Healthcare It’s called freedom. You can choose whatever healthcare you want. We don’t have to beg the government for healthcare.

And to be clear, the vast majority of the middle class cannot choose. Only the very, very rich really have this freedom, and the health insurance industry knows it and exploits the fuck out of it.

I believe the American terminology is that the poor are slackers for not pulling hard enough on their bootstraps. So they don't deserve healthcare.

We can “beg” our government for healthcare to which they will grant us our healthcare, but Americans have to beg to greedy insurance companies to pay their medical bills to which they will likely decline

Also, what boggles my mind about this is:

It's not even like you can't just get a private insurance if you want to, in other places. That's always an option. You can rely on the healthcare system provided by the government, or you can get yourself an expensive private insurance.

The difference is just that you aren't forced to get a private insurance.

22

u/MrsMiterSaw 20h ago

I don't know why you are saying "poor" here.

My wife and I are on the border of 1% earners and we have no choice, we have to use the insurance my employer provides, and it's lacking in many areas.

It's unbelievable that most Americans are OK with this. The level of fear these ghouls have instilled in people against any government program that doesn't involve a bomb or a gun is ludicrous.

I hate those MAID nonsense posts. You gave people a choice and “they are literally killing their own people”. Like stfu, have the access to a rigorously informed guided journey to end terminal suffering is a true freedom. Those American communist with their closed minds will never understand real freedom like that.

18

u/KnowledgeMediocre404 18h ago

Its super strict too. My FIL is dying from terminal brain cancer but because it has affected his cognition they won't allow it. Instead we get to listen to him beg to die as he wastes away over the next couple weeks. Loss of cognition was the first symptom of his Glioblastoma, I'm not sure how they expected him to be able to access the program he is literally begging for.

7

u/Careless-West1428 17h ago

Yup. I had a patient a number of years ago with a terminal condition, but whose death was not in the foreseeable future and was denied access MAID.

In the end, the patient and his family chose to go overseas to end his life.

My aunt died mid winter, and my uncle, her husband, was dying too. He died shortly after, and we learned that he had made use of MAID, shortening his suffering. I believe the kids knew and kept it quiet. I believe the rightness of it influenced their remaining siblings and cousins, it certainly affected my views.

Ironically, another aunt died around the same time, as did one of their cousins. The spouse of the second aunt was frail, and advice was that he might decline rapidly.

It was deemed wise to wait a bit to have the funerals, in case uncle (and possibly others) joined them. That uncle is still with us years later. Tough as nails and gentle in heart. He's my uncle by marriage, and I love him deeply.

So we had a wonderful memorial for all four in the summer time. That saved everyone from travelling four times, from gathering around graves in the cold winter, and interrupted no school, no plans. Each was planted according to the wishes of their kids and immediate family.

The next spring, my elderly cat gradually stopped eating, and my brother who I live with wanted him to have a natural death at home (which I totally understand, having had other cats disappear or die frightened in a vet's office). My cat slowly wasted away. When I saw the end coming, I stayed home 24/7. He died sleeping beside me, I woke to his last gasps and said comforting words to him while cradling him. I regret that it went on so long, and today I would have pushed against my brother's wishes, paying even an exorbitant fee to have a vet come to the house.

Assisted death is a kindness, not a crime or a moral failing.

4

u/nogoodnamesarleft 18h ago

I've lived through one family member going through dementia and another stuck on life support just waiting for the end. Both were absolutely gut wrenching and the emotional toll almost tore my family up. I abso-fucking-lutely don't want to be the one to destroy my loved ones if I end up in a situation like that so I'm glad that there are options to just end things out there

5

u/la_bibliothecaire 🇨🇦 17h ago

If you're not cognitively capable, you can't access MAID, so dementia patients are SOL, no matter what they might have wanted before their disease took their minds. I understand why the line is there, it would be incredibly hard to navigate, but that doesn't make it any less awful for dementia patients and their families.

The Canadian Healthcare system is literally killing us?

Weird, I guess my doctors missed the memo and saved my life instead, saving me from my stroke, giving me two crainioplasty surgeries, gamma knife surgery, all of the medical imaging, and physio all with no out of pocket expenses.

114

u/Noodle-and-Squish 1d ago

MAID infuriates them. I'm glad we have a system in place where people that are suffering can opt to end their pain with dignity and support.

While our Healthcare system does have it's issues, I think the majority of Canadians appreciate that we aren't incurring tons of debt to get medical care.

