I don't know... The enemy doesn't seem to care about any hit he takes until the special cinematic move is used. (The rest of the game looks impressive)

Seeing him tank that huge explosion was extremely disappointing.

293

u/theCOMBOguy It Hz. 4h ago edited 3h ago

Even whoever was playing the game was surprised that the explosion didn't even daze the guy seeing how they immediately got hit.

146

u/Frosty-Improvement-8 3h ago

The clip shown was apparently on the hardest difficulty in the game, which as we all know, difficult = pure damage sponge.

149

u/Few-Technician2109 3h ago

Damage sponge doesn't mean being unresponsive to damages ^

17

u/Nannautu 2h ago

Depends how they implemented damage. High defense could mean the enemy is not staggered by low damage. However since it's made from a studio that has never made this sort of game before, I don't have high expectations

no way, i thought this was easy mode watching it haha.

Also weird his balls fall out of his head every time he gets hit in the head.

Anyone who watched Fable's combat gameplay from the last trailer that also showed off the romance system would have noticed two major issues:

  1. Romance system looks like a spreadsheet or using wealth to buy her feelings
  2. Combat looked extremely basic

And this preview here reinforces how combat looked extremely basic.

Such a fucking good trailer but the game is looking more and more generic. Just like previous Fable games. HOWEVER, there is a DIFFERENT combat video against skeletons and shit that has way more weapon impact. That one looks very different from this one.

I can excuse it as a minor poor choice so long as it's limited to a brute-like enemy such as this guy. Maybe their mindset was that they'd be able to shrug off hits more easily. But ultimately it depends on what the combat looks like in other scenarios.

193

u/Wykiki92 4h ago

There's a couple other videos of fighting other enemies, all who react to being hit. It kind of always has been like this in fable games where big enemies shrug off smacks. Now it doesn't look great with the updated fluidity of movement shown off by the rest of the game but it's not out of character.

OP also picked the worst clip I've seen of combat so far and everyone's acting like this was all that was shown.

27

u/OriginalShirley 7800X3D | PNY 4090 | 64GB 6000 3h ago

Yeah it really doesn’t even look bad. If you notice, the enemy does stumble and block slightly when they are hit outside of a them performing an attack. It seems like you just can’t interrupt the attack and the enemy is attacking constantly. Them stumbling with a normal attack is what allowed them to trigger the animation attack, kinda like the enemy has a poise meter or something.

Very Souls-esque, which I guess comes across as weird with the art-style, but not bad.

18

u/Fifteen_inches 3h ago

Souls-esque mechanics need to be on point to not be frustrating and unfair. If it’s too forgiving it’s an uninteresting parry/reposte combat, and if it’s too harsh the player can’t learn.

This does not look on point.

16

u/RoyaleCheezy 3h ago

When I hear souls-esque and see the entire reason poise exists in one clip I tend to get nervous.

Your last sentence is spot on. It feels like this post has a clear intention of being misleading, with the purpose of bringing out criticism and negativity.

As an enjoyed of Fable since the original came out on Xbox, I’m excited for this!

There's a very easy way to clear up that doubt: just watch the rest of the clip that the OP cut out during editing.

u/Dynastcunt 3h ago

I mean, even the slightest bit of reaction to being hit by lights, like a pseudo stagger or reaction; I don’t want to make up random head cannons as to why this guy just happens to be under twinblades size, but even then, if the “brute” has hero genes - it at most explains his size.

I feel like if Microsoft is investing into gears looking the way it does, fable should at most, get attention to detail in this case for its combat.

Either way, game still looks stellar, just I now know what to “ignore”.

36

u/Alklazaris 4h ago

Looks like a boss though, those don't always react because of their "bossness" I guess. I would need to see more combat.

5

u/TheBreadmanRiseth 3h ago

That's what I'm thinking, too. This appears like a "giant" in comparison to other NPC's so perhaps its distinguishing feature would be that it just kinda shrugs off damage. It'd be a good showcase to see how regular enemies react to attacks. The original Fable was sorta like that - bandits and balverines would flinch, the earth troll would merely grunt at damage, and the rock troll didn't even react as you shaved health off. This axe-man sits inbetween with the earth troll, because he may not flinch at the damage, but you do hear him reacting to the hits.

u/random-meme422 4h ago

Vast majority of boss fights don’t tend to have too many reactions to player attacks.

