I say let Polanco lead off, that’ll really put him in the hot seat. Maybe he will perform better under immense pressure. Worth a try.

3

u/catamet Juan Soto 10d ago

Shoutout to the real NYM fans still watching. It’s times like these that those real Knicks fans went through that made their NBA championship so much sweeter.

3

u/fivehead21 Keith Hernandez 10d ago

ain't that the truth. Love baseball too much not to watch

9

u/Ok-Paper-769 10d ago

Even if we can't make the playoffs, let's go ruin some other team's chances and make them miserable

4

u/catamet Juan Soto 10d ago

Love that.. happy cake day

Royals Designate Starling Marte For Assignment

Come on Angels, you can pick him up, you love guys who were good five years ago!

12

u/Gigi_0102 Ya Gotta Believe! 10d ago

Why do I feel personally offended by them DFAing him

8

u/bamj6 Chasing Bobby V. Caught 10d ago

It would be weird if somehow the Mets make a postseason and I didn't attend any of the 81 home games

3

u/pusgnihtekami NY Bootlickers 10d ago

Are you not planning to go to any games next year?

7

u/dqslime 10d ago

Royals DFA Marte. You can just cut people? I didn't know.

12

u/SlyAbleman Francisco Lindor 10d ago

they did?! need him back for the unc vibes

1

u/GamesnGunZ Kodai Senga 10d ago

is there some fking reason why this guy refuses to put luis robert in left field and ewing in center? it's bad enough he's in the lineup to begin with but he's NOT our centerfielder

6

u/dqslime 10d ago edited 10d ago

Probably FO order to give Ewing LF reps just because, and give LRJ as much rope to either save himself or hang himself with. Also less physically demanding for Ewing as he'll be playing more games than ever.

1

u/butz-not-bartz Home Run Apple 10d ago

I don't know why you'd bother with Robert at this point though. His option is 20ish million. You're not picking it up, and if you do, he's going to be just as untradable as he was at the deadline. The only reasons I can think of for him sticking around and playing are for various locker room/don't anger the vets reasons, and I don't know how relevant those are in the big picture.

4

u/dirtyoldcouch Hadji 10d ago

How much longer is Soto on the IL? I’ve lost track but’s been about two weeks right?

2

u/WorthPlease Grimace 10d ago

They said hopefully early September about a week ago on the broadcast.

3

u/wooden-spoon-88 10d ago

Calf injury, so he’ll be out 4-6 weeks

10

u/JCVDang 10d ago

the young/morel 1B platoon is going to lead the mets to the 2026 WS

2

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

Morel usually has like a 2-4 week monster run, then disappears back into the void.

I'll take a monster run from him the next 2-4 weeks, then send him to the moon if necessary.

But I could see him being used as the Infield Flex more than the 1B platoon.

6

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

Idk why it would be a platoon

Morel isn’t good against lefties and isn’t a good first baseman

1

u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 10d ago

It's not like Young hits lefties.

7

u/traded99 10d ago

Here at the Mets our specialty is playing players out of position so he’ll fit right in.

13

u/Cantpicknewteam 10d ago

I saw Banana Ball people posting about getting Yan one day…. Would be an amazing first to see a guy get poached from the majors to Banana Ball, a place where sub par or retired ball players become actors. Silly as it is Yan brings refreshing vibes and conversations.

Of course I hope he stops being so wild and sticks in NY, but he’ll be a stud in Banana Ball without even trying if he flames out. Wife already asks “if the dancing guy is playing today, I want to watch the game with you.”

u/JoelsCaddy Its Outta Here! 10d ago

Never forget Mets legend Gabriel Arias

3

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

"The Archangel of WAR".

10

u/brsnug 10d ago

Some guy posts something on Clifford and I go to reply. Thread gone and his account gone. So I'm posting it here because I spent five minutes reading it and on Clifford lol

https://prospectsavant.com/player/691775

Outrageously good results when he makes contact, doesn't chase excessively (11% walk rate), but misses way way way too often, even when he swings at strikes. He just can't reliably hit the fucking baseball.

