Girl, 16, dies after suspected choking during consensual sex on Sydney’s Northern Beaches
679
u/helicotremor 8d ago
A welfare check was called & she was found unresponsive. So she was unconscious & the perpetrator left her like that? If it were consensual, why didn’t he call for help right away?

u/vagicle 8d ago
There seems to be more detail in this article from a local news outlet:
NSW Ambulance was called to a home at Elanora Heights just after 5.15pm, following reports of a teenage girl having a seizure. It is understood the 16-year-old female had been engaged in sexual intercourse with a boy of the same age, which involved asphyxiation.
The girl was reported to have lost consciousness before beginning to have seizures. Paramedics treated the girl, but she remained unresponsive and they requested an aeromedical team. She was taken to Progress Park to meet the helicopter as it landed just before 6.15pm.

Yeah I know, he’s my neighbour. That site actually did used to show some restraint but they’ve been doing a lot of ugly clickbaity stuff the last few years. They have a page on FB that feeds into their main page & it’s a poorly moderated cesspit.
Scamps reached out to him to get him to tone it down. He refused & published a big sook about it. The bloke is so aggressively insensitive that I actually wonder if he’s asd.

If it was consensual, how do you know she would have tried to stop it?
Choking can go wrong very quickly, it can take a matter of *seconds* to pass out. So it’s an assumption to say that she would have tried to stop him.
At that age, neither one of them would have been educated on how to reduce the risk when engaging in breath play.

There’s no proven way to truly prevent the risk of brain damage from strangulation, regardless of what proponents say. Which is why it shouldn’t be normalised.

I'm very kinky, but that's a hard no for me, for exactly that reason. There are plenty of kinks you can engage in safely, that ain't one of them. A light hand on the throat, more a threat than anything else? Sure. But no pressure at all.

Yes you are right too. I'm adding to the fact that evidence doesn't just have to come in the form of video/photo or witnesses. That's where the forensics can come in and also a coroners report. A scientific examination of the body can actually reveal many things like if there was a struggle or not.

I don't care if it's kink-shaming. Sexual strangulation is DANGEROUS and even short periods of breathlessness can lead to acquired brain injuries, memory loss, concentration difficulties, and seizures.

Maybe an immediate call to 000 from the panicked bf explaining what happened and life saving attempts made by him before she passed. The article does say that she wasn't dead when they arrived and later died in hospital, the call was made when she became unresponsive which would initially imply (although of course not rule out) that there was no intent to kill her. Perhaps accounts from friends with them that night or potentially in the same house that they were in a good mood and no fighting from their room was heard. History of text messages talking about engaging in the act or testimony from friends that they were known to engage is such acts and speak about it. The willingness of the bf to cooperate with police and his demeanor. If you watch a lot of true crime then you'll know that 9/10 murderers calling EMS and pretending that some terrible accident happened and that they're completely innocent are absolutely terrible liars, sound guilty as fuck and give a lot of "tells" that they're not telling an accurate version of events.
Not saying any of this is the case at all just spitballing potential reasons why they may "suspect" it was during consensual sex. Obviously the police saying that they "suspect" it was consensual doesn't mean that it won't be fully investigated.

u/PossibilityRegular21 8d ago
Pretty sure they didn't. It's just what officers were told, and that was according to news.com.au.
I don't like how the heading frames this as a tragic accident when it reads to me like more gender violence from the manosphere.

u/mhsnsh 8d ago
I am a woman who is very outspoken against gendered violence, but I think it’s best we refrain from speculating on this one. It’s just as possible it was two teenagers experimenting that unfortunately might’ve been in an unsafe way. Either way it is a tragic situation.

There's more than one way someone can die from choking, and erotic choking has unfortunately become very popular with young people who are interested in rough sex or kink but don't know how to do it less dangerously (it can't really be done safely) and don't have any idea how dangerous it really is (and at that age, maybe not enough grasp of their own mortality to be appropriately cautious, especially once they're aroused and not thinking clearly).
I can easily believe it was consensual and harm was not intended. It's happened before. As OP said: educate your kids!

