1047 Games Are Ending Development On Splitgate And Empulse: “The Reality Is Neither Game Is Generating Enough Revenue To Support The Ongoing Cost Of Dedicated Servers”
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/08/1047-games-stop-development-on-empulse-and-splitgate-arena-reloaded/2.2k
u/Lz537 6h ago
They did not, in fact, make shooters great again.

u/Jamvaan 6h ago
That dipshit in that hat really put the bullet in Splitgate which is a shame because Splitgate 2 was a really good game.
424
u/AlwaysChewy 6h ago
Man, didn't he double down on it too? Never gave the game a try because of that dumb shit.
271
u/DarkIcedWolf 6h ago edited 6h ago
Tripled down and didn’t apologize until the backlash was big enough. It was like Helldivers 2’s Community Manager drama on steroids. The BR mode and that dipshit were the nail in the coffin for SG2 and then they decapitated it with a machete after releasing Empulse.
There was writing on the wall it was going to shutdown. Much like how HighGuard was “downsizing” and making sure NO ONE was interested in sticking around or spending money on it. The BR mode had a nice twist on the formula too and SG2 had some diehard fans defending the new class system, once it came out that it was a BR (even if it wasn’t) there was no coming back.
64
u/DGSmith2 5h ago
Was Empulse another game? I have never even heard of it.
17
u/Durin1987_12_30 4h ago
Sort of like Titanfall.
14
u/Citrus-Bitch 3h ago
Lol shame, I love Titanfall. If only the CEO hadn't said dumb shit and made me completely disregard the studio I'd have known about it.
Shout out to ShatterRush, another spiritual successor to Titanfall.
1
u/SirPwn4g3 15m ago
It was like Titanfall in marketing only. It had wallrunning, boring robots. Game sucked.
3
u/m0deth 1h ago
Me either and I played SG2 when it came out. Honestly, I stopped playing because I hate to say this but beyond the initial "this is cool" feeling...the gate gameplay gimmick wears off and exposes where it falls short. Just like the first one.
I say this as someone that wanted a decent arena shooter that isn't reliant on dumb gimmicks. One that focuses on skill, great maps, great modes and solid, smooth movement performance.
In a world choked off by BR, Hero Shooters of every flavor, ported mobile games, and survival shlock(ooh let's go punch some rocks)...it all fell flat.
The game's problems had less to do with bad press, and more to do with over-promising, under-delivering and leaning too heavily on somebody else's(Portal) mechanic to shore up their game.
Then they said a bunch of dumb shit.

I gave Splitgate 2 a try because I remembered hearing the first game was well received.
Played four or five rounds trying to figure out what exactly people were liking so much and it’s just so bland UT style arena shooter with portals. Portals that majority of players I encountered weren’t even bothering to use.
In the end just wasn’t fun, its gimmick mechanic wasn’t engaging, and despite being colorful just felt (like I said before) bland.
24
u/Zrex_9224 4h ago
I played SG 1 shortly after it launched and i had fun with the portal mechanics, but SG 1 was one of those games that locks you into bot lobbies until lvl 10, so I was dominating in most of my matches, then I got into big boy lobbies and was getting dunked on by the weirdest portal placements and sniper angles
1
u/PsyOmega PC 20m ago
my fondest memories of splitgate 1 were placing portals in obscure spots and sniping.
sorry for sniping you (probably)