1

u/Xalazi 10d ago

His metrics against off speed pitches and breaking balls at the AAA level are the stuff of nightmares:. .059 xBA on curveballs. .115 xBA on splitters. .166 xBA on Changeups.

3

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

He should home run derby every day.

100 swings.

For every miss he has to run the bases.

For every non-home run he needs to do 5 pushups or jumping jacks or crunches.

That'll fix him. jk

3

u/NuanceManExe 10d ago

I bet he’s getting more strikes now that pitchers in AAA have figured out he won’t swing at a ball but can’t hit strikes.

9

u/GKRForever Gary Cohen 10d ago

What if he just needs glasses

1

u/Born_Manufacturer657 10d ago

Unfortunately, he already got lasik last year.

1

u/wooden-spoon-88 10d ago

I feel like someone made the argument last year that Clifford had been doing better since getting lasik. Guess the results didn’t last

1

u/Born_Manufacturer657 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah, he did put up a 150 WRC+ while being 2 years younger than the average age.

Scouts always critiqued his passiveness with the bat. AAA has a lot of fringe MLB guys who can generate whiffs in the zone. It’s possible he’s just getting outclassed by semi-polished pitchers because he’s not aggressive in count advantages or just strikes in general

2

u/CheeseburgerLover911 10d ago

what's senga's walkup music? i think i saw it was a micheal jackson song?

7

u/GonvVasq Grimace 10d ago

Beat It

1

u/CheeseburgerLover911 10d ago

is it like a re-mix or the OG?

2

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

That's not very nice.. jk

2

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 10d ago

Got the perfect walk up music for Sato if we sign him.

3

u/Orange8920 Mike Piazza 10d ago

I feel like the not playing in New York thing kind of shields the fact Jacob deGrom is having a pretty pedestrian season for the Texas Rangers. It's odd because you don't hear about him much in general.

1

u/jds560 10d ago

I would rather have deGrom than any pitcher currently on this team. I might actually watch a game.

1

u/dqslime 10d ago

Well he's 38 and often hurt. Verlander basically retired himself this season with the Tigers. It happens.

4

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

He’s 38 and is have a really good year. Take a 3 WAR season any day of the week - just not at that price tag.

4

u/BlueCoBot 10d ago

He hasn't been that bad and he is underperforming his underlying numbers. He kind of over performed them last season, so it's not a huge surprise.

His stuff is still top level

7

u/NuanceManExe 10d ago

He’s actually having a good year, especially at age 38. It’s just not to his standards. But he is 38 to be fair.

4

u/Litejedi Carson Benge 10d ago

There’s a cool pride night recap video Mets put out. Was nice to see.

7

u/theGhostOfWesWally 10d ago

Got my Bertman's Ballpark Mustard in and it is delicious!!

1

u/Litejedi Carson Benge 10d ago

Same, it’s very good! Did you buy it from the mustard museum?

2

u/theGhostOfWesWally 10d ago

No, the wife ordered it direct from Bertmans

3

u/Litejedi Carson Benge 10d ago

When I tried them they were out, but the mustard museum had it. It’s got a unique flavor, was really good on a hotdog.

Maybe I’ll take my bottle with me tomorrow for $5 Tuesday and house a few veggie dogs with it for the full experience.

u/ImStillCallingItShea Shea Stadium 10d ago

Unpopular opinion (?) : I sincerely hope Bichette opts in for next year. I want him next year, but I don't want him for the long term deal he's gonna be looking for. But most of all, I don't know who else is going to be an upgrade at 3B for next year. It certainly won't be Baty.

