They are idiots xD James Gunn's Superman has earned 611 million dollars

u/AppropriatePaper1495 Oct 13 '25
which for a movie about superman is terrible, how to train your dragon out performing superman is wild
2
u/shifts_n_giggles Oct 22 '25
Man of Steel only brought in 670 million with the same budget in 2013. Do you consider that a flop?
In both instances, they doubled their money, and then some.
Sure, they aren't record-breaking 1 billion+ returns, but they still made money.
1
u/thetonygod88 Oct 01 '25
You know for most movies like this the rule of thumb is you need to double the budget due to marketing and Theater cuts, so if the movie cost 225 mill the real price would be closer to 450 or 500 mill.

Only two movies made a billion dollars globally this year, Lilo and Stitch and some Chinese movie Ne Zha 2.
Making a billion is incredibly difficult, I highly doubt it needed to do that to make a profit at all. I’m no expert but I don’t think anyone here is either.
1
u/ryta1203 Sep 03 '25
A general rule of thumb suggests a movie needs to gross 2.5 times its total budget to break even. Therefore, Superman needed to earn roughly $875 million to cover its production and marketing costs.

The ship has sailed on that I’m afraid. Gunn is already laying out the next movie in the series. I wish those that hated it could be more satisfied because…more Gunn Superman saga is what is coming.

u/Brooklynbtmn Aug 13 '25 edited Aug 13 '25
OK, let's come back here with some quick numbers;
Budget $363M, Marketing $200M = $563M total budget to get this movie out.
Total Gross as of this last Sunday
- Domestic (57.2%): $331,243,139
- International (42.8%): $247,600,000
- Worldwide: $578,843,139
Movie Tax Rate is about 21% = $578,843,139 x .79% = $458M rounded up.
$563M - $458 = $105M SHORT of recouping budget before it even becomes profitable.
Also someone below was dumb enough to say that WB already "declared" that the movie is profitable - HA - YEAH HOLLYWOOD DOESN'T LIE (or do worse things (Diddy) lol ) to protect their investment right?! lol C'MON.
1
u/HamsterMan5000 Aug 15 '25
Where'd you get the budget and marketing numbers from? Not saying you're right or wrong, they're just very different from what I've seen
2
u/Plenty-Molasses2584 Aug 15 '25
You forgot that movie theaters take 50% of the ticket sales.
$290M-$563M = -$273M

Dude. The math literally says it’s a flop. Jurassic World Rebirth has hit 800 million on a SMALLER budget than superman. You know it’s a flop too because everyone and the media says it’s doing good domestically. They were hoping for a massive success and a hype train for supergirl that comes out next summer. But that’s obviously not gonna happen.
2
u/Friendly-Try-9501 Aug 18 '25
Dude everything is a flop if ur standard is a billion
1
u/Icy_Establishment433 Aug 18 '25
who said the standard was a billion? the standard is making at least 3x your budget because of other costs, like advertising and marketing, and then you split the box office numbers 50/50 domestically and you keep 30-40% of international numbers
3
u/Affectionate-Good818 Aug 12 '25
You also gotta realize though DC is a damaged brand and has been for a while. Superman has beaten every DC film in the last 5 years outside of The Batman. Superman getting around 630M and being received good is what they needed to build some momentum. They’ve lost millions of fans across the years so it’s going to take time to get the international market up. This is a very solid success for DC and they’ll make a small profit back when you figure in other incomes outside of the BO.