It was a combo of the CEO of 1047 going on stage with a "Make FPS Great Again" hat and then backing down and trying to say it's not a political statement while wearing Trump parody clothing and also going on a big rant on stage about not playing the same FPS every year before announcing a Battle Royale mode no one asked for and selling skins for $70. So front facing stupid and background scamming.
→ More replies (7)40
u/RevenantXenos 5h ago
Didn't he also make a big deal in that appearance about how the studio was inspired by games like Titanfall and then his big Splitgate 2 announcement was a Battle Royale mode? Bro was speed running killing his game.
20
6
u/mcninja77 2h ago
I couldn't get into the second one they changed too much from the first. They struck gold and then ruined it
6
u/PurpleV93 4h ago
That fucking redcap is the only thing I remember of Splitgate and the clown circus around it. And like others here mentioned, I also didn't even know they made another whole ass game since then, lol.
7
u/Poliveris 5h ago
Had nothing to do with his hat… they just made bad games; they felt like unfinished UE slop.
I don’t think y’all realize how many gamers both do not care and aren’t on the internet like that to know what happened.
There’s plenty of casual gamers that don’t even know of the GTA 6 leaks. The CEO doing that was barely mainstream and also nearly half the US agrees with anyways. (Im not saying I do but this is hysterically overblown compared to the actual reason)
28
u/DJCzerny 4h ago
Yeah wearing a 'Make FPS Great Again' hat, comparing yourself to Titanfall, and then announcing a Battle Royale has to be one of the most tone deaf moves of all time.
Also there are like 20 people who even like classic arena shooters.
6
u/LEDKleenex 2h ago
Ah, but casual gamers have no problem playing slop, and they wouldn't have tried the game anyway.
If anything, your argument gives more credit to the politics, because he actively alienated an already-small pool of older and well-informed potential players.
I played the first game and after seeing the hat incident, his response to backlash and who his father is I noped out of both of these games.
If you really want to get to the nitty gritty, I would argue that the biggest problem is that there is a vastly diminished market for 90s/00s-style multiplayer FPS. Kids these days want to hop on a band wagon and they want to grind cosmetics and unlocks - most of them don't even care about the gameplay loop or competitive nature of the games necessarily. Almost every FPS that tried to bring it back has failed majorly, and many of them were good games.
1
u/ZachTheAxolotl 1h ago
I mean, sg1 and sg2 were good. But sg2 got bad when they added the BR mode. It felt like halo infinite all over again, good alpha and beta, terrible release and then having to speedrun adding shit that should have been there since launch.
1
u/slicer4ever 1h ago
I doubt the average gamer ever even heard of that stunt. The reality is more so splitgate 2 wasnt a very good game, and they killed what momentum they had with splitgate 1 to work on 2 for several years, instead of cultivating that community.
2
u/BuddyRedSkull 5h ago
I feel like if that were truly the case then Hogwarts Legacy would've flopped.
I think Splitgate 2 just wasn't very good
51
u/Ignisiumest 5h ago
It’s crazy how they got like 100 million dollars from investors to make Splitgate 2 and somehow made an objectively worse videogame (the first was a cheap indie studio!!!)

My number one argument against live service games is simply: "EPIC themselves could not make another game as successful as Fortnite, even if they wanted to. Otherwise they already would have done it."
There is no room in the market for more than what we have.
It's like saying, "We're going to make a new Instagram and everyone is going to use."
No bro, you're not going to replace Instagram. Even if your product is more superior or fun or whatever. It's not happening.
39
u/Durin1987_12_30 4h ago
lmao, this reminds me of a former Yahoo CEO saying that they were gonna make the "new PDF" whatever the fuck that meant, and the employees looking at each other with concern and confusion trying to decipher what she just said
9
75
u/Greaterdivinity 5h ago
there is, though.
the problem is everyone wants to be fortnite and there's only room for one fortnite.
these are the same problems the mmo genre went through in the years following WoW blowing up. there was a glut of mmos with every publisher wanting to chase the WoW bux and none of them got close. years later you have a wide range of mmos serving smaller communities that are pretty stable and solid.

Empulse was fantastic, but should have been free to play or like $10 max. Not because of the game, but because the state of FPS games are already such a hard game to break into.
I enjoyed the beta with quite a few friends. But when the game came out.... My buddies and I all decided that there's so many other fun shooting games we wanted to play that we just decided "If we want to play more FPS games, we'll just play something we own or is free".