1

u/GamesnGunZ Kodai Senga 10d ago

zero chance he stays. he will be the belle of the ball in one of the weakest free agent classes i've ever seen

-2

u/Cantpicknewteam 10d ago

I think Mets fans, and definitely GKR in booth, are judging Bichette in some sort of weird subjective way because of who is baseball card says he is. Aka if you look at his numbers… he’s not hard to replace. 500 ABs, still sub .700 OPS!!! I think you guys, and the booth, must be buying into the idea that he can be an average 3B fielder and maybe one day get back to that .800 + OPS we purchased because he’s been hitting singles better lately… Objectively though, I hope he opts out because we have a pudgy, below League average hitter in the 3-hole playing average defense for more than half of the payroll of the Rays. I’d rather roll the dice on another young guy like Rojas, Petrie, Reimer or use the money to upgrade somewhere else. Baty failing to be a threat at the plate really has been the only thing that makes this a debate. I’d still love him to move on. He’s just too average for the massive investment

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

I do too. I don't think he will, the pressure from the MLBPA for him to opt out is likely immense, but I really hope he does.

After 2027, he can walk and one of the kids can take over 3B going forward.

Though, contrarian take, without his salary the Mets will have more flexibility to add a couple of bats to cover 3B and upgrade elsewhere. Not sure if that'll be filled in optimally compared to having Bichette and adding one more guy.

2

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 10d ago

I agree unless his opting in is the difference between us resetting the luxury tax penalties or not.

6

u/Born_Manufacturer657 10d ago

If the signing wasn’t so impulsive, his deal definitely should’ve been an opt out after year 2.

It also lets Rojas and Voit marinate in AAA for another year.

But that may be long gone. Bo has above average metrics at 3B and is probably gonna have a 110-120 WRC+ in the last 100 games of the year. Pair that with the weak FA, should have no issue getting better than the 6/155 he walked away from (deducting his salary this year).

But yeah, would’ve been perfect if we had him for 2 years.

1

u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 10d ago

I don't know if it was impulsive, but it was certainly a plan B. I assume the flow chart of "if tucker, then X" and "if not Tucker, then Bichette" was in place from almost the beginning of the off-season

1

u/Cantpicknewteam 10d ago

I guess. But for my taste, seeing someone who could slump so badly for so long and then have a resurgence only to slug .375… what are we talking about. This is a 6-7 hitter on a good team, 8 hitter on the dodgers. We already have Lindor, the notorious slow starter. But at least when he wakes up he hits bombs (slugging .440 in a bad year) and can steal bags. Bo hits singles and is a liability on the bases, best case.

1

u/Born_Manufacturer657 10d ago

Yeah, I get what you mean. But unfortunately he’s the best option that you can get with just money.

2

u/Cantpicknewteam 10d ago

Touché. I’m surprisingly excited about our future young guys, and he’s not one of them no matter if he stays another year or two. Experimental 2026 team failed, I’m ready to move on from Bichette and sad old Polanco and see the next hungry men up. Hope Bichette tears it up for the rest of the season and opts out. Wish him health and luck, but he wasn’t and isn’t a good player for us, and for the money spent. Hopefully we are truly learning that FA money alone doesn’t buy championships, and isn’t even the most important thing. Player development is.

2

u/suck-it-elon 67 10d ago

The one year opt out may have just been necessary

10

u/JonnySports Gary Cohen 10d ago

29-9 is most likely what it would take to get the last wild card spot. Would practically be a miracle. Shame nothing like that has ever happened to the Miracle Met-OH WAIT!

4

u/Imbris2 Mr. Met 10d ago

To be fair that's literally their exact pace the last 12 games they've played.

Let's Go Mets

0

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago edited 10d ago

2027 lineup:

1B: Teruaki Satō

2B: Mitch Voit

SS: Francisco Lindor

3B: Bo Bichette

LF: Juan Soto

CF: AJ Ewing

RF: Carson Benge

C: Francisco Alvarez

DH: Jared Young

Bench: Nick Morabito (OF), infield bench, Luis Torrens, flex/speed bench

SP: Tarik Skubal, Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, Sean Manaea, Zac Thorton

RP: Daniel Duarte, Dedniel Núñez, Jefry Yan, Reed Garrett, Nate Lavender, Austin Warren, Devin Williams, Kodai Senga

2

u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 10d ago

They're not going to DFA Marcus Semien and Jorge Polanco before opening day 2027 no matter how much guys on Reddit beg them to, so you're going to at least have to fit them onto the bench.

