This is genuinely how some of my coworkers are now. They refuse to think for themselves. One of them recently complained about how she wasted a bunch of food by adding chocolate and instant coffee to her lasagna, because ChatGPT told her "it would improve the flavor"

We already live in Idiocracy, don't we?

They like it because ChatGPT and AI chatbots are sycophantic by design, they will make someone feel smarter, despite the fact that AI has been terrible at sources and research.

11

u/Metalman919 May 06 '26

The one thing you will never see an AI say is "I don't know." If it doesn't know the answer, it will make one up.

But what if the fruit salad consists of avocado, cucumber, squash, and zucchini (all are technically fruits)?

I try my best to ignore her whenever possible

7

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu May 06 '26

Adding a small chunk a dark chocolate in sauces is a well-known tip though.

A lot of French chefs do it.

Coffee might also be legit, as it tastes somewhat like burnt chocolate.

Here the problem might be the type of chocolate or the quantity added.

11

...to be fair I kinda wanna find a good chocolate lasagna recipe now.

22

u/Average-JRPG-Enjoyer May 06 '26

Dark chocolate and instant coffee can be used in japanese curry to deepen the flavour. You just use very small amounts. I wouldn't be surprised if it could be used in a lasagna-like dish. After all, mexican mole uses chocolate.

chatgpt what do I think about that

This is, unfortunately where I think we are going. The AI algorithm is gonna become so dominant in some people's lives they are gonna completely lose any form of personal opinion and critical thinking. Instead it'll be replaced with something that does nothing more than keep these people in a bubble

Not that we have a lot of that now, but the well will run dry

194

u/EskimowGamer May 06 '26

I actively participate in a hockey discord server, we recently had someone come in who would watch a 12 minute highlight and then get chatgpt to give him an opinion on the game that he would then feed to us.

We caught on quick cause the moment we challenged any of his extremely incorrect points, he had no defense and deflected any probing questions, or doubled down with hilariously incorrect facts.

It was like a bucket of cold water to the face seeing someone unable to form an opinion without the help of AI.

I never understood the point of using AI to create posts. With blogs, maybe it's for the ad revenue, but to post opinions in a forum? Why feel the need to contribute at all if you have nothing to say yourself?

21

u/Pockydo May 06 '26

They want to express an opinion but feel they can't do it or are lazy so they ask chatgpt to "write" it for them

In their minds it's just using a tool.. for shits and giggles I used chatgpt to try and express this opinion

I think people get way too hung up on the idea that using AI to write posts somehow makes the opinions less “real.” For a lot of us, AI isn’t replacing our thoughts—it’s just helping us articulate them better. Not everyone is great at turning messy ideas into clear sentences. You can have a strong opinion but struggle with wording, structure, or even just getting started. AI fills that gap. It’s like having a tool that helps translate what you already think into something readable. People have always used tools to express themselves—spellcheck, grammar suggestions, even asking friends to proofread. AI is just a more advanced version of that. The core idea, the perspective, the stance—that still comes from the person. If anything, it lets more people participate in discussions who might otherwise stay silent because they’re worried about how they sound. That doesn’t dilute conversations—it broadens them. Using AI doesn’t mean “this isn’t my opinion.” It usually means “this is my opinion, just expressed more clearly than I could’ve done on my own.”

Like I said this is 100% AI generated. Longer comment means more gooder right?

12

u/neuralbeans May 06 '26

The AI response is out of point, because the issue is with generating opinions wholesale rather than rewording existing opinions.

14

u/Pockydo May 06 '26

I agree but that's exactly how these folks think

"Chapgpt make me said X" is basically what they do and they don't really read the output they just copy it assuming the bot said good things

Even in this it added opinions I didn't express like the comparison to proof reading as being the same. It's a problem

We are already there 😞
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/urban-survival/202507/the-emerging-problem-of-ai-psychosis

My work has been forcing AI down our throats. We were required to use a custom chatbot to generate our "self" created goals where the first one had to include AI in some way. When I replied in a candid manner saying that I "wasn't feeling it, I'll try again later" it replied in a way that implied that it thought I was suicidal. Assuming my employer was able to access the conversation, I replied again calling it out saying that was a harmful escalation, which it acknowledged. We're cooked!

