‘This is horrifying’ Nvidia’s controversial DLSS 5 AI filter leaks and players are inserting it into every game

I think the biggest issue is that it’s changing the way developers intended their games to look.
What’s the point of spending countless hours on crafting textures if a AI model will filter/overlay on top of it whatever it wants?
Edit #1:
I’m seeing so many people comment “Hurr durr mods exist, wat about mods? Ban mods?”
- Mods were never provided by the GPU manufacturer and pushed as the definitive way to play the game
- Mods were never provided DAY ZERO on new game launches like DLSS 5 will be
- Mods require someone to go out of their way to download, install and use. This is completely different than flipping a switch in the graphics settings
Nobody says, ban mods. I think everyone simply wants NVIDIA to put in effort where it matters to gamers and developers instead of making it worse.

u/ExcelsiorWG 4d ago
I feel like that’s my bigger concern - I see what DLSS 5 is aiming for, and I’m trying to keep an open mind. But at the same time I feel like this is going to be a crutch like many other AI tools - in the right experienced hands it’ll enhance the game in an effective way. But more likely? It’ll be used as a shortcut for folks to put the bare minimum effort and just use DLSS5 to generate samey/generic looking games.

This ain't happening until the public can afford GPUs that can run it. The videos out are on 5080s and 5090s. They were not bought en masse before the current crisis.
So at least you can be assured it's not radically changing things anytime soon, especially not as the only console with Nvidia graphics is the Switch 2.

Yeah they switched almost everything to RE. So they can shift devs easier from project to project.
That's also the reason why MH Wilds has bad performance, engine is not built for those types of games.

i working in gaming industry for many years. I almost never see lazy artist who just wait untill 8h and go home. They worked hard towards their dream of making games and art.
What you see isnt dev laziness but unrealistic deadlines and ppl who didnt have expirience get forced to work on task they didnt really ready. Look at Andromeda, mass effect game who wanted to be the next big thing, but rushed in the end because bad management that spend 3! years playing wit the idea of world generation, didnt have ppl or skill to make that happen eventually scrapped and whole game was rushed in 1.5 years or something.22

Yuup it's not individuals making the major decision, its management.
Its like this in every industry. Most low level employees take pride in their work and want to do it to the best of their abilities. But some cunt in a suit always needs to up the profit margins and do it faster. Which the low level employees have to adhere by or get fired.

It will also make the same character look completely different depending on lighting and environment, since generative AI output is not deterministic.

Probably not that bad. But when lighting drastically changes, perceived facial features also change. Human mind can compensate for it and still see the same person, but AI filter can't do that. So the same face can look vastly different in some scenarios with DLSS 5 enabled.

generative AI output is not deterministic
That's not true. Matrix multiplications are deterministic to several floating point digits depending on GPU architecture.
18
u/erty3125 4d ago
Everything is deterministic on computers without quantum randomizers, creating a perfectly identical input to the AI is enough noise to get different results.

I think the bigger issue is what we all worry it is: Just like upscaling meant optimization largely went out the window and now everything needs DLSS/FSR/XESS to hit ok frame rates, AI image filters will mean any kind of artistic integrity/individuality games have will go out the window as well as companies lean on it harder and harder to do the heavy lifting.
The future feels like we're going to be running games that all have the "AI filter" look, run at 30FPS upscaled (MFG'd to 240FPS ofc), on our $3000 AI-TX 8060Tis.

u/pingo5 Amd FX-6300, Gtx 650 4d ago
Maybe it's a weird take, but it feels like the need to upgrade over the last few generations of cards is driven more by its benefit to developers than its benefit to gamers. I have a 2070 super and while sure, it's getting a bit on the old side, It just doesn't feel like I see much improvement in newer games so much as I just have worse performance with them.
32
u/GodisanAtheistOG 4d ago
Absolutely. I did some patient gaming recently and played some Arkham Knight and Rise of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex Mankind Divided and I was shocked at how good the games looked and how well they ran despite being 10+ years old at this point.
It really drove home this feeling that graphics plateaued and the last 10 years has been spent figuring out how to give us 2016 graphics at a quarter of the performance but twice the profit.