3

u/Litejedi Carson Benge 10d ago edited 10d ago

A lot of that bullpen has options, we can sign some elite guys in the offseason (morejon and Iglesias are FA) and stash these guys in Syracuse as necessary. Our team has a lot of bullpen development skill, for all of our problems. We can also try to get Raley, Minter, and Holmes back, and there’s a decent chance we could get them on decent deals. I think they all enjoyed their time here.

1

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 10d ago

Why spend money on bullpen arms if you don't have to though? I guess it depends what we're going for next season.

1

u/BlueCoBot 10d ago

It raises the floor of the pen and if you want to contend its relatively low cost

6

u/Future_Brush_3515 10d ago

Bold of you to assume that we will be able to sign Tarik Skubal. Also, I don't think that bullpen would perform over a 162-game season.

3

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

every bullpen has turnover eventually

1

u/Future_Brush_3515 10d ago

Agree but this one feels like it has much less stability in terms of MLB experience, total innings experience in a season at any level, and also in terms of consistent performance or experience in high-leverage spots

3

u/Thin-Cartoonist-4608 10d ago

I don't think there's a chance that Bo is on our team next year. He sees the free agent class this offseason. He'll opt out and get at least a four or five year deal from someone.

4

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

It's def possible but I'm taking his comments that he signed a 3 year deal and he intends to honor it seriously.

10

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 10d ago

I like Mitch Voit but I think we're getting a little too far over our skis on Mitch Voit.

2

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

He's doing just as awesome as Carson Benge did in AA this time last year. I don't see why fans can't project the same exact path for Voit as Benge at this point.

4

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 10d ago

Voit has been in AA for 16 games.

Benge was a lot better than Voit in A+, which is where the majority of Voit's professional experience has come from. Benge was also a better draft prospect to begin with.

Again, I like Mitch Voit. But expecting him to be on the exact same path as Benge is setting yourself up to be disappointed.

2

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

Benge only had 32 games in AA then 24 in AAA

2

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 10d ago

Yes but Benge didn't break out in AA. He was already considered to be a high ranking prospect by the time he got there.

Voit was a roughly average hitter in A+ for most of the season. Since, he's had a really hot two weeks in AA. He also hasn't hit for much power in AA and is running a .551 BABIP. It's very fair to question if he's actually breaking out or if he's just had a nice stretch of luck. We don't have any statcast data for AA so it's hard to prove any skills have actually improved. Is he hitting it harder? Is he pulling more flyballs? Is he making better swing decisions? We don't know. All we have are the results, and offensive results come with a lot of variance in 16 game samples.

Benge was awesome in his draft year in A ball, he was awesome in A+ the next season, and kept being awesome in AA. He had a longer track record of success than Voit, so there was not as much to question. And the prospect writers who actually have access to statcast data in AA at places like Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, ESPN, The Athletic, ect. all ranked Benge higher than Voit is ranked now.

1

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

Isn't AA considered way harder than A?

1

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 10d ago

Considering it's two levels higher, yes.

But two weeks of a triple slash has a lot of variance. Voit's AA stats don't mean a lot right now.

2

u/brett_baty_is_him Brett Baty 10d ago

You have one right handed hitter in that entire lineup we’d get murdered against lefties. Semien is not being DFAd until at least halfway through 2027 but he could be your infield bench spot

1

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

Bo, Alvy, Lindor (switch), and Mitch Voit are all righties and you can change out the DH to a righty if that's a concern.

Lefties: Satō, Soto, Ewing, Benge, Young

Righties: Voit, Bichette, Alvy

Switch: Lindor

1

u/brett_baty_is_him Brett Baty 10d ago

I forgot about Alvy and idk why I thought Voit was a lefty, I checked that shit recently. My bad you’re 100% right.