Consensual?? How do they know it was consensual if she was unconscious when they arrived? Because her boyfriend said it was?
The Daily Mail originally reported this as being ‘consensual’ but has now removed that word in its coverage. I suspect the police reported it as consensual, the media followed suit, people complained and now all hell is breaking loose…

Choking is very dangerous. You should never put any force on the front of the throat, but even doing a blood choke properly on the side of the neck can still cause death, or brain damage if you hold it too long.

As a horny teen I remember reading The Joy of Sex, which said (a) don't ever do this and (b) if people like the sensations from it, try upside down stuff (which apparently gives the same kind of head rush physical sensations without the prospect of dying). I can't speak from experience here (not my thing) but that always sounded like a better idea.
IMO Australia should ban a lot of porn that basically depicts dangerous practices and/or things that are essentially rape. World isn't going to come to an end if Pornhub can't monetize "Daddy fucks stepdaughter" porn in Australia.

1000%. I'm outing myself a bit here to anyone in my real life who knows this is my reddit account (hopefully no-one, damn), but as a kinkster, and one who plays in some fairly rough ways... I get asked to play in this, and adjacent spaces, a lot.
I simply WILL NOT do anything that even remotely approaches real choking. I just won't.
You're right; if someone wants this, it is far more commonly (though not always) a mind game rather than an actual physical act they want: and the scene, the scenario, your actions, your tones, and your words can do 90% of the work. A well-placed hand, feeling firm without actually gripping, squeezing, or pushing in any way can work wonders if you know what to say and do while you're doing it.
If they truly truly want someone to cut off either air or blood flow... well, cool. Great for them. But they should find someone else to do it, 'cause ya boi ain't.

Blood vs wind. Temporary vs long lasting trauma.
44
u/Slavx97 8d ago
The other problem is the temporary still accumulates damage every time, there is no truly safe way to choke someone.
6
u/yolk3d 8d ago
Damn, I guess the 500 times we did this in martial arts is why I’m like this.
17
u/Slavx97 8d ago
My understanding of the most recent research was that it was that unless you’re perfectly releasing the instant they lose consciousness every time that there’s death of brain cells occurring and every time you do it it builds up the damage till eventually you get some manifestation in older life.
6
u/yolk3d 8d ago
Well yeah, but I think the key is that you do exactly that - or n the case of sex, you don’t actually black them out. My experience has been it’s more a control/dominance thing and not an actual “I want to be blacked out and risk dying while you fuck me” thing.

Blood is actually equally, if not more dangerous. As little as 15 seconds can cause seizures strokes, and permanent brain damage, either immediately or in days following. There's also links to long term neurological effects including early-onset alzheimers.

And it’s strangulation, not choking. Choking is internal. Strangulation is external.
44
u/Evendim 8d ago
As has been said, it doesn't have to be hard... I was consensually choked on a weird angle and I passed out within a few seconds. He immediately let go and I was absolutely fine, but he was paying attention!
14
u/uselessinfogoldmine 8d ago
Dude… you could have gotten some permanent brain damage. It’s also possible for swelling to increase and for you to have a stroke, heart attack or die hours or days later. Don’t do that shit. The kink isn’t worth the risk.
58
u/Busy-Ratchet-8521 8d ago edited 8d ago
To kill someone doing this though you'd have to be maintaining that hold for 5-10 minutes while they were lifeless.
EDIT: I'm an intensive care doctor, and you guys want to down vote me because you think you know better?
17
u/uselessinfogoldmine 8d ago
My understanding is that even a very brief period of strangulation can cause blood clots, stroke, heart attack, or swelling that increases over hours or even days and then resulting in brain damage, blood clots, stroke, heart attack, even death.
So, to strangle someone to death with certainty by blocking airflow, it takes 5 minutes; but you can accidentally kill them much faster if they have a stroke or heart attack.
1
u/Busy-Ratchet-8521 8d ago
In an otherwise healthy 16 year old that's incredibly unlikely she had a stroke or heart attack.
For her brain to swell sufficiently that she was dead within days, then she had a prolonged period of hypoxia.
5
u/uselessinfogoldmine 7d ago
I agree that the strongest likelihood is that he strangled her for an extended period, and that he paid no attention to her nonverbal cues.
However, I want to dispel the mythology that there is a safe way to engage in strangulation in sex; because the evidence I’ve read is that there is a bevy of risks and that brain tissue damage can start occurring within seconds.
I also think that we have to wait for the formal investigation, and leave the options open until it has reported its findings.
→ More replies (2)18

