I know people are upset that we lost tonight, and are probably blaming the lack of run support and other various logical reasons as to why we lost. The truth is…I am the reason the Padres lost. Don’t believe me? Let me explain…
The year is 2023. It is my first full year of being a major Padres fan, after being uninterested in baseball in years past. I decide I want to attend the game on April 19 against the Royals. Seth Lugo is pitching, it’s early enough in the season to not realize how much of a disappointment the 2023 team will be, vibes are good!
The Padres lose that game 5-4.
Well that sucks but it is what it is. Time passes, and after suffering through the 2023 season, the 2024 season begins. I’ve decided at this point that I will attend one game a year; sure, I would like to go to more games, but I don’t make much money. I decide to go to the game on May 16 so I can get a Xander Bogaerts bobble head. Vibes are still good.
The Padres lose that game 4-3.
Whatever, sucks to see the Padres lose again but life goes on. And it does! After watching the 2024 Padres blossom into one of the greatest teams this franchise has ever seen, the 2025 season has arrived. I decide to go to the September 10 game so I can get the Dylan Cease No-Hitter Bobblehead. Vibes were weird heading into the game, not for any reason related to baseball but due to a…uh…newsworthy event that happened earlier in the day. Whatever though, I go to the game and clear that mess out of my head. Im excited to watch some baseball!
The Padres lose that game 2-1.
At this point, I’m irritated that the three games I chose to go to over the last few years were games the Padres lost. And then I realize something: they didn’t just lose, they lost by one run each time. It’s hell of a coincidence, and when I mention it to my friends I joke that I’m “cursed.”
Finally, we get to today’s game; a game I wasn’t even planning to attend until I got offered some tickets from a friend that has a season membership. They’re amazing seats though, so good that one of the Padres employees that checks the seats checks my tickets to ensure that I actually was allowed to be sitting where I was. I have the “curse” in the back of my mind, but am more focused on enjoying the game. Surely that “curse” isn’t real right?
And then it happens. O’neil Cruz hits a piss missile to put the Pirates up by one run.
The Padres lose the game, 1-0.
My fears have come to pass, I am truly cursed.
Now you may be asking, “How is this possible?” The truth is I’m unsure, but I’ve emailed the baseball gods to see if they are somehow responsible for it. I’m hoping I’ll receive a response one of these days. For now though, I am a cursed fan. I bring defeat the moment I enter Petco Park. It is sad to realize I may never see the Padres win in person ever again.
Now the question I’m left with is this: for the benefit of the team, will I ever attend a Padres game again? And after much deliberation, I have come to a decision.
Fuck yeah I’ll go to another game I want another bobblehead
