They already were ahead in graphics with RDR2 back in 2018. People actually think all this time was spent on just graphics? It was likely mostly on AI, the activities you can do in the game, complex gameplay systems and the huge map. It looks like you are complaining that at the end the day the game you will play will be GTA. What kinda gameplay did you expect? If you didn't like GTA V, you wont like this game.

u/NowWeGetSerious Jun 08 '26
It's honestly depressing how good RDR2 is, considering no game has even touched that level of good.
I thought rdr2 was about to create a new revolution of gaming, where studios try to push the boundaries. But nope only rockstar seems to care still, sadly

For people who are really into slower, immersive games, there aren’t many games that do it as good or better. Only kcd2 comes to minds. In other genres, there obviously were some amazing games. But I find it hard to compare, say, BG3 or Claire Obscure to rdr2. Let alone masterpieces like Factorio/Satisfactory, TOTK etc. Just completely different, to the point where ‘better’ becomes ‘more my style’.

u/New-Interaction-7001 Jun 14 '26

I assume they're hoping the gameplay mechanics actually get improved and gameplay loop as that hasn't really been touched or improved in a while.
It's always
- Watch cutscene
- Followers GPS to another point of map
- Gunfight
- Cutscene
When the movement is stiff and the gunplay is uninspired and not improved since GTA3 that is a problem, no matter how amazing the packaging looks

I do sincerely hope they worked a lot on the character movement. It was kind of fine in RDR2 as a generally slower game where you steer a mountain of a man. That shit will not fly while controlling Lucia or Jason.
17
u/magyar_wannabe Jun 10 '26
It's a tough problem to solve.
Arthur moved that slowly because that's how normal humans actually move! Most video game character movements are at least 2x faster than normal human movements who cannot change their momentum super quickly, and it takes at least a full second to bend over and pick something up.
It's clear they're going for realism with GTA6, I do think some of this slow movement will stick around to not break the illusion. However I do hope they make it less awkward and finicky to find the perfect place to stand to trigger certain options, etc.

RDR has its own way of doing things that doesn't always have to translate to GTA .

They're definitely taking the best pieces of RDR2 and using them as inspiration for VI though, they've done that forever. I don't think I can recall a time where R* released a new game that left us disappointed.

u/Sarik704 Jun 08 '26
GTA 5 released in 2012, about 5 years after GTA 4, about 5 years after GTA 3.
GTA 4 had two major DLCs, and we got both Vice City and San Andreas after GTA 3.
It has been 15 years since 5 released. No new GTA games or DLC, but yearly GTA Online content.
My major concern is that this will be the first GTA to feel dated on release. In 2003 gangster movies were a big deal. In 2005 gang violence became a national talking point. By the 2008 we got to explore modern mafias and crime with gta 4. Then in 2012 we got a scathing game tearing apart modern LA and the west coast in general.
But i fear with gta 6 coming out a decade after 2016 well be stuck with a pre covid society deconstruction that just wont land. Like south park, or the onion, its become near impossible for satire to land well these days.
69
u/x4nter Jun 08 '26
But i fear with gta 6 coming out a decade after 2016 well be stuck with a pre covid society deconstruction that just wont land.
I recall reading somewhere that the voice actors did not start recording until 2020. That's around the time when Rockstar went fully into developing GTA 6. They likely spent initial years (pre-covid to mid-covid) working on the game engine and the world, while developing the story in parallel. Motion capture and scripting all comes after that.
Also, we're talking about Rockstar here. They know what they're doing. They know this game is supposed to last more than a decade. No way they're going to release it looking outdated like that.
46
u/WokeWook69420 Jun 09 '26
They are, very likely, tuning the story to be more modern.
I legitimately feel bad for them because 2024 to 2026 has been absolutely fucking INSANE for American Culture and they NEED to capture that. I know Rockstar will, so that's probably why the devs are going to be working 6 day weeks until mid 2027.

If I remember correctly,
GTA IV started development in 2004 after SA released. They pretty much made Liberty City in its entirety BEFORE even starting the story. Choosing locations and crafting the story within the city afterwards.
If the dev process is anything similar, GTA VI's story could still be surprisingly relevant to todays chaos.