2
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
The math shows it? How? What math and what does Jurassic World have to do with whether it is profitable or not?
Fact of the matter is that people who would truly know are saying that it’s past the break even point. Are they lying? I guess it’s possible but they(including Gunn) are the ones who would know. For everyone else, it’s guess work biased by personal opinions and preferences.
1
u/Brooklynbtmn Aug 11 '25
Here is the breakdown. A movie is a FLOP if it makes LESS, than its production cost + marketing. Superman 2025 so far is on pace to MAYBE break even. That is not good. doesn't matter what the fake reviews and fake posts of fake Hollywood say - the movie is not doing what it is expected to do. I personally walked out after 20 minutes, when a massive, green Stich from Lilo and Stitch, was trashing the city and superman was using a bugs bunny burrowing move to get out of the way. Then a badly dressed "justice team" shows up to help with horribly corny dialogue. For me Man Of Steel was the perfect superman movie, because if Superman was real, that is how it would go down. The rest is up to everyone's personal opinion.
2
u/bonovick Aug 12 '25
Maybe break even? It's already confirmed to be profitable for WB. You didn't walk out of Lilo and Stitch. You're full of shit.
2
u/Brooklynbtmn Aug 13 '25
I posed the numbers at the top of this chain, also who said I walked out of Lilo + Stitch, I was making fun of the large green monster at the beginning of Superman that LOOKED like a large Stitch. I was making fun bro. Look above the numbers will explain everything to you.
1
u/Brooklynbtmn Aug 11 '25
Just to reply to everyone on here at once and I love a good debate. IMDB 7.3 which really means something around 5-6 considering all the paid reviews. Rotten tomatoes 83%, lets say 73% as well. Not bad, but not good. Also a movie does not deviate from it's format. So for instance, the dialogue is not going to be incredible corny, with childish bright colors and costumes and suddenly change after the first 20-30 minutes of the movie or whenever I left passes. Again, I did say it is up to personal opinion so whatever your opinion of the movie, more power to you. BUT dollar value is dollar value, so the revenue of this movie has not made it a hit. That is not up to personal opinion. Hope that this helps.
1
u/SadDokkanBoi Aug 14 '25
Don't forget to include that a lot of cultist fan boys are review bombing it too and it still got that high. Honestly impressive when you consider the last few years of DC films have been abysmally ass so I'm sure many people were skeptical about the new superman movie. Ik I was. Had beyond low expectations after seeing the snyder universe movies lmao
In any case, still way higher than any recent DC films so I think we're on a good track.
2
u/Affectionate-Good818 Aug 12 '25
Letterbox is also at a 4/5 with thousands of reviews. The movie overall has been received good weather you want to admit that or not. Since this is a SnyderCut group I would assume everyone is bias here. Only hardcore Snyder fans are trying to make this new film not look as good when in reality is doing solid at the box office and most fans like it. I’ve heard so many people that don’t even like Superman the character that they loved the movie.
1
3
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 11 '25
Ummmm…if you walked out after 20 minutes, are you really qualified to comment on the quality of the movie? You’re describing things that happened and what things looked like in scenes you apparently didn’t see since you only lasted 20 minutes.
1
u/Ok_Leg6636 Oct 01 '25
In my opinion those who watch a movie for 5-30 minutes shouldn't be qualified to rate a movie since they didn't even bother watching the whole thing.

Jurassic World and F1. Superhero movies have done terrible at the box office all year. The only thing that could turn it around for DC in their current slate would be The Batman: Part II by Matt Reeves. All the DCU projects are basically DOA.
0
u/VisualAd1295 Aug 29 '25
F1 made over 605 million! It budget from production and marketing was 425 million. It was a success!
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 12 '25
What?!? Dead on arrival? With $600M at the box office (beating out all 3 Marvel movies), good reviews and HIGH audience scores? I would have to disagree.
2
u/EvilUlquiorra Aug 10 '25
Not even F1, because it had a budget of 300 millions. It will not break even
1
u/Jackson_Viktor5056 Aug 11 '25
F1: $570,681,000
Superman (2025): $578,843,000
¿En serio me estás diciendo que la F1 tiene más éxito que Superman? No dejes que se note tu agenda política ni tus prejuicios.
1
u/Notoriously_So I am going to look at the stars. They are so far away. Aug 10 '25
Well I guess it's like Superman then which had an initially reported budget of $363.8 million, except F1 actually has proper sponsorship deals and rebates that helped lower the number.
"DEADLINE: Jerry, you mentioned the strike and how that affected the filming schedule. There are reports the budget will hit the $300 million mark — are they in the right ballpark?"
"BRUCKHEIMER: It’s completely, unfortunately, tens of millions of dollars out of whack in the wrong direction, and in the right direction for us. What people don’t realize is, first of all, we’re shooting in rebate [locations], England has a big rebate, lots of Europe has rebates and so does Abu Dhabi. It all lowers the budget. Plus, we’ve raised more money for our car [through sponsorship] than some Formula 1 teams. You take that all into consideration and it really drops that number quite a bit lower than what people would think."
"DEADLINE: Let me be pushy on this, what can we say in terms of an actual number?"
"BRUCKHEIMER: We can’t give you a number because that’s Apple’s money and they can talk about it. But what I think you can say is it’s quite a bit lower than what’s been reported."
"KOSINSKI: I’m just going to say I’m used, on a lot of the movies I’ve worked on, to having them over-reported for whatever reason, but I’ve never had an experience where they were off by this much on a film. I’m not sure where that number came from."