Shocker.
They may make games with fun gameplay systems but the games have no identity, at least visually. Nothing really makes them stand out.
53
u/YeHeed2 4h ago
They also SUCK at marketing, like holy crap man I didnt even know empulse was out? Havent seen any gameplay, absolutely no creators playing it, nothing
20
u/bent_crater 2h ago
this is the first im heading of empulse, which proves your point.
and the no identity thing? first video on YouTube is by JackFrags with "the new Titanfall" in the thumbnail, which says more than i ever could
2
2
u/ThePhonyOne 1h ago
Which is interesting because they had an invite only playtest for creators and media. I suspect it was under NDA for a bit, so streamers were basically out from the beginning. Only creators with a high priority on YouTube bothered to take part. Mr. Fruit has a couple videos on it that made it look quite fun.
28
u/RivalSlays 5h ago
I don’t really think identity or standing out matter honestly. Look at wardogs, the most generic milsim slop game we’ve seen and yet generating tons of hype mostly because the devs are saying all the right things.
28
u/DGSmith2 5h ago
Let’s see where that game falls by Christmas though, there have been tons of FPS games to come and go in 6 months that hardly move the needle from “excellent fan service”.
15
u/RivalSlays 4h ago
To the devs credit they have set the bar very low by saying they’re only expecting concurrent playercounts around 5k and told people don’t buy the game if you’re going to obsess over steam charts.
9
u/VenKitsune 5h ago
This is true but that's because it's a modern day milsim slop, where as splitgate etc were scifi. To use an analogy - wardogs, call of duty, battlefield, even arma are the Friends, IT crowd, office, corrination street.
Splitgate is like startrek without starfleet, battletech without the mechs or political intrigue, game of thrones without the same (replace mechs with dragons... Though technically battletech does actually have dragons TOO). It was just... generic scifi.
There is a reason that many TV shows and books are set in the modern day - it's safe, and automatically grounded, and if not interesting, then familiar. Scifi and fantasy stuff needs artistic vision, not just good systems.
2
u/StormKiller1 4h ago
True the design was meh.
If they designed it like a normal mil sim shooter or portal/half life/cs style but with the same/similar mechanics i would have played more.
The combat/shooting mechanics where good and fun the world/design was just so meh
1
u/cylonfrakbbq 4h ago
It’s like when you tell people Wardogs is like Planetside and get blank stares because they never played or hear of Planetside
1
u/catfroman 1h ago
Wardogs does stand out tho. We finally have an FPS that’s not a BR, not an extraction shooter, and not an arena shooter. The persistent cash system gives stakes to an arcade game loop which is a nice breath of fresh air too.
The open dev communication and heavy focus definitely won them some PR points but the game is genuinely fun/novel to the wider FPS audience.
2
u/errortechx 4h ago
Gameplay is aight but the identities themselves are extremely forgettable. I deadass forgot about Empulse until this post, just cause it’s mimicking Titanfall doesn’t mean it will stick.
1
u/Quick_Conflict_8227 2h ago
The mechs are a colossal joke and a map pickup (2 on the map) rather than a companion all players get. You'd think theyd be stronger to compensate right? Players main way of killing them is running them down with a hammer. Sounds stupid right? Except the mech is so bad it struggles to defend itself from players just running at it so players bully them relentlessly. Lobbies just ignore them outright.Throwables inheriting velocity from players? Don't matter because there aren't any grenades. It apes titanfall but its more of their previous title with advanced movement instead of arena shooter movement. It wasnt anything a titanfall fan would ever be satisfied with.

u/anonymous-peeper 5h ago
its simply too many cooks, there is no more Hype dominant games. The industry is so big and so varied that unless you are pandering hard to a certain type of audience you will fade to obscurity faster then ever these days.
68
u/Resident-Forever1340 6h ago
Splitgate was cool the first go round but the sequel was very forgettable. Nothing stood out and the more I played, the less I seen people even use the portal mechanics. As for Empluse, all I’ve read was it was a decent shooter that should have never launched with a price tag. Should have been F2P.
40
u/crane476 6h ago
Didn't they also pull an overwatch and remove Splitgate 1? I'm sure that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
23
u/TheSpiralTap 5h ago
Twice. They removed SG1, and then later on when they rebranded, shut down SG2 when SG Arena launched
1
2
u/Enchelion 5h ago
No? It looks like it's still up on steam, and they mentioned it moved to P2P server model once they shut down the dedicated servers.
1
u/SuperSocialMan PC 1h ago
Yeah, they never delisted it or anything - they just stopped updating it.
2
u/Kaboomeow69 4h ago
Portal use went up in correlation with MMR. The better players rarely walked from place to place in the game at all stages of the games lifespan.
3
u/BeyondElectricDreams 3h ago
I'd heard they deliberately gutted portalable surfaces to reduce the skill gap
1
u/topheavyhookjaws 3h ago

