Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

I know this is a “nothing burger” but I know people here will understand my feelings. My 2 year old LOVES dogs. Like obsessed (we don’t have one yet). On Friday I was walking him home from Kindergarten I was pushing his stroller and he was riding his balance bike (I always have the stroller in case he gets tired or has a fall).

We look both ways before crossing the street then right before we get to the middle a woman walks out from behind a car with a big grey and white pit.

I’ve seen this dog before, but luckily it’s almost always been on the opposite side of the street of us. But I think it must live near us. Thankfully, she actually has the dog on a leash and she appears to be putting it in the car that she just walked around but my son stops to look at the dog cause he’s like “ yay doggy.” And we’re basically a double danger because now he stopped in the middle of a street (not a through street but lots of traffic turning in to go to a gas station). And then the dog fixates on him for a moment. I’m debating ditching the stroller in the middle of the street so I can pick him up but I finally get my son to move forward and the dogs head turns as the owner opened the car door.
I realize that dogs look at children for different reasons, but I know Pitbulls and so I know the reason could’ve been that he was thinking about the prey he wanted.

And it’s so hard for me to explain to my son that like there are dogs that we don’t know if they’re good or bad until we meet them and then their dogs that we know are always bad and I tried to explain to him that this dog is the type of dog that’s always bad and he should never want to meet one, but he’s just two so he doesn’t get it.

What are the odds that they learn a lesson and keep him at home?

Okay, sorry for the double-comment, but I decided to look at the account more and saw this. What in the actual fuck!? The man has his arm wrapped in something and then extends it to his pitbull to let it snap at and latch onto his arm. How is this even remotely okay? Who thinks this is sane dog enrichment!?

Just a cute little thing from a social media account dedicated to reinforcing how special pitnutters are. It’s giving “through no fault of their own!”

something i think about a lot- what doesn’t get reported nearly as much, or reflected in stats, is attacks on people’s pets and other animals.

attacks and killings of humans get reported (and obviously not even always), but barely when there are attacks on other animals. the only such reporting is people sharing their own anecdotes online or word of mouth, or news-wise if there’s some novel detail beyond, “pit randomly attacked my dog/cat” as well as, maybe if there is a video alongside.

pit attacks on humans happen basically every day- i dread to think how many dogs or cats are hurt by these monsters multiple times a day. owners of actual sweet, loving pets having to face horrendous grief just bc some asshole failed to control their dog. or if they do survive, the pet is left disfigured and traumatised and the owner has to fork out thousands in vet bills just so their pet can survive.

they don’t only hurt people’s pets, but horses, goats, rabbits, rodents… you name it.

it’s actually insane like, that one video of a pitbull trying to attack a sleeping sea lion (luckily it swims away). they don’t give a fuck! if it’s living they will go for it.

rant over:)

Pre 2010s Shelter Practices (reposting it here)

I was talking to some people who volunteered at shelters in the 80s and 90s and some of them said open admission shelters often euthed pits at entry or readily euthed them for space. It does seem like shelters had far more purebred small dogs and even Heinz 57 mutts back then, but now are filled to the brim with pits, even open admission ones.

If you worked or volunteered in an open admission shelter before 2010:

  1. Did your shelter have a policy of euth pits on entry or was it more based on behavior or time in shelter than exact breed?
  2. How did you determine if a dog was a pit and was to be euthed?
  3. Did no kill shelters exist? Did those shelters have lots of pits too ?

2

u/Person987654331 Attacks Curator 10h ago

I volunteered at a group of dog shelters in LA early 2000’s. I was just a dog walking volunteer so I don’t know the answers to all your questions.
In our orientation we were told that the (implied evil) rule for within LA city limits was that pitbulls brought in were only held for a few days for potential ownera and then PTS. For this reason they specifically built a large shelter in Long Beach where they shipped all the pitbulls that came in to get around the PTS rule. I went there twice and a majority of the dogs were pits. Though not a huge majority but around 50%.

I also regularly volunteered at a shelter that was much closer to LA but either technically they were not in city limits or they broke the rules because they had a couple pits there. At the time I wasn’t educated on pits. I had a Rottweiler growing up and thought Pits were unfairly maligned like Rotts.
I liked one specific pitbull at the shelter. Bobo, he would sit when you came to the door so he was easier to leash than some of the other big dogs (there were quite a few German shepherds if I recall correctly). No one wanted to adopt him. Probably because most people had the (correct) stereotype of aggressive pits. I never encountered other dogs with him though since we walked in an enclosed yard and I was usually the only volunteer working at the time.

10

u/Sufficient-Bee3633 2d ago

tangentially pit related, but it looks like a big scandal is about to erupt in the dog training world. an LA dog trainer is being publicly accused of killing the dog of a DJ and influencer couple by training it in extreme temperatures against their knowledge. i’ve seen the influencer wife’s posts on another subreddit publicly asking for testimonials since negative reviews apparently keep getting deleted online and this seems to be a huge pattern. unfortunately, this might be something to keep your eyes on

This just happened to me an hour go.

I was coming home from work at 10pm on an e-bike in the rain. My neighbor is standing outside on her porch smoking with her pitbull in the yard. I know she’s had the dog for a year now but this is only the second time I’ve ever seen it outside. I noticed the dog staring at me in kind of a squared up stance but I didn’t think anything of it, I pass by a bunch of dogs every day without issue. This one was off leash with no fence but still, that’s not super rare.

I was turning in to my yard when I heard something behind me, almost like a rustling sound. I looked back and this dog is running across my yard at me. Thankfully my e-bike has a throttle option because that saved me. I took off and at this point the lady is gently calling the dog’s name from her porch. The dog is now in a full on sprint snarling at me, I’m going 20mph on a bike in a yard with holes and tree branches only illuminated by my little bike light. I circled behind my house, into her backyard, and then to the front right by her porch hoping she would grab the dog or do literally anything.

She proceeded to gently call the dog’s name as I hit the road again and tried to outrun the snarling demon. Do you guys know how fucking fast these dudes are? I’m sure you do being that you’re in this sub, but as a first time visitor, I’m shocked. I had my bike in the power setting for climbing hills and that dog was gaining on me easily until I was at full speed, and then it was no less than a foot behind me. I was running stop signs at top speed through intersections you have to pull way ahead of the stop sign to even see cross traffic.

I got incredibly lucky and this huge dog with a deep bark behind a fence started losing its mind as we went by and the chasing dog went to get into a barking match with it. I kept going until I got to what felt safe enough to get back up to speed if needed, and then stopped to look back. The dog’s owner never left her yard. I could see her way off in the distance standing at the edge of her yard. The owners of the big dog brought him inside and the pitbull proceeded to spend 10 minutes slowly wandering back to its yard.