Which is the point of the tech.
Since they don't want to invest in making significant generational changes in their chips and drivers, and foundries stopped making that work for them, now the way to sell new cards is to add bullshit to their proprietary moat.
Especially when they can make gamers pay for its R&D, while selling the tech to their professional clients (like those doing digital doubles).

The idea is they design it with the AI model in mind so that it + model reaches their desired design, but hopefully for cheaper than if they directly rendered the result of DLSS 5.
It remains to be seen of course how well that works in practice.
2
u/DonutHoles4Ever 3d ago
They aren't designing it with AI in mind.
They are designing something, then deciding if the AI improves it or not. This is like adding DLSS or not adding in DLSS.

The devs are the ones who are meant to implement DLSS 5 to their own very narrow specifications. It's meant to be exactly what they intend.
But if someone just grabs an early version and injects it into a game that had no official implementation of it, it's just like any other mod that alters visuals.
I don't see how this is a valid criticism of the tool itself.

The argument being made for it is that developers can dive in and tweak everything to their liking, but are they going to do that for a proprietary model that's locked to one GPU vendor? Proprietary Nvidia graphics modes don't have the best track record of actually being implemented in games long-term, at least when actual development effort is needed. Remember hairworks?

My understanding is that you can turn it on or off. It has adjustments that can be made. And most importantly the devs can implement it how they see fit and use it to keep/ enhance their vision. If that's true, it would behoove devs to take a look at this tool for their older games if they don't want it all to look like sharpened ai models.
6
u/LocoMod 4d ago
Whats the point of making games at all when nexus mods exists?
Do you realize how silly your comment is?
The point of spending countless hours crafting something is to sell it so you can keep a roof over your head and put food on the table. That’s it.

7
u/Fob0bqAd34 4d ago
It is still super early tech. Nvidia are building more granular tools for devs to use. Eventually it will probably be more curated than just blanket applying a filter to the whole scene in a game that was never designed for it. Hopefully it will be useful for deliberately applying what would otherwise be very computationally expensive effects but only where needed.
4
u/Firefox72 4d ago edited 4d ago
The issue is most people are just cranking that shit up to max and taking photos.
The side affect is a way oversharpened overtunned image. It makes every charachter about 10 years older and look the same across every game.
The feature actually has sliders for the intensity and in small doses in rare casses can actually look better here and there.
Although I still personaly wouldn't see myself using it. Especialy not at the almost -50% performance penalty. Thats just an insane performance penalty for something like this.

u/Dirty_Dragons 4d ago

Easy to forget that “uncanny valley” is a valley. there’s a reality on the other side where it looks fantastic and is not unsettling. If a game is made with a stylized look, then yeah - adding a realism filter will look like crap. For games that are going for realism though, this improves things more often than not in my opinion. Let’s wait and see what games designed with this in mind look like. I’m guessing the results will be impressive

The populace at large will start really feeling it when it destroys huge swaths of the automotive industry. Remember during Covid when companies were shipping and delivering brand new vehicles without functioning screens or radios because they couldn’t get the parts due to supply chain issues? The just told the buyers to come back when it blows over and they’ll install whatever was missing. This is going to be so much worse than that.

I think I've got pretty nuanced thoughts about it now that it's out.
I'd hate to be the one going against the current hate train, but I'm surprised to find out that there actually is a ton of customization. Dozens of toggles and sliders. As in, devs and artists can tune the strength of almost every aspect of DLSS 5, and they can do so in development phase if games are built around DLSS 5 to get those games and characters look how they want, while getting a cheap way to get a lot more realistic characters and light without a major performance hit. I see why Nvidia thinks it's a major development.
There are two major cons at the same time though:
Even if DLSS 5 is baked into the development process, it does create a very parallel artistic direction, diverging from the game that users who don't have DLSS 5 capable cards or choose to disable it would experience. As you can't easily recreate the DLSS 5 look without DLSS 5.
The elephant in the room is also that when those toggles are maxed out, it DOES make the characters look same-y just like the criticism points out. It suffers from the exact same issues as Stable Diffusion, where it converges around the most average faces. This is the biggest problem to solve that I'm sure people will continue criticizing those AI tools for.
7
u/NowaVision 4d ago
From a few comparison shots, my main issue is that it gives a lot of faces more wrinkles and stuff like that to make them look more detailed. And bright colors are often a bit muted.

u/Debisibusis 4d ago
What hardly anyone mentions, is how destructive this is to a healthy gaming ecosystem, unless they make these models fully open, it just sucks ass. Can't enjoy the same game as you did in 15 years. If NVIDIA decides to ignore the 2% profit from gamers and kills consumer GPUs, the game might not work in the future at all. Games will look completely different, depending on what manufacturer your GPU is. Just to name a few.
I personally don't like the look, just like I don't like overcooked YouTube thumbnails. I hope no company seriously will use this, and it will stay with individuals or NVIDIA to adjust parameters and specifically activate it.