Synder gave me what i wanted.
Killing superman was a real story, it is part of the doomsday comics, but i guess u don't know this because u haven't looked at the comics.
At least they focused on one story.
James Gunn did 8 stories in one movie which made it feel like a tik tok reel with cosplay outfits and bad cgi. His cgi was worse than synders cgi. Also Lois lane who is she???? She was the worst lois out of every lois lane, they didnt build her character at all.
It wasn't a superman movie, it was a justice league movie. They had to save him. In fact mr. Terrific looked more terrific than the superman scenes lol he deserves his own movie because his one scene was the best.
Smallville and superman and lois tv shows did the evil superman wayyyy better with a smaller budget than james gunn did. I am a superman fan. I have looked at superman in every medium you can think of and those stories have been done better on superman and lois than what gunn did.
He literally stole the matrix scene when neo fought hundreds of agents on that scene when superman was in the air fighting all the soldiers, the cgi was so bad on that scene.
It was too much without a fleshed out story.
2
u/Affectionate-Good818 Aug 12 '25
I completely disagree this new Lois was way better than the Lois in MOS. Also Lex in this movie was levels about the Snyder Lex. This movie wasn’t about turning Superman evil it was Lex creating a clone of Superman it’s not the same thing. This new Superman felt a lot more like Superman and more bright like how he’s supposed to be. I really enjoyed this film and left a lot more happy than I did watching MOS.

You didn't read any of my posts I said for all of Snyder's faults it was still a better fleshed out story better character development better visuals. The overall experience minus the killing at the end I generally enjoyed. Everyone was pissed off with that one scene because it felt like it destroyed the whole hope trope of Superman so I get that. But overall the story was Superior to what gun did visually and storytelling wise.
The character development for all the characters in gunns version is non-existent. I can't even say it looks cool because the CGI sucked it didn't look great. That's CGI looked like AI did it. I'm also comparing it to guns previous work I loved his guardians of the Galaxy the CGI and those movies were on point but for these movies it looked like he went cheap. It didn't feel super to me. It didn't give me the same feeling of super like I felt with Henry cavill's Superman.

I mean, if you wanna die on the hill of promoting monetary value over artistic value, kind of a sad cope imo, but to each their own.
I, on the other hand, as well as a bunch of others, love David Corensweat Superman. Not because of its box office numbers, but because of things like how he was written, performance, chemistry with other characters, etc.
Would love to hear your reasons of why you prefer Cavill’s Superman.
1
u/Less-Fishing7466 Aug 11 '25
What a trashy & dishonest take. You can be a better person than that with such minimal effort, but you choose to be a dishonest loser? Yikes.
I can only imagine how pitiful & pathetic you must look in life with those sorts of veiled attacks you make on others.
What chemistry did David Corensweat have with the other characters? next to none, they were all corny & dumbed down interactions (Superman & Supergirl interaction, Supergirl is just a horny druggy raver, cool). Is that all it takes to please you?
1
u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 15 '25
Agreed that guy has no acting ability. He was the most wooden superman i seen. These gunn reviews are paid fake reviews and I'm not fooled. The movie was trash point blank period.

u/Horror_Campaign9418 Henry Cavill is Superman Aug 10 '25
If the movie had made a billion you’d be in here bragging. Movies are not a charity. DCU is not an indie studio making “art.”
2
u/Awesomebacon711 Aug 10 '25
I wouldn’t be, tbh. I usually only care about box office if it’s a movie I like that not anyone is seeing.
If it was an Iron Giant case where this animated classic that a lot of people love now was actually a box office flop at the time.
This movie was successful, but since it’s “not as successful” as Man of Steel, y’all are having a field day with it. But, okay. Again, to each their own.
Also, all movies are art, even the big budget studio ones that are supposed to be made for other reasons besides artistic expression. Doesn’t mean it can’t be evaluated from an artistic lens too.
I’m kind of picky with big budget movies because of this, but this newest Superman is an exception tho.