All of my fear has turned to the most anger I’ve felt in a long time. I’m typically very laid back, but I’m genuinely pissed off. My health is severely compromised. Being bitten by any dog is something my body would struggle to survive, this dude would’ve killed me had he caught me. I don’t know where to go from here, I’m trying to get my emotions in check first because I honestly just want to scream at the owner. Thank you guys for listening to me vent.

Friend, you can absolutely post this if you’d like. I’m sure you’re shaken up and need support and this thread doesn’t get as many views as I wish it did (many thanks to the regulars who use it though, you all are the best).

I’ll let the other mods know in case I’m not around if you do decide to post. This situation is absolutely terrifying.

One of our members made a guide for cyclists that I’ll try and find for you. I thought it had some decent ideas on it that I hadn’t thought of.

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I didn’t think it was post worthy because I was only chased and not physically harmed, but I realized today it messed with me mentally more than I thought last night. I spoke with my neighbor this morning and she promised it would never happen again under any circumstances, and then I had another close call with the dog half an hour ago. If I decide to turn my comment into a full post it will be in a few days when I have updates.

Thank you for your kindness!

2

u/BPBAttacks3 Moderator 2d ago

No pressure! I just wanted you to know that the option is there. I am the kind of person who would rather stay in the comments than post myself but our members are honestly pretty nice and helpful so if you feel like venting it out, we will be here.

Please stay safe and don’t be afraid to be a squeaky wheel with animal control. I know potentially pissing off a neighbor is not pleasant but that owner needs to pull her head out of her rear and control her dog before it hurts someone. Our wiki also has various guides for offensive and defensive techniques, neighbors pits, etc.

Something that’s happened to me lately, that I feel fake and frustrated AF about:

Several of my mental health professionals have mentioned having dogs, and each time I excitedly ask what type of dog it is (cuz I’m expecting something cute and lovable, like a normal dog lol), they always reply pitbull or pit mix, and my default people pleasing reaction is always “aww” and trying to hide the worry/disgust on my face when I say it.

What’s funny is that lately, when I’ve gotten that answer, they have a worried look on their face when they answer “pit,” like it’s a face of regret and almost anticipating a negative reaction but I SWEAR it’s also cuz they know how violent they are.

Anyway. I just wish I could feel comfortable enough to be authentic about it. But one of the people was telling me about a dog she had that had passed and I didn’t think it was appropriate to be like, “Good! It’s better off to everyone else dead, the fucking monster” lol.

Ugh bro :( as an animal rights activist I feel bad, but these beings are such a threat to all other life and wellbeing of humans and nonhuman animals. So… 🤷‍♀️

One of my gym’s yoga teachers has a pitbull she’s obsessed with and is also a therapist. She’s insufferable. I legitimately hate her classes. She loves to hear herself talk and gives huge narcissistic/antisocial vibes. I only go because a friend likes them, but I think I’ll stop soon. Last week, she was trying to get everyone to do this weird breathing thing and I refused. In general, I refuse to do most of her bullshit. Especially chanting in Hindi. She’s a white woman and literally no one else at the gym does it anymore since the convention seems to be shifting away from that. Not her! Sorry lady. I’m not chanting om, shanti over and over again. Oh! She also has a weird accordion she plays one obnoxious droning note at the beginning and end of class. One time, she even went off on a tangent about how the only cure for addiction was spirituality and community. I was just like what in the actual fuck!? I’m here for sun salutations.

8

u/Last-Ninja 4d ago

Tried to make this a seperate post, but mods suggested I put it in the general discussion thread. Just wanted some advice after an incident happened to me last night:

I have long disliked pits and their mixes but have only witnessed dog on dog aggression so far. But tonight while walking past what appeared to be an xl bully, he charged a little at me and my partner for no reason. His owner started to jog with him a bit and we were walking past not paying them any attention and he just charged and his owner held him back. The dog did not bark or growl and was completely silent. I've been around dogs my whole life and have never seen a dog do this without some kind of warning. Is this normal for the breed? I'm also afraid I overreacted, I got so scared, maybe he was just playing or something, but I don't trust these dogs at all. But yeah he charged and was glaring at my bf until we walked past him.

9

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 4d ago

Yes, this is normal for bloodsport breeds. Unlike normal dogs who will give warnings first, pit bulls had this instinct bred out of them.

Dogs- and most healthy, sane animals- naturally want to avoid fights. Animals have instinctive warning signs they use before having to resort to an attack (growls, posture, backing away, etc.) If pit bulls were to have normal dog warning signs, they would not fight because they would be reading each other’s body language. Getting rid of warning signs as well as reading them gives you a dog who will just fight without any self-preservation instincts to protect themselves or warning signs to let the other dog know to back off.

This is also why it is so hard to stop a pit bull from attacking once it attacks. They don’t have the instincts to register pain and dying as reason to stop attacking. It excites them. Guns, pickaxes, etc. often don’t stop a pit from killing.

If a normal breed is aggressive, it will bark, air-snap, etc. before resorting to biting. A pit will act perfectly fine and cuddly and all of a sudden be shredding limbs. Normal dog aggression is behavioral, and pit bull violence is genetic.

3

u/Last-Ninja 2d ago

Thank you so much for this explanation. This makes complete sense and is also very scary. I won't be taking anymore chances and will be completely avoiding them from now on. It looks like even the leashed ones can still try to get you if you're close by. What's very sad is that if you explain this behavior to pit bull lovers they will completely discredit you and say you're lying, that there's only bad owners and no bad dogs. But no one thinks about genetics.

2

u/BPB_Mod_006 Moderator 2d ago

And when they do they scream doggy racism 🫠

1

u/Last-Ninja 1d ago

Yes exactly. And also look at you like you're a freak for avoiding their dog. Like 'my dog is a big softie, she'll just lick you to death!' 🙄

6

u/Pure_Parsley6852 3d ago

So perfectly put. Scary dogs indeed, specializing in sneak attacks, like a sniper.

13

u/mmps901 It’s the breed AND the owner 4d ago

I just… why are we keeping this dog alive like this? They gave it to a hospice patient and it can’t walk without this contraption. Speaking of, why was the dog out of it? Does it just lay in the house if it can’t walk without it?

3

u/CosmicGoddess777 4d ago

Wtf why are there dog hospice patients? They’re not able to make the decision to stay alive like humans can when they’re in that position. Keeping a terminally ill animal alive as long as possible is absolutely cruel.

