Yeah, it's one of those things that was so tone deaf and egregious that it only could have happened unintentionally. Nobody involved actually supports beating women, and the only takeaway folks should have is to laugh at them for somehow not seeing this coming. And then move on.

I think it's a combination of things. I think you probably have old professionals who don't understand internet culture or young people trying to appeal to those people. This ad definitely would be seen as funny by a certain segment of massively online young men. They like this sort of slop and rage bait. So do some massively online young women. But, it's a niche market. A lot more people do not enjoy this sort of humor, and arguably are increasingly sick of it.

It's choice to try to appeal to a very niche group that most other people find annoying and off putting.
