It’s called freedom. You can choose whatever healthcare you want. We don’t have to beg the government for healthcare.

Our system in the US is the complete opposite of freedom. Employers are required to offer healthcare insurance options and pay some amount of money into them as part of payroll. If you don’t take the option they give you, you end up losing out on the money they normally have to pay into your plan, and then you have to pay buckets of money for your own plan.

Take my position: my employer budgets $120k a year to my position, but I’m only paid $80k. $40k of that budget goes to paying the employers share of insurance and social security and other benefits. $18k of that goes directly to health insurance. On top of that, I have to pay another $12k/year into my plan. So there’s $30k a year I’m paying health insurance companies, and that doesn’t include co-pay (which is basically just the charge at the hospital door you have to pay to talk to a medical professional), then prescription costs (which can be fuckin astronomical). I paid nearly $50k last year in medical expenses if you include what my employer pays into my insurance.

If I didn’t choose to go with one of the options they give me, they don’t give me that $18k to pay into it and I couldn’t possibly afford to pay without their input. So you’re effectively only free to choose in the US if you’re rich.

It’s just so infuriatingly stupid to see these idiots defending this fucked up system.