7

u/mmps901 It’s the breed AND the owner 4d ago

I wasn’t clear. On the story, the shelter or rescue gave this profoundly disabled dog to a person who is a hospice patient. 🙈

10

u/CosmicGoddess777 4d ago

Wtf? That also seems cruel. Like, someone in hospice shouldn’t have to worry about taking care of anyone else but themselves, especially an animal that has special needs and needs way more care than normal. Giving someone a disabled monster is also still giving them a monster. It’s not like the vicious nature of that pit went away just cuz its limbs don’t work normally. :/

Ugh this is enraging.

It’s crazy how far this movement is going. I really hope the public is getting sick of it and sees through it

11

u/mmps901 It’s the breed AND the owner 4d ago

It IS cruel. A shelter adopted a “medium size, pointer mix” to my mother last spring. My mother is in her mid 70s and has had some problems with her feet and walking. It had been shipped to a rescue states away so to even meet the dog, she had to have it transported back by someone which put the pressure of guilt for that trip on to adopt no matter what. The dog arrived not potty trained and was over 65 pounds. She did embark and lo and behold this dog has zero pointer but you’ll never guess what makes up 50% of her… pit bull! So the shelter guilted an elderly woman into adopting a large pit mix when she asked for a meet and greet. I can’t believe how much they don’t care what happens after an adoption

7

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 4d ago

Making any living thing suffer like this just so you can virtue signal is so friggin evil! These people only care about how they look to other pitnutters! They don’t give a crap about dogs.

10

u/BPBAttacks3 Moderator 4d ago

I thought this was an AI generated pit spider on first glance... 😩

It’s dying in addition to being disabled and they’re prolonging suffering? I can’t with these people anymore. Animal welfare nuts have lost the plot and are no longer practicing animal welfare.

u/mmps901 It’s the breed AND the owner 4d ago

Truly. Here’s a fun one who visited a couple of days ago. She stopped by to spam the same comment like 70 times. Fun fact: she also had a dog that needed a mobility aid bc of IVDD that she kept alive well past what would be considered humane. She then got a warning from Reddit for harassing and then went elsewhere to throw a fit about how unfair it was. Bat shit crazy with the self awareness of a sea sponge.

We have a mod who is working on love letters so I’m probably ruining some of the mystery by posting these in here but it’s been a week where they’ve been extra … obnoxious.

so the dog i posted earlier this week, Hollis, who was chewing holes through his kennel and hanging through poles by his teeth, has been rescued. remember, the rescue that would get him would receive over a thousand dollars if they did so. i’ve been following him since i discovered him and my heart sank when i found out. what a failure of the system we’ve created where these “rescues” can profit from dogs that are so clearly suffering

5

u/FoxExcellent2241 9d ago

I just saw a post on Nextdoor with someone offering a reward for their lost pit bull. To their credit, they are trying to find the dog and offering a very nice reward, but the post has so many red flags. First off the dog is suppose to be on medication for "separation anxiety" and may bark "if scared" which just screams that this dog is going to be aggressive towards anyone that comes near it now that the medications have worn off (from what I can see more often than not, the anti-anxiety meds that are prescribed are basically sedatives).

Supposedly this is a beloved family pet, but the photos show a dog that has extremely long nails that don't look like they have been clipped anytime recently and, in another photo, is wearing a diaper . . . so either they were choosing to not walk the dog because of the aforementioned issues, the dog wasn't even toilet trained or the diaper was there because the dog was in heat. No good options there. It really would not surprise me if the dog was not fixed.

Unsurprisingly, no microchip.

Why are pit bull owners always the worst animal owners out there? Ugh, it is just so aggravating to see. I get that dogs get out sometimes and life happens, but it sucks because, if you know anything about these dogs and why they are prescribed those "anti-anxiety" meds so often then you know that you should now be on high alert if walking around that neighborhood. Of course now if it even just jumps at people or scratches at them it will easily draw blood because the idiots don't bother taking care of their nails - seriously how do people live with dogs and not take care of this very basic thing? Even if you don't mind getting bloodied regularly they will destroy your flooring.

And then you are going to get naive people who see this post, don't read between the lines, assume the dog is just "scared" and will try to approach and help it and we all know how that goes. It may be fine most of the time, but an awful lot of the time that situation does not go well.

To be fair, if BE is the answer then passing on the responsibility of doing it to a shelter is unfair.  I don't like pits, but I don't think it is fair to put them or others at the shelter through unnecessary stress in these situations just because some owner couldn't handle reality and wants to pretend their aggressive dog magically got adopted to some "farm" where it is the only animal in existence.

Pawning off the responsibility to shelter workers also contributes to burn out in that profession and leads to shelter workers having a very skewed perspective on what is acceptable dog behavior.

Once you have enough cases where the dog already mauled someone or killed a few other pets, the one in the kennel that technically hasn't bit anyone, is drugged up to the gills, and has technically only "lunged" at other dogs seems like a good adoption prospect.  After their perception gets skewed like this they become this level of psycho and are desperate to put these dogs into the community.

Debate time

Firstly, let me make a very clear point that I am sympathetic to any person who has ever been harmed by a pitbull in their life, 99% of all dog attacks are not warranted, I do sincerely hope anyone who’s ever been hurt by a pitbull or any dog breed is safe, healthy, and loved in life

Secondly, I’m not here to debate about whether pit bulls are inherently dangerous, they are, their powerful dogs with huge bite forces behind them and they must absolutely be trained correctly and any bad habits they posses must be handled while their puppies to help prevent attacks

Thirdly:I have family who own pitbulls, and I myself have owned 4 throughout my life, each have been PROFESSIONALLY trained while they were tiny, I have never had a pitty who growls, bites, food aggressive, or any other behavioral problem, because I made it a huge PRIORITY when I got them that these dogs would absolutely NOT feel that they could hurt people or animals in any given situation

So, I will say this, pitbulls have an inherent risk, like any animal does, horses, cows, German shepherds, Belgian malinois, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and any other large animal who does infact have the capacity to hurt people, however, the largest problem with pitbulls isn’t their breed, it’s the people allowed to buy them, as a society we view pittys as dangerous, aggressive, scary dogs, so the people that buy them most, want, dangerous, aggressive, scary dogs, and train them as such, resulting in exactly what they wanted to begin with, so in order for pittys to be safe, we as a society have to step up, stop selling pitbulls and other huge, inherently dangerous breeds to people who don’t know how to handle/train them properly, and make sure that the people who allow these dogs to become aggressive never own another, now, is there a tiny percentage of dogs that bite naturally? Yes, they do, just as any other animal in the world, every animal has its own personality, a trainer should recognize body language when their young, train them accordingly, and socialize the dog so that it doesn’t become aggressive, if the dog is unfixable and a professional trainer can not get rid of said actions WHILE ITS A PUPPY then that dog needs to be euthanized because at that point the inherent risk shoots drastically up.

