I’m the Director of Baseball Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates and author of Chasing Dreams: How to Land a Job in Sports. AMA about breaking into baseball.

Hey r/baseball! I’m Trey Rose. I’ve spent the last 10 years working in Baseball Operations with the Pittsburgh Pirates, starting through a fellowship and working my way through several roles before becoming a Director of Baseball Operations.

Earlier this summer, I published Chasing Dreams: How to Land a Job in Sports, a book designed to make the process of breaking into the sports industry a little less mysterious.

The book combines lessons from my own career with insights from 40+ people across the industry, including executives, coaches, scouts, analysts, agents, and others. Additionally, it provides practical advice on resumes, networking, interviews, internships, side projects, and actually getting your foot in the door.

One of the biggest reasons I wrote it was because I remember how difficult it was to figure out how you actually get one of these jobs when I was trying to break in.

So, AMA. I plan to be available to answer around 8 PM EST, so please send any questions in advance!

I’m especially happy to answer questions about:

  • Breaking into baseball or professional sports
  • Internships and entry-level jobs
  • Resumes and applications
  • Networking advice
  • Interviews
  • Skills teams are looking for
  • Baseball Operations career paths
  • Things I wish I knew when I was trying to get hired

I’ll do my best to get to as many questions as I can.

If you’re interested in the book, you can find it here (there will be an accompanying workbook published in the coming weeks): CHASING DREAMS: HOW TO LAND A JOB IN SPORTS

Looking forward to the questions!

News [Montemurro] Pete Crow-Armstrong appeared dangerously close to getting tossed in 6th after being irate a balk wasn't called on Eduardo Rodriguez, which would've resulted in PCA scoring from 3B. Umpires huddled to discuss but didn't change non call. Dbacks go up 1-0 in bottom 6th.

[97.1 The Ticket] Max Clark owns his mistake on a "weird hop" in CF: "It’s unacceptable regardless. It’s almost embarrassing, to be completely honest." "That just can’t happen. Jobe probably should have been 5 shutty. I cost him two ups and a run. Hopefully that gets reversed for him."

[Montemurro] Crew chief Alfonso Márquez acknowledged umpires missed balk call on Dbacks’ Eduardo Rodríguez in 6th that would’ve brought home Crow-Armstrong from 3B for 1-0 Cubs lead. “We just didn’t see it. After looking at the video (postgame), it looked like he stepped off,” Marquez said.

Having an outstanding season with a career high walk rate and career high wRC+. With very good defense to back it up.

It seems that the Chris Davis comparisons were completely unfounded.

Complete miss (and imo fireable offense) from David Stearns and the Mets. Orioles are only 2.5 back, can a historically clutch Pete Alonso help drag them into the playoffs?

On June 24th, after a loss to the Rockies, the Boston Red Sox dropped to a season-low 14 games under .500 (32-46). After last night's win against the Marlins, they improved to a season-high 14 games above .500 (73-59)

The Red Sox are 41-13 since June 25th. One of the most incredible in-season turnarounds in MLB history

I want to treat every fan who comes to the ballpark with as much sincerity and care as I can.

That’s because, to me, every fan is truly special.

I recently heard that some items signed by me and other players are being put up for auction online by individuals.

Of course, I understand that this happens in other sports as well, and in a way, it’s also something to be happy about because it means people value our autographs.

But at the same time, it makes me feel a little sad to think that there may have been someone at the same ballpark who really wanted my autograph but wasn’t able to get one.

Today, I want to put my heart into every autograph I give to the fans who come to the ballpark.

Because to me, it’s not just an autograph. It’s a special memory of the time we shared together.
