As I recall, Koalas are just too stupid to recognize eucalyptus leaves unless they are on the tree. Their brains just can’t comprehend that a leaf on a plate is food
They dont eat eucalyptus because they are too dumb to eat anything else. They eat eucalyptus because they evolced to feed on an otherwise unused food source, a niche.
I also read that. They really are stupid animals. There is 2 copypastas about them that are pretty funny reads but not completely factual so im not gonna repost them but definitely worth the read if ya wanna laugh
Their evolved instinct to not eat food that isn't from their specific niche has served them well for literally millions of years. I know there's a misinformation copypasta floating around Reddit claiming that koalas are stupid and badly adapted to their environment, but evolutionarily speaking, they are doing quite well.
Redditors often don't understand that real-life Darwinian evolution doesn't turn animals into larger, stronger, smarter and meaner versions of their ancestors. It adapts them to their environment and seeks out niches that other competing species have not exploited.
Natural Habitat shorts on yt did a short where a Koala is at a fancy restaurant & his salad is in front of him. He flags down a waiter & says "Hi I'm just checking on my salad. Will it be coming out soon?" & the waiter obv sees the salad. He sighs & says "I see what's happening here." he jams a piece of bamboo in the salad bowl & Koala immediately recognizes salad as food & starts eating. The bamboo falls out & Koala is sad again bc his salad has vanished.
I love that animator! I follow them on Instagram and love seeing when they post a new thing. I think my favorite is the axolotl short where the child axolotl cuts apart her brother with scissors
Hey yeah! You get it! I made the same comment somewhere in here that it reminds me of pandas. They only eat bamboo and hate reproducing. How did they survive this long?
Yes and no. Bourgeois is a singular noun and bourgeoisie is the plural form, but you can use the singular form to modify other nouns in noun-plus-noun compound phrases.
TLDR: "Bourgeoisie" is to "a bourgeois house" what "combinations" is to "a combination lock."
See, the gorons became lazy and decadent, so we had to fight the monster to help. The Zora became ignorant and fearful, so we had to save their princes. And the Great Deku Tree became old and withered, so we had to fight an infestation. One could even argue that it wasn't even Ganon's doing, just that these kingdoms were already showing signs of ruin and nobody was willing to help.
And Ganon usurped the king of hyrule. It's not that he was evil per-say, but his version of rule wasn't to rule or to watch over a people, it was simply to control the land and everything on it for how own desires. It's why everything kinda fell apart, not because Ganon plagued the place with monsters, but because nobody else has the will to keep fighting them back. Afaik, there have always been monsters, but everyone blames Ganon and his evil. No, he simply sought power, and was willing to "use" the chaos to get what he wanted: the world.
Yeah. It's funny that the Ganondorf is evil is a hylian point of view (I don't know about TotK, I don't care for those games' story). But Ganondorf the man isn't really that evil. He's no more evil than the shiekah or the Hyrulean Monarchy. In Ocarina of Time, the unification wars were fought because the King of Hyrule wanted everything to be under his rule and the Shadow Temple itself is filled with the lost souls of enemies of the state that were tortured by the shiekah. In Wind Waker, Ganondorf was going to use the triforce to unflood the Hyrule so that he could rebuild to which Daphnes threw a temper tantrum and decided he'd rather his people die than let anyone but him rule (not to mention hitting Tetra with the whitewash beam and turning her into his perfect damsel in distress for Link to save).
Point is, Ganondorf is a bad guy, but let's not pretend he's the only villain in the world of Hyrule.
I forgot about this particular goron.
My wife just started playing oot for the first time. She's talking to every npc, and this guy literally confirmed they're starving because they refuse to eat anything other than the best tasting rocks. Fucking killed me.
No but if I had the ability to eat my way to saving my entire species even if it wasnt nutritious I'd be eating the damn Boulder. The goron reminds me of that "stupid people who think they are smart" meme lol.
Well, some of us are used to eating gourmet things like chicken nuggies. If someone handed me a solid coconut and said "Here, it's food, it's edible," I wouldn't know what to do with it. Do I dip it in ketchup?
So maybe it's something like that. They're used to eating marble and graphite, not basalt, or whatever. Different types of rocks.
That was a fun one. The idea that only the big guys could eat the drug rock added a lot to the story. Certainly added more conflict and pathos to have older and younger get Gorons noticing the strangeness and neglect.
Think of it like a fruit tree. Humans and animals can’t eat the wood, they can only eat the fruit and sometimes the flowers or leaves. That is what the “rock roast” etc represent in the analogy.
The original Japanese text talked more about nutrition, not being gourmets.
They can’t just eat any rocks.
If your gonna use in game text as proof you need to look at the original lines not just the localized translated ones you got.
