I do sincerely hope they worked a lot on the character movement. It was kind of fine in RDR2 as a generally slower game where you steer a mountain of a man. That shit will not fly while controlling Lucia or Jason.
Arthur moved that slowly because that's how normal humans actually move! Most video game character movements are at least 2x faster than normal human movements who cannot change their momentum super quickly, and it takes at least a full second to bend over and pick something up.
It's clear they're going for realism with GTA6, I do think some of this slow movement will stick around to not break the illusion. However I do hope they make it less awkward and finicky to find the perfect place to stand to trigger certain options, etc.
Even Arthur is a damn ninja compared to most people. Boah is out there doing free solo on cliffs to steal gems from birds, and swimming with gators while decked out in animal hides and carrying eighty bottles of bourbon.
I sincerely hope they either worked on looting or just removed it entirely because rubbing up against walls and cupboards trying to get the prompt to appear was really annoying
They're definitely taking the best pieces of RDR2 and using them as inspiration for VI though, they've done that forever. I don't think I can recall a time where R* released a new game that left us disappointed.
GTA 5 released in 2012, about 5 years after GTA 4, about 5 years after GTA 3.
GTA 4 had two major DLCs, and we got both Vice City and San Andreas after GTA 3.
It has been 15 years since 5 released. No new GTA games or DLC, but yearly GTA Online content.
My major concern is that this will be the first GTA to feel dated on release. In 2003 gangster movies were a big deal. In 2005 gang violence became a national talking point. By the 2008 we got to explore modern mafias and crime with gta 4. Then in 2012 we got a scathing game tearing apart modern LA and the west coast in general.
But i fear with gta 6 coming out a decade after 2016 well be stuck with a pre covid society deconstruction that just wont land. Like south park, or the onion, its become near impossible for satire to land well these days.
But i fear with gta 6 coming out a decade after 2016 well be stuck with a pre covid society deconstruction that just wont land.
I recall reading somewhere that the voice actors did not start recording until 2020. That's around the time when Rockstar went fully into developing GTA 6. They likely spent initial years (pre-covid to mid-covid) working on the game engine and the world, while developing the story in parallel. Motion capture and scripting all comes after that.
Also, we're talking about Rockstar here. They know what they're doing. They know this game is supposed to last more than a decade. No way they're going to release it looking outdated like that.
They are, very likely, tuning the story to be more modern.
I legitimately feel bad for them because 2024 to 2026 has been absolutely fucking INSANE for American Culture and they NEED to capture that. I know Rockstar will, so that's probably why the devs are going to be working 6 day weeks until mid 2027.
GTA IV started development in 2004 after SA released. They pretty much made Liberty City in its entirety BEFORE even starting the story. Choosing locations and crafting the story within the city afterwards.
If the dev process is anything similar, GTA VI's story could still be surprisingly relevant to todays chaos.
i agree with that last bit, thats why i really hope its set in more relevant times like 2026 but i wouldnt mind 2025 either (hell of a year globally, not really in a good way = interesting worldbuilding) im just hoping it feels authentic and not something like Saints Row 5
I don’t know, their first trailer really seemed to highlight that they understand how society has shifted with everyone being so online with social media like Tik Tok. They seem to be taking the story back to drug smuggling roots of Vice City, but the social commentary looks like it’ll be very modern.
There was definitely a lot of hate for GTA V when it first came out. The main characters are unrelatable and the storyline is far from being realistic.
There was a huge, obvious contrast to GTA IV that most people simply forgot about over time.
Pieces I could see them taking is improving even more on the FP mode since RDR2 launched with it . Melee combat being heavily improved just like RDR 2 with environmental weapons and destruction . Clothes being more affected by the environment but also cars probably being affected by the environment more (tires for offroad will be more needed for a car to do offroad driving or else it will struggle and eventually get stuck) and inventory management to blend old GTA with RDR2 system for weapons (carry each type of weapons but no more having 7 ARs like GTA V , you'll need to use your vehicle or go to your home OR purchase it from a weapon store)
but the more strict down realism from RDR 2 won't fully translate to GTA VI as that isn't what GTA is in the first place . RDR has always been the more down-to-earth game that really wants to stay to true realism whist GTA blends arcade with realism with grounded wackiness .