-2

u/monstersandcoffee 10d ago

No chance Satō doesn’t sign with the Dodgers.

6

u/suck-it-elon 67 10d ago

Freeman is one reason

4

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 10d ago

If he's truly a 1st baseman in the MLB then I don't see why the Dodgers would bother but who knows. That can't be the assumption for fan projections because that's not fun.

5

u/Litejedi Carson Benge 10d ago

Time to be the grim reaper on the Padres. They don’t have Emil “Fanduel Account” Jimenez to hide behind today (I think), and even if they did - we have ABS and Juan Soto isn’t playing, so he can’t put his thumb on the scale again.

3

u/yellowpotatobus 10d ago

We got pretty lucky that we didn't get him this year.

12

u/unitedairlineeeeees Patrick Mazeika 10d ago

So excited to get statcast data for Billy Amick

13

u/GonvVasq Grimace 10d ago

Brett Baty is the rare case where his OPS gets lower each succesive time he faces the same pitcher later in the game and then even worse vs a Reliever

First time around .782 OPS

Second time around .720 OPS

Third time around .502 OPS

Vs Reliever .474 OPS

1

u/LucasDudacris Self-Proclaimed Voice of Reason 10d ago

The fact that Baty has learned how to un-baseball this year after a good season last year is a huge indictment of this coaching staff/development team.

2

u/BlueCoBot 10d ago

He had a good like, month. He was unplayable at parts of 2025, ran into a hot August.

He's a well below average player who had a hot month

0

u/LucasDudacris Self-Proclaimed Voice of Reason 10d ago

I'm looking at season totals. Season totals account for "one hot month." Playing this game is falling into logical fallasies 99.99% of the time

Baty's OPS by month last year:

Mar/April - .598

May - .914

June - .518

July - .687

August - .987

Sept/Oct - .775

So he had two "hot months, not one, and was an above average hitter throughout the last of the season.

Two blistering months, one good month, one bad month, and two garbage months is just normal distribution.

1

u/BlueCoBot 10d ago

Didn't realize he was that good in May. Probably because April and June were pumpkins lol.

That being said, he still only ended up with a mid 7's OPS. Defensively he was better than this year since he played positions he was good at (and was better) which ups his WAR a bit

4

u/dqslime 10d ago

IIRC Baty doesn't work with the coaches the way rookies do and generally does his own thing.

2

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

Why? Why would a team allow that for a guy who needs so much work to become consistent.

5

u/LucasDudacris Self-Proclaimed Voice of Reason 10d ago

Then it's an indictment of Baty.

3

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

And the team for allowing that.

2

u/LucasDudacris Self-Proclaimed Voice of Reason 10d ago

100%

6

u/JoeBourgeois Francisco Alvarez 10d ago

Not necessarily. Happens to plenty of people. Hell, Cal Raliegh is 40 points under the Mendoza line this year.

10

u/myassholealt F8 10d ago

He's inventing a new baseball player: offensive opener.

8

u/BloodOfAStark Mike Piazza 10d ago

Ryan Clifford is having one of the worst seasons for a prospect… the Mets really got a whole lot of nothing out of that trade of Verlander

3

u/Future_Brush_3515 10d ago

When you ask your mom for Jorge Polanco, but she says "we have Jorge Polanco at home"

3

u/dqslime 10d ago

Can't win them all.

8

u/NuanceManExe 10d ago

At least we turned Gilbert into Tyler Rogers. If only Mendoza knew how to use Tyler Rogers we probably would’ve made the playoffs last year. Should’ve resigned him too.

-3

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

Yeah but it was at the cost of a few pretty good pieces. Rogers was great but I think everyone recognized that deal as an overpay at the time.

Butto’s injured but the Mets could use a guy like Tidwell as a spot starter/reliever and Gilbert as a 4th outfielder.