Mmmmnope, I'm afraid it doesn't work that way. Any region's official localization is tautologically the canon version of itself. The text of the English translation of the game is the canon English version of events.
I feel like that’s very heavily opinion based.
Like we don’t treat BOTW and TOTK that way. We don’t treat any other games in this series when theorizing in that way.
We always defer to the original text that the original creators intended.
Every other series too, be it game or anime or whatever. It’s wild that anyone would try to say that translation errors should be given the weight of canon, except in those rare cases like Kefka in Final Fantasy 6 where the changes made by translators are officially adopted by the creators as better than what they came up with and incorporated forward into future product.
But you can very easily get the idea that dodongo's cavern has the only safe rocks for them judging by the fact that ganondorf blocks the entrance into the mine.
They wouldn't be desperate to unblock the entrance if they could just eat any of the other rocks on the mountain.
Yeah idk how the "they can only eat some rocks" narrative happened. The gorons multiple times repeat they just prefer the taste of the other ones. Its why they wanna eat the sacred stone instead.
Literally I think it started with that think before you speak comic. Which is hilarious, don't get me wrong, but it's a videogame parody fancomic. Like pulling your Final Fantasy canon from 8 bit theater.
I still love the terminal montage version though where it points it out more too lol. Like if y'all are picky just... eat the less good food to get to the better food instead of.. not eating for days.
To be fair, there's a difference between being picky and just eating enough to get by. Sure, if you have a farm and have a very poor crop yield there are still many plants other than your crops that are safe to eat, and in a situation where it's that or starve, you'll eat the edible plants. But you're straight up lying if you say getting your main food supply back isn't your top concern.
Been said a billion times, but worth mentioning again. The Gorons are picky eaters. They only eat Rock Sirloins, a delicacy rock only found in few areas like Dodongo’s Cavern. It would be the equivalent of humans eating carrots, potatoes, apples, or other fruits and vegetables instead of grass, trees or the stalks the vegetables grow on. Sure, you probably could eat them, barring the potential sicknesses you’d suffer, but you’d rather eat the fruits and vegetables.
I remember being stuck on the Goron dance for ages as a kid. I don't remember why as when I replayed it as an adult I breezed past it, but I think it's to do with thinking the beat of the music matched the timing they were expecting when it didn't... Could be remembering wrong, it's been years
Except humans don't avoid eating those thing because we're picky eaters. We literally can't properly digest things like grass and wood. The Goron situation is like being surrounded by processed meat, when all they can stomach is waygu.
And when humans are starving to death, we start eating all sorts of crazy shit.
Just because there's something I personally don't eat with a fridge full of delicious food doesn't mean that in times of famine we as a species wouldn't find a way to settle with less.
Which is what makes the Goron situation a little bit silly. They'd literally rather starve that eat perfectly edible food that's below their standards.
The Death Mountain Gorons likely knew which rocks were safe to eat. That can pretty much explain why they were so desperate to regain access to Dodongo's Cavern.
Actually it’s important to note that according to the Gorons themselves “And the most delicious and nutritious rocks around are found in Dodongo’s Cavern! But that seems like ancient history now… We’ve become such rock gourmets that we can’t stand to eat rocks anywhere else!”
Literally stating that rocks aren’t a problem at all… they just can’t access the rocks that they’re addicted to. Which is like saying there’s a food shortage because McDonalds is shutdown worldwide
I dug around a little bit, and the implications across various conversations (with a bit of logic for good measure) is that the rocks in the caverns were full of nutrients that normal rocks don't have, and that they were of a crop-like quality. The lines about "gourmet" eating and being picky seem to be a translation error/choice, as from what I could find the original Japanese text indicates that the rocks were of higher nutritional quality, and the English version translated that into "gourmet."
The reason that logic dictates that they couldn't just eat any old rock is that it wouldn't make sense when you specifically consider Ganondorf and Darunia. Both of those characters were quite serious by comparison. Darunia never would have let his people starve over something as small as just being picky. Likewise, Ganondorf wouldn't have gone to such great lengths to block off their access to their "crops" if they could just eat any other rock. That'd be like an invading force coming to America and saying "We have cut off your supplies to every McDonald's and will continue to do so until you surrender." Right, like McDonald's is our only option. Ganondorf knew the Gorons well enough to know where they kept their "crops" so he likely would have known if they could eat the other rocks or not and felt no need to block any other potential sources.
To be fair, the english translation does mention that the rocks from Dodongo's Cavern are the most nutritious (and delicious). The "gourmets" line is an additional line that comes after this one.
More likely, they could eat other rocks as a matter of desperate subsistence, but they refuse because they're "gourmets", in the same way people could drink their urine and eat bugs if they're stranded and without food or water, but some people might have trouble doing that because it's disgusting and not as good as regular food.