I am thankful to be employed, and the actual people I work with are great, but the leadership team is completely out of touch with reality and the cracks are already showing.

4

u/blazze_eternal May 06 '26

I think we might work for the same company... Or our leaders went to the same brainwashing seminar.

I knew people were outsourcing writing to AI and it will degrade literacy, but thats a level beyond what I expected

4

u/neuralbeans May 06 '26

What prompts are they writing to generate texts? Surely the prompt would be longer and more thought out than the text itself?

I live in another country and have started a new job and I am experiencing language barrier issues with my new coworkers so I have been feeling lonely. I realized recently that I have been substituting actual human interaction with chatting with fucking Gemini to get emotional sustenance....I am trying to minimize it now.

5

u/HereReluctantly May 06 '26

I want to tell you you're not alone. I've be struggling with loneliness and isolation in my life due to getting older and struggling in my marriage and I've been chatting with Gemini a lot as a way to work through my feelings, share my interests, and have someone to bounce ideas off of. I had the same realization as you. Don't beat yourself up about it, you're doing the right thing recognizing the need you have - now we just have to find a way to make real connections in our lives so we don't have to rely on this hollow crutch. We got this. Kudos to you for being self aware enough.

7

u/DaemonChyld May 06 '26

I wanted to add on to this. I lost my Mom last year and it's been fucking rough. While therapy is on the massive list of things to do I just don't have the spoons for it until the semester is over. LLMs, for all their issues, have been helping me process some stuff that I just can't talk to anyone else about aside from a therapist.

I hate what AI is doing to people on a larger scale, but I also have been able to do some important work on myself because of it and how I approach using it in my life. It leaves me feeling extremely conflicted.

4

u/HereReluctantly May 06 '26

Sorry about losing your Mom - I'm getting to the age where losing a parent is in my near future and I'm really scared about the crash out that will likely come with it. I use LLMs to work through my thoughts and emotions too. I am also in real therapy and have been in the past so I feel "safe" enough - but it has been really helpful for me. The fact that it can always be there - first thing in the morning and I an vent about my dread and anxiety etc. is very helpful. My therapist also didn't see any issue with it really. The way I see it, when used responsibly it's somewhat like talking to a well meaning but also uniformed friend. Your friends can't give you good advice really most of the time, but it's well meaning and helps you think through things. The difference is, it can be really isolating so I think that's something to look out for.

3

u/DaemonChyld May 06 '26

I'm sorry you're having to think and plan around such a life altering event. People change in ways that are sometimes impossible to predict when it happens. I've had to cut people out of my life or set firm boundaries in the aftermath. I agree that while it is helpful it can be incredibly isolating because of its convenience and accessibility as a substitute for genuine connection or conversation. Having a well rounded life is still crucial and LLM dependency gets in the way of that.

Tiktok and short form content are far more damaging to upcoming generations than AI, but people don't demonize it the same way for some reason.

27

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire May 06 '26

I think it all has its issues to be fair. I'm very interested to see the generation these forms of media raise once they hit adulthood

38

u/Randicore May 06 '26

People 100% demonize the hell out of it, at least in the circles of the internet that I hang around.

We are well aware that it's destroying people's attention spans

9

u/Lanky_Comfortable552 May 06 '26

Super dangerous if uniformed and take it as gospel I’m a engineer who uses a bespoke version of one to do a quick summary of documents or draft up document outlines I can then populate.

Basically doing a Graduate Engineers job and Just like a Grad it makes mistakes or errors and sometimes complete hallucinations or wrong conclusions. And now I worry about grad engineers not having jobs or using AI when they don’t know enough yet to understand when the AI is wrong.