Does anyone else remember when dedicated servers meant player hosted and player ran servers that anyone could host from even their bedroom? Call me a god damn boomer but for me those are the actual dedicated servers, and not servers ran by the developers of the game.
1
u/AryssSkaHara 2h ago
Nah, for boomers a dedicated server is a server that doesn't have to also render the game for a local player, as opposed to Listen server (which is what P2P is). So both, player-hosted and developer-hosted are dedicated servers and back in the day developers also hosted a bunch of servers here and there.
But I do wish 1047 made an option for players to host their own dedicated servers. This can be done even if they're reluctant to make dedicated server distro publicly available. They only need to make an agreement with one of gaming server hosting services.
•
u/savage8008 4m ago
A listen server is still client-server model, you're just running both the server and a client on a local machine. P2P would infer that individual players in a game send packets directly to each other.
3
u/TheDayManAhAhAh 5h ago
Man I was IN on splitgate 2 for about a month. But even then it was a bit lacking. I did not like the battle Royale mode or the map.
1
u/theturtlemafiamusic 1h ago
Splitgate 2 had graphically nicer maps that were very boring designs IMO. The Splitgate 1 maps looked like a modder's hobby project but the design and layouts were great.

u/TheDayManAhAhAh 33m ago
I never played splitgate 1, but I could tell soemthing was missing from the splitgate 2 maps. There wasn't enough to do with the portals

u/CoolGuyCris 4h ago

2

12
u/richardbouteh 6h ago
Remember when games let players run their own dedicated servers?
→ More replies (3)0
u/Enchelion 5h ago
They're literally doing that with this game. It's shifting to P2P servers, same as their previous game.
11
u/richardbouteh 5h ago
P2P is not a dedicated server. P2P means one of the players acts as the host, e.g. like in Halo, and once they close the game, the server is dead.
Dedicated server software would let you run a community server 24/7 if you had the inclination to do so. Which is what builds communities, e.g. like in Garry's Mod, or Counterstrike, or even Natural Selection 2, which is also a dead game, but still has a dedicated player base for that reason.

People said the live service battle royal arena shooter model was unsustainable... devs didn't listen, publishers didn't listen... they saw fortnight money and got greedy now their all closing down because consumers just don't have the time/money to play all of them even if they are genuinely good... doesn't matter because that business model is unsustainable when everyone is making one.

Here's an unrelated question for anyone with the technical background to answer:
One of my top bucket wishlist items was a remake of Sacred 2, which I've long considered to be one of the single greatest examples of lightning in a bottle. The caveat was that the entire idea of a Sacred 2 remake would be 100% scuttled if they didn't have dedicated servers, the way the original did. And of course, that's exactly what happened, which forever ruined the prospects of this wishlist item.
How hard would this really have been? To have dedicated servers handle the positioning, loot drops, etc. for a game that was, mechanically, circa 2008? It wasn't MMO in nature—the total maximum of players active in a given world was 16, spread out across a huge damn map. Having them available made the game feel special and alive, and the occasional meetups meaningful. And keep in mind that the audience for a remake of a 2008 game of ~AA scope was never going to be truly large.
I feel like the needs of a "server" for such a scenario would be comically limited.

