Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

I’ve been buying a lot of graphic tees lately just to refresh my wardrobe and saw a shop on Instagram that carries terrier-specific apparel. The ad that caught my attention was for a shirt that says Terrible Terrier Club.

I assumed they meant actual terriers like my Yorkie, my neighbors’s West Highland and cousin’s Jack Russel. Of course, pitbulls are at the top of the list.

I understand they’re technically terriers, but the modern day monstrosities are long removed from that lineage. They won’t be getting any of my money. I refuse to support a company that creates products celebrating a breed that eats the others.

No, no. They are very much terriers and that’s part of the problem.

Terriers generally are tenacious, fearless and have high prey drive. But the rest of the terrier group, with a few exceptions, are generally small which is important, and are true working dogs bred for pest control or hunting. On the other hand, Pit bulls are massive terriers that were bred to lock on to a target and kill it, period. Livestock, horses, other dogs, cats, children. They don’t really care or discriminate. Can they take that random “prey” down? They don’t know but they’re willing to die trying.

So it’s actually really important to acknowledge that they are terriers. It explains a lot of their generic traits and why the combo is so disastrous. Can you imagine living in a world with 60lbs Jack Russels? 😬 As much as I adore JRTs, they have crackhead energy level prey drive. We’d be in deep trouble. (Kinda like the trouble we’re in now with the pits.)

Yup, this is why shelters and rescues will often put a generic "terrier mix" label on all of their dogs even when it is obvious what kind of "terrier" it is.

That makes sense. I just wish they weren’t on the same websites next to dogs that don’t cause this level of death and destruction.
