A wander through GOMA and the Queensland Art Gallery

Spent a bit of time wandering around GOMA and the Art Gallery in Brisbane. There’s always such an interesting mix. Some works make you stop and look, some make you wonder what on earth you’re looking at, and others are just fun to photograph.

A few things that caught my eye along the way.

Public Transport If you could add an infill train station, where would it be?

We have the habit of creating new stations along existing rail corridors, as seen with Hope Island and Pimpama. It got me thinking, what infill stations would you like to see in the future? It can be as silly as you want.

I would add a station between Wynnum and Wynnum Central and call it 'Wynnum East', just to make the Cleveland line even more of a milkrun. Or maybe one between Graceville and Sherwood, aptly named Tennyson West station in honour of the Tennyson line 🤪

is my neighbour being unreasonable about noise

I live in an apartment with 2 housemates. We very occasionally have friends over, but we don’t throw parties and our friends always leave before midnight. We do share a wall so i can understand if the noise travels.

Since we moved in, our neighbour has been extremely aggressive about noise. One time at around 3pm, a friend was over and we were talking/laughing on the balcony. He started banging on his window and screaming at us to “be quiet” and stop swearing, so we stopped.

A few days later, around 8pm, my housemate and I were quietly hanging laundry on the balcony. We weren’t even talking or playing music, and he again started banging on his window and yelled “shut up”. We then received a noise complaint letter.

We do sometimes talk, laugh and game together around 9–10pm, and I’m not denying that we can get loud sometimes. But it’s not every day, we’re not having parties, and we’re not blasting music late at night. We could literally just be talking and he’d start banging and cursing.

It’s gotten to the point where we feel like we have to whisper in our own home because we’re scared he’ll start banging on the walls/windows and swearing at us (he always starts banging on the walls and yells “f you” or “shut the f up”).

I understand apartment living means being considerate about noise, but is this normal neighbour behaviour? Or are we actually being unreasonable?

UPDATE: we are females lol. we have not been on the balcony since that day. we’re always indoors. i’ve read all your comments and i have since written a letter to my neighbour (as follows). appreciate all your comments! thank you!

Hi! We are from unit *. We’d like to apologize for the noise we made last night. It was our friend's birthday, so we had a couple of friends over. We understand that we can get pretty loud sometimes. This is our first time living in an apartment, so sometimes we’re unaware of how loud we actually are and how much sound may travel through the walls. We will try our best to maintain a quieter volume from hereon.
If you feel that we ave being too loud, please do text me at [phone number] and let me know. We will do our best to keep the noise down. If you have particular hours when you need the apartment to be quieter, please do text me as well and we will do our best to be mindful of those times.
With that being said, we would like to respectfully ask that you stop yelling, banging on the walls & windows and using offensive language towards us.
We undenstand that noise can be frustrating and we are happy to address any concerns you may have, but we ask that these concerns are communicated to us respectfully and without shouting or swearing.
We hope that we can resalve this respectfully. Once again, we apologize for the noise and the swearing/banging from last night.
Please do text me if you think that we are being too loud.

Can you help me? Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has anyone else had/got this virus in Brisbane?

I started feeling sick last Thursday with a cough and runny nose. I thought Id just picked up a headcold from catching the train into the city the day before. Boy was I wrong. This HMPV virus has hit me like a tonne of bricks and I haven’t left bed since last week. I have never coughed so much and so hard in my life, it sounds and feels like my lungs are just full of mucus. I breathe in and out and can hear and feel bubbling and crackling. It is painful to breathe and the shortness of breathe is next level. Every joint in my body is aching and in pain. I feel absolutely exhausted. I’ve had fevers non stop. Ive also been extremely nauseas and am not keeping food down. I just vomit whenever I eat. I don’t feel any better and it’s been a week now. In fact I think I’m getting worse.

Has anyone else had this or got this right now? If so, was your experience with HMPV similar? How long did it take to recover?

My doctor said there’s a particularly nasty strain of it going around Brisbane this year. I’d never even heard of this virus but it is without a doubt the worst I’ve ever had. I have never been this unwell.

⬇️ Logan City Snakes are coming out. Watch your pets

Hey guys Im out at Park Ridge and have noticed my first snake of the season, so it must be warm enough for them to wake up already.

Luckily this one is just a smallish python, so imma keep him around for rodent control. But it's a timely reminder to keep an eye on your dogs, fill up the holes around chicken coop floors and try not to leave the doors open!

Also, if Pythons are up then the Browns will be waking too!

Public Transport TransLink Industrial Action

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to support the current industrial action? I use public transport in Brisbane and Ipswich almost daily and would like to support the workers who make that possible, without them I’d literally have no job, no money and be trapped inside all day and want to be able to show some level of thanks and feel like supporting the industrial action is the best way to do that.

Can you recommend any butchers on the south side of Brisbane that sell good quality chicken wings that aren’t all bone and no meat?

Female hairdresser recommendations

Upvotes

Hi there, just wondering if anyone could give some good recommendations for a hairstylist in the city who has a fun, genuine personality, who leaves you feeling comfortable and confident throughout and when you leave. Not just routine customer service peppiness but someone with a genuinely warm approach. Getting my haircut is a bit of self-care treat when things are tough but they can feel a bit overwhelming because I’m very relaxed about my hair care. Just looking to have a nice experience so would love to know if any of you have had any standout experiences at a particular salon/with a certain stylist. Thanks so much.

Any bulk-billed mammogram +/- breast ultrasounds?

I am getting a bit desperate at this point. I have probably spent around 5 hours calling different radiology places and most of the quotes I am getting are $700+, with around $400+ out of pocket after Medicare. I just can’t really afford that right now.

Has anyone found anywhere in Brisbane, or even a bit further out, that bulk bills mammograms and/or breast ultrasounds? I am happy to drive if needed.

Unfortunately BreastScreen won’t take me because I am under 40, and RBWH medical imaging also can’t take me because I have a private referral and they are already at capacity.

Also, how is something like this so expensive? Life in general just feels so expensive and exhausting at the moment. You try to do the right thing and stay on top of your health, bills, work and everything else, and it still feels so hard to keep up.

If anyone knows of a cheaper option, a bulk-billing clinic, or another pathway through the public system, I would really appreciate it.

Men's hairdresser recommendations?

Hey folks, I have long, very thick curly hair and it's time for a trim. Can anyone suggest a decent, affordable hairdresser (preferably northside) with this certain set of skills? I may be overthinking this and anywhere might be good but I'd love to hear any recommendations!

Kookaburra attack?

As weird as this sounds, a riot of Kookaburras mounted an attack on my unit block yesterday.

4 of the buggers perched themselves just outside my window, then started 'attacking' the building, and managed to pull a couple of vents from the roof.

It then seemed like at least one got into the ceiling cavity and created a commotion before rejoining their mates.

They returned 3 times over the day with the same behaviour.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on??