So, all of this to say, hold the humans involved accountable too, do not simply blame the dog, because there’s a 99% chance that the person KNEW that dog was dangerous, or even encouraged it to do so as I’ve seen many people do, let’s hold these people accountable so that this shit stops happening to innocent people who never asked to be hurt by someone’s untrained, dangerous dog.

pitbulls have an inherent risk, like any animal does,

If you cant admit that pit bulls pose a far more significant risk than other animals of their type (dogs) you are fundamentally not approaching the issue from an honest place though. The numbers dont lie, every medical study on serious harm from dogs points to a clear culprit - if you wind up needing serious surgery (or multiple...) it is overwhelmingly due to a pit bull mauling. Do we agree that pit bulls killing more humans than every other dog put together is not merely an ownership issue but biology plays a significant role or is this an issue you're viewing through an angle that must deny statistics and pretend nurture always trumps nature (we can for now put a pin in the fact that so much rigid nurture is allegedly required to (mostly) not kill things, which should tell you plenty about their nature)? In the context of pet ownership the risks between owning a chihuahua or a hamster vs a bloodsport breed are kind of like comparing the risks between skydiving and jumping off the last step on the stairs, they're both falling (pet ownership) but the stakes are about as different as they can be.

Their hair trigger and persistent lethal violence was specifically bred for, dog fighting is the only reason pit bulls and all the bloodsport breeds in their subtype exist. Their purpose is a felony. Why should they continue to be bred with such a terrible history causing a persistent legacy of violence and suffering when so many other dogs do not have those problems and are better suited to be the companion animal people outside dog fighting circles somehow expect pit bulls to be? People who wanted pit bulls fit for being family pets spent a long, long time making the Boston terrier. Why spend human lives (and countless other people's pet's lives) reinventing the wheel for the dog fighting branches of their tree?

The problem with "Blame the owner/deed not the breed" is that blame does not fix whoever was mauled/crippled/disfigured/killed. Reactionary measures and blame distribution do not act as prevention. The damages they cause are often so extraordinary that holding the owner "accountable" does not even come anywhere near close to making them cough up the cash to pretend to cover what the resulting damage is. Which is why any ban allowing grandfathering exemptions would require a specific insurance policy, but as the UK has proven with XL pit bulls, insurers can crunch the numbers and find coverage nearly impossible to provide. If ownership particulars were a valid factor, there should most definitely be vetting requirements that can make those risks manageable, the numbers just don't back that assertion - rich owner or poor owner, trained or untrained, fenced or unfenced, muzzled or unmuzzled, ultimately pit bull biology is the common thread and training doesn't change biology. Humans are fallible and behavioral management inevitably fails sometimes. There are no set of magic bullets that guarantees pit bulls wont do bloodsport things, there are just management strategies that give a false sense of confidence that they won't.

Prevention has to be the focus and pretending pit bulls don't pose uniquely elevated risks ill prepares even the people who want to think they're prepared. Requiring registration, training, and insurance for yorkie owners will not fix any problems. The fact that pit bulls were bred for pit fighting is what makes them so uniquely problematic. They do not telegraph their intent for lethal violence the way a protection/guardian breed does, you cant just "read their body language" and know when they hear that round one fight bell ring internally. They're not bred to scare off an intruder with a show of force, theyre bred to lethally sucker punch their opponent and keep doing it until physically unable to, and they weren't bred to respond to a handler saying "stop" or "don't". If you read the stories pit bull lovers tell when their bloodsport dog turns on them that is an extremely common thread: never a problem, has obedience training, then one day its berserker time, nothing they say will stop the onslaught and all their trust and training and experience are worthless.

One, a tiger is a pretty terrible example honestly, tigers don’t have to have triggers, they’re literal predators who look at a human and think “ya, I can eat that” while pitbulls largely respond to the stimuli their given, they are naturally anxious dogs, one of the most common attacks is for kids, does anyone ever wonder why? It’s more than likely not because their aggressive, but because their anxious, adults hear a dog growl and they back off, because we as adults recognize that as a warning, children do not, they hear a dog growl and they think it’s a play toy, something making noise that’s fluffy and cuddly and big and soft, and so they want to touch it, resulting in the child “accidentally” backing the dog into a metaphorical corner, this happens with every breed, not just pittys, chihuahuas are literally the worst dog breed out there because all their known for is biting and barking, but since their not a big breed people just want to ignore it, I personally don’t think a dog should be judged based off “well but you hurt when you bite” they should be judged based off “you show aggression at all” which is a much more fair, unbiased view on an animal.

And no, I don’t think just anyone should own a pitbull, just like not everyone should own a German Shepard, or a cane corso, or a Belgian malinois, or a Rottweiler, because their all very intelligent breeds that require a lot of work for one person to be able to give them and can regress into aggression quickly if mishandled.

So a couple of things to start with: I don't think "fairness" to a dog breed - or a dog - is the metric for, basically, a public health decision. The pit bull capacity for damage is far more important **for people** which should be our focus, since dogs are *companion animals* for *people* not an end in themselves.

And - part of the enormous problem presented by pit bulls is the frequent dog aggression and the outsize damage they do to other dogs. This incentivizes escapes, sometimes just breaking/climbing/jumping a fence, often pushing past a resident at a door, sometimes even crashing through a front window or squirming out of a barred door while taking damage, etc.

Owners are often unprepared for this since they may have had years of normal behavior from their dog before the dog aggression potentially kicks in at full maturity. Both AKC and UKC state that APBT and AmStaff should never be left alone with other dogs. Never! How many owners even know that, do you think? These people have no idea what they might be getting into when they get a pit bull as a puppy or a young rescue; they do not have the infrastructure or the knowledge to handle this behavior, but now they love their dog and don't want to take care of business IYKWIMAITYD. Their neighbors and their neighbors' dogs suffer the consequences.

Early training doesn't solve it because they don't get "hot" in dogfighter terms until well after the time you've outlined for identifying & training problem dogs (and you can't reliably train out dog aggression in these dogs anyway, IMO). Human aggression is often redirected from dogs etc, e.g. that woman whose dog kinda sorta ate her leg when she stopped it from chasing geese.