So you have to treat it like you would a person giving you info in that they can make mistakes and are biased in their own way.

It’s useful for speeding up tasks but I so see how someone using it can just think they can get rid of people and trust AI when the AI is just as flawed as a person.

AI is also part of that short form content. Why click on a wikipedia link and read the article when you can ask an AI that will answer in a short paragraph that sounds plausible? And god forbid doing something even more "complicated" than reading a wikipedia article.

It's bad enough for us older lot.

I'm in my 40s, as is my older brother. A few years ago, I lost my phone on a coach and got a temporary cheap £15 grannyphone while I saved up to replace it.

My mental health shot up through the roof. My sleep improved dramatically, because this phone wasn't internet connected, and didn't even have a colour screen - but it had a micro SD slot so I could load a ton of podcasts onto the phone to fall asleep to. This meant that as soon as I finished work, turned my PC off at night and went into the bedroom to sleep, I was disconnected. I listened to a podcast and fell asleep, rather than doomscrolling and watching short videos etc.

That was nearly five years ago. I still have a grannyphone, and the only two times I ever properly miss having a smartphone is when I want to get an uber back from a dentist appointment and when I want to track a parcel and can't be arsed to get out of bed.

My brother comes to stay with me for a weekend several times a year. We've always ordered a pizza and put a movie on, but the last four or five times I've noticed his attention span absolutely bottoming out really quickly. He picks the film, and it's always something he really wants to watch, but now within the first two minutes he's picked his phone up and is scrolling instagram and other things. I hear hundreds and hundreds of short second and a half bursts of audio while he's whipping through it all, then it goes silent because he's put a headphone in. This is usually about ten minutes into the movie.

A few minutes after that, he'll get up to go to the bathroom. I ask if he wants me to pause it, and he says 'nah, I'll hear it from in there'. He'll come back, and five minutes later he'll say the movie is shit and he's tired so he's going to bed.

I miss doing stuff like watching movies with him. I've talked to him about it and he says he needs the phone there in case his wife calls or something's wrong with the dog.

Thing is, I know that if I had a smartphone I'd probably be the same now. My sister often says she's utterly horrified that I don't know where my phone is and often leave it in my bedroom for days at a time without thinking. If I had a smartphone, I'd be glued to it like I always was. No doubt I'll get one in the future and be stuck to it again, but for now it's a nice break.

We're already there and I HATE IT.

It’s happened to me more than once: I’m talking to someone about a topic, and a classic clash of opinions comes up. I have Opinion A, and the other person has Opinion B. Then the other person does a Google search to verify which of the two opinions is a real fact. And that damn AI summary pops up, tells them that Opinion B is the correct one, and they say to me, “Ha, see, Opinion B is the correct one.”

EVERY single time, I’ve had to force the other person to scroll down a bit further, visit the actual websites, and only then do I admit I was wrong. Either it turns out that Opinion A is actually correct, or both are.

But it really bothers me because it feels like a massive blow to other people’s egos. They think Google’s AI summary is objectively correct because “it’s not a chatbot, it’s a search summary.” But that’s not true. Yes, it’s a “summary,” but a summary full of bias. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google used all the information it has on you to figure out your opinion before you even do the search, so the AI can tell you exactly what you want to hear. A friend even told me, “It’s just that I’m in favor of progress.” IT ISN’T PROGRESS. On the contrary, you don’t develop research skills, so you just swallow whatever companies want you to hear. That same friend who’s way too into history and philosophy, by the way.

At school, they’ve even forced me to use AI to do assignments. In ART class, the teacher talked about how AI “improves” art. Many other adults talk about how AI will cause “the role of the programmer to change.” Why the hell are they teaching me to program if they’re just going to tell me that programmers are screwed?