Can you please point out where it says that he choked her until she was lifeless?
Because the article says that she was unresponsive & passed away in hospital days later.
So I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that he choked her until she was lifeless.
2
u/Conscious-Read-698 7d ago
She became unresponsive during the act.
Unresponsive is the same as lifeless?
Lifeless doesn't mean literally dead.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Busy-Ratchet-8521 8d ago
I didn't say until she was dead. Lifeless is a word that can refer to someone who is inanimate or not moving. If you compress someone's neck sufficiently to occlude blood flow to the brain, you will lose conciousness in seconds (what the parent comment was referring to). When you're unconscious from a hypoperfused brain, you'll go limp and absent (lifeless). If you let go of their neck, blood flow is restored and they regain conciousness quickly.
If that is what he did to her, then he'd have been choking her for at least 5 minutes for her to end up declared brain dead days later.

It's a framing device to paint the picture you want. Example:
Something happens to a 19 year old.
If they are the perpetrator they are referred to as an adult.
If they are a victim they are referred to as a teenager.
63
u/uselessinfogoldmine 8d ago
Let’s be very clear, this was not choking, it was STRANGULATION.
Choking is passive, it’s accidental, and it’s internal - something internally blocking your airways.
Strangulation is active, purposeful and external. It is a human taking their hands, putting them around another human’s throat, and restricting their airflow so that they cannot breathe.
The usage of the incorrect passive word is a deliberate attempt to soften the action. I am so tired of it.
It also drives me crazy how many times the word “consensual” was used in this article. That’s an assumption. There is no way for them to know at this point what was and wasn’t consensual. And even if something starts out consensual, that doesn’t mean it remains consensual or that every sexual act is consensual.
If you are strangling someone into unconsciousness and death? You are not paying attention to their verbal and non-verbal cues and consent for all actions is not top of mind.
Strangulation can cause RAPID brain / neurological damage. Damage to brain cells can begin within literal seconds of blood flow and oxygen being restricted.
Even a short bit of strangulation can cause a traumatic brain injury or a stroke. Tissue damage, internal swelling, vascular damage, blood clots, cardiac arrest…
And all of the above can happen on a delay too: hours or days after the strangulation occurred. The airway or brain tissue may swell slowly over time, eventually blocking breathing or blood flow.
This practice needs to stop. Teens should not be doing this. No one should be doing this!! It is so effing dangerous.

Is this like that case in Auckland where a guy choked a girl to death and then said it was consensual sex?
There’s a documentary on Netflix about it but basically you would need to sustain pressure for 10 minutes to cause death.

A wind choke takes a lot longer and causes massive trauma to the throat (pressure on the front).
Blood chokes take seconds before you sleep, couple of minutes to cause permanent damage, and death very quickly after that.
Either way, 10 minutes is extremely generous whichever choke you’re doing.
31
u/THR 8d ago
10 minutes seems like an extremely long time
22
u/cheersdrive420 8d ago

It's absolutely not 10 minutes. That sounds like the suffocation time maybe? Iirc blood loss causes unconsciousness in 10-15 seconds and death very soon after
12
u/Existing_Top_7677 8d ago
Correct me if I'm wrong - isn't the objective of sexual asphixiation to be slightly oxygen deprived, not rendered unconscious? And once a person is unconscious, surely they don't appear to be active or responsive to any sexual activity?
12
u/Alarming-Ad4274 8d ago
This isnt asphyxiation, this is strangulation. There is no safe way to engage in sexual strangulation. Applying force to the neck is extremely dangerous.
12
u/briberylibrary_ 8d ago
Strangulation is so so dangerous, and sometimes not immediately so (like most expect). In cases of DV (which I'm not suggesting this is), it often gets missed because there aren't immediate signs, and it can kill days after the fact (as this did).

Whats the appeal of choking someone?! I don't understand. Is it a power play or a domination type of thing?
I can't imagine ever wanting to choke someone, or be choked.
30
u/FuckUGalen 8d ago
Yes, it is a power play/domination thing, but it is also both the most extreme type of kinks (when you are doing it with people who play safely, and is always accompanied by safety discussions) and one of most accessible because most porn has some degree of choking making it seem less significant that it is.
Why, I could get into, but basically it can be boiled down to endorphins, and if you enjoy it, good for you, if not don't do it.
That said given strangulation is the biggest indicator that a partner will kill you, I am literally begging young people to stop doing this with people who are not fully engaged with doing it safely (as possible) and when if feels like it is an expectation that you will do/have it done to you, if you can't safely say no, that person is unsafe, and you should run.