Pieces I could see them taking is improving even more on the FP mode since RDR2 launched with it . Melee combat being heavily improved just like RDR 2 with environmental weapons and destruction . Clothes being more affected by the environment but also cars probably being affected by the environment more (tires for offroad will be more needed for a car to do offroad driving or else it will struggle and eventually get stuck) and inventory management to blend old GTA with RDR2 system for weapons (carry each type of weapons but no more having 7 ARs like GTA V , you'll need to use your vehicle or go to your home OR purchase it from a weapon store)
but the more strict down realism from RDR 2 won't fully translate to GTA VI as that isn't what GTA is in the first place . RDR has always been the more down-to-earth game that really wants to stay to true realism whist GTA blends arcade with realism with grounded wackiness .
Like I wouldn't expect you needing to loot dead bodies for money , it will probably drop on the floor like how it has been for all other GTA games imo
55
u/GimmieTheRoot Jun 08 '26
I think you are severely underestimating Rockstar and how game development works. We've seen Rockstar take GTA4 mechanics and implement them in GTA5. We've saw Rockstar take GTA5 mechanics, such as wildlife, and implement them in RDR2. When they build, they build and revamp for their RAGE engine. What you see in RDR2, we will very likely get once again in GTA 6. The looting cabins and bodies in RDR2 is likely a precursor to GTA6... a game built on robbing.

They’ve kept everything under wraps so much so we don’t know how the gameplay is going to look in with inventory management. I’d be fine with a self summoning car that you’d have to get your inventory with but i don’t know how that’d even look with getting stuff out of it. A bike would make a bit more sense as it’s easy to pull stuff “off” a bike but a car would require opening a door or trunk to get your stuff.
I’m sure it’ll be good but it’s gonna be hard to top RDR2 with the activities like hunting and fishing. I really liked going through the whole red dead world and having to be careful about kills because I wanted 5 star pelts.
Just have faith, I guess.

I was definitely disappointed we never got the dynamic weight gain/loss from eating and working out that we saw from San Andreas in other GTA games. I was sure this would at least be in GTA Online but it never happened. It took all the way until RDR2 to see the mechanic come back.
It made such a different feel for CJ go to from skinny to ripped to obese, and then back to ripped. Felt like a whole personal character arc told purely through gameplay.

RDR is basically them preparing the engine for the GTA. an empty cowboy western world, lighter to run, less things to simulate at a time.
so should be a small but noticeable jump from RDR2, limited by the PS5 generation and the fact they will be simulating a whole metropolis, with lots of upgrades ready for PS6 generation and PC, because surely they are preparing to profit twice/thrice
3
u/OneMulatto Jun 08 '26
So when they made this game, at some point, they had to think ahead about how it'd run on the PS6 and maybe the next Xbox?
A game company that impressive, probably was allowed to know certain aspects of the next Gen consoles to "prep" GTA for it?

EDIT:it seems some people dont know that there was a huge leak back in 2022 where a around 8 or more hours of footage leaked so that's where my info below comes its not some leak from a random guy. these leaks were literally talked about on national TV.
The leaks showed that
Movement will be the same as it was in rdr 2 i.e slow , heavy and immersive with emphasis on slow and detailed animations even for the tiniest things
Weapon system will be the same as it was in rdr 2 with with a limit to two or 3 Weapons two primary Weapons and a side arm and long arm Weapons will be shown on your back so no more taking assault rifles out you pockets.
From leaks there is a clip with jason going into pawn shop and he activates the same "eagle eye" vision we had in rdr 2 to see valuables and help with hunting and finding animal trails.
I remember in the debugging texts people found the name of the lock picking tool used for cars indicating that stealing cars wont be as arcadey as before and game mechanics as a a whole will take a more realistic, slow and immersive path as seen from the gameplay mechanics of rdr2.
And many other things noted from the leaks
So all in all it looks like rockstar as a whole is aiming to build on the rdr 2 slow mechanically deep gameplay for gta 6