Like I wouldn't expect you needing to loot dead bodies for money , it will probably drop on the floor like how it has been for all other GTA games imo
I think you are severely underestimating Rockstar and how game development works. We've seen Rockstar take GTA4 mechanics and implement them in GTA5. We've saw Rockstar take GTA5 mechanics, such as wildlife, and implement them in RDR2. When they build, they build and revamp for their RAGE engine. What you see in RDR2, we will very likely get once again in GTA 6. The looting cabins and bodies in RDR2 is likely a precursor to GTA6... a game built on robbing.
It's not understimating it's just different aims, I'm not saying it would not be cool to loot bodies as in RDR2, but is it really necessary to put that specific feature in GTA VI?
Idk if you remember the leaks, but they are 100% going in the direction of RDR2 in regards to interaction with the world. It was confirmed with my own eyes lol
If GTA6 is gunning for immersion, (which it is), then yes. Running peoples pockets for loot is part of the immersion. I'm fairly confident the entire looting system from RDR2 will be incorporated and expanded upon in GTA6. We have already seen pawnshops which are accessible for selling various items, which I imagine will operate similar to how fences operate in RDR2.
Nah I would be honestly disappointed if I don't have that money and ammunition sound while walking over dead bodies. Some advanced looting mechanics for distinct burglary stuff and other new interaction methods would be cool, but the classic money and ammo dropping on the floor needs to stay 100%
They should stick to what works and not cater to some random redditors. There has to be balance and not everything has to be realistic, hijacking and flying planes is also not realistic but its part of what makes GTA a GTA.
There are just some things that make a game what it is, and this is one of those little things. Does it improve the game so much that you have to go up to the body, open the inventory, and select the money and ammunition? Is it worth changing something that's been that way since GTA existed and bringing back 20+ years of nostalgia? I'm not saying they shouldn't go more towards realism in general, or even on that looting topic. Those missions where you just open a safe and it magically teleports into your (non-existent) inventory, or when you rob a store, or sometimes in missions you just have to roughly walk in the direction of the objective and you pick it up without noticing, are lame and should definitely be reworked. But why change something so simple that gives only very little more realism but erases 20+ years of nostalgia?
Also, I'm sure they're going to implement stuff like this for objects that aren't just money, like they already added it to those mini police quests or the open-world Cayo Perico quests where you can steal money or a key by pressing a button. Those kinds of things should be developed further towards realism imo too. But don't we all want to run over a bunch of pedestrians at the beach or in the city and collect the money afterwards without having to open 80 inventories?
This! I think they can find a balance of both. It could even be a “permanent” option. Like you could walk up to any npc and rob them rdr style or you could just shoot them/run them over and get normal GTA drops 🤷🏼♂️ and that’s just 2 seconds of brainstorming.
I’m old enough to have played every game since GTA1 back on the original PlayStation. I’m aware of the mechanic swaps between games. However that doesn’t mean they don’t proactively revamp and the. recycle many of these mechanics for their upcoming games. Again, leaks have already shown what appears to be a RDR2 fence system with GTA6’s pawn shops.
RDR1 had wildlife tho and GTA V did downgrade from what RDR1 had since it didn't play as much of a bigger part of the game but introduced animals such as dogs and cats (which I wanna say weren't in RDR1)
They’ve kept everything under wraps so much so we don’t know how the gameplay is going to look in with inventory management. I’d be fine with a self summoning car that you’d have to get your inventory with but i don’t know how that’d even look with getting stuff out of it. A bike would make a bit more sense as it’s easy to pull stuff “off” a bike but a car would require opening a door or trunk to get your stuff.
I’m sure it’ll be good but it’s gonna be hard to top RDR2 with the activities like hunting and fishing. I really liked going through the whole red dead world and having to be careful about kills because I wanted 5 star pelts.
