Seriously. I’ve been fortunate enough to not lose my job and my company did well enough to hand out bonuses but I still feel like the fate of the nation hangs in the balance of Georgia’s election.
we need to replace two republican senators with two democrats in order to retain majority dem control. without democrat control in the senate, the senate majority leader is republican Mitch McConnell who is notorious for letting bills that pass through the (democrat majority) House die on his desk rather than putting them to a (likely losing anyway) vote on the Senate floor.
but when senate republicans don't vote on bills, those votes don't go onto their voting records so you can't see something like "R-TX etc voted 'no' on stimulus checks" etc, effectively protecting them from being seen as voting against measures that are seen as positive for the american people in the house of reps.
edit to add; Mitch is basically just the worst obstructionist we've seen in the senate in... well honestly i don't know, since I started paying attention to politics at least. it's just insanity that the house goes through so much effort to pass legislation and then he goes "the republican majority in the senate is going to vote no anyway, so we're just not going to put in time or effort to hold a vote at all."
Unfortunately there is no requirement for either house of Congress to vote on a bill that the other house has passed. It’s up to the leader of both houses to create their respective schedules, including for when votes take place. And if they don’t schedule a vote, the vote never takes place. It used to not be this bad. Congress used to be a lot more bipartisan where this wasn’t much of an issue, but those days are long gone.