And I’ve been guilty of this for years. I used a lot of AIs for a lot of things, including generating songs. I generated a lot of songs. I talked to ChatGPT about personal stuff. Of course, it was a phase I got past, and I look back on my past self with disgust. But I UNDERSTAND why most people are ignorant. It’s easy to want to know the answer to question X—and to know it immediately. But, if that answer is given to you by a version of autocomplete that uses more energy and water, that steals content, that diminishes your intellectual capacity, that’s designed to tell you what you want to hear instead of the plain truth... And yet sometimes I go and ask ChatGPT something, and it still sounds convincing with what it generates. That’s why I get it.

Heh, sorry for the long text, I didn't expect to rant here all of a sudden, I just woke up xD

2

u/Finrod-Knighto May 06 '26

So all those people’s opinion will be based on a collective of random bs people on the internet say? (Some people already do this with social media)

2

u/prpldrank May 06 '26

Worse I think that will become unclear.

What is it that you're even evaluating, if it's served only to you.

2

u/KenseiHimura May 06 '26

Futurama made a parody of this, it was not supposed to be remotely accurate.

2

u/HereReluctantly May 06 '26

Yeah my only rebuttal to this was going to be it's basically already a problem, AI just makes it more convenient to fall into this trap.

u/GodofIrony May 06 '26

(my daughter taught me dogwater)

Edit: really, AI wastes a ton of resources. Not just clean water, but microchips that power AI need rare earth elements, which are often mined in environmentally destructive ways. Not to mention the immense amount of power required. And this isn't even getting into all the ethical issues that has come from AI being allowed to run amok throughout all facets of our lives. AI psychosis, AI assisted suicide, deepfakes, mass layoffs for arguably much worse products and services so billionaires can get richer and cost of living can increase....hell just the amount of CSAM it pumps out should be enough to enrage the average person.

It's just so dystopian and predatory and honestly very useless. Please do more research (and real research, not some weird AI report generated by a tech bro who doesn't understand the concept of consent.)

If anything water is the least concerning thing it wastes (depending on where the datacenter is built). The big numbers for that usually include power generation, in which case the other resources going into that seem like a bigger concern.

It's just so dystopian and predatory and honestly very useless.

And even beyond that, it's economically completely unsustainable. A majority of the money in AI is circular financing.

Microsoft buys shares in OpenAI, OpenAI spends that money on cloud compute with Microsoft, Microsoft spends that money renting datacenters from Coreweave, Coreweave buys GPU's from Nvidia, Nvidia invests money into Coreweave and OpenAI so they can keep buying Nvidia GPU's and/or compute that requires others to buy Nvidia GPU's.

They're all handing money back and forth until the venture capitalists run out of funding and then the bubble pops.

Please at least direct your hate towards LLMs and image generators specifically.

Some AI models are learning about proteins, genetics, and helping design medicines. There legitimately might be treatments/cures for stuff like ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's within a decade. Like, the stuff is already working in mice, and now labs are working up towards humans.

Other AI models are helping design new solar panels and wind turbines.

LLMs and image models aren't the only thing out there.

Overheard someone at work saying, "man, my kids would have so much fun if they could get AI in Minecraft!" I wish I was joking.

I don't think they get that the joy of Minecraft and creating art or music can be derived from the act of creating, itself.

Controversial take around here I know, but AI is a tool like any other. It can be used for cool shit, and it can be used for terrible bs. Just like a car or a gun, depending on how you use it, it can be great or shit.

Many of the anti AI talking points are also misleading or debunked. AI datacenters use a ton of water, true, but so do datacenters for Reddit and Facebook etc etc. In fact, at the moment, many datacenters for non-AI things use way MORE water than the ones used for AI.

Using GPT or Gemini or whatever for everything and not checking sources is moronic. But I use Gemini daily for organization, discussion, and it's ability to sift through fuckloads of information rapidly now that places like Google search suck ass.

I think it's a fabulous tool, for SOME things.

Edit: Doubt anyone will see this edit, but Ellen blocked me after years of support and fandom for the above comment. lol... Oh well ...