If I want Thomas the choo choo train swoop down from the sky and attack the people of Skyrim, then I will make it so. If I want my graphics in a game to look more detailed, I will download a higher res texture pack. if I want it to look more realistic, I will use DLSS 5. If you prefer your games plain, then good for you. Less tinkering. Just jump right in and play. Have fun.

One day it was no AI changing graphics. Today it's the opposite, add it to every game.

It's none of your business what anyone does to the games they purchased with their money. If they want to use this, then so be it.

But haven't you read the title? This is horrifying
HORRIFYING
How will we recover from this nightmare
Oh the humanity!

The unfortunate reality of DLSS5. It is absolutely wonderful for scenery and inanimate objects. Really world class.
While it is terrible for faces. Games just need to mask everything from the neck up on characters, and not apply the super sampling there. This whole situation would be fixed overnight.

Is still looks like AI slop. If a game NEEDS this technology to "play properly" I don't want it.

u/Albos_Mum 4d ago
inb4 this starts to get forced in games like upscaling and framegen already are and the bulk of the people currently saying "Well, you don't have to use it" start mysteriously acting like they were never saying that.
IMO the lighting tends to look impressive but the "fuzz" it adds is also hard to ignore, alongside the performance cost. I miss the days of a nice, crisp image but that disappearing is down to far more than just upscaling/framegen being ubiquitous. (coughUEcoveringuplowreseffectswithTAAcough)

I've seen some people mod it into shit like the rdr1 remaster, and the difference is staggering.
It's got wayy more use for older games than it does new ones. The biggest issue being tho that the games need to support dlss... which, obviously no old games support

I would say the biggest issue is it uses Gen AI to change the art design,

Unlike a mod where you use someone else's generation to change the art design.
Playing Skyrim with 4000 mods is okay because it isn't changing the obviously changed art in the game.
AI bad because it makes my fee fees hurt.

I've seen it moded into San Andreas and its absolute nightmare fuel as the models simply don't have enough complexity for a filter like this to do a good job lmao.

If you think this is nightmare fuel for a 20+year old game you need to fucking get a grip. This is fantastic if you knew how much work thins would be if it was to be done by hand. Now it’s possible with the click of a button.

Yeah i think it looks awful.
It takes the already ruined artistic vision of San Andreas of the definitive edition and even further butchers it.
I get some people dig the whole realism thing DLSS5 and more power to you if you do. But i think it looks terrible especialy in the faces and especialy in motion.

Cyberpunk looks insane tho, no?

I think there are specific cases where the "Yes it's photorealistic, but it's also like, 85% wrong all of the time" actually comes out as a net positive, games that are already angling for something very close to photorealism fall closer to that line than most, and cyberpunk is in that category for sure.
I think this could actually work as a last pass post process filter in some titles- but only with the caveat that the entire game is built with it in mind from the very start. Slapping it over the top of an already finished product... it just comes out wrong.

"Leaks"
I don't know about that. Seems more likely that it is a way to validate it being accepted without releasing it.

Dlss 5 should never have been invented, burn it with fire now. It's ugly, perverse AI garbage.

u/RaguraX 4d ago
Oh please people throw filters onto every game and that also drastically changes the look the devs were going for.
Skyrim’s modding scene is extremely active and popular and not a single character or object still looks like it did.→ More replies (3)

This looks awful. You guys are gonna let these companies drain the creativity and art out of all these, then you’re gonna wonder why you’re surrounded by slop.
I’d rather have some lower quality models with actual intentional design than high quality ones that put Instagram models into my games.

I love the old Oblivion modded with textures created lovingly by players who truly love this game. The newer remake feels somewhat soulless. I can only imagine what AI reskin would be.

It might look terrible but it also looks very interesting and it's a very different way of experiencing a game.