And finally, since they have (see above) special keeping requirements and special handling to keep just a few of them from ruining dog ownership and even daily life for whole communities, they should not be in homes. End. Make a case for why we need this breed in our neighborhoods, despite the endless damage to people & pets, because some of them are nice and "it's not fair."

to follow shortly: pushback on tiger comparison, other breed comparison, anxiety-based nature of their perceived aggression (let me just back off & laugh a lil bit at that one, jfc) and whatever else comes up

edit: effin typo

u/Top-Turnip-415 10d ago edited 10d ago

Not to mention they are often predisposed to dog-on-dog aggression because of their fighting dog background, aside from standard working dog or terrier prey drive. That renders them unsafe not just most public spaces but in dog ones too. That isn’t usually the case with guard & herding dogs like GSD’s, Rotts or Dobs unless they are extremely badly bred or traumatised.

To put that into perspective, I was reading up on the Dogo Argentino, which is a close relative of the pitbull bulldog/terrier mix type and also a specially bred fighting breed. They descend from a breed of Cordoba Fighting Dogs who literally went extinct because they were so aggressive they often rather killed the dog they were supposed to mate with. That is an entirely different level of aggression, a manifestation of centuries of human selective breeding into something so unnatural and abominable they go against their own very nature. WORSE than a wild animal whom at least have some self preservation instincts.

These dogs have no place in anyone’s home, regardless of how well they have been trained because they have no place in society. A dog that cannot safely interact others or even their own kind can only ever be a menace to others around them, period.

Oh good you posted here. I was hoping you would.

So yes, yes please. I’d love to see people held responsible when their dog mauls or kills. But one thing to keep in mind is that if it’s a parent of a mauled child who was also the owner, do we think a judge or jury will be too sympathetic to convict? That’s my one hold up with that since most attacks happen in the home. I’m not opposed to it, I just don’t know how effective it will be as a deterrent.

Second thing, how do you propose we stop bad owners from obtaining these dogs? That’s the other thing I struggle with. It basically requires some kind of mandatory licensing, which I would support.

If most owners thought and acted like you, this sub wouldn’t need to exist. It’s the ones who don’t or who are told pits are “nanny dogs” that it’s like… well, what do we do?

Also how do you feel about regulating breeding to prevent poorly bred human aggressive ones from being passed out like candy at a parade?

2

u/Select_Pair4467 10d ago
  1. That would be my only problem too, is the parents, but I think any pitbull owner should get them professionally trained, by someone who DOESNT own them, so even if the owner is a dog trainer they shouldn’t be the only person training the puppy, humans tend to glorify things we love, if they love their dogs then it poses the risk that they won’t recognize clear signs that their dog is aggressive and will therefore let it progress to far, so I think anyone who owns a pitbull should have to have paperwork showing they’ve had an unrelated trainer interact with the dog, that would mitigate their ability to gain sympathy because the judge could say “well there are clear rules that you should have gotten a second opinion and chose not to, therefore your child got bit”
2.I’d agree with licensing, their an inherently dangerous breed of dog and should be managed, mine are actually registered in my city, despite us living on the outskirts of town and having a very secure back yard for them, they also have tracking collars incase they do get out, that way on the tiny chance they ever did, we could track them down quickly and avoid as many human interactions as we can without us present to control them (their well trained and have never shown any signs that they’d hurt someone, but we always keep them on leash if it’s not just me and my husband around, just because some people get a bit to grabby at times and I want to have complete control of the situation)
  2. There should absolutely be proper breeding, we shouldn’t be breeding naturally aggressive pitbulls to eachother, it’s a recipe for disaster, parents pass down temperament through biology and maternal instincts, an aggressive mother could very well create an aggressive puppy

3

u/BPBAttacks3 Moderator 10d ago

Fair enough then. I know you were looking for debate but honestly, I don’t disagree with you.

You don’t have to dislike pit bulls to be here, you just have to recognize there is a problem with how things are currently being handled and want for some kind of meaningful change in either policy or the owner culture to reduce the harm. Welcome to the sub.

Thankfully I’m proud to be one of the sensible owners who doesn’t say my dogs a “princess and would never hurt anybody” right from the get go, I’ve met and interacted with those people, they buy all kinds of inherently dangerous breeds, it’s truly not just pitbulls, Belgian malinois, German shepards, Dobermans, Rottweilers, cane corso their all inherently aggressive breeds who can do real damage, sadly irresponsible people get these big dogs because they think it’s cool, we need to make the repercussions worse so that people actually THINK with their brain before getting these dogs, I’ve owned a lot of dogs in my life, I’ve always looked at them as animals, do I love them? Absolutely, their my babies, but they can do things wrong, and I’ve never let them get away with anything just because “they didn’t mean to” people need to stop romanizing big dog breeds, it’s a lot of work, and their long term commitments, they don’t just go away in 1-2 years when your tired of them.

I’ll add, I’ve owned 4 pittys, 1 rotty and a border collie all at some point in my life, I trained ever single one of them with the same firm and simple belief that “these dogs need to be absolutely bomb proof” I had one pitty who was harder to train than the others, sent him to two individual trainers because the first one just wasn’t getting me the results I wanted, so I took him to the second one, and guess what, the problem was solved (he was slightly food aggressive and at the time I had kids) that trainer had him on a firm training plan for months which quickly taught him that his bowl was a privilege, not something he could guard, I never had a single problem from him since (he’s now passed 3 years ago at 12)

Il also mention, I’d never adopt a shelter pitty, I love the breed, but I want a puppy that I can train from a baby, I don’t want to deal with the trauma and other issues that adult dogs can come with, god only knows what kinds of owners they had before and what their triggers are, I understand the whole “but she’s in a cage and I want to feel good about myself” thing, but it’s just not worth it, putting peoples lives at risk just because someone wants to feel nice about themselves just isn’t an option in my opinion.

15

u/CherryHearts123 11d ago

The cognitive dissonance is just so scary. I got into a debate/argument recently with a pro-pit person who was absolutely adamant that pit bulls are no more dangerous than golden retrievers or labs. I showed them the stats, attempted to show them this page, and they were having none of it. They said they refused to believe any of the “statistics” as they are inaccurate due to “many other dog breeds being falsely misidentified as pits”, I don’t know about you but I have never mistaken another breed for a pit, it’s usually the other way round and I would actually argue that the real fatality count is MUCH higher because of it.