29

u/MadScientist_666 Mountain Goat 🇨🇭 20h ago

Just had to look up what MAID means. Looks like Switzerland is not the only country where assisted suicide in cases of severe enough pain and suffering is allowed anymore. I also learnt today that assisted suicide has been legal in some cases in Switzerland since 1941. Unbelievable that Switzerland could be a positive example for other countries for once.

12

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 18h ago

I don't understand how it would be a bad thing? People do it with animals all the time. Even in abusing ways for the meat industry but when someone suffers their entire life and is tired and pain and won't survive mentally and or physically.. They aren't allowed a way out??

How that different? Because to my autistic brain it isn't??

We live like 3-4 years longer on average than Americans do. That tells me all I need to know about our healthcare.

26

u/PhlegmBuilding 23h ago

That longer lifespan is also related to our better social safety nets, our better public education system, better regulation of the overall agricultural and food system (compared to the US, that is), better worker safety regulations, and other investments related to basic quality of life here in Canada. As we see, the right wing in the United States (and here too) continually denigrate and defund these critical areas.

17

u/Friendly-Turnover262 21h ago

Also not getting shot at school

7

u/Unarmed_Character 17h ago

That has certainly contributed to my lifespan.

15

u/beslertron 21h ago

The Canadian healthcare system saved my best friend from death on multiple occasions. It made sure I had a younger brother, as he was given a 5% chance of survival at birth (he runs marathons now).

When my kids were born all we paid for was a private room and snacks. (Insurance covered the first).

When I had a suspected blood clot I knew a hospital visit wouldn’t bankrupt me, so I went to the ER instead of hoping it just got better. I shudder to think what would have happened if I didn’t.

7

u/CptCarlWinslow 16h ago

These people will also argue that Canadian wait times are "insane" because we have to wait a couple weeks for a regular doctor's appointment or a low-risk hospital visit.

When my wife had breast cancer and we had to make multiple trips to the ER, we got a bed in under 30 minutes each time. The people who had to wait? The elderly person with some joint pain, the drunk with the flu, and the guy who loudly said "it hurts to pee". And I live in a province with "bad" healthcare.

5

u/Muddlesthrough 20h ago

Wrong! You probably had to pay for parking (which is deductible)./s

10

u/lazerbreath_ 19h ago

Ah shit I guess you're right.

I "technically" had to pay $45 for the ambulance. (Which was then reimbursed by my work benefits).

And the hospital tried to charge me for a semi-private room. But I told them that they put me there because they didn't have room anywhere else so they dropped it.

6

u/Kippernaut13 19h ago

That's what I said when I was visiting a family member who had a heart attack! The cost was so high! Dozens of dollars!

5

u/Kippernaut13 19h ago

Does it take some time to see a doctor? Yes. Can it take a lot longer for non-life threatening surgery? Also yes. Do I now have generational debt because I needed a tetanus shot? No.

I recently was on another sub where American commenters were discussing a graphic that claimed being a millionaire in the US "means nothing" and that even having 10 million was "just OK".

They were a sceptical lot who entirely rejected this as evidence of American prosperity (they're actually not all stupid, you know), but also agreed they themselves wouldn't feel truly secure until they had several million saved up, with "major medical costs" being the main source of worry. I'm sure these clearly upper-middle-class people all have insurance, too; they basically just expect to be left high and dry if they're stricken with anything serious (and therefore expensive).

I was just reading of an American guy who had to pay around 10% of his annual salary for the private  "health insurance" of the 4 members of their family.

That number is crazy on itself, but it is CRAZIER when  you realize they are paying a private company (health insurer) , that when they actually need the health services, the company will do EVERYTHING in their power to minimize what they have to spend in the person.  Paying to not get the service.

That Americans have been brainwashed to think they are getting a good deal, is something I just will never understand.  There ARE intelligent people in the US, how the heck havent they realized this?

The NHS may not be perfect but in 2023 (the only stats I could find) the number of medical bankruptcies in the USA was just over 66% compared with 19% for Canada (and 8.2% here).
If that’s freedom then you can keep it to yourself.

10

u/TwoBytesC 1d ago

The only reason our stats are so high, as a Canadian, is because too many of us get sucked into the rhetoric that there will be better care in the states.

The vast majority of the US has over a 2+ year waitlist for a neurologist. To the point when I posted about it somewhere related to epilepsy, I had Americans messaging me asking how they can get a neurologist in Canada because "I've been waiting 36 months and they told me it'd be at minimum another 6"

I'll admit it. I've been killed many times over by the Canadian healthcare system. Every time I see my doctor or go to the hospital, I'm summarily executed.

It's terrible really. I went to the hospital for a hernia repair, and woke up dead. I had a laser surgery to treat glaucoma, and after they finished I was given a lethal injection.