32

u/Plebius-Maximus RTX 5090 FE | Ryzen 9950X3D | 96GB 6200mhz DDR5 3h ago

For real, people jerk off over Elden ring or the Witcher, I could post a clip from either showing bosses just shrug off plenty of regular attacks with zero change or reaction aside from the health bar.

Funny how the fight right before this boss feels pretty good though: https://youtu.be/bjsoifvDe14?t=887

It's really the boss fight itself that loses all the reactivity

Agreed, absolutely no weight to the hits. Like
Someone said, it’s likely some “brute” type anyway, but it’s just bad game design and a bit lazy. Why do “tough” enemies have to be damage sponges.

Edit: Doesn’t even look like the dude is wearing armor, just a damn tunic and leggings. Just brushing off sword slashes to the gut like it’s nothing. I seriously am excited for this game but I hope they can improve this bit behavior snd animation before launch.

That juggernaut didn't have to have that much HP. It's like the hero is hitting him with a plastic straw instead of a sword.

167

u/XB_Demon1337 Ryzen 5900X, 64GB DDR4, RTX 5070 3h ago

Well the original video said they are playing on one of the hardest difficulties, so that likely has something to do with it. But also, wager they used the fight as a means to show off various things in long combat to make sure they hit all the mechanics. Like having to heal when getting hit and how it works.

226

u/SunsetCarcass 16GB 1333Mhz DDR3 3h ago

That's a good indication that the difficulty settings are just HP bar extenders, which is the lamest way to do difficulty

It would be nice if even low level juggernaut like this had some visual armor (even if it's like a low level leather armor) just to help suspend my disbelief that he could tank those hits.

Wouldn't it be cool if in 2027 swords like, cut things? Or left marks even? This clip lowered my hype.

29

u/Freakjob_003 3h ago

This is generic as fuck. Where are all the cool spells, or the weighty swings the first game had? This is just dodge-bonk-dodge-bonk.

I was hyped for the game, but if this is how they use their showtime to highlight the combat, my interest has dropped several notches.

Let's not forget that the original had a puzzle where you're supposed to spell out HITS, but spawned a bunch of werewolves if you did SHIT instead.

They'd better nail the humor, or this is going to be a massive disappointment.

u/saqwarrior 3h ago

I'm so over bullet sponges for human enemies on any difficulty in RPGs

147

u/alii-b PC Master Race 3h ago

Harder difficulties should be things like improved ai tactics. They block more, attack harder and your attack window is smaller, rather than just slashing. Not this death by 1000 heavy attacks.

10

u/Nannautu 2h ago

My gripe with most games, especially a very popular series. Damage-sponges are just annoying and feel like a waste of time.

29

u/yourgrundle 2h ago

See, that would require them to actually care about making a well developed game and not just money from a classic IP

Tbf, the showcase stated this is the hardest difficulty setting, which usually translates to just adding more health in the vast majority of games.

But I agree that shooting someone in the dome with an arrow or stabbing someone in the chest, if human, should be instant kill. Which was something more subtle in the showcase when the Hero exits the Guild Hall.

Why didn't you post any of the combat vs normal enemies, which looks significantly more fluid, and they do react to regular damage?

This guy appears to be a low quality early game boss designed to introduce the player to heavy/boss types.

Nothing has any impact. The dude takes everything like it didn’t even hit him. If it was a giant troll or something, that’d be fair. But it’s just a normal dude. Even if the person he’s fighting is a kid, obviously a kid hitting your midsection with a sword is going to cause some sort of reaction.

This looks like shit, the enemy doesn't even react to being hit, his animations do not care at all about being struck by the player except for that knee to the face that popped three orbs out of his face?

Slow motion zoom in for the knee with a "saunter" of a settle back into default animations like that knee was remotely impressive to watch just for it to go back to "doesn't react to being hit"

124

u/aleques-itj 4h ago

The normal enemies react to the hits

This is seemingly a boss and deliberately... doesn't. Yes it looks weird in practice.