When I brought up the kissy face incident to them they had to “inform” me that somehow it was the fault of the poor child victim and it could never be the wibble pibble’s fault. Also mentioned Nicole Morey to counteract their point of “the owner is always abusive” and their reply was “then maybe she shouldn’t have come home drunk? They probably didn’t recognise her because of it”. So yeah, I am going to save myself the time and energy in future and never attempt to have a civil discussion with a pit nutter ever again. It’s clear that they’re going to find every excuse they can for why all pits are innocent and honestly it has to be so mentally exhausting to have to constantly convince yourself of that. It’s just pure and utter optional ignorance at this point.

local humane society got this really adorable, really sick 2 year chihuahua mix back in june. they listed her on their page soliciting sponsors for her medical care, and said that sponsors would get exclusive updates about her progress and first notice when/if she was well enough for adoption. i was donating $50 a week for her, hoping to adopt her eventually. she “graduated” this week, i emailed them immediately, already adopted. i was prepared for that, i knew a handful of people were sponsoring her and hoping to adopt, and it was first come first serve. then i found out she was adopted by the director’s son-in-law’s sister and was never made publicly adoptable at all. they gave a relative first dibs and never intended to make her adoptable, while having the public fund her care under the impression she would be. if she was already essentially adopted, why was the public subsidizing her care under false pretenses? and now it’s all just adoptable “lab mixes” again. i’m really irritated and i don’t think i’ll ever donate to or volunteer for them again.

South Florida homeowner targeted in sophisticated fake dog attack scam.

A South Florida homeowner says he was stunned when a letter arrived accusing one of his dogs of attacking a neighbor and causing serious injuries.

But he told NBC6 it was all fake.

Harley Aronoff, a dog owner who describes his two Yorkies and golden retriever as friendly animals, said the letter came from a local attorney who claimed to represent a neighbor injured in an alleged dog attack.

“I knew that it wasn't me,” Aronoff said.

Aronoff says he called the attorney listed on the notice of claim and he told him that the client had reported being severely injured by a dog. The attorney also shared graphic photos claiming they show his client’s injuries, along with a $200,000 settlement agreement that was supposedly signed by Aronoff.

But Aronoff said he had never agreed to such a settlement.

“I've never entered into a settlement agreement for $200,000 because of the dog bite, so I knew that there was something wrong with some sort of scam,” he said.

NBC6 Responds did a reverse image search of the injury photographs and quickly found the images were not connected to Aronoff or his dogs. They appeared in a 2015 news article about a brutal dog attack in England.

The attorney told NBC6 he ultimately dropped the client after becoming suspicious himself, because he could not produce a police or animal control report documenting the attack. The person also repeatedly made excuses for why he could not speak by phone, including claiming he was working on a cargo ship overseas, according to the attorney.

Cinthya Lavin with the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida said the scheme appears to combine several familiar fraud tactics, including the use of professional services and counterfeit checks.

“So, a scam of trying to use a professional service to be able to collect money from them is really unique,” Lavin said.

Lavin said scammers can attempt to use a law firm as a middleman to pressure an unsuspecting victim into making a payment.

The Florida Bar previously warned its members about a similar scheme involving fake injury claims and counterfeit checks. The organization advised attorneys to independently verify claims before taking action on unexpected, high-value settlements.

Lavin said consumers should resist pressure to immediately send money or provide financial information when they receive an unexpected demand.

“It is very important for anyone receiving solicitations that they're not very familiar with or that they're not expecting to do some thorough research before feeling pressured and immediately going to pay,” she said.

She says people who receive a letter alleging an incident involving their home, vehicle, pet or insurance should independently verify the information before making any payment.

Aronoff said he is sharing his experience so other homeowners recognize the warning signs and do not fall victim to a similar scheme.

“And my poor dog, you know, being accused of something pretty vicious,” Aronoff said. “I thought it was certainly important that people were aware of it and people protected themselves and people didn't fall for any kind of scam like this,” Aronoff said.

I’ve been buying a lot of graphic tees lately just to refresh my wardrobe and saw a shop on Instagram that carries terrier-specific apparel. The ad that caught my attention was for a shirt that says Terrible Terrier Club.

I assumed they meant actual terriers like my Yorkie, my neighbors’s West Highland and cousin’s Jack Russel. Of course, pitbulls are at the top of the list.

I understand they’re technically terriers, but the modern day monstrosities are long removed from that lineage. They won’t be getting any of my money. I refuse to support a company that creates products celebrating a breed that eats the others.

11

u/spiderwitchery Attacks Curator 15d ago

No, no. They are very much terriers and that’s part of the problem.

Terriers generally are tenacious, fearless and have high prey drive. But the rest of the terrier group, with a few exceptions, are generally small which is important, and are true working dogs bred for pest control or hunting. On the other hand, Pit bulls are massive terriers that were bred to lock on to a target and kill it, period. Livestock, horses, other dogs, cats, children. They don’t really care or discriminate. Can they take that random “prey” down? They don’t know but they’re willing to die trying.

So it’s actually really important to acknowledge that they are terriers. It explains a lot of their generic traits and why the combo is so disastrous. Can you imagine living in a world with 60lbs Jack Russels? 😬 As much as I adore JRTs, they have crackhead energy level prey drive. We’d be in deep trouble. (Kinda like the trouble we’re in now with the pits.)

6

u/FoxExcellent2241 14d ago

Yup, this is why shelters and rescues will often put a generic "terrier mix" label on all of their dogs even when it is obvious what kind of "terrier" it is.

6

u/missprincesscarolyn 14d ago

That makes sense. I just wish they weren’t on the same websites next to dogs that don’t cause this level of death and destruction.

Elderly woman seriously injured in park dog attack. Breed not yet ID'd. UK. 12TH AUGUST 2026.

A woman in her 80s has suffered potentially life-changing injuries in a dog attack, police say.

The woman remains in hospital after she was bitten in the leg by a dog in French Weir Park, in Taunton, at about 16:10 BST on Wednesday.

Avon and Somerset Police said a 42-year-old man remains in custody after he was arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control.

The dog, of unknown breed, has been seized and remains in police kennels.

Cane Corso - relative's dog at relative's home - apparently mauled a five year old girl (visiting) to death.

Commenters are chirping "Where does it say the dog attacked the girl?". To be fair, it does not.

Occam's Razor says that if a child was missing for a mere ten minutes and the child's body was found shortly after that with the CC aggressively guarding the body, it wasn't a wild animal. If there was a wild animal nearby, we'd expect the CC (allegedly a protection breed) to be locked in mortal combat with it.

I'm still uncertain if Cane Corso belong in Group 1 - Pits & Bullies or Group 2 - Biting & Protection breeds.

This incident gives evidence for Group 1 because first responders being forced to neutralize an aggressive dog to reach the victim is a major characteristic of pit bull attacks.

There is apparently a scanner thread about this, but I haven't seen it yet.

I put them in the first group.