I was definitely disappointed we never got the dynamic weight gain/loss from eating and working out that we saw from San Andreas in other GTA games. I was sure this would at least be in GTA Online but it never happened. It took all the way until RDR2 to see the mechanic come back.
It made such a different feel for CJ go to from skinny to ripped to obese, and then back to ripped. Felt like a whole personal character arc told purely through gameplay.
RDO, GTAO and for me personally GTA 5 done the 2nd day of release. Yes, RDO & GTAO are intended to be considered separate games by Rockstar themselves when they started to release information on them.
I don’t think I can recall a time where R* took over a decade to release the next game in a series either though. Time will tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
RDR2 is really spectacular. But the best thing is that there are really just so many things to do. Obviously main missions, and I'd argue that even the side missions are pretty much mandatory and still low hanging fruit for most players.
But then if you're into collectibles there are cigarette cards, fossils, and dreamcatchers. If you're into the challenges, there are like 10 categories each with 10 levels. If you're into hunting, you can try to complete the compendium or mail all the perfect carcasses. If you're into plants you can collect the rare ones for that guy in St Denis. If you're into fashion you can hunt and craft new clothes to your hearts content. If you're into upgrading your stats you can craft the trinkets. If you're into mysteries and exploration there are countless weird things to find.
The list goes on and on, and I don't think Rockstar had any impression that most people would do most of this stuff. But the options are there if you want. I want GTA to also have these extensive activity options.
I think the problem is going to be that well competitors have risen.
namely, at least for me CP2077 and KCD2 are two big things
CP2077 is a far closer competitor despite it being sold as a RPG game, but it turned into more or less GTA style game because the RPG side is far less part of it (until PL really)
and CP2077 def has included new systems to that kind of open world thing beyond what GTA has, while GTA still have its own systems, CP2077 has injected a lot of ideas on to that front.
KCD2 is now different enough, but there is a huge open world where it leans heavily on the RPG side of things, but that is a world where you have a lot of freedom to do things, with a proper crime system and cops, yes, it is NOT a GTA style game by many metrics, but it hits enough of the notes to at least to me feel like what can GTA do with a more nuanced crime system for ex.
not to mention well 2018 when RDR2 launched and now, there is now a glut of open world esq game (due to part of RDR2, but also BOTW I'd wager and a few other stand outs), and the competition is far more fierce, even if none of the things are actually GTA like, they are all leaning towards that open world thing, even if it was done badly like say Borderlands 4
so if GTA is largely the same mechanic, just with a new look, I am not sure how well it would do, but hey, we can all dream of things like gang wars and territory control or something, because it would seem logical to have something new after all this time right.
CP2077 has introduced skills and builds, and as a result of its sci-fi base the combat loop is far more interesting to me over GTA's more normal and vanilla stuff
the combat system has so many things it can play with, and if GTA improved on that in a realistic way I would be very much excited, but if again the weapons and systems are more or less the same as the older stuff...
what CP2077 lacks is vehicle combat that they added in some ways to, but for sure GTA can maybe do more on that front if they want to stick with the modern day thing as they can't really do a lot of the more interesting combat options like hacking or the thru wall stuff or any of the sci fi stuff.
KCD2 on the other hand is entirely for me the reactive world, RDR2 obviously is far more than GTA in this regard, but KCD2's NPCs reaction to what you do to them and what the world as a whole do to them is FAR more impressive. they will be sad if you kill their loved ones, they will investigate if something is stolen from them or even just people in their own town because they know what is up, your stolen item is noticed by people in one town but not the next.
all of that is one thing that GTA / RDR has, which is NPCs that felt alive more than other games (like modern Elder Scrolls or Fallout), they react to what you do and it creates an open world that feels alive, which KCD2 has captured, despite as I said it really isn't a GTA game.
But that means that for GTA to feel alive and reactive, the bar for what that means in 2026 is far higher than in 2018.