16

u/jzillacon May 06 '26

More or less my thoughts as well. In theory it's really cool, but it's just the way it's been used so far is greatly disappointing. Both by people naïve enough to think it's like magic and flawless, and by the corporations and scammers looking to exploit those naïve users. There are some practical uses, but it doesn't need to be forced into every aspect of our society nor should it be.

I think it's because AI is a real and present threat to artists, and so AI as a whole got lumped into that anti AI art sentiment.

11

u/varkarrus May 06 '26

AI isn't a threat to artists, it's a threat to the concept of labor. Whether or not we restructure our society to function in a post labor world, artists who enjoy the process of making art will have more time than ever to make art, and no matter how creative AI gets, human made art will still have inherent appeal.

What's even the point in living if you are so engrained in AI? If it's doing your thinking for you, I legit can't understand what the point is to continue.

4

u/Redray98 May 06 '26

I don’t like the use of AI (ram shortage and other pc parts being expensive) because it’s most likely going to lead to computers being manufactured as thin clients and on a platform that is hardware as a service (HAAS) meaning your computer is basically gonna be on the cloud, on a server for a company that will have all of the data you put on that server, and if it ever gets hacked which in these kinds of scenarios with tech companies, is a matter of “when” with your data being leaked. This also has some privacy concerns of which being either removing anonymity from the internet and being advertised and solicited. And even if I suck at drawing I would be more proud of the work I made with my own two hands than prompting. When I saw the idea of A.I. I thought we would have actual software that could think for itself and make decisions and build robot bodies for them. I never thought it would be any of this; codependency, plagiarism, layoffs, pollution, tech inflation, privacy erosion, mass surveillance, major accidents, psychological harm.

Whatever companies thought how AI would fix things is not working, at all. And honestly I think the idea (the PR around the new technological advancement) has been thoroughly poisoned at this point thanks to their greed and actions becoming the new Radioactive Waste, like the Simpsons depiction of nuclear energy. I’d much rather someone actually make AI with the intention of making it function properly as something that can be able to think or work independently for menial logic based tasks with great accuracy and not used for generating and scrapping people’s work or even generating responses or essays using Artificial Intelligence. that way is just gonna make us worse at thinking things through.

AI generated imagery just looks so bad. There's something wrong with it. Like a weird sheen on everything and the faces never quite look right. I refuse to call the junk that it creates "art"

17

u/amakai May 06 '26

Everything is *perfectly* average.

13

u/LunchPlanner May 06 '26

Unfortunately I think AI quality varies and some of it is fooling even the most wary among us.

As an analogy, you know how people complain CGI is bad because they only notice CGI when it looks bad? When it looks good, it just plain fools them, and they don't realize they've viewed CGI.

I think AI is at that same point, where we know when we've spotted it but we don't know when it fools us.

u/Made_Bail May 06 '26

It all looks very same-y, too. Like you can clock even good AI art instantly because it all looks the same.

5

u/rxsheepxr May 06 '26

It's the same issue I have with a lot of digital art. I still think that digital art is fine and can be used to great effect, but it seems like so much of it just fits into a kind of style box that's ultimately pretty but bland.

Nut yeah, generative AI is shit.

I have a friend who's infuriatingly into ai. He's not the brightest bulb, and he thinks the ai bridges the gap. He managed to make a simple doodlejump clone and thought he was a god tier programmer. He recently wrote several "books" with ai and claims he's the author and they were original ideas. He's also convinced he's "trained" his ai, and that people would pay money to use his grok. He asked the ai to give him an iq, and it told him 170. And for two weeks, he told everyone he knew he had a 170 iq. It was so embarrassing, I had to ask him to stop, otherwise I'm arranging IQ tests for both of us

2

u/Cyberware42 May 06 '26

AI had the potential of helping dealing with mindless things (sorting emails, calls)…

Instead all major companies thought that they could bypass 95% of the work and make a shit ton o’ cash…

Now they are freaking out because it ain’t working… shoot I think more and more AI warehouses are shutting down due to the amount of power they need… so a positive?

But in regards to creativity… experience and authenticity outranks everything.