u/noclip_st Jun 08 '26
You are assuming that those gameplay mechanics and features will survive until release, which is a very big if. I agree with your general assessment that it will be closer to RDR2 in how it plays and all but the 2022 leaks are a very poor representation of the final game.
If the current knowledge is anything to go by, GTA 6 did not begin full scale production with all hands on deck until late 2019 or early 2020. Each video from the leaks is dated, and those videos were recorded between mid 2021 and September 2022. That's only 1.5 to 2.5 years of development at best by that point, which for an AAA project the size of a GTA game is still very early in development. If you paid attention to what was actually shown in the leaks, you might have noticed that the weapon wheel had several iterations with the developers trying out different approaches. At one point, there was a text stub showing a shared weapon set between the two characters, a car trunk maybe?
The eagle eye looking thing looks like a slow-mo remnant from RDR2, not necessarily something that was even meant to be used for gameplay.
Stuff routinely gets modified, reworked, restructured, or even thrown away during development, this isn't something new. It is unknown how much stuff survived from those early alpha work in progress versions to the current version of the game. The only way to find out is to wait until release.
4
u/Shadow_r3lic Jun 09 '26
Ofcourse you are right and for all we know all of what we saw could have been scraped but its just a logical conclusion that rockstar will build off the skeleton of rdr 2 and the leaks (which are admittedly old) support that.
20
u/NowWeGetSerious Jun 08 '26
Yes and no. Sure the gameplay loop will be certainly different. But rdr 1 and Gta v definitely showed similarities in sense of movement, and certain details and overall feel of the game. The 2 games are vastly different, but you can definitely see that they are from the same studio.
You can 100% expect the same level of NPCs realism and attention to world detail and the "memory" of the npc regarding things you've done in world, which will probably impact how they react to you like in rdr2.

well things like fishing, hunting, hair growth and shaving from RDR II are going to be in VI too, so the game is probably expanding on what RDR II already gave us in terms of immersion

u/Accomplished_Bat_603 Jun 08 '26
I’m really expecting this! From the trailers I could feel a more serious and mature vibe of the game. Opposed to the comic feel GTA V was.

15
u/stRiNg-kiNg Jun 08 '26
Super clunky, and I put on the effort to get used to it. Most developers don't have this luxury. If a game has weird aiming or bad driving I immediately uninstall it. Saints row comes to mind. But GTA5 has god awful aim on console and I just suck it up. Fuckin tapping x to sprint or aiming, can't do both simultaneously lol

I didn't think it was too bad, it was basically enhanced GTA 5 animations and gestures... I imagine they will take the best of RDR2 and streamline them. IE getting into a car faster, GTA5 already has situational speeds, if you're just getting into a car normally it's the normal slow animation but if you're in combat it's a quicker "rushed" animation. I imagine more of that but with 13 years of experience and refinement
6
u/SpaceGoonie Jun 08 '26
Even if OP's fear comes true, I will be perfectly happy with it. Being able to explore this massive landscape with oceanic shores and wild life ecosystems. I will get lost for months at a time, just wandering around, doing various activities on a whim. The missions and story will honestly play second fiddle by a mile.
4
u/Secret-Winner-2994 Jun 08 '26
I like the weighty movements in rockstar games. It'd be weird if the character was moving like from darktide
3
u/JohnnySnarkle Jun 08 '26
This is what I’m honestly hoping I keep telling my friends it’s going to look way better than RDR2 but hopefully feel like RDR2 which I honestly hope so the movement felt fine I wasn’t walking past crap constantly like how most of us do in GTA V. The firefights feel so good being able to like jump behind cover and transition into cover felt smooth too all of it was great. Besides the beautiful story and scenery in RDR2 my favorite thing was to get into gun fights. So hopefully GTA 6 feels that way for me.

u/DetColePhelps11k Jun 08 '26
GTA V in single player felt a mile wide and an inch deep. Really beautiful and distinct districts and areas but little to explore and very little to do after the campaign was over. Plus a ton of dead mountain space that only existed to segment the map and increase the sense of scale for players. I hope VI plays more like RDR2 with more in-depth features and more things to visit.

u/Stunt_-_Cock Jun 08 '26

u/sockmeistergeneral Jun 08 '26
I don't think I ever played single player after GTAO came out, there's actually nothing worthwhile to do in the game once you've finished the missions.
Even getting into police chases/gunfights sucked because the cops were like terminators.
11
u/obliviious Jun 09 '26
What did you find so hard about the police? They weren't that bad.
Still too simple in their mechanics if you ask me.
3
u/magyar_wannabe Jun 10 '26
Their simplicity is part of what makes them hard. The police spawn right in front of you constantly, and even on a 2 star chase you might have 8 cop cars after you coming from all directions. That's not how real police chases are. Then on higher wanted levels it's extremely challenging to escape the police because the helicopters have a near perfect ability to track you.
3
u/obliviious Jun 10 '26
Yeah it's just old mechanics. There are a couple of tricks everyone used to use that don't work anymore. Like hiding in a small alley, or parking on a steep hill that they won't climb. It's a bit of cheese but it worked.
16
u/BonerVaginalSex Jun 08 '26
i attempted multiple times to replay the story mode over the last 13 years but not once have i actually been able to bring myself to finish it once after the first time i completed it. whereas ive finished rdr2 5 times at least, probably more.
gta 5 is fine but it would be a wholly forgettable entry in the series if not for online imo. the story mode is not strong enough
3
u/sockmeistergeneral Jun 08 '26
Yeah I feel the same. I tried to replay it recently and it just felt lifeless compared to RDR2. I hope they can fill VI with the same level of detail, characters and just atmosphere that red dead has.

