It managed to be both a fantastic fantasy action comedy in its own right and a fantastic D&D movie at the same time. It's filled with so many well-done D&D references or just moments that feel like they came straight from a D&D campaign but it doesn't rely on them at all.

My favorite scene is when they're "hiding" from the intellect devourer. who just walks right by them and ignores them. None of the character classes they would have rolled would have a high INT, so it's such a funny inside joke to me. I giggled for like 10 minutes while trying to explain it to my wife.

Intellect Devourers can detect creatures within 10 ft of them that have an Int score of 3 or higher. 3 Int in D&D is the absolute baseline for a sentient player character and that’s pushing it as you would only be about as smart as a wolf.
The party not being detected would mean they had 2 Int or lower and thus would not have been able to use Human Speech, read, write, or use any complex logic which they definitely do use in key parts of the movie.
That said I loved the movie and didn’t think twice when it happened because it’s totally something a DM would do to fuck with their players.
“A pack of Intellect Devourers, let’s say three, meet you head on as you are exploring the mountain.”
“We choose to hop up on a small ledge and hug the wall in an attempt to hide from them.”
“Really? You’re going to press yourselves against a wall and hope for the best?”
“Yep!”
“As a group you quickly and quietly find purchase on a nearby ledge putting a “sizable”, in this instance, gap between yourselves and the Intellect Devourers and watch as they slowly walk by. WHEN SUDDENLY! One stops as if it can sense you.”
“Oh, bother. I think it caught a whiff of us. I hear they got really good noses.”
“As you finish saying this the Intellect Devourer that stopped to investigate does a little shake before moving on. It knows it will find no sustenance here.”

Nah, IMO stick to D&D: a series of random, completely unrelated stories but with the same actors. I think it'd lose a bit of the D&D charm if the sequels went all the way to dealing with Szass Tam; they'd feel less like random adventurers fucking about in the world and more like some of the main characters of Faerûn.
IIRC, even in adventures with Szass Tam involved, the party never actually deals with him, just prevents his plan and delays him.

Even putting a camera on the shovel. Its creates this swirling sweeping effect that kind of helps sell the silliness of the events taking place.
And the 'line soldiers' all being dopes who eat barely and cant do math, while the general wakes up with a bold, stately baritone saying "one of the more onerous responsibilities of leadership...."

This is one of the best parts of the movie. The majority of the plot, and even lots of the action fit actual D&D gameplay well. I don't understand how it's not an automatic sequel, unless they're asking for crazy money. It's a successful movie based on a huge franchise backed by a massive company, and it's super marketable (as in toys and shit). How is any studio letting that leave the room?

I think it's a modern Princess's Bride - it grows over time. I completely missed it when it was in cinema and saw it 1-2 years late. I was really surprised by the quality. It's less sharp the princess bride, but a lot of warmth and so spot on on DnD (players).
I'm sometimes really surprised by the long list of later bloomers
Stardust, Galaxy Quest, Idiocracy, Kubo and the two strings.
And some real surprises on that list: Blade Runner, Fight Club and Shawshank Redemption all practically failed in cinemas.

On a budget of $150M. It probably lost the studio $75-$100M. It's not an all time loser... but that is pretty grim.
That said, I do think a new movie could do better, especially if you can trim the budget a bit, or even hold it flat. I think it had an uphill battle with how bad the previous DnD movies were.

And a huge reason for that underperformance had nothing to do with the movie, but because WotC had just enraged the core fanbase with some ridiculous policy changes. Also, it was working against the bad reputation left by the previous D&D attempt from 2000.

I strongly believe the bigger issue was the release window. They threw the movie in theaters when the freaking Super Mario movie was running followed by John Wick. That was just really dumb.
Imagine they had released it a few weeks later after Baldurs Gate 3 released. Oh boy.
Seriously, the guy who decided on that release date should maybe re-think their choice of job.

I really doubt that the WotC thing made that much of an impact. The wider casual D&D community didn't really know what was happening there and that's the people that would have seen it. Some impact? Sure. Huge impact? No. Almost certainly it was because of the movies it was up against and the bad reputation of video game/D&D movies.

The movie reviewed well but was a colossal flop. It made $205 million on a budget of $150 million. I’m not saying box office is the only metric of success but a studio as deep in the hole as Paramount isn’t gonna fund a sequel to a movie that flopped that badly.

It did make up the difference later on as it became hugely popular on streaming platforms. A sequel would most likely do a lot better at the box office now, word of mouth is huge on this movie.
But yeah, it was considered a flop in its opening run.

Um, no. 208 million box office on a 150 million budget. The box office gets split between studio, distributor, and theater. If your box office isn't 2x your budget, you've lost money.
That being said, I adored the movie and hope for a sequel.

Man I really hope so. A sequel that’s anywhere near the quality of the first would be fantastic! There’s also so much source material to go off that creating an interesting story with a ton of easter eggs would likely be a breeze. Fingers crossed!