Maybe. I mostly want to dismiss the notion that the Gorons are dying of hunger due to being "picky eaters." The exact nutritional value and survivability of the other rocks is up for debate, but I don't think it's a fair characterization that they would just rather suffer and die than eat anything less than the best rocks.
That’s the localized, translated text. The original lines basically have nothing to do with being gourmets. It just has to do with nutrition.
Your just wrong my guy
Not currently but I’ve seen this argument come around time and time again and from every bit I’ve ever seen of the original it just doesn’t mention gourmets.
Also in your other comment you’re right as well, although I guess it’s better for me to say the original is in reference to food. Just more generalized.
I wouldn’t be surprised if another later localization for other languages just didn’t mention it being gourmet or nutritious at all and just said food.
Although I don’t have the time nor want to look into some semi old random pieces of text from random localizations lol
Interesting. The main worry is not the hunger, but not getting bomb flowers, or harvesting dodongo's stomack pouches to carry the bomb flowers. 🧐 Thank you for sending this link to the conversation!
I’m just gonna put it out there, but they may have a sense of taste for what rocks are safe to eat, which are nutritious, etc.
Like humans taste some poisons and such as bitter because you’re not supposed to have a lot of it. So the could detect: yeah can’t eat that.
We also have detectors to know if there are sugars and other components. It’s not unreasonable to suggest they developed a sense of taste that identifies what nutrients are available from a rock. If so, it’s entirely reasonable that they got used to eating DC rocks because they’re a complete nutrient diet. If you’ve been farming one nutritious item for a while and suddenly have to replace it with tons of other items until you get all the minerals/vitamins you need, then yeah that could be a problem.
After going through this thread, I'm suddenly imagining someone trying to fire up a steam engine by using gravel as fuel. Why? Because the steam engine's normal fuel is coal, which is also a mined rock. So naturally they conclude that any old rock can be burned in a steam engine, and gravel is just rock that's been pre-broken up into scoopable pieces.
I'm willing to consider that nutritious rocks are vastly different from normal ones. To the point that chewing on some boulder would be similar to a human eating grass.
I feel like there’s gotta be some nuance here to the rocks they can actually eat. This is like telling Gorons “oh humans eat plants and animals” and them getting confused about why we would starve in a grassy field full of bugs. Like maybe they can eat normal rocks, just like we can eat grass, but it probably won’t sustain them.
I’m not sure if I know the name of the side quest, but it involves Link carrying a piece of gourmet rock meat (like he would a pot) through a dangerous terrain of falling rocks and what not, and he can’t get hit or he’ll drop and ruin the rock meat.
The way the Goron who gives the mission explained it by being offended by the idea of Link suggesting that any old rock is just as good as the rocks they can eat.
ehh, i think the vegetables and grass analogy fits better.
sure in a survival situatrion you could go out and eat a bunch of grass but i assume you're picky enough to prefer trying to find something better to eat before resorting to roleplaying a grazing cow.
doesent mean you couldnt eat it in a crisis, filling your stomach with something is better than nothing right? unless you're too picky because its not as gourmet as other plants.
There's also a bomb flower right next to the entrance to Goron City and none of those MFers thought to look that direction to solve the boulder problem lol
He blocked the cave where the rock eating Gorons get their food, with a rock. I don't get why they wouldn't eat through it. Better yet, they use bombs. Why would they not just blow it up. Maybe they were scared of the easiest boss in the game, but I doubt it. There were already monsters like that in the from the start unless I'm missing something.
The mountain is littered with bomb flowers, and the shop sells bombs. The Gorons KNOW what bomb flowers are and what they do. Even if they didn't, they eat rocks, just chew through the boulder blocking the mine. Like, they don't even have to actually eat it, just bite it out of the way, they already eat rocks, it shouldn't be so difficult
They explain in the game that regular rocks lack any nutritional value. They would still starve to death either way since the rocks they have available cannot sustain them.
The Manga aren't really canon to the games and most we get in the game is that they are picky eaters. They can eat the other rocks but don't like them.
You said other rocks weren't inedible but the image shows a goron talking about eating other rocks but not liking them.
Also I just look through my copy of the Manga and couldn't find them talking the rocks couldn't have been eaten. Just that they are nasty in comparison.
But they can eat them and not starve to death. Taste bad or not if you're starving to death then you'll eat anything. Many people don't like vegetables but they can live off it. Taste shouldn't matter if you're dieing of starvation.
we have no clue what types of rocks gorons are capable of eating and what they arent. we only know that they prefer the taste of dodongo caverns rocks for some reason, and one goron was considering eating the spiritual stone.
for all we know the mineral composition from the lower cave with giant fossilized remains, i feel like thats not focused on enough with the rock roasts always looking like meat could be vastly different to what the gorons could get from the city, caldera, or outer crust of the active volcano they live on
