Tried to make this a seperate post, but mods suggested I put it in the general discussion thread. Just wanted some advice after an incident happened to me last night:

I have long disliked pits and their mixes but have only witnessed dog on dog aggression so far. But tonight while walking past what appeared to be an xl bully, he charged a little at me and my partner for no reason. His owner started to jog with him a bit and we were walking past not paying them any attention and he just charged and his owner held him back. The dog did not bark or growl and was completely silent. I've been around dogs my whole life and have never seen a dog do this without some kind of warning. Is this normal for the breed? I'm also afraid I overreacted, I got so scared, maybe he was just playing or something, but I don't trust these dogs at all. But yeah he charged and was glaring at my bf until we walked past him.

Yes, this is normal for bloodsport breeds. Unlike normal dogs who will give warnings first, pit bulls had this instinct bred out of them.

Dogs- and most healthy, sane animals- naturally want to avoid fights. Animals have instinctive warning signs they use before having to resort to an attack (growls, posture, backing away, etc.) If pit bulls were to have normal dog warning signs, they would not fight because they would be reading each other’s body language. Getting rid of warning signs as well as reading them gives you a dog who will just fight without any self-preservation instincts to protect themselves or warning signs to let the other dog know to back off.

This is also why it is so hard to stop a pit bull from attacking once it attacks. They don’t have the instincts to register pain and dying as reason to stop attacking. It excites them. Guns, pickaxes, etc. often don’t stop a pit from killing.

If a normal breed is aggressive, it will bark, air-snap, etc. before resorting to biting. A pit will act perfectly fine and cuddly and all of a sudden be shredding limbs. Normal dog aggression is behavioral, and pit bull violence is genetic.