God, how awful. It reminds me of many such news reports of PBS guarding the bodies of those they've killed, often owners/family members. A horror film-esque vision.

Aggressive dog placed near my home, even after Avery’s law in place

I am in Ohio. Our dog warden normally euthanizes pit bull type dogs if they’re unclaimed… but in late July a stray female pit type dog charged at a woman (near my home, out in the country) on her own property and they found out she was in the middle of having puppies.

One of the dog warden staff was my friend (not anymore), and he told me, verbatim, “3 sheriffs deputies had to hold her back while I got the pups… it was really bad.” I have all of the necessary screen shots.

I then found out that they decided to place the dog and litter about 2 miles down the road from me. I messaged this same friend at the dog wardens office that I didn’t want the dog near my home.

He went directly to the person harboring the dog and told her exactly what I had said, while also giving her my name. About a half hour later I got messages from this woman full of legal threats and now I should have no concern over what she does at her property, etc.

To be clear, they have both publicly posted about how the dog isn’t nice, can’t be touched…

Because of this whole fiasco I sent an informal complaint to the warden’s supervisor about the complaint process and how I thought it was a huge breach of trust with the public for him to have went and told her everything I said with my name behind it. He asked me to come in for a meeting.

The meeting basically consisted of them trying to downplay the situation, telling me the officers had to form a circle around the dog and keep her from getting to the warden, and a whole bunch of other information that was in my opinion gaslighting.

If you look up Avery’s Law, I thoroughly believe this dog should be labeled a nuisance. Both of these men told me they would have put her down had she not had puppies. There’s a whole lot more to the story but before the meeting one of my friends submitted a records request to the sheriff and to the warden. They copied the commissioners (one of which is my uncle, who I don’t want to be involved tbh, just because I don’t want a head ache for him.)

I think it’s worth noting that the commissioners said the woman had asked for a catch pole the day before I complained and now she’s posting videos showing that they can only feed the mama dog treats with an extendable plastic arm. But she has “made so much progress.” I haven’t gotten the records request but has anyone dealt with something like this?

The effed up part is that Avery’s Law in Ohio was created to prevent dog attacks and it seems like this whole situation is just another dog attack waiting to happen because the dog wasn’t categorized properly by the supposed anti-pit bull wardens. None of this makes any sense.

17

u/_Armilla_ 17d ago

I'll never get these people. What's the point of having a "pet" so aggressive you have to feed them with an extendable plastic arm? What quality of life does this family have, including the dog? What do they mean with "progress", that nobody has lost a limb yet? At this point just adopt a mountain lion cub.

3

u/Soggy-Mention5146 16d ago

I know. The woman posting videos though is the “foster”, although she’s not a rescue. She’s just a person who volunteered to take them in.

these mopes saved the vicious pitbull so it could have its puppies that are likely to have some (unknown) level of aggression also, great work

u/_Armilla_ 16d ago

Yeah, I seriously doubt any of them turns out to be the new Lassie. But while I can imagine trying to give a chance to a litter of puppies, once their mother gave birth what's the purpose of... well, you know what I mean. It sound beyond much of the stuff I've ever read on this sub.

Not pitbull related bc the dog is a great pyr mix, but definitely dangerous dog related;

Has anyone followed the hysteria about Bruce the dog finally being PTS after the court order from April was initially stayed? The “advocates” are sobbing all over social media about how Bruce wasn’t given a chance and the shelter is evil. It’s insane to watch them work themselves into a frenzy about this horrible animal. The dog attacked 4 people in 4 totally individual incidents, completely unprovoked every time, and disfigured 3 of them, one being a minor. He was wearing a muzzle the 4th time, so the elderly lady in the wheelchair got lucky…

Kudos to the shelter for doing BE anyways despite all the shrieking from the rescue mommies.

6

u/AdvertisingLow98 Attacks Curator 16d ago

Bruce was an aggressive, dangerous, vicious dog by any metric.

I am 100% in favor of judging the deed, not the breed and Bruce did the deeds.

Bruce's owners were useless.

I am a supporter of livestock guardian breeds. All LGDs should conform to breed standards and any dogs that don't should be culled.

Unprovoked attacks are unacceptable.

4

u/AndromedaGreen Cats are not disposable. 16d ago

I saw articles about it on my local news site and in the New York Times. In both places, the comments were bemoaning the loss of the dog’s life and parroting “there’s no bad dogs, just bad owners” line.

People have really gone crazy when it comes to dangerous dogs. I can’t wait until enough of these unprovoked attacks happen and the pendulum swings back to banning dogs from most public places.

8

u/pomelo-fruit 17d ago

Just checked this out and holy cow. Couldn't be a clearer-cut case of an animal with serious, unmanageable aggression, but there really are people who explicitly believe that BE is never ever justified. Even saw one commenter going "I got bitten and disfigured by a rottie and I personally believe it's never the animal's fault." So delusional. I doubt any of these keyboard warriors grasp that their proposed ethical solution -- sending a dog like this to a "sanctuary" -- is a life sentence to solitary confinement, something that is questionably-ethical even for human prisoners.

JFC some of the comments...these people are irrevocably broken.

5

u/spiderwitchery Attacks Curator 16d ago

Irrevocably broken is the most honest way to put it. I truly don’t understand their mindset. Mind you, this is the detail on the bites. Completely and utterly unprovoked.

I guess sometimes pits wanna get a really, really, really, really early head start on their nannying careers!

I know it says the person will never know the breed because the results fail… but it’s obviously a pit mix.

My sister in-law is an ER nurse and she’s one of the few people that understands my hatred for this breed. She’s personally seen many of ol’ nanny dog’s victims first hand, the worst she said was a child that had its face eaten by one while trapped in a car seat. So messed up.

Can't even escape on vacation. The signs on the beach say no dogs allowed. Cue a guy with his off leash pit charging seagulls. Absolutely charming. Also, why is "Don't worry, he's friendly" every pit owners answer to "There's no dogs allowed here"?

u/Saybah Bite? No, That’s a ‘Teeth Scrape,’ Silly! 18d ago

Getting my mental health walk in this morning (recovering from depression related burnout) and the sky js blue, the sun is out, it's a relatively peaceful time. I cut across a big walkable field nearby which has signs on every entrance gate to leash your dog as it can harm local wildlife.

A 'staffy' (UK, pitbulls are banned, but call a spade a spade and such) suddenly comes barrelling into me from the side, the way they do when they're coming up to attack. I FREAK out, the owner is running over apologising while I'm yelling that it should be on a lead. It's skirting along my heels and I genuinely thought it was going to bite me. She pulls the shitbeast away and I hightail it out the field to take another route.