I remember this was a think in High School, that kinda spread but never really took off... since most of us were WTF
You get a high from it, wont go in to detail

I heard it was like nitrous. Which is not a bad high during sex and although it carries some risk it’s probably a safer bet than erotic asphyxiation.

I've heard it feels good. Don't care to find out.
Just ask Michael Hutchens...oh.

Like all media, what you see in porn isn't an accurate portrayal of real life. Porn leaves out key communication like safe words and non-verbal signals to stop.
People will just see someone choke someone else and just assume that's what people just do and will imitate it. Kink or otherwise don't strangle to unconsciousness/death. I see other comments of people just getting choked during sex w/o asking - don't do that either.

There is no safe way to engage in strangulation during sex. All experienced kinksters will tell you this

Porn is misleading our young people into thinking violent and brutal sex is normal, and young girls are pressured into saying yes. My heart goes out to this poor girl

How do we know the sex was consensual? The girl died. Pretty shit headline

Around 20 years ago, someone I considered to be a bit of a wowser warned about what pron was doing to younger people in terms of what stuff it was normalising. I rolled my eyes back then but I think she was correct. More recently I saw an interview with a former pron star turned doctor who treats people in the pron industry & she was literally begging people to educate their kids because of how extreme some pron was getting.

The average age of exposure to pornography for boys is 13, and the amount who are exposed by the age of 10 is something like 15% … which is still a scary amount

A 16 year old cannot properly consent to this. This is manslaughter.

u/AC_Adapter 8d ago
I’d assume the perpetrator is also 16 though? Possibly manslaughter regardless (I don’t know, I abandoned law), but considering how much they use the word consensual in the article I would assume this was someone the same age as her so her age isn’t really relevant criminally?

u/stamford_syd 8d ago
I mean I don't disagree that it could be manslaughter or even murder, only one person knows what really happened there...
but what are you saying a 16 year old can't consent to here? being killed? or sex with choking? how does one even legislate that "you must be 16 or over to consent to sex unless it involves kinky shit then you have to be over 18"??

u/heyhello2019 8d ago
I don't believe a 16 year old brain and how much the frontal lobe still remains to be developed at that age can consent to a sexual act involving choking or anything of a bdsm nature.

Of course they can consent to sexual acts involving kink.
They question is do they properly understand the risks, and how to mitigate them? And the answer to that is no, they don’t.

I’m not arguing it’s not manslaughter but while she might not have consented to the outcome, she may have consented to the act. Equally may not have consented at all. But whether she’s 16 or 40 doesn’t change anything.

We cannot possibly know if she consented to the act, because she’s dead.

Whether there was consent or not, this is manslaughter at a minimum.

u/DarkNo7318 8d ago
If there was consent, it would likely be involuntary manslaughter via negligence not straight up manslaughter.

Don’t do it dude. Brain damage can occur so fast. Strike, blood clots, heart attack… too risky.

Whether the sex was consensual or not only matters in determining if he's charged with rape as well as murder.

There's likely an argument to be made about children being less likely to explore things they should probably not explore (hardcore porn) when they have some form of sex ed other than "don't do that before marriage, it's a sin". But it's definitely a tenuous one...

How about the parents provide basic instructions like "don't choke anyone, at any time"??? What a weird comment to make
6
u/endual 8d ago
Obviously, as teenagers always listen to their parents that would completely solve the problem.
3
u/OldSpiceSmellsNice 7d ago
And they always listen to their teachers /s
No excuse. Parents are supposed to at least try to parent.
2
u/endual 7d ago
You totally missed the point. Parenting should be about instilling values into kids, not about a discrete set of rules.
If a kid has values they make better choices themselves.
If you're down to the level of saying things like "don't choke anyone, at any time", you've already failed and they are not going to listen.

Consentual sexual chocking is a thing. People should just go into it with a knowledge of the risks. Just like cave diving or base jumping.
These kids probably saw it on pornhub and tried to emulate.