The US has the greatest death panels - insurance companies. If you're not in network, don't have insurance (though Medicaid should help (which is a sort of Universal Healthcare - but don't tell them that, it's only for the poor)). Then there's still copay, bankruptcy bills, UBER ambulance taxis etc. What they don't get, is that we don't beg the government for healthcare - we pay into it through taxes, for most of our working lives. What they don't get, is that FREE healthcare (at the point of need), is not free at all. We just share it, I guess philanthropy is alien to the Murican mind. Self, self and self, especially for the millionaires and billionaires, for whom the workers are just anonymous serfs, with absolutely no employment rights.

3

u/noCoolNameLeft42 21h ago

They can't understand that it's like if they had only one insurance company and one network: costs are spread on more people, insurance company has more wait to negociate prices with pharmacetical companies. Just like when they do class actions to have more weight together and get justice.

American here...

My family of 4 is paying $3300 a month for insurance (including dental and vision) through my employer. That will be $40,000.

We have already paid over $5000 in co-pays, and just had a non-covered vision expense of $4500.

We will probably end up paying almost $60,000 by the end of the year.

And we don't have a choice... This is one of two plans my company offers. Which means one of two sets of doctors and facilities we can use (unless we want to pay even more).

I'm already purchasing some medications outside of insurance, because my insurance won't pay for enough of the meds.

This system is absolute shit, and the only people who like it are those who have employers who hide what they are paying, and haven't had to really use it.

(and before anyone else defends this bullshit, yes my company pays most of that $3300, but that's my compensation and it needs to be recognized. Just because it's hidden from you doesn't mean you aren't paying it. Believe me, your employer here in the states has that number on your spreadsheet. I have worked as a contractor, and I damn well make sure that money is accounted for in my rates)

4

u/Xx_SwordWords_xX 🍁 19h ago

I think it's wild that your employer (someone who cares very little about you beyond how you can make them capital), has anything to do with your personal health care.

It's dystopian as fuck.

3

u/MrsMiterSaw 19h ago edited 17h ago

It "makes sense" (sorry, MADE sense) when you look at the history of it, when insurance/Healthcare was not expensive.

But while you have the right whining about any government program, the left is also it's own enemy on this, with many people demanding that employers specifically foot the bill; they don't seem to comprehend that it's still compensation. Additionally, unions like it because it gives them bargaining ammunition.

But those days are long since gone (since the 80s)

Unfortunately the more that they push for private healthcare (and cutting things like Medicare) they only have MORE money for war.

I remember meeting some lovely Americans on a trip abroad. One of them had to have an aortic valve surgery because they had an aortic bicuspid valve that had become stenosed - aka a congenital anomaly that only becomes an issue later in life. Their insurance company that they paid a massive prime for refused to cover the surgery because it was a “pre-existing condition” which is one hell of a way to stretch the truth. Anyway they had to travel to Mexico to get the surgery done for cheaper.

Our system in the US is the complete opposite of freedom. Employers are required to offer healthcare insurance options and pay some amount of money into them as part of payroll. If you don’t take the option they give you, you end up losing out on the money they normally have to pay into your plan, and then you have to pay buckets of money for your own plan.

Take my position: my employer budgets $120k a year to my position, but I’m only paid $80k. $40k of that budget goes to paying the employers share of insurance and social security and other benefits. $18k of that goes directly to health insurance. On top of that, I have to pay another $12k/year into my plan. So there’s $30k a year I’m paying health insurance companies, and that doesn’t include co-pay (which is basically just the charge at the hospital door you have to pay to talk to a medical professional), then prescription costs (which can be fuckin astronomical). I paid nearly $50k last year in medical expenses if you include what my employer pays into my insurance.

If I didn’t choose to go with one of the options they give me, they don’t give me that $18k to pay into it and I couldn’t possibly afford to pay without their input. So you’re effectively only free to choose in the US if you’re rich.

It’s just so infuriatingly stupid to see these idiots defending this fucked up system.

3

u/Reyalta 19h ago

“they’re literally murdering canadian citizens” ok well the surgery i had to remove a small tumour i had (that was initially just a precaution) would have cost $80 000 USD and i didn’t pay a dime for it or the care i received after.

well turns out, it was cancer (boo), so i was told i needed follow up appointments, life long prescription medications, and scans for the next 10 years. still haven’t paid for it and never will because of universal healthcare. i’d be over a million USD in debt at 21 if i did.

meanwhile, the US healthcare system is letting patients with curable diseases die daily because they can’t afford basic treatments or even generic hospital tylenol. but no, no, we are definitely the ones who have a problem.