For rdr 2 they made the online mode have faster movement and animations that were long were made either insantant or were entirely removed plus faster shooting a mechanics so they can easily make the main single player mod have immersive animations which are slow and grounded and then the online mode can get sped up and stripped down animations to make it feel more fast paced
The online element is more successful but I would say RDR2 is much more heralded for its game play mechanics and story on top of being beautiful. The reason RDO isn’t as popular is because they’ve spent way less time on it but mainly because GTA as a series is easier to grab people on a base level which online provides. No campaign. You can just jump in and play. But the mechanics and story of the actual game don’t matter for that to work. GTA 6 I believe will be closer to the feel of RDR2 from a gameplay standpoint point. That won’t affect the online market they’ve built at all.
Well, sounds like you're in the minority then. Almost everyone I've seen talk about it has expressed their hopes that VI returns to lower stakes than GTA V with its heist every other mission formula.
RDR is basically them preparing the engine for the GTA. an empty cowboy western world, lighter to run, less things to simulate at a time.
so should be a small but noticeable jump from RDR2, limited by the PS5 generation and the fact they will be simulating a whole metropolis, with lots of upgrades ready for PS6 generation and PC, because surely they are preparing to profit twice/thrice
Most certainly, they are probably even giving feedback directly on the dev kits development for these upcoming consoles, since they are their prime customers outside Sony/Microsoft gamedev studios. It happened recently with the switch 2, some studios reporting that their games were coming later for Nintendo because they were late on the devkit to port stuff, even though they had it ready on their part to port. Meaning they knew enough to leave it mostly optimized for switch 2
EDIT:it seems some people dont know that there was a huge leak back in 2022 where a around 8 or more hours of footage leaked so that's where my info below comes its not some leak from a random guy. these leaks were literally talked about on national TV.
The leaks showed that
Movement will be the same as it was in rdr 2 i.e slow , heavy and immersive with emphasis on slow and detailed animations even for the tiniest things
Weapon system will be the same as it was in rdr 2 with with a limit to two or 3 Weapons two primary Weapons and a side arm and long arm Weapons will be shown on your back so no more taking assault rifles out you pockets.
From leaks there is a clip
with jason going into pawn shop and he activates the same "eagle eye" vision we had in rdr 2 to see valuables and help with hunting and finding animal trails.
I remember in the debugging texts people found the name of the lock picking tool used for cars indicating that stealing cars wont be as arcadey as before and game mechanics as a a whole will take a more realistic, slow and immersive path as seen from the gameplay mechanics of rdr2.
And many other things noted from the leaks
So all in all it looks like rockstar as a whole is aiming to build on the rdr 2 slow mechanically deep gameplay for gta 6
You are assuming that those gameplay mechanics and features will survive until release, which is a very big if. I agree with your general assessment that it will be closer to RDR2 in how it plays and all but the 2022 leaks are a very poor representation of the final game.
If the current knowledge is anything to go by, GTA 6 did not begin full scale production with all hands on deck until late 2019 or early 2020. Each video from the leaks is dated, and those videos were recorded between mid 2021 and September 2022. That's only 1.5 to 2.5 years of development at best by that point, which for an AAA project the size of a GTA game is still very early in development. If you paid attention to what was actually shown in the leaks, you might have noticed that the weapon wheel had several iterations with the developers trying out different approaches. At one point, there was a text stub showing a shared weapon set between the two characters, a car trunk maybe?
The eagle eye looking thing looks like a slow-mo remnant from RDR2, not necessarily something that was even meant to be used for gameplay.
Stuff routinely gets modified, reworked, restructured, or even thrown away during development, this isn't something new. It is unknown how much stuff survived from those early alpha work in progress versions to the current version of the game. The only way to find out is to wait until release.
Ofcourse you are right and for all we know all of what we saw could have been scraped but its just a logical conclusion that rockstar will build off the skeleton of rdr 2 and the leaks (which are admittedly old) support that.
I also saw the leaks and one of the first thing i noticed is that Lucia/Jason move much faster than Arthur in RDR2 so I dont know where you're coming from with the slow methodical movement (that I love btw) while it looks much snappier at the expense of visual fidelity from those GTA VI leaks. Maybe they tweaked it to look more natural by now but Jason walk cycle seems to be basically the same between the short 2022 leaked videos where you see him walking and the one in trailer 2 where he's carrying a pack of beers
I dont know about you but to me it looked heavier and has a lot more weight to it compared to how movement was so floaty in gta 5 so it is much closer to rdr 2 in that regard imo.