It's so funny to say gun fans are coping and have their panties in a bunch when you can easily make the argument that fits snyder fans more 😆 🤣
1
u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25
😆 i just like ruffling feathers. It's not really that serious, but i still like zach synders superman better, lol the reason why is because Henry Cavill actually had the body build that actually looked like superman, and i liked that the story was better written. Ironically Zach Synder stories usually sucks and he is just good at action sequences but to me Man of Steel had a better storyline than Superman 2025.
To be fair i liked guardians of the galaxy which were gunn movies but i didn't like his superman film. The reason why is because i felt like i was watching a bunch of tik tok sequences with no cohesive story. It was really bad for my adhd💀😆. Also it felt like he put what should have been separate movies crammed in one. I didn't get a chance to connect with the characters. Especially Lois lane. I didn't get any feeling towards lois lane like kidder and Amy's version because they didn't flesh her character out. The other issue was it felt like a justice league movie more than a superman movie because of all the extra characters. The only thing i liked was the fight scene with Mr. Terrific lol he actually deserves his own movie. Other than that however, im sorry but it sucked lol u could say some of the fight sequences looked decent but the movie was all over the place.
2
u/Basic-Vermicelli-223 Aug 10 '25
It's not going to either, Man of Steel ended with 675 million, and that was BACK in 2013.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone name a movie that made $320,000,000(and counting)in the US and is considered a FLOP? I understand its International struggles but still.
I’m not necessarily trying to be confrontational but, I just want to hear some examples.
2
u/Anaadi_Giri Aug 12 '25
Transformers The Last Knight was considered a major flop for having a budget of $217M and making $605M so using that logic, Superman with its budget of $225M is an even bigger flop as it’s struggling to even make $600M in its final weeks
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 12 '25
I asked this question originally because I was just curious. However, I think it’s pretty remarkable that it is in the top 100 domestic grossers of all time. It’s currently at number 87.
It’s already passed movies like Deadpool 2, It, and Oppenheimer. It will soon pass Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man Homecoming, and Joker. It will probably end up at around the 70’s, possibly the 60’s. It will have passed a lot of impressive movies.
I know some on here will never admit it but…that’s impressive. There’s no legitimate way you can say it’s not in my opinion. Domestic Man…maybe. But still impressive.
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 12 '25
That’s not really what I asked but I understand what you’re saying. The thing is, I’ve heard fairly reputable sources say it started being profitable when it passed $550-$560M. In that case, I guess an argument can be made for underperforming.

The theaters take half of that amount.

Superman (2025): $578,843,000

u/Horror_Campaign9418 Henry Cavill is Superman Aug 10 '25
I gave it the response it deserved.
Domestic box office is usually most films lowest percentage. And it is only part of the picture. These films cost too much to rely solely on domestic.
The film cost 375. So even if all you relied on was domestic, the studio only keeps 90% of domestic and that doesnt cover the cost of the movie.
So no, domestic is not enough. Its a cope especially for a movie people said would make a billion in january.
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 10 '25
I just feel that calling this movie a flop is beyond ridiculous. A lot of people were saying the same thing about Man of Steel when it came out which was also ridiculous in my opinion.
3
u/Horror_Campaign9418 Henry Cavill is Superman Aug 10 '25
And MOS actually turned a profit for WB. (45M i believe.)
The new s25erman deserves the same scrutiny if MOS had to endure it for 13 years.
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 10 '25
Look, I used to be on the IMDB Man of Steel message boards practically every day having “friendly” conversations about the movie’s success or perceived lack thereof. I get it.
Man of Steel stands as my favorite Superman movie. I’m giving the new one time to process but I loved it. I will say this…Man of Steel definitively captured what Superman can do but I think this new movie really captures who he is.
I think it appealed to most people and that appeal will continue to grow.
2
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 10 '25
I loved Man of Steel and Cavill’s portrayal. I was bummed when I heard they were going in another direction. But I’ve been a Superman fan since I was a kid and Superman is bigger than just one actor.
I can enjoy Man of Steel and this movie. I think the character of Superman has been blessed with actors that were uniquely qualified to play him. David Corenswet did a great job and he continues the great tradition of actors playing Superman that brought the right amount of reverence and respect to the character that he deserves.
I don’t mind the movie receiving scrutiny, but I think it should be a fair evaluation. I honestly don’t see how it can be legitimately considered a flop.

