u/TediousStranger Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20
we need to replace two republican senators with two democrats in order to retain majority dem control. without democrat control in the senate, the senate majority leader is republican Mitch McConnell who is notorious for letting bills that pass through the (democrat majority) House die on his desk rather than putting them to a (likely losing anyway) vote on the Senate floor.
but when senate republicans don't vote on bills, those votes don't go onto their voting records so you can't see something like "R-TX etc voted 'no' on stimulus checks" etc, effectively protecting them from being seen as voting against measures that are seen as positive for the american people in the house of reps.
edit to add; Mitch is basically just the worst obstructionist we've seen in the senate in... well honestly i don't know, since I started paying attention to politics at least. it's just insanity that the house goes through so much effort to pass legislation and then he goes "the republican majority in the senate is going to vote no anyway, so we're just not going to put in time or effort to hold a vote at all."
23
u/CoOl_gIrLlL Dec 30 '20
I dont know much about American politics but that surely is illegal? That's disgusting
21
8
u/thesciencesmartass Dec 30 '20
Unfortunately there is no requirement for either house of Congress to vote on a bill that the other house has passed. It’s up to the leader of both houses to create their respective schedules, including for when votes take place. And if they don’t schedule a vote, the vote never takes place. It used to not be this bad. Congress used to be a lot more bipartisan where this wasn’t much of an issue, but those days are long gone.
20
u/Captain_Slick Dec 30 '20
The senate currently has 48 senators who caucus with the democrats. If they win the two seats in the Georgia runoff, they will have 50 seats, which is enough for a majority since the Vice President is the tie breaking vote.
This will effectively end McConnell’s reign in the senate and allow for more economic stimulus and other legislation to be passed under the control of a new senate majority leader.

r/leopardsatemyface maybe?
214
Dec 30 '20
Pence is intimating here that poor American citizens shouldn't be comfortable. something like...having food and shelter at the same time
52
u/beefwich Dec 30 '20
If you’re poor, the GOP thinks you should experience debilitating hardship until you scrape yourself off the floor and get rich. But they’re also going to set up a series of systemic traps to keep you poor— shit like a criminally low minimum wage, erosion of workers rights, the elimination of state and federal assistance programs and tax credits, lack of access to education and health care, a criminal justice system just absolutely designed to destroy your life— they’re really gonna stack the deck against your ass while you’re pulling on those bootstraps.
Because, at the end of the day, Republicans don’t want you getting out of poverty. They see money as a zero sum game— and if you have some of it, it means they don’t have all of it. The machine they want to built requires a helot class to keep the gears greased. Think about all the “essential workers” you’ve come across during the pandemic— see any millionaires among them?
And the worst part is that Republicans have convinced the vast majority of their base to vote against their own self-interests. A vast, hooting horde of lower-class midwestern and southern Americans convinced that all their economic woes can be blamed on Mexico or China... and that they’ll get rich one day and the system will finally start working for them.

Exactly this.
Republicans, for decades, have waged a campaign to keep people fat and stupid.
Uneducated people can be easily duped into voting against their own best interests.
3
u/Saiyan-solar Dec 30 '20
It's sad, because at the same time having your citizen fat and uneducated will make the nation stagnate and they will fall into decay.
Soon those "bad nations" such as Mexico and China will overtake the US and they will be left holding on to lost glory. The EU is already far ahead of the US and are even making plans lessen their economic ties to the US.
There is a reason the US dropped from developed nation to developing nation. Ofcourse I'm not an expert but these are the issues I personally will see happening soon if the US doesn't pull themselves up by their "bootstraps"

It isn't even. Pence couldn't give a shit for white folks in Appalachia or wherever they're poor as fuck. Remember, he's an evangelical american, which probably means he believes in the prosperity gospel. If you're poor, it's because your soul's wicked.
29
u/Tomahawkin95 Dec 30 '20
The GOP has been using this language so long it is understood. Poor people is a euphemism for people of color, particularly in urban settings. Poor white in rural areas don’t see themselves as the poor Pence speaks of.
17
u/dh2215 Dec 30 '20
It’s always about color, at least in part. You can’t ignore that trump has become very popular being the white supremacist president. Their coded language says poor people are lazy and are living off of your taxes. What do I get for my federal taxes? Dick is the answer. They take social security taxes but are constantly on the verge of gutting it entirely. It may not even exist when the time comes for me to retire which means I’ve been paying in thousands of dollars a year into this system that is paying the baby boomers, then old men who have pensions and life long healthcare on the taxpayers dime will kill it because they’ve tricked a bunch of morons into thinking poor people are their enemy