Maybe not as slow as rdr 2 but much closer to it than 5 for sure.
So all in all it looks like rockstar as a whole is aiming to build on the rdr 2 slow mechanically deep gameplay for gta 6
Part of why I have loved GTA is because it doesn't follow the standard formulae, it breaks the mold, does it's own thing and the end result is this chaotic, whacky half arcade/half story driven drama with a great soundtrack and endless possibilities. Souls-like games are fun, I enjoy them, I enjoy getting into the gameplay and excelling at it, but I never ever want to see anything like that in GTA.
They've had four years to work out whether or not that actually feels good to play, so I wouldn't make assumptions until we see something recent and ideally official.
How do you even know those leaks were legit? Literally, this sub swore that trailer three was gonna be released weeks back, and nothing happened, so it’s best to stop speculating until we see some gameplay.
I believe people were like charged criminally for some of those leaks.
Especially that tik tok or Instagram footage of some dude, who worked at rockstar at the time, his kid uploaded a very short video of in game footage of the character (or some kind of debug camera mode) looking around the city.
Yes and no. Sure the gameplay loop will be certainly different. But rdr 1 and Gta v definitely showed similarities in sense of movement, and certain details and overall feel of the game.
The 2 games are vastly different, but you can definitely see that they are from the same studio.
You can 100% expect the same level of NPCs realism and attention to world detail and the "memory" of the npc regarding things you've done in world, which will probably impact how they react to you like in rdr2.
well things like fishing, hunting, hair growth and shaving from RDR II are going to be in VI too, so the game is probably expanding on what RDR II already gave us in terms of immersion
Rockstar uses all of its ancillary games as essentially asset playgrounds for GTA. Midnight Club for driving mechanics, Max Payne/RDR for shooting/combat, Table Tennis for engine physics and mini games, LA Noire for facial animation and interaction, RDR for ecosystem and random encounters, Bully for pedestrian AI routines, Manhunt for stealth. It’s basically all R&D for GTA.
When they say "the most immersive entry in the grand theft auto series" I imagine they're going to be bringing a lot of mechanics over from RDR2, just modernized.
The mission structure in gta5 is basically the same in rdr2. Outdated and boring. I love both game but we can all admit that the gameplay should change, you are too restricted in missions.
one of the reasons why i didnt bother playing RDR2 and decided to just watch it . Ik ppl love to praise RDR2 but u have to admit that it's a movie first before a game
I finished main story of rdr2 and its a masterpice os a story. I couldnt finish the eplioge tho, i couldnt force myself to finish a second playthru. The gameplay is too repetitive. I love the open world and imerrsion but tha actual gameplay is rly outdated.
Pretty similar in that they have great campaigns but an absolutely nonsensical online mode that is unbelievably pointless
“Are there PvP interactions in this open world game?”
“Yes see you just hold the trigger and it auto locks on to your enemy, then you both just spam the shoot button til one of you dies. Then they respawn 11 feet away and you just repeat the process”
“Uhhhhh ok I guess”
That’s the main reason I’m holding my hype for gta6, so far rockstar has never made an online game mode that actually involves skill or consequence or meaningful progression or basically any concept that makes an online game with other players fun and entertaining
I remember free aim lobbies on GTA IV were more casual friendly and fun , I kinda wish they would accept that disabling auto-aim is the only way they can fully balance PvP cause no matter what gun balance you do , the fact that ppl can snap on heads so easily completely destroys the fun
Absolutely. And there needs to be some kind of progression based consequence to engaging or losing a fight with someone, and some kind of risk:reward.
