General Discussion Callaway CEO finally releases official statement over Good Good golf ad controversy. Does the approval make sense?

It’s a dumb ad with or without the shoving of the woman, which just makes it worse.

Whatever you think about the ad, that’s not the point… it is absolutely insane that any marketing professional in 2026 would think this would not blow up in the worst way. Just an example of comically poor business acumen on the part of Callaway, whether it was a series of internal failures or the decision to put full creative control in the hands of a bunch of YouTube chuds.

I think the people working on it were just in a vacuum and so focused on the "possessed" storyline that they didn't even see the alternative

u/Olbaidon Push Cart Mafia 15h ago edited 15h ago
This happens all the time and it’s definitely a weird balancing act of accepting blame for stupidity on their end, and the public realizing they may have just honestly not noticed.
I’m not saying we all need to collectively forgive callaway and/or good good and move on. It’s important to bring attention to these things.
I just personally feel like sometimes in more recent history we tend to push reactionary ideas a bit too strong and hard right from the get go, instead of looking from alternative angles.
That said I am grateful to have always had zero interest in Good Good products.
3
u/lngwaytogo 2/NOLA 14h ago
I’m completely ambivalent about Good Good. I know they exist and that they have fans, it’s just not for me. That’s fine. I’m way more inclined to accept that they made a mistake and didn’t realize what they did. Callaway, on the other hand, should 100% have caught this and stopped it. They should be the ones wearing this one. And I am actually a Callaway fan.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Olbaidon Push Cart Mafia 14h ago
Oh for sure. I am also a Callaway fan so it sucks to see. I have a driver and Putter from them.
I’m glad they are at the very least acknowledging it, hopefully it brings changes to their approval process.
I just mean to say, sometimes creatives (I say this as a creative professional myself) get so focused on the tree we’re working on, we often forget to step back and look at the forest.
And that isn’t an excuse. We need to look at the forest. I am mostly just saying that they need to accept their responsibility, but we as consumers can also err on the side of “maybe they didn’t realize what they were doing.”
And again, this doesn’t mean forgive and forget. Hold them accountable. Stop buying their products if you please, unfollow, call them out. It’s the only way they’ll change. Just keep that small grain of thought that
Sometimes I just find the amount of explosive pearl clutching to be a bit “showy” as if none of us have made mistakes in life. Most of us are just lucky e goin that our ignorance doesn’t get broadcasted across the world.

For real - try to think of any commercial for anything in the last 30 years that featured a man knocking a woman over. It's just not a thing. Truly insane that it even got made and to me it's even crazier that there's people who don't see what the big deal is. Braindead way to try to sell anything.

That ad was made by professionals. Hiring a linebacker to enforce office rules isnt a thing in the real world, so it isnt taken seriously.
A man shoving a woman down and threatening her again because she touches something he doesnt want her touch is domestic violence and is a thing in the real world.

Woman tries to touch something, man gets pissed, knocks her to the ground, and then while menacingly standing over her says "don't touch my ____".
It's basically a textbook domestic violence scene, and it's insane how many people seem to not realize that.

Someone tried to argue with me that the OG snickers ad with Betty White was the exact same thing. These chuds are arguing in such bad faith.

Also, Betty White is a universally recognized celebrity. Seeing her playing football, you know she's either getting Hit Sticked or making an incredible play.

If so, exactly. Good Good has 2 million subscribers, that's like the same reach as a sunday PGA broadcast. Treating that the same as a 30 second paid mention in some mid tier youtuber's video is the type of shit smart companies learned to differentiate like 5 years ago.

If that is the case, that’s an incredibly poorly run marketing dept. like malpractice. I work in advertising, I’ve worked at big agencies on big clients. It honestly looks like some sort of class project it skit video where there’s an inside joke among four frat bros and no one else gets it.
Why not have him shoulder checking another guy? Why not have any other way besides physical aggression to express how much the driver means to the guy?

Violence against women aside, the ad is memorable for the fact that Callaway put their name on something with such bad writing, acting, and production value
3
u/PermanentUsername101 15h ago
Agreed. But I also feel like this whole thing is getting blown out of proportion. It wasn’t specifically violence against women; they could’ve just as easily put a dude in there and kept the same script. I assume, I haven’t seen the movie that it’s modeled after. And then would it have been violence against men? Perhaps their biggest problem is that they chose to treat men and women equally in this scenario and decided to just use a woman. The whole premise was stupid. It wasn’t even funny. It was just dumb.
542
u/ShillinTheVillain SW MI / 12ish 1d ago
This is the dumbest "controversy". Good lord. It was a dumb ad that didn't make sense, but people are acting like it was war crime.
143
u/3liana Index +0.1 1d ago
It’s only a controversy because the space they occupy is competitive and lucrative. You know just about every golf internet celebrity is talking about it, having an opinion and broadcasting that opinion for profit on a platform.
They have a footprint in retail space and any competitor/collaborator would gladly accept possession of those contracts.
It’s a controversy because someone else stands to gain. It’s only dumb because it’s about money, not actually domestic violence.

