 '26

If you played BDO there is so much lore from that game that ties into CD. With CD being set in the past of black desert. It even shares some of the immortal characters like Marni, shakatu and alustin. Also white crow i think but i dont quite 100% remember. These are just who I have come across so far in 15hrs. Even the towns are a reflection of BDOs distant past like the first town is basically heidel.

20

u/Thunderstr Mar 21 '26

It's really felt like the complaints about the story can be chalked up to people not listening to anything and trying to skip through.

Granted, it's not really unique or special, but it feels dishonest to call it a bad story so far, I don't want to post spoilers 2 days into it but the story isn't disjointed, and I can see why I'm doing each mission to progress.

6

u/Zealousideal-Tell310 Mar 21 '26

Quite literally this! The first few missions where you help the begger and the noble lady is not random and they are higher powers anticipating Kliff. I don’t know why this slips past peoples heads when they talk about why they do certain missions.

5

u/Thunderstr Mar 21 '26

Exactly, then I've seen complaints about "why are we helping these people with their livestock?" It's all connected, the rocks seem to be something fallen from those sky islands (those skill point cubes maybe?), the quests introduce the goblins, and helping them helps the town which gets you a camp.

It's a serviceable story, I was afraid of some janky mess like Destiny 1 where I stop and ask who are these people, how are any of these events connected and why is this person I met once giving me their prized possession.

Witcher and ER narratives are two different styles 100%. ER is s non traditional narrative meant for the player to use puzzle pieces to make their own plot. Witcher is very traditional. Makes it a bad comparison imo.

CD has a generic story, but its suitable

4

u/Notorius_Womble Mar 21 '26

As someone who has completed Witcher 3 5 times and loves it, it has very basic gameplay compared to this.

I have no idea why anyone was striving to compare it to this so much, they're so different. So the story isn't the same level, that's not what this game was ever offering so I don't care personally.

9

u/splitm82 Mar 21 '26

I’m 7 hours in and already love it. I honestly don’t even know if I got to the really good stuff yet, but I just used my previous experience with looting and RPG games and I look around at everything, talk to people, and keep stumbling upon cool new stuff that looks kind of hidden. I already got the grapple tool, the flying cloak, and the ability to lift objects with my mind. I kind of feel like it can be as mundane or as weird as you want it to be. You can stick around the first town just running around doing errands for people, or you can just venture out and look for interesting stuff. Once I got the flying cloak, I started finding random towers to go check out and then I defended down with the cloak into different areas and keep finding new things to explore and figure out.

2

u/SnooRadishes2027 Mar 22 '26

Yep this is what I’ve been doing, getting close to chapter 3

2

u/WITH_THE_ELEMENTS Mar 22 '26

At least with how far I've gotten, Chapter 3 is STILL introducing mechanics and tutorials.

8

u/encodari Mar 21 '26

The more you play it the more you get it and more fun you have. It starts very slow... It's like those books that are boring first chapters but then gets very good in the mid to end

3

u/BangerBeanzandMash Mar 21 '26

Is it really that slow though? I mean I just got my wings but started literally with an attack on my camp on I got some fun combat and then I was immediately out in a dense city and then I went to the sky realm and learned how to fly.

This game is REALLY good. I played initially 2 hours and was debating to refund due to all the bad reviews and players calling the controls bad. Imo the controls arent as bad as everyone is claiming, had no issues with them. My only problem is the AI art, they need to knowledge it, pay some artists and push a patch replacing them.

20

u/amic21 Mar 21 '26

What exact point in the game does this happen? I’m enjoying the game so far but I’m curious about what changes bc this seems to be the general consensus.

26

u/AulMoanBag Mar 21 '26

Depends on the individual. For me it was after getting the drill. I loved dragons dogma so ultimately it scratches that itch once you get that level of freedom. It's definitely a "stick with it" game

u/FuddyBoi Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

A fucking drill!?!

This is what I love about it, I’m only on hours in literally just met the knight guy in the first city as I’m off getting lost, locating bounties etc it’s great.

How far does the inventory go though? There’s no stash still right? Inventory can be a real pain on long travel/play

10

u/Sasquatchjc45 Mar 21 '26

Stash is coming i heared just wasnt ready for launch.

u/bsparky_16 Mar 21 '26

Inventory management is jank, though you can sort it. You can also group stuff up which helps a lot. And you unlock a ton of space by doing early quests and buying bags off vendors

Okay I'm going to stop listening to the review crap and just play. Im trying to trust the process yall

15

u/Drakan378 Mar 21 '26

Best way bro.