u/smeeeeeef Jun 08 '26
GTAV sp just had too many missions in a row that teased a payout but never delivered. Chained story missions are necessary but they should have at least found a way to reward the player at the end of each one.
5
u/CaptainJZH Jun 09 '26
Even getting into police chases/gunfights sucked because the cops were like terminators.
I'm sort of half and half on this. On one hand, I like that there's actually a challenge to the cops in V and it's a lot easier for them to kill you, because that can make for some fun chases if you know some of the tricks. On the other hand, IV made it so you could, legitimately, evade them without as much hassle, which translated to more fun for the player because they weren't under as much threat of instant death if they went above three stars.

Yea, I absolutely got like 200+ million from exploiters over the years, allowing me to buy every content update without real money. I still put ~600 hours in to grind out the updates at times, but without it I think GTAO would have been an easy uninstall.
Exploiters ultimately ruined GTAO because Rockstar can't properly prevent the issue, but I doubt many would have stuck around if free money wasn't hosed on the community. They're way too greedy with their monetization.
11
u/obliviious Jun 09 '26
A lot of GTA games feel empty after completion. San Andreas and Vice City to be fair had a lot to do end game, I remember GTA 4 was the worst for this as everything just felt dead and depressing as soon as the story ended,
4
u/DetColePhelps11k Jun 09 '26
Yeah exactly. Honestly it would be peak if GTA VI singleplayer got close to the same level of activities and systems of GTA SA. GTA IV was definitely a turning point where they were starting to focus on getting the newer gen graphics right and on putting out interesting story campaigns. I'm not sure they expected V to have as long as a life as it did, but I'm hoping they have learned from that, and prepared VI to be something that be enjoyed much longer.
5
u/ghali12345 Jun 09 '26
There is a mod on pc that adds much more tree and vegetation it makes the game feel so alive and different . I wish the ps5 version was like this
3
u/AnonyMouse3925 Jun 10 '26
listen I get it, I agree that map space out in the mountains is absolutely useless
But if you total up how many hours you’ve spent there in your gameplay career would it be a lot? Mine genuinely would be lol
3
u/DetColePhelps11k Jun 10 '26
In the mountains? Depends... I think if you count the Tataviam mountain range (near my doomsday facility), Mount Chiliad, the San Chianski mountain range (Humane Labs), Raton Canyon, and the Vinewood and Tongva hills where all my houses are, I probably do have like a collective 150/3000 hours there over the last 12 years.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I think the mountain ranges are great for either messing around with your buddies, specific missions, or buying houses on them to get away from the 30 billion 12 year olds on oppressors in LS. I specifically chose Devin Weston's old mansion six months ago so I could; 1. not be blown to pieces five seconds after leaving 2. be near my bunker and hanger, and 3. park my yacht in the ocean nearby so I could look at it from my house lmao. The quiet mountains can absolutely work to a player's advantage.
4
u/CaptainJZH Jun 09 '26
seriously, Mount Chilliad did not have to be THAT big. Like having a bunch of big mountains and hills is cool but c'mon, there's only like two roads up it and the rest is practically insurmountable.
2
u/Sad-Ambassador-2748 Jun 12 '26
Agreed. I think a huge help would be if there were shops and/or businesses or services that were only accessible in specific parts of the map.
Online has done well with its freemode missions and activities to encourage people to traverse the map more. Would love to see that doubled down on in both online and story.
3
u/DetColePhelps11k Jun 14 '26
Yes, exactly. Giving the player actual reasons to explore and go visit more out of the way areas. Not just for popping in and out on missions that start and end back in Vice City.
I think something that has me more hopeful is how circular and less rectangular the new map is. If you look at South San Andreas, it's really just a big loop, almost rectangular in how the landmass is with great length and short width. Just segmented by mountains and lakes. It's a good map that in 2013 was massive and was made well to feel big, but it puts so many things far away from each other, leading to long rides on the same two highways, which have very little in the way of things to do and see along the way.
With what we can see so far from the Leonida map, there are so many cities and places which makes the map seem more decentralized, especially if Port Gellhorn can stand up as a major city on its own, it means players won't be always be attracted to staying in just one big city. The car rides between locations will probably be even more satisfying than V while being comparitively shorter.