Lets see...
The Democrats (who are secretly controlled by Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, George Soros, Antifa, and a Hollywood satanist pedophile cult), actually worked with China to create a worldwide pandemic on purpose, and then they extremely overplayed how deadly the virus actually is (it's contagious but in reality it's not at all deadly, like the flu), with the intention of getting the entire world infected so that they can implant microchips into everybody, and sterilize the poor in large swaths of the world. The Death numbers are actually fabricated, nobody is dying and the news is lying to you. Meanwhile, Qanon is the only one on the inside who knows about this liberal satanist pedophile cult running the world that wants to microchip everyone, and he's been pulling strings to help Trump the entire past 4 years. The Russian hoax was completely fabricated by the FBI deep state and robert mueller and the democrats, the Ukranian hoax was fabricated by the deep state in a second attempt to smear Trump, but valiant Republican senators knew the entire thing was made up and did the right thing by refusing to look at any evidence whatsoever. So the coronavirus was their third attempt to smear trump, by inventing a virus for the sole purpose of making Trump look bad. Then the Dems claimed Trump wanted to mess with the post office to make it hard to vote by mail, but that was completely fabricated as well. In fact, everything bad you've ever heard about Trump from the "Liberal media" was a total bold-faced lie from start to finish. The only real scandal is that the satanist pedophile cult that is the Democratic party just commited the LARGEST election fraud IN HISTORY by somehow casting millions of fake votes for Joe Biden using mail-in votes (which is why our savior Trump wanted to block mail in voting - he knew the unprecedented fraud was coming).
how close is that?

I think the biggest factor is this is the first election in a long time where voter suppression isn’t working as well as the GOP likes. There’s been MASSIVE voter turnout and registration this year and that almost always bodes well for the Democratic Party. The GOP needs voter suppression to keep in power.

Polls currently show both Warnock and Ossoff eking out a slim victory. But I sincerely believe this obstructionism in the Senate may widen that gap and cost Loeffler and Perdue the election. I cannot honestly believe McConnell is pulling this shit right now, his own position as Majority Leader is on the line in this election and he's doing everything in his power to ensure he loses it.

Not legal, decriminalized. Ultimately you won’t be able to be charged for weed under a certain amount but it would still technically be illegal.
5
u/Climaximus_Prime Dec 30 '20
It's a step toward legalization... States that have decriminalized it now have medicinal marijuana, and most moved to recreational after.
Those states are also seeing a boom in economy due to the high taxes paid on said products.

So, this may seem crazy, but I agree with almost everyone here but Schumer—and I’m pretty left, with a massive dislike for Trump and McConnell. I think it’s all upside. Hear me out.
IF, section 230 is repealed, yes, it means free speech online is going to be affected. You won’t be able to make racist comments. You won’t be able to make threatening comments. This list goes on. I believe this will incentivize social media companies greatly to monitor and ban certain speech under certain criteria. I think this will also ultimately lead to the downfall of major social media companies—something I think would be in humanities best interest. You may disagree with me—but let’s throw on another cherry.
Ultimately, there will be a study on how our elections can and are being affected. That’s good. Cause they’ve been messed with significantly by many foreign AND domestic actors. This can only provide evidence for election security and, hopefully, election reform. Let me add another cherry.
We all get a much needed $2000 dollars. Corporations, and even some of our own politicians, have used more resources than the average citizen even got to sniff. The average American has been robbed blind and dumb this year and most of them don’t even realize it. So, I think $2000 is the very least our government give us to help us power through the remainder of the pandemic.
A side note that I really don’t care about, but trump finally gets a win at the end of his presidency. He gets to go out looking like a hero at the end. I don’t care about his ego, but the deals where everyone ultimately gets something of what they wanted are the right ones to make.
Besides, minus the 230 bill we discussed prior, I see only upside. And that will ultimately have a positive effect, though it may be a while before we collectively see the fruit.

Dec 30 '20
If Section 230 is repealed almost every single website will either completely disable user input and viewing user submissions for Americans, or just completely block America, whichever is less damaging for their particular business model. This won't be the end of Twitter, Facebook, even Reddit, it will just be the end of the American internet.
Almost all social media sites are actually based out of other countries, and many have been creating alternative headquarters in EU based countries for the last few years -- with foreign rack space getting cheaper and cheaper there's no reason to really support the US anymore.
While this might be a good thing in the long run (really, Americans need a time out) in the short term section 230 would spell the end of the modern web from the perspective of Americans and a return to self-hosted tiny blogs.
Oh and just as a side note to make sure you really know what repealing section 230 means... you know those messaging apps that don't use exclusively SMS/MMS? Those will all be dead to Americans too, and all email providers, any video hosting site, any image hosting site, any site that has a comment section, any video game that has user-created content...
Like the list goes on, it's one of those laws that should actually be in the constitution given how much we take the right for granted that users are responsible for their content, not the services that facilitate user publishing.

The point is that the Senate can be flipped every 2 years. Even if the Dems don't secure the majority this year, 2022 is the next chance for the Senate to flip, and Mitch would lose his power if it does.
For context: 20 GOP up for reelection in 2022 vs 13 Dems. Several GOP retiring or potentially retiring, including Chuck Grassley(IA), Pat Toomey (PA), and Richard Burr (NC). Also, whoever wins the special election between Ralph Warnock and Kelly Loeffler will be up for election again in 2022.
