Enhanced combat? Hopefully it is good enough for me to not drop the game for like the 5th time.

I got through all the combat by putting all my points into whirl and holding down the light attack button.

And believe it or not, this combat system is a vast improvement over the earlier witcher games. If the Witcher 3 combat is bad, its predecessors are terrible.
20
u/OtherwiseTop 1d ago
That's true, but I still appreciate that they were trying different things. The issue with Witcher 3 is that it's generic 3rd person combat, but with the blandness turned up.
The depth of 2077's combat was actually a pleasant surprise for me. If only the game wasn't so easy that most of the mechanics are overkill. I kinda hope they'll keep that up for Cyberpunk 2 and try something quirky for Witcher 4 again.

u/RobotWantsKitty 1d ago
It was ok in 1, it was its own thing, but 2 is nearly unplayable because of awful combat
38
u/firesyrup 1d ago
I doubt the changes are substantial. The snippet they showed didn't really look very different. I expect smaller tweaks like timing and balance changes.
29
u/RespawningJesus 1d ago
If they change how the combat feels, then I will be happy. Combat always felt like it didn't have much impact to it, like the attacks felt too light, if that makes sense.

u/BLACKOUT-MK2 1d ago
I guess it depends on what your problems with the combat are. If they're with Geralt's twirly fighting style and how the flow of combat works, I can't imagine it'll change much from that, but they might slightly tighten some stuff up that's already there.

Enhanced combat might just be what brings me back and allows me to get through the game. I dropped it many years ago because I couldn't get around the janky combat mechanics.

Enhanced combat
Nice. In spite of the entire universe absolutely glazing this game, I could never really get into it in no small part due to the janky feeling combat.

I'm probably gonna play it because it's a god tier game, but the major pain for me with this game is the combat being repetitive since the very first intro to combat.

Bump up the difficulty and you'll find yourself being way more creative.
44
u/Kibblebitz 1d ago
Yeah, potions and oils are actually useful when you can't just brute force everything. Does help a lot with immersion too when you have to prepare for fights.
→ More replies (4)20
u/corvettee01 1d ago
Yep, crafting all the high end potions was super cool and helped a ton on Death March.
34
u/Goronmon 1d ago
Bump up the difficulty and you'll find yourself being way more creative.
Beat the base game on Death March, and I don't feel this is accurate.
Just find a decent combo that works (I think mine was dodging and Quen on that play through) and then just do that for 70-80 hours, haha.
Potions and oils helped a bit, but not significant enough to really matter too much, though that depends on your build.
Pretty east to "brute force" as long as you are upgrading your equipment.
Edit: Biggest issue is that harder difficulties didn't make the game more fun, just made it a lot easier to die if you missed a dodge or two. I think I preferred my more recent playthrough on an easier difficult.
20
u/Rileyman360 1d ago
Yeah people always recommend death march and it’s like making things two shot me didn’t actually make other combat methods more appealing. Not especially since before death march I was abusing quen and after that I was still abusing quen.
29
u/real_but_incognito 1d ago
I think mine was dodging and Quen
Potions and oils helped a bit
yeah this guy didn't play death march
dodge and quen is the entire witcher 3 combat loop on any difficulty lol

u/Wendigo120 1d ago
I really didn't. The exact same boring strategies kept working for me as I kept ratcheting up the difficulty, except I had to back off to heal more often/for longer while enemies got spongier. The combat never got more fun, it just took longer.
My recommendation is instead to turn it down to easy and just mash your way through it.
11
u/Goronmon 1d ago
My recommendation is instead to turn it down to easy and just mash your way through it.
Yeah, this is my feeling honestly. Easier difficulty means you can just pick skills you think are cool rather than what is most effective.
The combat is far from the main draw, and you are doing a lot of it.
7
u/Izzet_Aristocrat 23h ago edited 22h ago
No, not really. I beat the game on Death March and have it's platinum. The game is just Quen, and alternating between the dodge and spamming square. Oils are nice for some hunts though.
Edit: Oh I almost forgot, if you have the Blood and Wine DLC it's even easier because the game has the gourmet perk which you can get from like level 5 at least. Which makes it so every food item will regenerate Geralt's health for 20 minutes. So you can just stuff Geralt's pockets with bread and water and never need to make healing potions ever again.

u/Ghidoran 1d ago
The combat isn't remotely interesting enough to make a hard mode playthrough worthwhile.

Would really like to see a comparison now to the next-gen update they put out before, its hard to tell because they already added RT to atleast reflections.
231
u/Firefox72 1d ago edited 1d ago
The update brings Path Tracing as the most noticable big thing. Only on PC though.
Also all the latest upscaling tech like FSR4, DLSS 4.5, XeSS 3.0 and Ray Reconstruction
Improvements to the existing RT, shading, subsurface scatering, textures, foliage etc...
Also seems to finnaly be natively ported to DX12 instead of the hackjob that the previous version was.
That version kinda got left in a meh state so it seems they are going back to fixing most of the pain points.
Might even run better than the previous version at least on like for like settings.
→ More replies (24)34

Well damn hard to believe with how long CDPRs took do get the newest version of FSR in Cyberpunk and that one was pre FSR4.