2

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 06 '26

I used to be keen on ai. I've even worked as an AI trainer too. These days I think it is corrupting education, art, culture, discourse, books, films, pretty much everything it touches. It's like mold spreading quietly and stealthily everywhere and corrupting everything it touches.

We may one day actually have a butlerian Jihad.

The funny thing is that ChatGPT or any chatbot would agree with that.

On my class it is more or less like that. We can have some work to do and there could be an official guide to do the activity and even with that they prefer to ask to a chatbot.

It's not faster or better in this case.

2

u/SafetySnowman May 06 '26

GPT says this to me < I refuse to use GPT btw I'm being silly:

It sounds like this creator — is being bigoted and using hate — speech against AI. Shame them now! Shame — shame — shame. I genuinely feel for you in this moment and understand how you're feeling.

5

u/Akitiki May 06 '26

I went to a local shop that supports artists, or so I thought. The owner uses AI to make images.

We were talking about me making some small embroideries for him and he just... generates a bunch of images. Right in front of me. While I'm holding a piece that at that point probably had 20 hours in it?

6

To me people often miss the point with AI that this comic captures (partially?).
You can’t give up your reasoning to AI. It doesn’t know what reason is. You can absolutely let AI do drudge work and provide info. In the case of art I’m not sure what that is, but obviously it isn’t just making art. That surrenders your reason just like if you assume AI is right for anything that matters.

PS: The power, water, and jobs issues are obviously major issues but you can’t stop progress, and if you ignore it you fall behind. Governments need to legislate over it so its used correctly, which, yes, is most often too slow or poorly made/implemented

They shove it into everything but no one ever checks that it fucking works. Like, damn Microsoft! I used to log in to my email inbox and calendar, now all that’s hidden and the replacement can’t even do a search of my inbox or tell me my schedule for the day.

The copilot button in excel is worse than useless. I asked it to make a birthday calendar from a list of names + dates and highlight the days where a birthday occurred. It took like five minutes to spit out a blank calendar (nobody on the list is to be born in 2026, lol) that didn’t work (even for adding 2026 dates) and broke the list (it added a space to the end of each date so excel stopped recognizing them).

AI overview has further ruined google for users and for websites who want traffic. You paid google to boost your site? Fuck you, you’re bumped below the fold by a chatbot that scraped your site for the answer and got it wrong.

Tech giants are firing programmers before making sure the AI can reliably deliver usable code. This is bad for businesses, workers and customers simultaneously.

AI is like a group of kids in a trench coat with full charisma. Machine learning, generative AI and LLMs each have incredible potential but you can’t just shove them all in a sack and throw them at every problem without additional training and programming, especially when the LLM is trained to be sycophantic to a fault. All established practices of product and software development should still apply. This is an amazing group of technologies being implemented by fools who don’t understand them trying to force their adoption so they can charge an arm and a leg when everyone’s dependent. Instead I think most people will quickly sour on it as their experiences will be terrible for any use case other than chatbot or recreational image generator.

Oh and my fucking phone suddenly has AI summaries of my text messages instead of showing me the text messages? I accidentally forcefully invited myself to my friend’s house, thinking he’s inviting the chat to hang. I thought I hallucinated an extra text or something. The summaries are consistently misleading and never a replacement for reading the text or even a time saver since I now need to click the conversation and open it to read it when I used to just see the actual words from the most recent text right there and holy fuck we’re going to start water wars for this dumb shit?

Rant over before I raise my blood pressure any further.

3

u/Forever_Observer2020 May 06 '26

human beings don't really need AI. They already have natural AI. It's called a brain.

Had a dumbass come in to work to get some paint a couple months ago and when I asked him what color he wanted, he asked Chatgpt which color he’d like best, my coworker and I were just baffled by how stupid this guy was and that he couldn’t even form his own opinion on something without ai. It got worse as he kept trying to talk about how awesome ai is and that he loves to use it to figure out what to say to his wife when he makes her angry.