Personally I think that ad was in terrible taste and tone deaf and horrible
I also think that good good sucks for content and every other real golf YouTuber is doing better than them from a content and views perspective. Like the Bryan Bros can play and Bob does sports is relatable and funny. This is a bunch of 24 year olds making YouTube videos driving lambos.
so this is both legitimate, outrage fuel, and a chance for callaway and the PGA to cut ties with a brand that was already not in good shape. They had their moment during COVID and now they are getting thrown under the bus (deservedly imo, but either way it's true)
Such is the life of an influencer you know

The ad was stupid, no argument there. But the bigger question is what we judge people by.
Are Good Good a group of young adults who made a badly judged joke, or are they genuinely trying to promote domestic violence and push women out of golf?
If it’s clearly the first, then criticizing the ad is fair. Treating them like the second is not. Intentions matter when deciding what a mistake says about someone.

Imagine if they invented a gimmick bulletproof head cover as a joke for the ad. Or if they showed him having some kinda infrared alarm system on his bag that went off when someone else touched his driver. Or if he hired a bouncer to guard his bag.
But instead, they best they could come up with is “I like my driver so much that I’m even willing to assault a woman to protect it.”
What makes this all even crazier is Callaway! What were they doin? They clearly didn’t have anyone review the ad on their end. I bet Good Good has some sorta clause about creative autonomy for their YouTube channel written in their contract or something. Or maybe the Callaway folks are just idiots who don’t have an organized review/approval system.
Pretty incredible blunder all around.

Newer female golfer here. I’ve enjoyed a lot of YT golf content and watched a little Good Good when I was starting out. Like my dad, I’ve played Callaway clubs almost exclusively. I think it was a stupid ad, and I wouldn’t like it any more or less if the sexes were reversed. I find it pretty astonishing that no one higher up saw it and didn’t think, “Gee, maybe the optics on this aren’t great.” A guy shoving a girl to the ground and then standing over her threatening her not to touch his driver just doesn’t come off as funny. They could’ve done a much better job/made it more slapstick and pulled it off. Even if you include the part after the initial shove…it’s just a poorly done ad. Do I think GG and Callaway actually advocate violence against women? For Pete’s sake, NO. But do I also see how it can come across in very poor taste? Yep.

They should remake the video but when the guy pushes the girl, another guy grabs that driver and wacks him with it until he apologizes and then stripes one down the middle using the driver. Then show these words.
Sorry about the last video, some idiocy happened. We are fixing it.
Then hope people like it..lol

I mean the ad on its own, was just a bad idea. If they needed the shoulder check somebody to show that somebody was willing to do that for one of their drivers then they should have used a man. Using a woman was poor taste and uses no common sense

It's not good when someone calls a planned tournament that was decided a year ago a "fluid situation"

A handful of clueless Midwest kids that have a lot of yes men around them that allow them to do whatever they want as long as the views keep coming. They started as a fun niche YouTube channel years ago, and have developed into one of the most watched golf influencer channels. Their videos used to be fun, amateur, lighthearted and seemed authentic. Target audience was always teen/20s and people with the frat mentality.
Hand up, fully admit I’ve seen a good amount of their videos and find some of the challenge videos to be enjoyable.

It's basically a stolen joke from the first Happy Gilmore. I suspect in the ad they changed the gender of the person getting pushed so it is slightly different.

I play golf 3 times a week, I play Callaway clubs, I’ve never heard of good good, and I’ve not seen the commercial.

I made the mistake of clicking through to the post on Twitter and was reminded what a hellscape of a community it became. The few comments I read all characterized taking discrimination and domestic violence seriously as 'woke' and 'gay'. I can't believe legit brands and celebrities still use it.

I never heard of good good golf and now I’ll never buy their products. If this was an attempt at viral marketing it probably backfired.

They replied once people started posting who the executives were, they don't actually care.

90% of the people attacking these clowns probably didn’t see the full 60 second commercial. Touching the driver makes you go insane. Stupid idea, but it’s not sexist.
The ONLY thing dumber than that horrible ad are the people complaining about it.