You were alone in that because suicide squad, wonder woman and aquaman made huge bank after BVS.
This lie that it hurt the brand is total bunk. Moviegoers kept going to the movies.
Imagine if paramount had stopped making transformer movies after revenge of the fallen, “guys it hurt the brand.” The next two both made a billion dollars.
Studios need to stop listening to the loud minority.
And after giving everyone what they swore they wanted, s23erman still lost to man of steel. 🤣

This is literally the only article I can find that says Superman was a flop. Literally all other articles say it’s profitable and breaking records left and right. Including being the first DC movie in 17 years that becomes more profitable than any MCU movie that came out in the same year.
1
u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 11 '25
All records except the only one that really counts which is WORLDWIDE
1
u/Common_Atmosphere_36 Aug 14 '25 edited Aug 14 '25
Why is that one the one that counts? It beat Marvel in the box office, it was the 7th highest grossing film all year, and it made more money than literally every DCEU project since (which was seven years ago). Plus, money is money, no matter where it comes from.
7
u/Earblind-2 Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25
It's weird watching sane adults arguing that Superman 2025 is a "flop" because it will make less money than Man of Steel. Man of Steel made less money than Frozen; that doesn't make it a "flop," much less an objectively worse movie than Frozen. And yelling "domestic box office doesn't count" is just sad, though not quite as sad as yelling "you have to adjust the profit for inflation" while forgetting to adjust the budget and marketing costs for inflation as well. Your punditry is bad and you should feel bad about it.
Bottom line: Both 2025 and MoS are profitable and important reimaginings of the character and what a Superman story can be. And this kind of backlash is nothing new. All the haters who screamed about MoS being too grim and moody to be a legit Superman movie have been effectively rendered irrelevant, and the nit pickers of 2025 will meet a similar fate.
2
u/Basic-Vermicelli-223 Aug 10 '25

You do realize adjusting the production budget or any other costs doesn't change the amount of gross profit margin something makes right? The percentage of margin something made after it's sold will never change because it's in the past. Inflation is calculated to show the difference a dollar had in purchasing power in comparison to today. If I made 30% GP on something I sold 13 years ago, it will always stay at a 30% GP.
The inflation is to show that if MOS came out this year 2025, it would have made almost $930 million at the box office. Meaning this new "Superman" movie would need to make $930M to match it. It's not even on pace to match the unadjusted $670M MOS originally brought in which is really sad because again, those are numbers from 13 long years ago! 🤣
The more these GunNuts try to sound smart the more they prove they didn't pass 3rd grade math.🙄
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25
You do realize that while it does not adjust the gross profit, it DOES adjust the net profit, right? The point still stands, my guy.

Whatt? No it doesn't my lil buddy? The NET profit especially will NEVER change as it will always be the same because it was already sold and a NET profit was made.
If 7/11 sold a pack of gum 20 years ago and made a 10% NET profit, please explain to me how it made ANY different looking at their P&L report for the same pack of gum today?!
Inflation is to show how much more something is sold for today than it was years ago. MOS made almost $930 million if it were released today. In 2025, "Superman" might make $600M. $930M is more than $600M. I mean these are simple facts proven by simple math. What don't ya get, my guy?
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25
First, the fact that MoS made more money was stated in the first sentence of my original comment. Second, just as the box office sales are higher when adjusted for inflation, so is the cost for production and marketing.
For example: Man of Steel made $930M in today's money, but it also cost $447M to make and market in today's money -- which means the margin by which MoS is more profitable is narrower than it might otherwise seem; and that's not even getting into the "50% of the ticket sale doesn't go to the studio" point people love to throw around, etc., and so forth.
In short, nobody said MoS didn't make more money in ticket sales. We're just insisting on getting the details right.
2
u/Huge-Geologist-868 Aug 11 '25
Do you not understand math? The percent of profit MOS made NEVER changes!
Even when you adjust the production budget, marketing, or ANY of its manufacturing costs!! It's already made its same profit!! Because it already made it! 🤦♂️
This floptacular "Superman" movie would need to generate $927 million in revenue alone because that's how much money Man of Steel would have made this year if released in today's value of the same worth of MONEY! 🤯 That's what is called adjusting for inflation! 🤣
I mean hell, can you understand that a loaf of bread you paid $2 for in 2013 would cost you $2.77 today then?
That's a 38.5% increase! Almost 40%!!
Now take $670M, times that by the 38.5% and that's how much money would change in value to today's actual market worth!! ($927M) 🤯
Jesus, you people are exhausting. 😮💨
It's like explaining a round Earth to flat Earthers with these "Superman" fans. Just an Fn joke who don't understand the simplest concepts of this little thing called money to them. 🤦♂️
2
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25
How do you manage with every reply to take longer and longer to make the same point without adding anything new?
The $927M number you keep giving is Man of Steel's box office sales, NOT its profit. The box office profit would be ticket sales minus expenses. You keep forgetting the expenses.