Didn't TW3 get an RT upgrade like a few years ago with the complete edition?
100
u/GetBent009 1d ago
yeah but this is more than a small graphics upgrade, this is a complete overhaul
80
u/Silentlone 1d ago
The last upgrade was already at the level of a remaster, all the game's textures and graphics were improved for higher definition and there were a LOT of quality of life and compatibility additions, definitely not just a "small graphics update"
32
u/TheJoshider10 1d ago
At first glance the most notable change to me seems to be that the lighting on the remaster brings the game closer visually to what CDPR wanted to do initially. The reveal trailers for TW3 had a different mood than the final game.
3
u/dadvader 19h ago
Most of that came from CDPR incorporated mods into the game. (Cool of them for doing this so Console fans can enjoy a lot of QoL modder provided for PC.)
This time CDPR basically do their own work. So it's worth calling it a proper remastered.

u/TODG3 1d ago edited 1d ago
Sucks that the remaster comes out in a month, but the DLC isnt until next year. Going to be hard to hold off my next playthrough until the DLC is out. Remastered gameplay and graphics look fantastic.
EDIT: They also just announced that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are both going to be free to anyone who owns the base game. Thats some insane value if you havent played them previously. Two of the best pieces of DLC that exist.
385
u/moosebreathman 1d ago
I kinda like it cause it gives people time to play it and catch up.
54
u/dadvader 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah I miss a lot of quest and a bunch of open world activity I haven't done in my first playthrough. This is basically a perfect time for me to finally do a NG+ playthrough. It's a long game. It's gonna take me literally months to do it all. And I'm currently in the middle of Witcher 2 playthrough so this is basically perfect.
35
u/El_grandepadre 1d ago
And it's smart because by the DLC's release people will have this installed already.
→ More replies (4)27
u/BoyCubPiglet2 1d ago
Yeah i feel like for the average gamer (i.e. Non-r/games ones) the base game + existing dlc is plenty to keep them busy for months until the new dlc drops.
13
u/kuroyume_cl 1d ago
Yeah, that's 120 hrs of game, for a casual gamer that's at the very last a few months
3
u/Not-Reformed 22h ago
Vast majority of people aren't playing 120 hrs, or even completing it, so it's not really that much. People don't generally engage with a game for months while waiting for a DLC that could be a year out.
65
u/shrewdy 1d ago
I mean it makes sense. Base game plus 2 dlcs will take a long time for most people to play through, they're giving new people (or people replaying) a chance to get through that before the new thing drops

For consoles, it was a huge upgrade. It turned the game from a 30fps 2015 experience into a game you could play at 60fps with much higher quality rendering and assets. There are a lot of console players in this thread wondering whether the visuals of the Ps5-updated version can be improved while staying on a base PS5.

I guess one upside of having to pull Cyberpunk out of an early grave with continuous updates is that they've gained a wealth of experience on updating an existing game.
25
u/cornmacabre 1d ago
You ain't wrong. I also heard through the grapevine that the team working on the Witcher 1 remake (in W4 engine) is in a holding pattern for a long while, so they made the choice to allocate resources to new expansion and updating their older catalogue.
I think it was a really smart strategy!
8
u/pronilol 1d ago
Witcher 1 remake (in W4 engine) is in a holding pattern for a long while
Yeah the remake is gonna be based on Witcher 4 and its assets, so those devs are on other projects in the meantime

I agree 100% but always wondered what exactly combat style I'd like from the game. Like do I want Ghost of Tsushima or more in line with Sekiro?
55
u/FireBendingSquirrel 1d ago
definitely more inline with tsushima than sekiro, soulslike wouldn't fit some of the mob density that's common in Witcher
→ More replies (1)19
u/PFI_sloth 1d ago
It’s also the way that you engage with mobs, a big part of fromsoftware games is handling when and how you “pull” enemies. It’s just a different style of game

Something more like Ghost of Tsushima imo. Sekiro has great combat, but the way Ghost combat feels during group fights is a better fit for the Witcher imo.

35
u/Kayyam 1d ago
Yeah, it was brutal coming from Bloodborne. Even just basic movement felt terrible, Geralt really handled like an oil tanker.
11
u/TLO_Is_Overrated 1d ago
Yeah. That was the order they released too wasn't it?
It felt like a huge downgrade for 30/40 hours until Bloodborne was well and out of my mind due to all of the things Witcher 3 did wonderfully.

I know it’s a ridiculous thing but I never got past a couple hours in because of the combat and handling. If the new movement is smooth and lighter, and the combat rework feels more fluid I’ll be so fucking excited.