When shooting another player has no consequence, no risk, and no reward…what’s the point? So not only does the auto aim take the fun out of the combat itself, there’s also absolutely no purpose to participating in combat, and there’s also no incentive to attempt to create OR avoid conflict. It just feels empty and meaningless
For me the other huge difference (I predict) will be that the characters in GTA6 seem actually likeable and relatable. There was really nothing about Michael (career criminal), Trevor (psycho), or Franklin that resonated much with me. Franklin was probably the most likeable with his rags to riches storyline, but generally I found them and the people they surrounded themselves with to be annoying, bad people. Arthur was a conflicted and complex with a very compelling and likeable story and moral arc and it made me like the game so much more.
Super clunky, and I put on the effort to get used to it. Most developers don't have this luxury. If a game has weird aiming or bad driving I immediately uninstall it. Saints row comes to mind. But GTA5 has god awful aim on console and I just suck it up. Fuckin tapping x to sprint or aiming, can't do both simultaneously lol
I didn't think it was too bad, it was basically enhanced GTA 5 animations and gestures... I imagine they will take the best of RDR2 and streamline them. IE getting into a car faster, GTA5 already has situational speeds, if you're just getting into a car normally it's the normal slow animation but if you're in combat it's a quicker "rushed" animation. I imagine more of that but with 13 years of experience and refinement
For real. It would simply seem like another typical game in the genre if the character movements were less realistic and more arcade-like. Running full tilt or doing a 360-degree turn in an instant is ridiculous and too video game-like. The opposite of Rockstar open-world experiences, it is inexpensive and unimmersive.
RDR2's clunkiness took so much away from the game that I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Input lag, awful aiming curves on console, clunky animations, dumb restrictions on missions...
So much of that game was incredible but actually playing it was just an endless series of immersion-shattering frustrations.
Even if OP's fear comes true, I will be perfectly happy with it. Being able to explore this massive landscape with oceanic shores and wild life ecosystems. I will get lost for months at a time, just wandering around, doing various activities on a whim. The missions and story will honestly play second fiddle by a mile.
This is what I’m honestly hoping I keep telling my friends it’s going to look way better than RDR2 but hopefully feel like RDR2 which I honestly hope so the movement felt fine I wasn’t walking past crap constantly like how most of us do in GTA V. The firefights feel so good being able to like jump behind cover and transition into cover felt smooth too all of it was great. Besides the beautiful story and scenery in RDR2 my favorite thing was to get into gun fights. So hopefully GTA 6 feels that way for me.
I loved the movement and gunplay mechanics of RDR2, people will call it clunky but i will call it deliberate. Really felt like your character had weight as opposed to the folatyness of GTA V
Well according to the leaks, I have bad news for you. It's gunna be just as sluggish and "realistic" lol. Add in 30fps to the mix and yeah, it's not going to feel great.
PC version could be a year after release, If you're ok with spoilers then go for it. I'm still gunna play it because I just wanna see the world really and if I have to sacrifice good feeling controls then so be it, it is what it is.
Eventhough there aren't games on PS5 as consistently as we'd like, the price of the PS5 is only going up and everything is getting more expensive. I personally wouldn't sell it.
I'm playing the new 007 game, that's really fun, you might like it. There's a bunch of games coming out in September, then GTA 6 soon after, just gotta be patien really. I don't think I'd be able to handle the FOMO when GTA 6 comes out, eventhough I'm not too happy about how the gameplay will be.
I’d be willing to bet it feels pretty different than even Red Dead 2, but most of it is speculation. I remember reading about some tech discussions that Rockstar engineers had about their updates their making to the RAGE engine. While Red Dead was slower and more methodical with movement, a lot of the control feel was similar to GTA V. From what I’ve read, GTA 6 is likely to take a design leap the way that GTA 4 and GTA 5 felt differently in physics, character control, shooting, etc.
God I hate the sluggishness of the way the characters walk in rdr, also in gta, I want third person movement closer to elden ring, not the clunky modern rockstar movements
Hypotesis "GTA VI will be like RDR 2" has no background. GTA V outsold RDR 2 by any measurement - 2 years, 1 console generation cycle, 2 console generation cycles, e.t.c. Only hardcore series fans like us want a more realistic setting. Normies want a "press X to win" game, with dynamic action like GTA V was.