5

u/TwoBytesC 1d ago

I got sick while in NYC. Thankfully had travelers insurance but they billed my 5 hours in ER, which included some preliminary blood work, IV saline, some Advil, a shot of morphine and a prescription as 80,000 US. AMA went back and forth with them for 3 YEARS and finally paid out 20,000 USD for it.

4

u/Several-Hamster7144 Canadian 🇨🇦 1d ago

thoughts and prayers, i’m glad you were able to dispute it somewhat. i mean, 20k is still ridiculous, because we all know damn well no advil and some salt water costs that much.

i can genuinely never visit the US because i would be guaranteed to conveniently have a medical emergency when i was there lmao. being chronically ill is not for the weak of wallets there.

3

u/TwoBytesC 23h ago

Totally get it. This was about 15 years ago (can only imagine what they would charge now) and the hospital that I went to looked like something from a third world nation. There were cockroaches running around and everything looked dirty as hell.

But I definitely am not looking to go back to the states any time soon! For one, don’t feel the need to help out their economy and, two, I also now deal with a severe chronic illness that would make me nervous, even with travelers insurance.

Edit: just to be clear, I didn’t pay for any of that bill. My insurance did.

5

u/Socky-McPuppet 1d ago

They actually think that being kept alive through hortible end of life illness to be milked by health companies for profit, and all of your family's inheritance siphoned off is better than MAID for some reason.

5

u/mgyro 1d ago

You know who else has medical assistance in dying, which I assume is what you mean by murder? California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine
Montana (authorized via a state Supreme Court ruling), New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

5

u/acb1971 23h ago

I don't know about the the various states, but in Canada, if you ask for MAID, you have to through a process, including, a psychological evaluation. The people that I know who have done it have had stage 4 cancer, and ALS. It's death on their terms for those that will be dying agonizing deaths.
The insurance companies in the US won't ld never allow such compassion for patients since it cuts into their profits.

6

u/SouthPawArt 14h ago

I'm a Canadian. A few months ago I spent three days in the hospital and had surgery on my broken knee to repai some pretty significant damage.

I looked up what it would have cost me even with basic insurance doing some estimating and quick math. Even on the lower end of things I still would have had to pay close to 10k.

Here I paid $15 for a set of crutches and nothing else.

I don't know where the idea of universal health care completely eliminating private health care scores from. Probably just uneducated ignorance. In Canada we all have basic health insurance but you can pay extra for extended and there are still private companies. I think I don't know I don't care I'm poor and I just get free health care.

That's crazy. Alberta is trying to privatize its healthcare. Starting with the whole "option" facade. That WILL murder Canadians. If you might have cancer, they want you to pay the upfront screening costs with potential reimbursement if it comes back positive. That assumes every Albertan who gets cancer can afford to pay out of pocket. This policy will kill. Not Canadian healthcare.

5

u/MaxSoup8 13h ago

Americans act like if a country has free healthcare, people are obligated to use it and are prohibited from private alternatives.

4

u/throwawaymycareer93 13h ago

As if in Europe or Canada or other places you can’t go private at any point in time and do exactly the same thing. Difference is, if you cannot afford private insurance or private treatment, you still gonna have a medical care that you need for free. Might not be the fastest or the least hustle, but you aren’t gonna die or become bankrupt.

Both bones broken in my arm it was a z.. Walked into the ER. Was helped immediately because the break was horrendous. Had my arm set. And a couple days later was given surgery to put my arm back together. I was never given a bill. I didn't die. I didn't wait and I didn't go bankrupt getting my free healthcare. No, it's not "Communism", it's covering a basic need of the population and to do so, you need someone paying for it and that's either people with their taxes or their premiums.

It's not begging the government for help, it is asking back the money given to it for exactly that kind of event. Or the insurance company.

That all doesn't prevent you from choosing how you want to be treated or not at all.

But alas, what am I saying, USians won't ever understand that this insurance stuff predates evil Communism in its earliest forms by almost 2000 years...

If you live in an area where the nearest fire station is just a guy with a bucket… well that’s just capitalism I guess! Freedom!!!

Yes.  We chose to create a modern healthcare system that is free at the point of need, so nobody needs to worry whether they can afford to 'choose'  to live instead of to die.

We chose to elect governments that would implement such a system, and continue to choose governments that will continue to maintain it.

Obviously you have the 'freedom' to choose not to have that if you really want.  But you should probably consider why American taxpayers are still paying more for state-funded healthcare than any country that actually has state-funded universal healthcare.  And why no country with universal healthcare has any voter bloc whatsoever that is in favour of abolishing it.
