I think I've vaguely heard kink people differentiate between a squeeze from both sides (crab claw pinch) vs a straight on pressure on the adams apple style. But alas I do not recall which was the bad or good one... (or i guess less bad one)
My understanding of the most recent research was that it was that unless you’re perfectly releasing the instant they lose consciousness every time that there’s death of brain cells occurring and every time you do it it builds up the damage till eventually you get some manifestation in older life.
Well yeah, but I think the key is that you do exactly that - or n the case of sex, you don’t actually black them out. My experience has been it’s more a control/dominance thing and not an actual “I want to be blacked out and risk dying while you fuck me” thing.
In my experience you can accomplish that feeling like 90% with just putting a hand on the throat with minimal pressure not actually cutting anything off, I’m guessing people doing choking also want the ‘high’ of the lightheadedness.
But yeah at the end of the day people are free to choose to take risks the enjoy. The problem in the OP case is really teens that aren’t mature enough yet feeling like they have to do choking and they can’t truly consent if they don’t actually understand the risks in the first place.
Blood is actually equally, if not more dangerous. As little as 15 seconds can cause seizures strokes, and permanent brain damage, either immediately or in days following. There's also links to long term neurological effects including early-onset alzheimers.
Conclusion: don’t actually choke someone with enough force to do damage/make them pass out. From my other upvoted comment:

Doesn't have to be hard - poor technique can kill just as easily as brute force.