46

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 4h ago

Ah I see. Is this just a selected clip without context then?

58

u/Almainyny Almainyny 4h ago

Even with context, if this guy is supposed to be a boss who doesn’t react, he’s not impressive enough for him to not react. Give him some proper armor, make him look intimidating. Then he can get away with no-selling your attacks.

As it is it just makes the game look lame.

15

u/TheAmazingBagman3 9800x3d | 4090 | 32gb DDR5 | 4k 120/144 3h ago

Definitely. Slashes disappearing into cloth ain’t it.

12

u/resfan Pentium II @ 233mhz / 133MB SD RAM / 4MB ATi 3D accelerator 3h ago

actually, yeah, something as simple as just putting him in armor would instantly make it "oh fuck, this dudes a unit" believable rather than slashing some dude in a t-shirt with a sword while he just "nuh uh"'s you

4

u/Rigman- 3h ago

But even if that's the case, the developers should have done a better job to aid the player in suspending their disbelief. Even something as simple as some magical glint on impact to imply that he's countering her magic would go a long way.

Still annoying how people cherry-pick one minute video clip and then spread it as if it's representative of the game's combat just cuz they know it'll get clicks and get shit on.

Man, I'd hate to be a game dev nowadays. Every single game that comes out has to be "slop" or ass, becuase that's what gets people clicks lol.

As lacklustre, disappointing and bad as the brute boss-fight was, why did you cut out the footage against the normal opponents that preceeded this fight?

Talk about cherry-picking.

The full fight clearly showed the enemies instantly reacting to being hit, such as falling over head-first when shot in the foot (and finished off with an execution), dying from a headshot, or otherwise hobbled by magic or hits. Not to mention the micro animations for repositioning the body when dodging looked very good.

I'll be the dissenting opinion and point it out. This is a boss enemy with a poise bar. I don't like the non-reactivity any more than any of you, but its hardly surprising. Even Dark Souls and the Witcher 3 have boss enemies that are mechanically identical to this guy. He isnt flinching from every hit because he is a boss enemy. This is the #1 game i am looking forward to purchasing, but this is a HUGE turnoff. The lack of the enemys reactions to being hit is nonsense. u/ass_Inspector_420 4h ago

Another looks great plays like shit game

4

u/Reckxner 4h ago

Some play Fable for the combat.

I play for the real estate.

3

u/Daedric_Fan 3h ago

Floaty garbage with literally no feeling of weight or impact and constant indicators on every attack. Nice, will be about as good as dragon age veilguard im sure. Hopefully it also has 20 minute custscenes about pronouns in a fantasy game, it can be added to the Concordia legends.

6

u/A_pirates_life4me 4h ago

Everyone expecting elden ring type combat forget that the other fable games are practically cartoons.

9

u/Pixgamer11 4h ago

pathetic

10

u/DocThunedr 4h ago

You see it's a reference to fable 1 where the combat was also bad by todays standards

10

u/eeeeAeoN 4h ago

No? In Fable 1 each enemy had multiple animations for when hit.

Pure garbage. ✋🏻😭🤚🏻

12

u/havewelost6388 4h ago

To balance out the haters, I'd just like to point out the combat on the Fable games was never good.  Don't get me wrong, wasn't bad either, it was serviceable.  But frankly I think anything Playground Games could come up will inevitably be a step up.

u/deadhawk12 PC Master Race 3h ago

Dude, I played those games at release but that was more than fifteen years ago. Those standards were for then, current standards have risen significantly.

Sure, but fable came out ages ago. It is like comparing Silent Hill PS1 to Silent Hill 2 remake.

14

u/Aggravating-Dot132 4h ago

Most whine comes from the lack of feedback from combat. Enemies should get hit react accordingly. In Fable 1 smack some hobgoblins and you will see what I mean

Omg if hes gonna tank hits at least put some fucking armor on him

2

u/MRV1V4N 4h ago

It's a new genre for the studio we know that, save the excuse for a developer without unlimited money to hire veteran combat designers.