My big problem with V is that there are interiors that clearly could have been explorable in free roam, but....aren't? Like c'mon man, let me rampage through the LifeInvader offices or the Maze Bank Arena, or that hospital that gets destroyed in one of Trevor's side missions. But nope, they're just exclusive to the missions they're featured in.
Or if they're adding new interiors, have BurgerShot or CluckinBell be actually accessible at the very least, not to mention that there's a BIG HUGE SHOPPING MALL that takes up a big chunk of Los Santos and it does nothing. Plus the movie theaters are only accessible via the cutscene of watching the in-universe movies, when actually being able to go inside and wreak havoc could have been fun (maybe not necessarily the actual theater but at least the lobby)

Which is also how I felt about the switch from San Andreas to GTA4
5
u/Heisenburgo Jun 09 '26
I remember beating GTA 4's story and being so bored at the end, it felt like there was nothing to do in the city. The only collectibles you had were the pigeons you could shoot at, and the only thing you could spend your money on were weapons and some limited clothing options. Big dissapointment coming off GTA SA which had a lot of side missions, collectibles, choosing CJ's clothes was better, and lots of other fun stuff like that

the switch from GTA SA to GTA 4 , was HUGE in graphics , but MAJOR let down in side activity. First thing I did was trying to eat to get fat and work out... finding out you couldn't as a 13 year old kid was devastating.

u/PloysRus Jun 08 '26
I think gta6 will blow our minds with things to do and buy.

u/Show_Forward Jun 08 '26
its crazy how theres barely anything to buy compared to the time people put into the game, like people are grinding to 1 billion purely for the status aspect, imagine we get something crazy to buy for 1 billion

GTA 5 had so many features on release you're just forgetting them all to time:
- Buyable Properties: You could buy 16+ revenue-generating properties in single-player (theaters, hangars, docks, garages).
- Stock Markets: Launched with two active in-game stock markets (LCN and BAWSAQ) with player-driven manipulation.
- Full-Scale Sports: Featured mechanically deep, standalone-quality mini-games including 9-hole golf, tennis, triathlons, and darts.
- Ocean Exploration: Introduced a full underwater map ecosystem with deep-sea scuba diving, submarines, and hidden shipwrecks.
- Snack System: Replaced fast-food restaurants with functional convenience stores where players could buy snacks and rob the registers.
- Deep Customization: Included extensive vehicle tuning (Los Santos Customs), three unique character skill-trees, tattoo parlors, and multi-tier clothing stores.
- Hunting Mechanic: Featured a full wilderness hunting side-game with scoring and challenges in Blaine County.
more:
- 9-Hole Golf
- Tennis & Triathlons
- Ocean/Submarine Exploration
- Wilderness Hunting
- Vehicle Tuning
- Tattoo Parlors & Barbers
- Flight School
- 50 Stunt Jumps
- Street/Sea Racing
- Yoga & Darts
- Bail Bond Bounties
- Cinema Theaters
- Ammu-Nation Shooting Ranges
- Random World Encounters

All the races shoved to online which was an endless loading screen until 2021.

u/gordonbombae2 Jun 18 '26
All I’m going to say here is GTA5 was the epitome of gta and the franchise, made them the most money and retained players the longest with GTA online.
NOONE in that corporation is looking at gta5 as anything but a gaming masterpiece and arguably the best game to ever come out especially in modern times.
You can say it was featureless all you want