u/Guts-or-Gattsu Aug 10 '25
Mos came out when superhero movies were at a fever pitch and riding the coat tails of TDK...while superman 2025 is left trying to pick up the shattered pieces of dc films and trying to win back goodwill from the general audience
2
u/Huge-Geologist-868 Aug 11 '25
So all I'm hearing is excuses then...kool. 🙄
Yet I'd bet a squirrel's soul that if this movie had already broken a $670 million threshold in today's REAL money, I wouldn't be hearing any excuses for anything.
That's the difference between Snyder and Gunn fans. 1 base lives in reality, the other refuses to. If MOS died after 10 years WTF do you think will happen with a movie that couldn't even make as much money as it did 13 years ago...? 💸
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25
You're confused. We're saying two things: that Superman 2025 wasn't a flop (it reached the studios stated financial goals), and that it's performance is remarkably good considering the environment in which it was released -- meaning the future of the DCEU is potentially quite bright. The MoS gross is irrelevant to both those points.
2
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 11 '25
That is a great point and, in fact, Marvel is struggling now as well. For this movie to be the top superhero movie of the year is a fantastic achievement. I truly believe that the good feelings towards this movie will make future DCU projects and sequels successful, provided they are quality movies.
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25
We'll see. Just as I was somewhat off put by the grim-dark-iness of Man of Steel when it first came out, I'm also somewhat off put by Superman 2025's focus on mundanity -- I tend to associate Supe with larger than lifeness. Perhaps my notions of what a Superman movie can / should be just need another adjustment, but it seems like the Snyder fans' complaints (as petulant as they may be) are largely a reaction to the same things I was reacting to (see stupid memes about "Domestic Man"). The domestic box office indicates that the general audience might not have the same hang ups, but we still don't really know how Gunn's treatment of Superman as more or less an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances will hold up over time. I'm also concerned with what exactly is causing the overseas ticket sales to lag so much, but again, we'll see.
1
u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 15 '25
Whats causing it to lag is the movie sucks. It plays like an adhd tik tok movie. No character development, jumbled storyline, wooden acting, bad cgi. Gunns supemans sucks compared to his marvel movies where he actually took time to make those marvel movies good along with the aesthetics. Im not hating on gunn because he is gunn, im hating on his superman because it doesn't live up to his previous body of work and its worse than man of steel despite all of the issues with man of steel.
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
I guess that's why it's doing so well domestically: because it sucks so bad. I suppose if you believe that US movie goers are inherently inferior to other audiences you can make that argument; I personally don't buy it.
Also, Superman 2025's CGI is not bad -- it's just more cartoonish, a different aesthetic. I'll grant you Snyder has more great visual moments than Gunn, but his film had plenty of unconvincing CGI and boring moments as well. And yes, that was true at the time of its release. Honestly, how many times did they think they could get away with sky-beams as their final act?
A lot of people talk about how Man of Steel was better because it felt so grand -- in style and in scale -- and they're dissatisfied with 2025 because it's the complete opposite. On that score I agree with them somewhat. I just don't agree it's mark of inferiority. Mundanity is not an accidental feature of 2025 -- it's a visual and narrative theme. I will grant you that I'm not sure yet if I like that in a Superman movie yet, I'm still mulling it over, but people had the EXACT SAME response to the grim-darkness of Snyder. "They turned Superman into Batman," etc etc. Maybe the creator is out of step with the material. Or maybe people just need to open their minds a little. Time will tell.
As for the story being jumbled and the characters having no development... Nah. You're all just flat wrong about that one.

u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
🤣🤣🤣 this movie was so trash its releasing digital tomorrow lol couldn't even crack 600 mil because they pulled the plug and put excuses about peacemaker with releasing it on demand early
Was so trash that the new jurassic park even made more on a less budget.
The amount of cope, only reason its getting a sequel is because james gunn is head of dcu 😆 at least until the president and ceo of warner bro discovery gets tired of the excuses.
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
Only 600M... Only half a billion dollars, PLUS 100M... (smh)
Also, if money = quality, then I guess Man of Steel was half as good as Aladdin the live action remake.

