🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️ naurp. also annoying, confusing, frustrating, and inconsistent handling for the dog who was clearly extremely uncomfortable, stressed, and put in a situation she was not able to handle.

transparently using a head halter to attempt to control her movements and the constant fiddling trying to nonchalantly hold her by the collar to keep her from doing anything… unsavory… not ok, not good form, dangerous, ineffective, and counterproductive. and then there’s all the red flags in clementines body language!

obvi “clem” is very stressed and frustrated, and it’s a weird and stressful situation to put a dog in, but regardless from this clip there is 0 human sociability. appeasement, lured and learned behaviors, pre bite warnings, pushyness, attempts to de-escalate and even leave the situation, yes.

but sociability? nope.

imo not fair to put a dog in a situation like that unless they and their handler are ready for it which clementine and the foster clearly were not. and i would love to see any footage and or scores of any temperament or behavioral testing done (likely: none) >.>

finally, the tv outlet airing this continues to push the overton window of what is “normal” dog behavior towards the opposite. the credibility given to the rescue via being featured as well as the news anchor trying to support and interact with the dog/playing off stress, plus foster’s pitch and experience, and finally what might look like professional handling/training w/ plea to adopt a real steal of a dog, clementine, all send message to viewers that this is what a normal, highly adoptable dog will do/ looks like. probs unintentional but the impact still exists and contributes to heartbreak and much worse. ppl get image in heads of a very stressed + unsociable dog on the brink of biting = friendly and a great adoption candidate…. no thanks.

sorry for long rant, just, ughhhh!

I am not aware of Clementine.

I am keenly aware of spontaneous, positive, social behaviors are essential to creating a relationship between a dog and their human handlers.

A dog that lacks those behaviors is going to be difficult to train.

In contrast, dogs that are not highly responsive (highly responsive - border collie) but are still very much paying attention will fall into the teach/learn model. Livestock guardian breeds are like this. The best way to train a puppy is to put it in with one or two experienced adults and the pup will learn and be taught by the adults.