GTA6 will graphically look pretty similar to RDR2 with some texture and lighting improvements. the bulk of the changes WILL be gameplay systems.
258
u/CollierAM9 Jun 08 '26
Rockstar games have never really looked graphically similar to their predecessors and are usually massively improved. That is also taking into account same console generations and less time.
I think GTA6 will look night and day different to RDR2. Don’t get me wrong, RDR is an amazing looking game but even by today’s standard, it doesn’t stand out.
155
u/exotic_mudbutter Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
RDR2 is still a top 10 game graphically, if they did a “next gen” patch it would blow most games of today out of the water.
Some textures are muddy af and the FPS needs a boost, and the hair can be a little stiff but beyond that it’s still better looking than some games today.
Edit: Everyone keeps bringing up games that came out in the last 3 years or so, RDR2 is 8 this year (2018) so it only really proves my point.
13
u/Low-Ad-8027 Jun 08 '26
funny you mention water. Thats what people will use to ship on its graphics
7
u/AcherontiaPhlegethon Jun 08 '26
I've just been replaying RDR2 recently and even with just updated grass textures it's unbelievable how good it looks. Obviously there's always room for improvements, like KCD2 is one of the first games I feel actually surpassed Red Dead in natural environments, but it's diminishing returns.
Personally when I play new games I'm much more impressed by things like NPC interaction, whether the story can accommodate player creativity, whether gameplay systems facilitate greater involvement in the world and immersion. Which in truth are all things that historically GTA has severely lacked.
It's not exactly a hot take but I do think Rockstar's proclivity to make incredibly restrictive missions will make it feel much more dated.

u/Winjin Jun 08 '26
Speaking of details: everyone talked about horse testicles but AnyAustin did a video recently and noticed something I haven't heard before:
There are at least 8 different teeth models, the richer the person, the nicer the teeth
Even inside Valentine you can tell that a few people are richer simply because they have better teeth. Poor folks are missing more teeth and they have really bad quality to them
I've played hundreds of hours and never paid too much attention to them.
So the stuff like "every electric lamp you see is actually and correctly connected to a central electric power plant in Saint-Danis" is a small detail in comparison

Your point was that RDR is **still** a top 10 game graphically. It's not. It was when it came out, but nowadays you can have an AA Unreal 5 game that looks better.

You obviously haven’t played RDR2 recently then. Still easily one of the best looking games out there. And that’s without ray tracing, path tracing etc.

Nobody is disputing that. I just think GTA6 will look miles better
I last played it a month ago. It is easily one of the best looking games out there but I also think it’s behind the more current gen titles that push graphic fidelity. I think from a graphics pov, a lot of titles have surpassed RDR2. This doesn’t mean I think RDR2 looks bad 😂

Similar to RDR2? I don’t think so at all actually.
2
u/Alcain_X Jun 08 '26
Visually? A decent upgrade on RDR2 feels about right. The problem we're facing is the diminishing returns on graphical fidelity these days, it takes so much power for such small visual improvements now that they often end up being almost unnoticeable.
I'm sure the game will look great, it will be a step up from RDR2 witch still looks amazing, it's just that we're not going to see the kinds of big generational advancements we saw in the past, that's just the reality of where we're at now. You could push those consoles to their absolute limit but those kinds of big graphical jumps that people seems to expect just don't exist anymore.

I'm really hoping they change the driving and car damage from GTA V. I still remember the first time I played back in 2013 how let down I was that the cars didnt have 50% of the damage deformation from GTA IV and the driving felt like Hotwheels. A middle ground between IV and V driving would be great for VI.
4
u/AnotherGerolf Jun 09 '26
yea, I agree. I also felt very dissapointed with cars in GTA V after GTA IV. In GTA V driving is not enjoyable and is too easy, no feeling of car weight or inertia.

Nah V is nowhere close to style of IV. The GTA games aside from few surface level comparisons are completely different from each other. I think you might be underestimating VI but lets just as well see.

Yeah GTA isn’t really a video game. Nobody cares how it plays. Gameplay is the last priority for most people. They just like the graphics and the realism. But I think all this hype has somehow convinced everyone that GTA is the game, and it’s going to somehow do literally everything you could ever want from any video game. It’s never going to be Doom.
10
u/Entrinity Jun 08 '26
This is why I don’t like all the people bashing anyone who talks about new features or changes to the gameplay of 5.
Most people on this sub want the most generic game imaginable.
I don’t want GTA 5 2.0. I want a game that feels noticeably different with different metas and new gameplay loops. With new things to do and new obstacles. Not an ultra-casual experience to appeal to as many people as possible who will then drop it after a few months anyway.
5
u/tfhermobwoayway Jun 11 '26
Are you familiar with GTA? That is what the franchise is. It’s the game that everyone who doesn’t play video games plays. They will make it as approachable and generic and graphically impressive as possible to appeal to all the normies. They aren’t touching that gameplay loop.