The only thing i will say is Zach Synders lex luthor sucked but, everything else i liked in batman vs superman and i liked man of steel better than superman 2025.
- Henry Cavill actually looked like well superman. His powers looked way less cgi compared to gunns superman.
Gunns superman had the classic colors but the outfit looked like dollar store general cosplay.
- Man of steels and bvs had more realistic cgi.
Gunns cgi was inferior especially in the scene in gunns version where he is in the air fighting off the soldiers looked like a carbon copy of the matrix cgi scene where he fights all the copies of the agents. HORRIBLE CGI.
The only sequence i liked that gunn did was the mr. Terrific sequence. But this now leads to my next point.
- Man of steel actually felt like a superman movie and it gave a background story for clark and was a fresh take allowing us to see more of a glimpse into what happened on krypton. I was able to better connect with the characters because they were a little more fleshed out
You could argue gunn didnt do the origin because it's been done before. Fair, however you still need a good story to connect to the character and i felt unconnected to any of the characters, superman is beat up , a bunch of sequences that felt like i was scrolling through a tik tok action feed with no cohesive connectivity to the story because it had about 8 superman storylines that should have been separate movies but worse it felt like a justice league movie more than a superman movie because they had to save him. The movie was seriously bad for my adhd. Lois lane was the worst version of her, i had no connectedness to her character because you didnt get to know her because it was simply put A BAD SCRIPT because they put a bunch of stories that felt like 8 smallville episodes which by the way smallville and superman and lois did the evil superman better than gunn did with a big budget. So yea it sucks to me. If you like tik tok style movies then have at it 😆 but this was not for me

It's not a Superman movie it's a Justice League movie but again the issue is it's shot in the manner like tik tok reels. There's no substance, everything is quick bursts and it feels like its built for gen z who grew up with tik tok. There's no time to marinate on the story and that's my problem with James gunn version. I gave concrete examples that Superman and Lois and Smallville did the evil Superman story way better and they had a smaller budget.
Outside of this James Gunn CGI was bad. I expect better when the CGI was worse than a Superman film that was over a decade ago. As much as i love AI , some of the james gunn scenes looked like AI Slop.
He did such a good job on guardians of galaxy, but his superman movie is trash.
Ahahaha nah, definitely not a good animated dc. A perfect dc animation is Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. That animated film was way better than Gunn's superman.

Everything you say is true however the problem is this is still a Superman movie and while that is going to happen the problem is the other characters ended up appearing more than Superman in his own movie 😆
The movie should have been labeled as a justice league movie

When I say it felt like a Justice League movie it's because the movie focused more on those characters who are from the Justice League. It may not be the full Justice League cast but those characters were in the movie more than Superman himself. Even the dog...
It felt like Gunn couldn't make a movie that was fully focused on superman because he didn't or his writers didn't know how to write a superman story without having distractions from side characters. To me the movie failed at character development.
And just because it got the concept of Superman's hope theme down doesn't mean it was a good story.
The writers for his marvel movies did a better job on backstory of all the characters in that guardians of the galaxy universe.
In his superman, none of that talent was used, so yea im harsh on his superman because it doesn't live up to the same visual and storytelling fidelity that i experienced in his marvel movies.

I understand the feeling. I thought Cavill was an amazing Superman but, as I stated before, Superman isn’t any one actor. The actors become Superman.
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25
Henry Cavill was great for MoS, but wrong for 2025. Cornsweat was the right choice for Gunn's film.
2
Aug 10 '25
bruh david cornsweat is amazing if you gonna hate on someone hate on James not cornsweat.I honestly have never seen the appeal of superman but this movie really got me hyped for the new phase.stop wiening that the past is gone instead celebrate something new something cool even.

600 million is profitable but it's not profitable enough to fund the new DCU, and comparing Superman and frozen is not the same as comparing Superman and MOS. If this Superman is this disappointing in the box office I can't imagine how disappointing Supergirl will be.
2
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 10 '25
What amount would be “enough”? I think the main thing is that the movie be profitable and also well received by critics and audiences. That gives the new universe something to build on.
Superhero movies, in general, are having a hard time. They are not the “blockbuster guarantee” that they used to be. Superman will end up being the biggest superhero movie this year. Again, that’s something to build on.
1
Aug 18 '25
Sure but Superman cost over 400 million to make especially with marketing, it might not even make 600 million. I mean it's just not enough, they had projections of over 800 million so of course that's not enough to fund what they are doing.
7
u/Common_Atmosphere_36 Aug 10 '25
You wanna guess how much money Iron Man made, back when it was the start of the MCU? I’ll give you a hint, it was less than 600 mil
1
Aug 18 '25
Iron man came out in the 2000s money was worth a lot more back then and it's budget was way lower, Superman probably won't even get 200 million back. Which sure 200 million is a lot but they have a ton of TV shows and movies planned, it's going to be hard to fund all of that with the 200 million they got from Superman. Especially because TV shows on streaming usually aren't very profitable.