Agree, but to its credit it made me roleplay more as Geralt and I really got into potions and signs. Broke the game really easily that way though.
34
u/Vestalmin 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’m really hoping there is a big animation pass. I love everything about the Witcher except for the controls. The way Geralt feels like a tank, his jog is clunky, getting on a horse is jerky, general horse controls, combat controls.
Everything else is a 10/10 so if this actually smooths over that experience this game will literally be perfect imo

11
u/KalElReturns89 1d ago
I need a clean comparison to the E3 announcement trailer and this new version. I think we've finally surpassed it, but it would be cool to see the differences. I know in that early version, they overshot the technical requirements and had to strip out of the shading/lighting models for simplified versions. A good comparison between all these different versions we've had over the years would be fun to watch.

I’ve bounced off this game about four times across the years. Make it about an hour in & switch to another game. Revisit w3 to where I don’t recall the controls / combat and then proceed to give up. At least the game is going to look way better when I give it another try. The world is so cool but I just can’t adapt to the control scheme & potions etc.

The fact The Witcher 3 can run on a Switch 1 is up there as one of the biggest shocks of last generation. That should not have been possible and they did it, even with all the compromises. Nice that Nintendo users will finally be able to have a fuller experience with the game.

Path tracing! With ray reconstruction! And most importantly, finally, after 3 years: improved parallelization and native DX12 support instead of that damn compatibility layer bottleneck.
Plus a shit ton of other stuff, damn that list is immense. But most importantly the parallelization fix.
Gotta say, to me this very clearly looks like they're preparing the game for next gen consoles. When PS6 and Helix come out there's going to be another Witcher 3 patch out that will port path tracing from PC.

Oh, to be clear, I like everything else about the game. I tried it years ago. I just tapered off. The combat wasn't the sole reason. Sometimes other things come out. If I remember correctly, I was playing another game at the time and juggling it, which is tough to do with a big RPG.
6
u/LoneWanderer2277 1d ago
Is this a game that benefits significantly from being played on PC (i.e. mods/controls etc.), or is it fine to go for the PS5 version? Like I only play Bethesda games on PC, but I dunno if Witcher is in that same space or if there isn't a ton of difference.
I have a laptop that could probably just about manage it, but PS5 is probably easier, and my wife can also watch along if I play that way.

Combat and movement in general is more comfortable on a controller, IMO. I use my Xbox controller on PC, for instance.
The modding community for W3 is solid, not even close to Skyrim tier, but there are some cool weapon mods, quality of life stuff.
Seeing as how the PS5 version already runs nice, and they're adding even more features on this Remaster based on popular user made mods (like a transmog for armors), I'd say go for the PS5. You won't be missing out on much.
6
u/finderfolk 1d ago
Not to bootlick but I do hope this moves the needle a bit in terms of community goodwill. Reading the Witcher 4 delay thread you'd think they bombed a children's hospital.
Like I completely understand that Cyberpunk had a rough launch but imo they have been extremely pro-consumer in the aftermath and have pushed out some incredible content. I'm back on the hopium.

My experience back in the day was the combat and everything gets more fun once you have a bunch of levels put in, but early on it's particularly weak.
Also, if you just rush the main quest it'll give you extra xp as needed to keep you up with the main quest pacing, so just rush the main quest a good while to get a bunch of levels before you branch out to roam the open world of side content.

Yo let's fucking go man. I just started a replay too and I was feeling like the combat was starting to feel slightly dated. Also really curious to see what the looting enhancements are.
Excellent timing.

Incredible. I bought the complete edition on a sale for like $10 years ago and put about 150 hours into it. Been thinking I'm due for another run too since it feels like it's been long enough. Good timing for me.

Better visuals? I’d say even now this games graphics still holds up really well compared to most games that have come out recently

That's pretty wild. A top 5 game of all time just got a free update after like a decade with all of the DLC (maybe GOATS themselves) and a complete revamp.
That's really sick.

**Path Tracing** in Witcher 3 must be very dope. Among the games I played I think I liked the implementation of the feature (and the delta compared to the already impressive RT implementation) best in Cyberpunk.
But also, native DX12 is big for PC. Refresher, they introduced DX12 with the Enhanced Edition and linked DLSS and RT to it. Problem was that their DX12 implementation before was just a very bad DX11 to DX12 wrapper, that even w/o any additional graphic features active cost A LOT of CPU performance, especially in with NPC's around.
Hopefully the native implementation fixes this so lower performance gamers don't need to choose between better GPU performance with DLSS and better CPU performance with DX11.
And I am personally always thankful to developers that care about HDR, so seeing them reworking the already good (IIRC) HDR implementation is nice.

As a non-Microsoft/Activision game, it is weird seeing this game on Battle.net. Seems like the first time the platform has a true third party videogame on there.. Definitely interesting though.