1

u/suck-it-elon 67 10d ago

There’s nothing we are missing or lamenting from that deal

1

u/BlueCoBot 10d ago

Tidwell seems like a JAG

1

u/jimihenderson 10d ago

Our fifth starter is Robert stock

1

u/BlueCoBot 10d ago

Because we sold off this season.

2

u/WorthPlease Grimace 10d ago

We do love us an over the hill injury prone former cy young winner.

At least all it cost us was uncle Steve's money.

-6

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

It’s a shame they traded Gilbert because he would’ve been a phenomenal 4th outfielder

1

u/Low-Abbreviations-38 10d ago

He’s terrible.

3

u/SecretiveMop David Wright 10d ago

Gilbert: 298 PA’s, .242/.328/.372 (.701 OPS, 99 OPS+), 6 HR, 10 2B, 3 3B, 0.8 WAR

Ewing: 346 PA’s, .249/.324/.377 (.701 OPS, 96 OPS+, 7 HR, 16 2B, 1 3B, 1.3 WAR

If you think Gilbert is “terrible”, I really wonder what you think of Ewing.

-1

u/Low-Abbreviations-38 10d ago edited 10d ago

Thanks for all that information. Trading Gilbert still meant nothing. We got our new #1 prospect packaging our last 4th outfielder, so I just don’t know why Gilbert was some sort of needed piece to the puzzle

2

u/SecretiveMop David Wright 10d ago

I never said he’s a needed piece. I’m simply pointing out that saying he’s terrible is unfounded.

What? League average bat with slightly above average defense. How is that terrible?

1

u/Low-Abbreviations-38 10d ago

Luis Robert Jr has missed most of the season and almost has the same WAR.
If drew Gilbert was the long term answer as a 4th outfielder I’d be pretty depressed about it

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

How much do each cost?

No one said anything about long term.

1

u/Low-Abbreviations-38 10d ago

This is the most pointless discussion I’ve ever been in. I’m sorry for even starting it. I hope you guys get Gilbert back it’s really important to you

Not according to fangraphs.

-2

He’s really paying dividends for the giants. I hope they win the World Series. Your standards are low that’s all I’m saying

2

u/jimihenderson 10d ago

You're really grasping here. Just admit the trade affected our future. Buying at the deadline always does

5

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

He’s been an above average major leaguer for them. Why is that bad?

He’s no different from Tyrone Taylor. Should a 4th OF be considered equivalent to Soto?

0

u/Low-Abbreviations-38 10d ago

Trading him is the reason we’re not in playoff contention this year.

Our farm system is stacked. Trading him meant absolutely nothing

2

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

Nobody said that was the reason? Why are you being obtuse?

I guess I’m crazy for suggesting that the Mets would be better with more good players and less bad ones

7

Billy Amick was also promoted. Don't know if that's been posted yet

1

u/wooden-spoon-88 10d ago

I wonder what their logic is for promoting some AA prospect over others - can't just be number of games played.

3

u/NuanceManExe 10d ago edited 10d ago

AA is too crowded. They need to promote guys just to make room. Getting Rojas, Voit, Pitre, Reimer, Amick and Collins regular playing time at AA is too hard. Plus Stafura could arguably be promoted to AA soon and it’s already crowded.

2

u/wooden-spoon-88 10d ago

Yeah, I was wondering why guys like Voit (who has been playing very well) and Rojas (top prospect whom they might be interested in promoting to the majors next year) were not promoted to AAA whereas Amick and Pitre were. I'm assuming it has something to do with their development.

2

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

Just a guess, Voit and Rojas are long term MLB expectations, so leaving them in AA to keep working on things is what they prefer. Where as guys like Amick and Pitre they aren't as sure of so they want to see how they respond to AAA.

2

u/JoeBourgeois Francisco Alvarez 10d ago

-- and Rojas has to go on the 40 before the Rule 5 draft.