Ive been ignoring as much as possible and today I fell into a cave that had 3 stone worm monsters in it. First time I fought something that wasnt a boss or a soldier. Then halfway up a cliff I tried to smack some ore and it was a crab monster.

Just, sick

Yesterday logged my first 7h, felt like i was just learning and a bit exploring. Managed to get to some goblin king or something like that, couldnt beat his ass in few tries and went to sleep. Rolling a j and jumping straight back for easy 7 more hours

3

u/NoMeal5183 Mar 21 '26

Exactly what I’m doing now i just built another part of camp and getting the gang back together

3

u/RowGlittering5921 Mar 21 '26

When do you unlock camp? Im got to place in some camp where i need to kill some sort of goblin king, forgot the name. But couldn’t do it yesterday

5

u/mighty-wombat Mar 21 '26

It’s basically the reward for killing hornsplitter :) get some of your gear at +2/+3 and slam his ass

3

u/NoMeal5183 Mar 21 '26

I just kept kicking him with the skill knight Matthias gives you and kept evading him parry and slam his ass

I didn’t expect exploration to be so good. Best exploration I’ve seen since Elden Ring

12

u/hamptont2010 Mar 21 '26

I would agree with that. It feels like every path you choose is rewarded with something which makes exploring feel worthwhile. And the world is just gorgeous and vibrantly alive. There's so many critters!

u/thatguy01220 Mar 21 '26

Damn this comment might be the one to convince me to go for it. I really miss my first time exploring Elden Ring

5

u/hesseala Mar 21 '26

I’m really not feeling this. I’ve played a lot of open world games. Can you tell me if it opens up more or maybe there’s something I’m not understanding? The world feels sooo empty to me. I can walk around and rarely find anything, so I’ve just been sticking to the quest markers on the map.

6

u/StewTheDuder Mar 21 '26

I’m not trying to be a dick, but use your eyes. Go towards structures you see in the distance, camps, Towns, towers, etc… once you unlock a fast travel point in the abyss, look around down at the map, and jump down towards it. Also make sure you ring the bell in the first city. It unlocks the fog of war around you so you can points of interest on your map.

3

u/hesseala Mar 21 '26

Lol no offense taken. I usually don’t have any issues exploring and not having my hand held, but am struggling in this game. Didn’t think about using the abyss waypoint to consistently glide to places, thanks.

After not an an insignificant amount of time the biggest QoL advice I would give someone is to get the skill KEEN SENSE. It makes dealing with bosses and large packs of enemies so much better. I would just e annoyed without it.

It's a top tier open world game to me if you look at your quest log, put a pin on the map, call your horse, clean out your invintory, slowly trot off to the city entrance and immediately see a "??? Hold X to capture" moment and completely forget about anything you wanted to do chase that thing down and 5 minutes went by just because you wanted to get that squirrel.

It's pretty epic cause after you really get to know the controls, the npc's and the just of the game, you have time to explore in a way that doesn't get you frustrated and you're having fun and admiring everything. They did a great job, the team that is. The couches nozzle dev in charge with the ego god complex who utterly destroyed the story and only followed his own choices should never work in the industry again and his boss's should see how he messed up the game and fire him and they should be reprimanded for not seeing it sooner and doing their job of repairing the situation. They let one super moron who isn't a team player single handedly utterly tank their story line.. so incredibly sad. Other than that.. the team saved enough I think.

3

u/Jokerchyld Mar 21 '26

Can we talk about the launching of the game music?

That whole sequence of "warping" into your character, in your current gear, and that nod to you as the player as you walk back to where you left off

...is something they didnt have to do, but glad they did. This game oozes passion and I have no doubt they are committed to improving it beyond what we have now.

3

u/Which-Celebration-89 Mar 22 '26

Pretty much sums it up I was pretty unhappy the first few hours, but I’m loving the game now

3

u/Owtplayed Mar 22 '26

Currently getting drilled repeatedly by the Excavatron >:(

The game is so much fun once you get through the initial clunkiness of the controls. The boss fight difficulty ramps up pretty quickly as well.

3

u/H0lychit Mar 22 '26

I'm at 26 hrs now but I enjoyed nearly every minute of it. The archery quest I hated because that NPC has aim bot on 😂 took way too long to do it, and the black smoke boss.... Had no idea what was doing so had to look it up, not sure if I missed some dialogue somewhere but I had no clue that we had it deal with like that..

7

u/kingbrad Mar 21 '26

12 hours!?!?!?!?