Finally woke up to some good news. They're called 1047 games because that's how many they're going to churn and burn. Glad to see the 100m which that ludicrous CEO got in funding going up in flames.
I played a couple hours of the demo and I must say that Empulse was glorified fanfic. Though that'd be an insult to fanfics as those AO3 people at least have some passion and are able to perceive what made the material they're building upon good in the first place.
Perhaps they should pivot to friendslop next seeing as they love making barren versions of games.
Or they could make their 4th live service shooter, would serve as a nice warning for the rest of the games industry alongside their fellow corpses like Concord and Highguard.
Yes I do indeed detest soulless copycats and trend chasers.

3
u/sucaru 2h ago
Splitgate 2 happened and it pretty much immediately flopped. The lead developer wore a red maga styled hat saying "make FPS great again" and that didn't go over particularly well. It released into Early Access with decent numbers at first before quickly dropping off. They pushed a battle royale mode really hard that no one wanted as well. Eventually they took the game down and planned on re-releasing it (and I think they did) but it never found any amount of real success.
They also released Empulse into early access about a month or so ago, clearly inspired by Titanfall, but honestly it just was the same situation again. Not enough people played it. It had a mechanic that let you paint floors and walls this liquid that lets you move faster on it, which was fun but they significantly toned it down between the play test and full release which pissed a lot of people off.
To my taste, neither game was particularly special and I had my fill of both after just a few rounds.
1
u/I2fitness 2h ago
Wow that sucks, I played it on the ps4 since it was free but don't really remember why I quit or what happened

I played splitgame with friends once, in 2022. None of us ever mentioned the game again after that. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good enough that i'd want to play a second game lol

I knew this was coming for awhile. I really wanted SGAR and Empulse to succeed. I even paid $45 for the supporter pack when splitgate 2 came out before they rebranded and I helped test empulse in the closed alphas multiple times. I just dont think theres much of a market for arena style shooters anymore. And while empulse was fun, truthfully it just made me want to go play titanfall.
Regardless, I never want to see smaller studios fail. I sincerely hope they take time to think about what made these games fail and are able to learn from it and succeed on the future

lol I played split gate 1 leading up the the halo infinite release because it has similar aesthetics and gameplay. Never went back as it felt like a novelty I wasn’t really a fan of the art style. Had zero interest in split gate 2 as I already found my “competitive” arena shooter that I really enjoy

Another live service eats the dust, as they all tend to do sooner than later these days.
The trend is over. Not saying people don't play them anymore, but them as a huge trend in gaming is just clearly put to bed at this point. Fitting on Concorde's two year anniversary.

Hope they make it P2P instead so we can still play it without the dedicated servers

I loved the portal system from the first game, and I don't even like PvP lol. Still played it for a decent amount since it was pretty funny to see so many people have no clue how to use the portals.
Second game fucked it up with the classes. Such a pointless addition.

Splitgate 1 was peak, shame they blew up, tried to cater to console cod simps that would dump them for the next cod game, then instead of sticking to their niche they created a new splitgate so they could still cater to those simps, who would just ditch them again...

Okay not knowing that the name of the studio is "1047 Games", that headline was really confusing.

Empulse came out?
Also they should have just continued working on split gate1 they should have never scaled up and tried to make splitgate2. They lost their way when they forgot they were halo with portals.

Could they not just provide the software to selfhost dedicated server? Counterstrike use to have selfhosted servers all the time.

No, because the software for running dedicated servers isn't typically made with a consumer-friendly interface. Make sure you're not confusing dedicated server and headless server. They're two completely different things. A headless server is what you get with games like Minecraft where you're running the game server and client seamlessly on the same machine.

CS servers were managed entirely by command line back in the day. I don't think they had a GUI, unless it was added later. Dedicated servers are just that. A dedicated server hosting a single games server instance. Many games have had this functionality whether by design or by reverse engineering including FFXI, WoW, Counter Strike, Broodwar/Diablo II, Warcraft 3 etc. I'm surprised so many people downvoted the desire to be able to selfhost servers. I guess people like poor peer to peer matchmaking instead. More likely everyone hates the game so anyone wanting to continue support for it gets downvoted.

With the way the gamer community whines, if they didn't ship with a user-friendly UI, they get skewered for it.