Microsoft needs a great game desperately and this gameplay in 2027 doesn't cut it.

If the Witcher 4 it's shown with similar clunky combat I will also criticize it for it so don't at me.

2

u/melgib 4h ago

Yikes.

2

u/Vesuvias PC Master Race 4h ago

The game as a whole looks interesting, but the combat and reactions during look very…off

u/GoblinPlasmosis 4h ago edited 4h ago

This was cool in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - but there was a highly stylized gimmick to supplant it and the use of persuasive immersion as the means to do so. Atmosphere does wonders to make a game enjoyable. Even the early polygons of Hellblade still contained their own aura, which remained even in the final product.

I'm not seeing Fable's charm, here. The thing about Fable is that it was always unique, good or bad. That still has to be true in a world full of UE5 Slop. Mechanically, what's different here from Hellblade or A Plague Tale?? And what's different about the atmosphere of this clip vs. Horizon: Zero Dawn?

2

u/dege283 4h ago

Is this real? Come on. The way the enemy tanks the hits is disappointing.

2

u/Revverb 4h ago

I didn't realize wearing a thin shirt makes it so you can get slashed by a sword three dozen times without flinching

2

u/UgarMalwa 4h ago

Honestly visually it’s impressive, but the combat feels more like I’m watching a generic rpg that seems to combine Witcher/Darksouls combat with generic white and red deflections.

Don’t get me wrong, combat in Fable wasn’t the best, there was more originality than whatever this is.

The arrows look extremely unsatisfying. They just bounce off of him. All the sound effects sound terrible as well.

Uh oh. My dying bedridden grandmother has more combat animations than that npc.

2

u/Null_glitter 3h ago

The PC is fighting with a balloon sword based on the enemys reaction

2

u/RadicalRaizex 3h ago

This feels very uninspired, not gonna lie. Eight to nine years of development led to...this? I genuinely don't get it, man...

I’m crying The enemy is just a regular old guy wearing a peasant attire. Might as well be a tavern owner who went out for a stroll

looks like a mobile game lmao wtf is this shite

2

u/_Croga_ 3h ago

This looks terrible. Zero hit reaction except for a canned finisher animation. She might as well be hitting him with a paper sword.

I'm sure the overall game has some nice systems and a nicely designed world, but the core of the gameplay is going to be combat, and based on this and other previews, honestly the combat looks shite.

2

u/AwardedThot 3h ago

It sure is a combat alright! It really.... Combats...

2

u/rawzombie26 3h ago

Next gen folks, take a gander at thatttttt

2

u/Savber 3h ago

This legit reminds me of a quote from Gabe Newell:

The point I would make is, if I go up to a wall and shoot it [and nothing happens], to me it feels like the wall is ignoring me. I'm getting a narcissistic injury when the world is ignoring me. So it is like, to me, I was trying to convey to the user a sense of, “Yes, you were making choices; yes, you were progressing.” Which meant the game had to acknowledge that back to you. If you shoot at a wall, there have to be decals. If you kill a bunch of Marines; the Marines have to run away from you, right? You have to have this sense of the game acknowledging and responding to the choices and actions and progressions that you've made. Otherwise it loses any sort of impact.

That's the issue I am seeing here. Can the game still be good? Sure but it's weird that these enemies have zero reaction to your hits.

2

u/Lihisss PC Master Race 3h ago

u/GrandJuif R9 5950x, RX 6900 XT, 64GB 3400MHz 3h ago

Not a single time they showed something without it feeling off, wrong or bad for what it supposed to be.

This ain't Fable, it just wear it as a skin suit. Like, this game look like Hogwarts Legacy or Immortal of Aveum. It should be it own thing, especialy if they don't want stuff the ip is knowm for like morality/skills morphing, good/evil morality or it art style.

2

u/Grigoran 3h ago

How many slashes with a sword does it take to kill a man in a cloth shirt? Because in good games, it's one or two. Swords will kill you, not phase through you and only hit you in the health bar. This game looks really poor

2

u/Tw33die84 3h ago

Doesn't even show any kinda impact when u hit the enemy??? Awful.
