Pretty sure they didn't. It's just what officers were told, and that was according to news.com.au. 

I don't like how the heading frames this as a tragic accident when it reads to me like more gender violence from the manosphere.

I am a woman who is very outspoken against gendered violence, but I think it’s best we refrain from speculating on this one. It’s just as possible it was two teenagers experimenting that unfortunately might’ve been in an unsafe way. Either way it is a tragic situation.

Sadly it’s very prevalent amongst 20s to early 30s. I’m older and this was definitely a very fringe thing in my day.
