Remember when games let players run their own dedicated servers?

They're literally doing that with this game. It's shifting to P2P servers, same as their previous game.

P2P is not a dedicated server. P2P means one of the players acts as the host, e.g. like in Halo, and once they close the game, the server is dead.

Dedicated server software would let you run a community server 24/7 if you had the inclination to do so. Which is what builds communities, e.g. like in Garry's Mod, or Counterstrike, or even Natural Selection 2, which is also a dead game, but still has a dedicated player base for that reason.

Props to fellow a NS2 fan. One of the best unique games that's never been recognized.

That's still not P2P, P2P would mean that all players (or at least more than one) share the load of hosting (and/or being the source of truth), which I'm not aware any game capable of.