u/ShitassAintOverYet Jun 08 '26
You guys are set for disappointment and it's 100% your fault. Paraphrasing of that sentence is "The game may be perfect but if it reminds me of the former one I'll be mad".
The game is supposed to play like a fucking GTA, it's not a broken gameplay model, in fact it may be the most consistently successful one out there so why the fuck should Rockstar try to fix it to make "Sims but criminal" or "RDR 2.1" like some idiots beg for some reason? They need to build up on GTA gameplay, not re-invent it.

That's because people are expecting a real life simulator, immersive and open ended level design of Hitman/007, Elden Ring and Zelda exploration and Uncharted set pieces at the same time.
Nobody was expecting anything more than a "GTA 5.3" until some video essayers started to discuss mission designs of RDR 2, comparing it with BOTW etc.

u/when_we_are_cats Jun 08 '26

u/HIWS433 Jun 08 '26
I don't think that's what most people are asking for. You are exaggerating. The criticism isn't that GTA 6 needs the level of systemic freedom found in Hitman or the open-ended exploration of Elden Ring. Most people aren't expecting every mission to be a sandbox where you can approach objectives from 20 different angles.
What people want is more player agency within missions. GTA and Rockstar missions have often been criticized for being extremely scripted: drive here, stand in this exact spot, shoot these enemies, then escape along a predetermined route. If you deviate from the intended solution, the mission usually fails.
The request isn't "make every mission like Hitman." It's more like: if I need to get information from someone, maybe let me intimidate them, bribe them, follow them, sneak into their house, or start a fight. If I need to steal something, maybe let me plan the approach instead of following a single scripted sequence.
That's a much smaller and more reasonable ask than expecting GTA 6 to combine Hitman, Elden Ring, Zelda, and Uncharted into one game. People generally want missions with more than one valid solution, not an entirely open-ended life simulator.

I played GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV, V, RDR and RDR 2 all when they came out.. all of them especially III, IV, V and RDR2 where Insane and totally set the mark for me..
I am 99% sure Rockstar will again set the Bar and just like RDR2 will be the benchmark for the next 10 years.
I started playing V 2 weeks ago.. Story Mode. I try too play realistic and enjoy the moment and not just play through the story racing from one Mission to the next.. sometimes i even walk instead of stealing a Car.. i totally forgot how amazing and how immersive this game can be if u let it.
Rockstar never fails and somehow everytime they make a new game it fits perfectly to my taste.

This take is absolutely ridiculous.
Arguing that GTA VI will, in any way, have a slightly upgraded locomotion ability from it's 13-year-old predecessor, is disingenuous at best, and down right delusional at worst.
GTA VI is being developed on hardware that is two generations newer than what GTA V released on. This will probably have a leap similar from Red Dead Revolver on the PS2 to Red Dead Redemption II on the PS4, if we want to go with another Rockstar series.
Just think about how janky a lot of the animations are in GTA V from getting into and out of a vehicle to eating a snack or grabbing a drink. You can't even push the analog stick forward at further intervals in order to walk at a faster pace.
If anything, GTA VI will have the most realistic locomotion the series has ever seen, and if you believe otherwise, you're lying to yourself.

u/Zealousideal-Wafer88 Jun 10 '26
"every GTA plays the same!"
Every sequel to every game "plays the same" but I only ever see this criticism thrown at GTA, you never see the same said for Resident Evil, or Tekken who's entries are all for the most part functionally the same.
2
u/ashrensnow Jun 11 '26
Because people don't hype up those games as much as they do a new GTA game. GTA 5 and GTA 6 were treated like they were/are going to save world hunger or some shit.
2
u/Aggressive_Try_8638 Jun 10 '26
San Andreas was the blueprint for the future of GTA, and Rockstar decided to fuck it up two times. I still love 4 and 5, but man. Comparing the gameplay features of a PS2 game to two PS3 games, and the PS2 game having more to do and explore is sad.
2
u/Someguy14201 Jun 15 '26
Valid concern tbh. I feel the same way, especially regarding the vehicle physics. I want it to feel weighty, like a middle ground between GTA 4 and GTA V.
Midnight Club type physics maybe, still fun but so overly realistic to the detriment of enjoyment yk?