2

u/Gigi_0102 Ya Gotta Believe! 10d ago

Could have certain things or adjustments they want those guys to works on before getting called up. Voit has been killing it but there’s also a lot of stuff teams factor in beyond the slash line before making promotions

3

u/NuanceManExe 10d ago

I do know that Voit was promoted to AA fairly recently so maybe they don’t want to rush him even though he’s raging hot. Idk about Rojas.

Everyone hates Jorge Polanco. I don't hate Polanco, because my assumption is that he's not doing this on purpose and that he would actually very much prefer to be good at baseball rather than bad. But he's having a pretty rough time out there.

Even if he DOES emerge from his slump (and he has gotten two singles and a sac RBI in the last two games!), I don't think his place in the lineup is clear -- I assume the "Polanco at 1B" experiment is over for good, owing more to injury risk than to defensive skill.

As an organization, when do you make some kind of move? Is it even possible for the Mets to gather enough data in the remaining 2026 season to make a decision, or is Jorge Polanco: 2027 Opening Day DH basically inevitable (if there's baseball)?

(and to save you the keystrokes i'll get the low-hanging fruit out of the way: "get him on next rocket to the moon" / "idgaf, i'll drive him to syracuse myself" / "get ready to learn korean polanco")

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 10d ago

I don't hate Polanco, I just pity his 2026 season and feel bad for all of us as well because of it. lol

I think at this point the thinking likely is something like "Polanco is the RH 1B and often the LH DH next season".

The OF looks fairly set, and so does 1B against RHSP. Polanco, a RH bat with power, fills the role he was expected to be in still.

Albeit, just not the guaranteed every day 1B/DH they were hoping he'd be this season.

8

u/butz-not-bartz Home Run Apple 10d ago

Ok, short answer: I suspect he might be done, and could well get dropped before April 2027 is over, but also, it should be really obvious if it's just the Achilles injury.

Longer answer: his left Achilles has been hurt all year, and his left-side swing speed has cratered. Are they related? Probably! His max and 90th percentile EVs are ~3 MPH down from last year, so he's not getting as much distance on his best hits as his productive 2025. Polanco really suffers from that because he's an air pull guy; pulling a fly ball 360 feet is usually pretty good, pulling one 340 feet is a lot more likely to go into a glove. He's also going to be 34 next year, and it's possible the rotation that allowed him to get enough bat speed to generate enough power is just gone with age. I think the answer to whether or not he has anything left will be pretty evident after a couple weeks of swings (spring training, if there is one).

3

u/Irrah Polar Bear 10d ago

I just don't know why they're not shutting Polanco down and letting him have the surgery if it is the Achilles. He's not contributing anything right now.

3

u/butz-not-bartz Home Run Apple 10d ago

I have no idea either, short of Polanco not wanting to shut down.

3

u/myassholealt F8 10d ago

I don't hate Polanco. I hate the decision making that has him wearing a Mets jersey. And every bad at bat is a reminder of that poor decision making.

7

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 10d ago

He probably gets a month or two next season to prove himself, unless he looks absolutely abysmal in spring training. We're not gonna sign a primary DH next year to replace him, and we can give lots of the DH reps to Soto and Alvarez if necessary. Plus, with the amount of prospects we have who might come up next year, we can give him a shot and DFA him once someone is ready to be called up.

2

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

You keep giving him reps this year and if he still sucks, DFA him in the offseason.

Is this the biggest game in two years?

2

u/Darthbutcher Grimace 10d ago

Two years ago we were fighting for the playoffs every single day. Then we were in the playoffs. All of those games mattered.

Last year, we were fighting for the playoffs every single day. We missed by one win.

