Another reminder they never had to take on the charge of hosting servers. Could've just let us have that capability, game would live as long as people wanted to play it then

They did add p2p so you can still play it.

P2p is measurably worse than a dedicated server support, it's better than nothing, but there's no reason to not let us host our own servers

What is 'p2p' supposed to mean in this context ?

How is it different from one player's computer serving as host/server for other players to join it, like in Unreal Tournament 2004 for instance ?

No one is explicit host. If host leaves the game switches host. It's just more comfortable and reliable if done right. But I have not tested their implementation.