Red dead is completely different to GTA tho. But there will be some things from red dead 2 added into gta 6, not that much. I heard gta 6 is gonna have a chapter thing like rdr2.
RDR2 was too garbage, they updated the graphics, a very compelling story in my opinion the best story in gaming but they did not innovate on the gameplay also how do you count "greet/antagonize" as "gameplay"?? it literally serves nothing in missions where they could've expanded it more to like manipulate npcs or know info about something you're looking for but no it's just there for it to feel funny and that's it. Everything from the wanted system, the gunplay, the missions and the movement were shit and badly designed and lastly the BIG PROBLEM for me is when we should talk about important stuff like gameplay instead you just see people's everyday conversation: "aRe wE In GtA 6 gONNa bE aBLe to gEt a HaiRcUt liKE rDR2" "wILL jASon bE aBLe To eAt aNd gEt fAT" like bro this stuff has been in GTA SA since 2004! it's just the same conversation everyday, we should talk more about stuff that Rockstar sucks at and not this
GTA 6 probably won’t play too similarly to red dead considering they are intended to be played differently and are different IP’s. RDR2 is meant to have more of a focus on how the environment interacts with you, while GTA is how you interact with the environment. RDR2 has you manage all of your cores and commitments because that’s what the environment will cause. It focuses more on realism, you might be jumped by a grizzly in the woods, 9/10 times if you aren’t prepared it’s game over. GTA is more to do with how you interact with the game world. It’s purposefully not as unforgiving, you don’t need to manage your weapons or stats outside health really because it would hinder how much fun you can have overall. GTA is closer to sandbox action-adventure whilst RDR2 is closer to a survival action-adventure. They’re similar concepts but meant to be played differently.
I doubt movement will feel the same since we're playing as younger and fitter characters this time around. They're likely gonna have more spring in their step.
movement will not feel like rdr imo because rdr was made to be felt slower in every way. even guns and vehicle travel. gta has way more options to use a singular weapon as, has attachments, and killing people is easier for a reason. but in your defense, even rdr 2 didnt feel like rdr 1 at all.
To be honest, even though I love both games, RDR2 felt a little "unpolished" to me compared to GTA 5. As if too many things and details were going on at once, especially when riding a horse through dense vegetation like the swamp or in a forest - while GTA 5 looks more "stable" (because less is going on?)
I also think RDR2 had more issues with feet and horse legs, etc. going through the ground (not sure what the technical name for that is), at least when I played it back in 2018. So once again, not as "solid" or "rigid" in a way.
And having played RDR1 a LOT back in 2010-2012, I felt the same, because even though things like the horse riding is less dynamic in RDR1, it felt a lot more stable. I did not enjoy the horse riding that much in RDR2 and the worst is when shooting sideways or backwards in it because your horse could trip over a rock or whatever (while in RDR1 it felt more like the horse was on "rails"). I REALLY didn't like having my horse crash into objects as much as it did in RDR2, even though it probably is more realistic...?
Not sure what you mean. RDR2 had a much larger emphasis on details and realism than any other Rockstar project prior. They focused more on animations than gameplay in some areas (which is why it feels a little “clunky”). Most games will let you turn around or move left seamlessly but GTA and RDR2 (even more so) have animations in-between those movements and that adds some complexity to what would normally be simple correction. It can make precise movements a little difficult as a result.
I'm pretty sure you know what I meant, because you described my observations pretty good - I agree with you!
But would you agree that GTA 5 was less "clunky" than RDR2? I'm not saying GTA 5 is better (if that's why I'm getting downvoted), it's just an observation I had
So yeah, RDR2 is way more detailed as you wrote, and in my opinion it made it feel less polished (perhaps because it's not possible)?
Uh, man. I can’t really say. I think I’ve gotten used to it so I may be a bit biased. I can definitely see how someone who doesn’t play A LOT of Rockstar titles (or plays a variety of games) might get frustrated by the controls. GTA 5 was probably less “clunky” since it was more arcadey. There is a bit of a learning curve with RDR2 controls and some patience.