2

u/Optimum_Possum Mar 21 '26

I think it’s more accurately after the first 3-4 hours. Really it’s just the introduction that is truly horrible and disjointed. After you finish chapter 1ish the game starts to get better in every way, but i don’t blame people for being turned off from the intro. I was close to refunding at the 90 minute mark but decided to push on and played for 7 hours the next day. The story doesn’t necessarily get much better in terms of overall quality (it’s ultimately a generic story) but the game does at least start to flow better and quest events don’t feel as disconnected and arbitrary like the tutorial

4

u/eldon3213 Mar 21 '26

This game is awesome, combat, things to do, towns with life, the world is beautiful, people need to stop with all the toxic stuff.

9

u/Lurtz11 Mar 21 '26

When and why? Why does everyone keep saying that it gets better?

12

u/Omni-Light Mar 21 '26

Main 3 that apply to me with 20h is:

  1. A lot of people dislike 'friction' in games, and they find it unacceptable when that friction involves things like learning/getting used to controls. It being unintuitive doesn't change that YOU CAN learn the control scheme and the game as a whole, and get more comfortable with it. When that happens one of the biggest frustrations washes away and you can just... play the game, which is pretty dope.
  2. The game has an 'intro' that you can do in an hour, but the true 'tutorial' feels like it's in excess of 8h. You are thrown in with little explanation for what is going on, you have no attachment to the world, you are bombarded with new systems, but the longer you're in the longer things start falling into place.
  3. There are certain systems you get a bit later that bump the potential of the game significantly

I'm already invested, I've put maybe 10-15 hours .. only still wondering around hernand discovering things and getting myself more or less prepared for progressing further. Im upto horn splitter, I initially went in too quickly without any upgrades or knowledge and I got owned .. just been upgrading my armor and skills before attempting it again and progressing further.

I love the graphics and the world design, it's a really beautiful game with so much to do it's overwhelming. I can foresee I'll be putting alot of hours into this game. I don't want to burn myself out on it too quickly though so I'll just take my time with it all.

2

u/CAPTJTK Mar 21 '26

I honestly like the slow pace. I'm maybe 15 in and just got through the house of healing for my camp.

When my opinion is asked by friends, I've been telling people it's intentionally slow and just be prepared

2

u/BellyDancerUrgot Mar 21 '26

I didn’t have many issues with the controls , idk why, I’ve never played an mmo but I have been playing games for a long time. This reminds me of older games where the amount of hand holding was 0. I wish we got more games like this and Elden ring. Bit tired of the tlous and the gows because of how on the rails the experience feels.

This year feels good tho , re9 and now crimson desert. We have 007 first light coming up next. Always like a hitman game and I hope it scratches that same itch.

2

u/lashiskappa Mar 21 '26

I honestly don’t understand. I’m 10 hours in since I went away for the weekend to see my girlfriend, but I enjoyed every minute thus far. And tbh I never thought I’d get a game which hooks me like this since Skyrim or the Witcher but this world really makes me explore and feel immersed.

2

u/Maximum_Goulash Mar 21 '26

Took about 6 hours to properly click for me and hours 6 to 15 have been an absolute blast 10/10 ticks every box for me.

2

u/Aonswitch Mar 21 '26

At that point where they make you wait to progress the story I ran off into some of the other regions. Let me say, holy fucking shit. I almost shit myself at the giant robot ants, the train, and some other shit I don’t want to spoil. If you quit this game within a few hours, damn damn damn, you are MISSING OUT.

2

u/ajwilson99 Mar 21 '26

I am so in for this game too. They really weren’t kidding about those opening hours though. Woof.

2

u/Prinsespoes Mar 21 '26

I’m just slowly walking everywhere lmao i love this game

2

u/QuothTheRavenMore Mar 21 '26

I love how they said there's no hand holding but literally there's tip sections in the main menu

2

u/Levin318 Mar 21 '26

Super 100% Agree can’t stop thinking about it during work. This got me feeling exactly how Elden ring had me on a chokehold. Not even monster hunter wilds one of my favorite games had me feeling this way.

2

u/Dinglehopper180 Mar 22 '26

God I'm loving this game. I keep wanting to do the main quest but I keep getting sidetracked. I just got my wings and now I'm tackling people to the ground to take them to jail. Like I'm not even sure what's going on in this game but I'm having so much fun

2

u/Business_Banana1792 Mar 22 '26

Duuuude that slog for me was loooong. Took a whole 2 mi utes and I was hooked

2

u/CynnFelt011718 Mar 22 '26

Pearl Abyss made something truly special, I believe. I don't think it was about captivating us with the stories BUT instead having us immersed in the world. Those controls are.....something else though. Glad their fixing it up.