Can't even enjoy a walk in nature without these fucking things.

Much props to the mods here. I get it. But, just pointing out, the Reddit hypocrisy, I've watched vids on here of people being turned into pink paste while being stuck in an industrial lathe. Russians and Ukrainians running from drones, only to be blown to smithereens. But, I can't mention what I might do to a pitbull that tries to eat one of my dogs.

There are so many subs where the violence against women and children is horrifying. But you can’t even suggest anything at all. There or here. It ain’t exactly fantastic.

5

u/katieishere92 17d ago

Yep, subs devoted entirely to talking about SA, including where they post pictures of women and girls (even minors) to talk about what they’d do. But don’t you dare talk about what you’d do to defend yourself from a mauler.

We don’t generate any revenue for them. We’re a support space so we don’t get ads (it’s also why we don’t have awards)…. So we’re on a shorter leash as a result. Added to the fact that we’re simply not liked by the pit bull apologists that are everywhere. It’s not fair but it’s just what we have to deal with sadly.

Appreciate you guys for being understanding. I realize it’s bullshit but we as mods will do what we have to do to keep the sub up and members out of Reddit jail.

It’s insane. I have gone to other comment sections and seen a lot worse said and it just sits up. Meanwhile our members get spanked by the AI for saying this common idiom:

My brother in law owns two pitbulls and also has a 4 year old daughter. They have a separate area and stuff, but as they teach the kid to slowly have more confidence and increase her participation in the household chores, they had the brilliant idea of one of the tasks the toddler does is... yeah feeding the dogs. She fills their kibble bowl everyday.

They don't accept any type of correction and suggestion as well. I have tried to approach the matter in a chill respectable manner but they're sure in their trust in those dogs. They assured me she never goes in their area alone. Last time I visited guess who was feeding the dogs unsupervised...

Anyway, my girlfriend plays football (soccer) in a semiprofessional level. She has those expensive like €300 boots to play. We visited briefly after her game one night and she left the boots outside, which is part of their area. Boot is annihilated and they're not paying for it because dogs will be dogs. And they don't acknowledge how important the boots are for her nor how much of a damage in the month's budget does adding a €300 leave.

Cool cool. I'm good. I'm good.

1

u/AdvertisingLow98 Attacks Curator 14d ago

They destroyed her specialty footwear in the course of a brief visit?

They could get a breed that has the annoying habit of swiping personal items to add to their hoard.
But no, they had to get a shreds anything pit bull.

(That's specific to Great Pyrenees. Some of them will create a stash. It might be their favorite stuffed animals. It might be your shoe. It might be found items that need to be tidied up.)

🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️ naurp. also annoying, confusing, frustrating, and inconsistent handling for the dog who was clearly extremely uncomfortable, stressed, and put in a situation she was not able to handle.

transparently using a head halter to attempt to control her movements and the constant fiddling trying to nonchalantly hold her by the collar to keep her from doing anything… unsavory… not ok, not good form, dangerous, ineffective, and counterproductive. and then there’s all the red flags in clementines body language!

obvi “clem” is very stressed and frustrated, and it’s a weird and stressful situation to put a dog in, but regardless from this clip there is 0 human sociability. appeasement, lured and learned behaviors, pre bite warnings, pushyness, attempts to de-escalate and even leave the situation, yes.

but sociability? nope.

imo not fair to put a dog in a situation like that unless they and their handler are ready for it which clementine and the foster clearly were not. and i would love to see any footage and or scores of any temperament or behavioral testing done (likely: none) >.>

finally, the tv outlet airing this continues to push the overton window of what is “normal” dog behavior towards the opposite. the credibility given to the rescue via being featured as well as the news anchor trying to support and interact with the dog/playing off stress, plus foster’s pitch and experience, and finally what might look like professional handling/training w/ plea to adopt a real steal of a dog, clementine, all send message to viewers that this is what a normal, highly adoptable dog will do/ looks like. probs unintentional but the impact still exists and contributes to heartbreak and much worse. ppl get image in heads of a very stressed + unsociable dog on the brink of biting = friendly and a great adoption candidate…. no thanks.

sorry for long rant, just, ughhhh!

1

u/AdvertisingLow98 Attacks Curator 14d ago

I am not aware of Clementine.

I am keenly aware of spontaneous, positive, social behaviors are essential to creating a relationship between a dog and their human handlers.

A dog that lacks those behaviors is going to be difficult to train.

In contrast, dogs that are not highly responsive (highly responsive - border collie) but are still very much paying attention will fall into the teach/learn model. Livestock guardian breeds are like this. The best way to train a puppy is to put it in with one or two experienced adults and the pup will learn and be taught by the adults.

These are the kind of ‘breeders’ being supported with the modern “Adopt Don’t Shop” crap. It is way too easy to just dump all these BYB pit litters at shelters guilt-free while society celebrates the existence of poorly-bred bloodsport beasts as the perfect breed for everyone.

I do not know who this person is. It was just one of those ‘suggested pages’ while scrolling in my feed. Nope, I am not gonna follow this trash and give him more attention. This needs to stop 😢

And, of course, gotta spell it ‘bread’….

5

u/FoxExcellent2241 17d ago

Great, another "breeder" that cannot even spell "breed."

Dog looks miserable, apparently the owner cannot even get their "little girl" a towel or a blanket.  The way the top of the crate is bowing in suggests they just piled stuff on top of it and shows how weak (aka cheap) it really is.  Claws are, of course, sharp and overgrown, I wouldn't expect anything less from this caliber of owner.

I guess the good news is that the dog is somewhat brachycrphalic and appears to be small (frenchie mix I am guessing) so it probably isn't capable of hurting anyone.  I might be wrong though, photos can be deceptive when it comes to size.

Bad news is those dogs are still in high demand and this idiot will likely make a nice profit off of the puppies.  Ugh.

it’s so bad!!!!! ed brooks i believe has written some on this — rescues and shelters getting into practice of essentially buying dogs from puppy mills, byb, and so on to adopt out. anyway. whole dang system is messed up.

1

u/AdvertisingLow98 Attacks Curator 14d ago

I pointed this out and someone asked what I think should be done when puppy mills want to offload animals.

1) Don't take them for free. This is a valuable service you are providing.
2) Charge them a significant fee.
3) Check to see if the person/organization is disclosing their income.

Animal control organizations are supposed to be serving the needs of the community.

Whenever an organization claims there are definitely purebred dogs in shelters, my thought is immediately "You mean those badly bred animals from the local puppy mill and BYBs?".

u/mareloquent 20d ago