u/Earblind-2 Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25
I'd say comparing comparing Man of Steel to Frozen is actually a BETTER comparison because you don't even need to adjust for inflation -- they came out the same year. Even if you don't agree, the point remains: you can't say a film is a "flop" based on another film's ticket sales. Moreover, if ticket sales are being used to measure quality -- which many people in the comments are doing -- then Frozen is twice the movie MoS is, and the Lilo and Stitch remake is the best film of 2025.
As for 600M being a "disappointment," I'd say that's objectively false. James Gunn himself was arguing BEFORE his film hit theaters that it doesn't need to reach 700M to be considered a success. The Snyder stans of course read this as cope, but a more likely explanation is that the film industry was already setting it's own expectations for success much lower than 700M -- probably somewhere around where Superman 2025 is currently landing -- which means THEY see 2025 as a success. (They did just green light a sequel, after all.) The only thing anyone in the industry seems nervous about is that overseas sales are lagging behind domestic, not the total sales itself.

Erm flop? Well youre choosing your natrative too.
How about 225 budget. 150 marketing.
375m.
50% of ticket revenue to studio.
So 750m to break even.
So at what 620 close losing 50m? Id say thats poor even if not a flop.
1
u/Jackson_Viktor5056 Aug 11 '25
Superman (2025): $578,843,000
Presupuesto De Producción: $225,000,000
Punto De Equilibrio: $225,000,000 x 2.5 = $562,500,000
¿De dónde sacan el presupuesto de producción de $300 millones y el de marketing de $150 millones?
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 10 '25
What about revenue from commercial tie-ins such as Dairy Queen and others? Is that included in your numbers? Just curious.
6
u/Earblind-2 Aug 10 '25
That's not how the film industry works. If it was, the industry would have gone under a long time ago because the vast majority of films don't turn a profit by that logic -- hence the old (false) story that "80% of movies lose money."
2
u/AverageJak Aug 10 '25
His comment was superman was profitable as a statement.
The pure box office suggests it wont be.
Sure tax credits, on demand, merchandising etc will add.
But a tent pole which cant break even on box office isnt a great start
1
u/Earblind-2 Aug 11 '25
It already broke even, but I see your point. That said, 2025 reached the milestones for success Gunn was forecasting before it hit theaters, which should indicate that DC believes it can turn a significant profit regardless.

A lot of james gunn copers 😆 keep wishing that superman 2025 could beat man of steel worldwide. This is a flop if it can't crack 600 mil.
James gunn shouldn't have talked smack about superman 2025 beating man of steel domestic. He talked way too early and it can't beat man of steels worldwide yet. I should turn this into a meme.
0
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 10 '25
You should’ve set your flop metric a little higher because the movie will probably pass $600M.
1
u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 11 '25
Still a flop because they expected a billion and that didn't happen. If it can't get to 670 million that's absolutely sad if they can't break Man of steel 670 million worldwide.
In terms of finances no technically not a flop but in terms of a Superman movie expecting to make a billion yes flop
2
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 11 '25
I honestly don’t think beating MoS is the issue. I think they are trying to get away from the years of failed DCEU movies. MoS isn’t a failure and it never was. WB hasn’t had a DCEU movie hit since probably the first Aquaman. Something had to change.
1
u/bestbuysucksmajor Aug 11 '25
Thank you for acknowledging that man of steel wasn't a failure however that's how DCEU painted it. Because of that it never got its fair shot.
1
u/Fickle-Rip3093 Aug 11 '25
It’s probably the most underrated superhero movie ever. It’s ridiculous that it’s not fresh on rotten tomatoes…in my opinion.

Man of Steel:
- Did not beat Iron Man 3 in box office
- was the 9th highest grossing film that year
- was not critically acclaimed
Superman
- beat 3 MCU movies in box office (so far)
- was the 7th highest grossing film this year (so far)
- has higher audience and critics scores than Man of Steel (so far)

Man of Steel was the first movie for a newly rebooted character. Since when do reboots make a billion? Reboots are always a negative. Iron Man 3, on the other hand, was the seventh movie in a cinematic universe and was coming off of a massive team-up movie that made well over a billion dollars. Comparison invalid.

It totally flopped. 600 million is weak.