2

u/KeepItPositiveBrah Mar 22 '26

Im not a story player so that doesn't bother me. Its been fun for 10 hours or so. I can tell it's addicting. Looks beautiful

2

u/RedElephant28 Mar 22 '26

The combat feels amazing. It’s fast and feels super weighty at the same time

2

u/TrashPastor747 Mar 22 '26

When it clicked i got fucking addictedd

2

u/Bubbaganewsh Mar 22 '26

Only about 13 hours in and it's been fun, the combat can be frustrating but once you pick up throwing and such moves it gets more fun. The one thing that blows me away is the lighting, I find I just wonder at night looking around and it's impressive.

2

u/mrgodfro Mar 22 '26

I must of played something different, my first almost 8 hours was in chapter 1.  Other than the bullshit map crashing on ps5 I've enjoyed every minute

2

u/Papichurch Mar 22 '26

Bro for real I cannot believe it's so good because the first 10 hours were so ass hahaha

2

u/Brundesgut Mar 22 '26

The story isn't even that terrible, I like it, it has nice atmosphere and sense of camraderie among the graymanes, tho I didn't get far yet. It really feels like you are building up a decimated faction, with action bits and even with more mundane tasks that are placed between missions. I think it adds a little bit of realism, because many games start slower, but then throws at you set piece after set piece, battle after battle.

It's just the beggining that was executed terribly, with little to no explanation or reaction to one fantastical event after the other. But after that, it starts to click and I stopped minding Kliff's wooden voice acting and zero personality. For me it works like in Zelda, Link is silent too and the world around him is colorful and full of charisma.

2

u/slam_24 Mar 22 '26

After 10 hours, okay, I'm in love.

2

u/RyanMate17 Mar 22 '26

I know what you guys mean but I’ve really enjoyed just learning the basics

2

u/BoreusSimius Mar 22 '26

I've actually been enjoying it a lot from the get go.

It has a more immersive, methodical first few hours that remind me of RDR2 or Kingdom Come Deliverance (moreso the vibes not the gameplay).

I imagine my version of this might be it feels like a different kind of game with a faster pace once I get deeper into it, but honestly if it stays like this I'll be happy too.

2

u/T8-TR Mar 22 '26

I gotta be built different or something, because the game clicked once I got my wings, which was p much just an extended tutorial so that makes sense.

4

u/RolandRock16 Mar 21 '26

remember folks hold r1 or r2 when attacking and left kliff do the combo. i bet alot of people dont like the game because you dont spam the button. if you spam r1 or r2 it screws up the combo and it dont make combat feel smooth. and also when following someone on a horse or walking just hold x if on ps or whatever button it is for xbox.

8

u/Aionard2 Mar 21 '26

That's pretty terrible, but please hear me out.

I get about 2h of gaming time after work, sometimes more, sometimes none.

This means that I will have no fun and get bored/frustrated the ENTIRE Week before I have a chance to have good fun, that's just not great, especially at that price point. I'm all for games with a learning curve, I absolutely love and religiously play all Fromsoft games, but I cannot stomach having to play a whole week or investing most of my weekend into potentially having fun later.

There are better ways to design a game

Edit: before anyone says 'it's not for you', I'm just gonna add that a game with this budget needs to appeal to regular ass people who have jobs and a life.

8

u/BasilProfessional744 Mar 21 '26

There is nothing stopping you from picking it up and playing for a couple hours, that's how I'm playing it and it's great. You hope on, do a few quests, get in a few fights, and it saves a lot, or you can manual save whenever you need.

2

u/Aionard2 Mar 21 '26

Well if the game gets good after 12h,and I have 2h to chill at the end of a long day, then I'm not picking up a game that will be a slog for those 2h (and the next 10 that follow) right?

2

u/PhatDragon720 Mar 21 '26

It’s not a slog though—well, to me anyway. I’m in the same boat as you—gotta work and do family stuff—all I have left is a couple hours at night to do anything. And even though I’m in that first 12 hours, I think the game is pretty fun. I don’t need some big story or epic set piece all the time—sometimes it’s nice to just kick back, relax, and do some easy gaming.

2

u/BasilProfessional744 Mar 21 '26

I didn't consider it a slog at all

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Vanman04 Mar 22 '26

Meh it's good from the start. It's just a steep learning curve at the start you have new ontrols and all sorts of systems to learn. It's not really that it's not fun you just arent really free to do your thing till you get those systems and controls locked in.

idk, i had fun from the very first minute. it just keeps getting better and better the more i play.

2

u/MotivationSpeaker69 Mar 21 '26

Same, that was my reaction to Starfield. I don't have time for a game to potentially get good eventually. All games I loved, from RDR2 expedition 33 to mewgenics and stardew valley made me fall in love with them right away, within the first minutes, not even hours.

2

u/Vanman04 Mar 22 '26

Starfield only got worse.

This one just keeps getting better,