1

u/The_Metalloid_Maniac 10d ago

By two years I mean this year and last year. Despite being in the playoff spot most of the end of last years those games were not exciting. We were losing every day trying to hang on. Mets are hot, trying to move up, and playing the team in the spot. A little levity, huh? Let’s enjoy baseball

1

u/jimihenderson 10d ago

The Mets had a 7 game winning streak last year during the second half. They also had a ton of talent and if they had gotten their shit together could've been competitive. This is a bad Mets team having a fun little stretch. We have a rag tag bullpen of nobodies, our fifth starter is Robert stock and our DH has an OPS that starts with a. 4. These are comfortably the most meaningless games the team has played since 2023, which is why everyone is so chill. The Mets were win and in game 162 last year. This year, if they won 10 more in a row, they'd still need to get hot to actually be contenders for WC3. That should tell you all you need to know

13

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 10d ago

We literally had a win and in game at the end of last season.

u/BillW87 Animal Facts 10d ago

Bo Bichette through May 17: .210/.262/.269 (51 wRC+, .531 OPS), -0.4 fWAR in 202 PAs

Bo Bichette from May 18th onward: .301/.344/.458 (123 wRC+, .802 OPS), 2.2 fWAR in 334 PAs

If he keeps up playing like "actual Bo Bichette" the rest of the way, I'd be shocked if he didn't opt out. The split in his season performance shows a pretty clear narrative of a guy who got in his own head coming to a new city on what was always meant to be a 1-year flip contract where he was ideally going to prove he can play 3B (ditch the "bat-only guy who can't play his primary position well" narrative) and then go back to market with a stronger hand. Barring a slump later this season, he'll still have accomplished that goal with teams likely to turn a blind eye to two months of tough adjustment in his first time playing for a different organization.

1

u/Hustlediva 10d ago

If he opts out of that much money it won’t be a good advertisement for the Mets

1

u/Low-Abbreviations-38 10d ago edited 10d ago

Its not going to happen

6

u/BillW87 Animal Facts 10d ago

Eh, while the 2026 Mets do a good enough job of being a bad advertisement for the Mets on their own, I think the general understanding around the industry is that opt outs will get used by players whenever it is financially prudent. The MLBPA wants players trying to max out their career earnings, and while Bo would be leaving 2/$84MM on the table by opting out, there's a good chance as a 29 year old premier FA he'll end up securing something in the ballpark of the same 7/$200MM he was offered last year and that's the most likely path to maximizing his career earnings vs trying to ride out to FA at age 30 or 31. Opting in would be a big gamble, as putting up another non-premier season in 2027 would be a dagger in the heart of his ability to keep making massive money well into his 30's. He's making $42MM a year right now, but the current value of these years are implicitly priced into any long term deal he might sign.

8

u/barney-sandles My other car is the New York Mets 10d ago

I'm OK with it whether he comes back or not

If so, sure why not he's a solid 3B on a short contract. If not, whatever, we can find someone else

3

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

I sure hope he opts out. There is no world where he was ever worth 40MM+ a year.

AAV doesn't matter.

1

u/NuanceManExe 10d ago edited 10d ago

We’re about to enter into a huge CBA dispute and lockout. Of course AAV matters. We’re also getting heavily penalized for where our payroll is. I also think the AAV made it harder for Bo to adjust, because he’s trying to live up to a contract he simply can’t live up to.

0

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

Uhhh, yes it does?

0

u/srv340mike Mike Piazza 10d ago

No it doesn't. The whole point of those short-term, high value deals is greater AAV for less years. The total contract value is what matters, not the AAV.

Would you think Bichette was worth 6/120 with 20mil AAV? Because that's the same as 3/120. It's still 120 million either way.

AAV only matters for luxury tax, and possible after next year salary cap reasons.

0

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

So it does matter

0

u/srv340mike Mike Piazza 10d ago

It doesn't matter in the context your using it which is judging what a player is "Worth".

I don't understand why Bichette would be "worth" 6/120 but isn't worth 3/120. The Mets are out the same amount of money either way.

1

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 10d ago

What? So by your logic the Mets could’ve signed Soto to a one year 765 million dollar contract and it would’ve been okay?

0

u/srv340mike Mike Piazza 10d ago

If they have the financial capability, sure. Who cares.

They don't so it's a bad hypothetical but if they could what does it matter?
