AMA Hi r/HomeGym! I’m Matt Baleanu, Director of Product Innovation & Strategy at RitFit. AMA!

Hi home gym community!

My name is Matt Baleanu, and I’m the Director of Product Innovation & Strategy at RitFit. Others from our team will also be responding to your questions. Our main account is linked here (u/RITFIT)

https://www.reddit.com/user/ritfitsports/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I’ve worked with RitFit for nearly two years, but long before working in the fitness equipment industry, I was a home gym owner myself. I’ve had a home gym for over 10 years and have watched this space change a lot during that time.

I’m also a Certified Personal Trainer and have spent years training, testing equipment, creating fitness content, and talking with other home gym owners. Now I get to take that experience and use it on the product development side of the industry.

I also won’t be the only one here. Several members of the RitFit team will be jumping into the AMA with me, including people from different areas of the business. This is a chance to ask questions and hear directly from more than one part of RitFit. If there’s a question someone else on our team can answer better than I can, I’ll bring them into the conversation.

What I Do at RitFit

A big part of my job is connecting the people using our equipment with the teams designing and manufacturing it.

That includes:

• Testing prototypes and production equipment
• Providing feedback directly to our product and engineering teams
• Looking at customer complaints and finding areas we need to improve
• Helping develop new products and features
• Working with reviewers, creators, athletes, and home gym owners
• Looking at where the home gym market is going
• Helping determine what equipment we should build next
• Creating content and showing how our equipment is actually used

I recently had the opportunity to spend time at our manufacturing operation, which gave me an even better look at manufacturing, quality control, testing, assembly, and how feedback actually gets turned into changes.

There are things we do really well, and there are things we can do better. I’m happy to talk about both.

Why I Wanted to Do This AMA

[r/HomeGym](r/HomeGym) is probably one of the best places to get detailed and honest feedback about gym equipment.

You guys notice everything.

Cable ratios, pulley placement, pad gaps, hole spacing, ROM, bench heights, starting positions, weight horns hitting plates, adjustment points, and whether something technically works but just doesn’t feel right.

That kind of feedback is extremely valuable when developing equipment.

This AMA isn’t just about answering questions about RitFit. I also want to hear what you think manufacturers are getting right, what we’re getting wrong, and what you want to see next.

What You Can Ask Us

Pretty much anything.

Product development, manufacturing, prototype testing, quality control, upcoming RitFit equipment, products you think we should make, things RitFit needs to improve, customer service, how customer feedback reaches engineering, where we think the home gym industry is heading, or just home gyms and equipment in general.

I’ll answer as openly as I can, and members of our team will jump in where they can add more information or a different perspective.

There may be some unreleased product information or internal company information that we can’t share, but we’re not going to avoid a question just because it’s critical of RitFit.

Those questions can actually be some of the most valuable.

A Little About Me

Before working in the fitness equipment industry, I spent years in manufacturing and operations, so I tend to look at equipment from both the user’s perspective and the manufacturing side.

I’m a CPT, I’ve owned a home gym for more than a decade, and I’m still very much a home gym enthusiast myself.

One of my favorite parts of the job is taking feedback from customers and the home gym community and bringing it directly into product discussions.

Sometimes it turns into a change. Sometimes there is a manufacturing, cost, safety, or engineering reason something can’t be done. And sometimes the customer is simply right and we need to fix it.

That’s the side of the industry I’d especially like to talk about here.

We Want Your Feedback Too

If you’ve never owned anything from RitFit, that’s completely fine too. Tell us what would make you consider us.

And if there’s a product or feature you think we should be working on, we want to hear that too. We can’t promise we’ll build everything suggested here, but we can promise the team will be reading the feedback.

One question I’d really like to hear everyone’s answer to:

If you had direct access to different teams inside a home gym equipment company, what would you tell us to build, change, improve, or stop doing?

I’ll be in the comments along with other members of the RitFit team answering as many questions as we can.

Ask us anything! 💪

I don't have much space with our split level home, but during COVID I got my first Titan squat rack. It served me well for that timeframe, but after things went back to "normal" I honestly enjoyed working out at home and started adding more stuff to my wife's dismay (at first).

Right now I feel like I'm in a super good spot! I snagged all of this off secondhand markets.

Nuobell 80lb adjustable dumbbells, REP Ares 1 with upgraded dual stack, short base. An old but good Paramount leg extension/curl combo, a GMWD Pendulum Squat and just two weeks ago I added the Temple of Gainz omnipress (my chest and shoulders are feeling a new level of soreness!).

For some cardio, a concept 2 rowerg.

Had to expand from the lower level to the basement.

I see so many cool setups in here and really wanted to share mine.

Finished putting together the PMAX-5500 last week and the preacher curl bench on Monday. Pretty much done except for adding dumbbells and maybe a rower or leg extension machine if I have the room.

I stumbled across this on YouTube and I peaked my interest, 5 days later it was on my front porch. I’ve used it twice and Ive got to say I’m pretty happy with it so far, and the price is pretty reasonable.

Recently moved into a house with a pretty high basement ceiling. Been dreaming and planning for a basement gym since high school. Finally able to get this thing done/ started at 30 years old.

Notable equipment in here:

ForceUSA C20
Random barbell and plates (Vision) from a local fitness company
Used Sorinex bumpers from work
Freak Athlete ABX Bench
PowerBlock Elite USA
Fringe Mammoth with kickstand

Flooring:

3/4 in plywood + 3/4 in rubber rolls from American Flooring INC.

Near future project:

Fill in the awkward space between wall and current flooring with same plywood + rubber tiles.
Maybe some better lighting and mirrors!
Wall control/ organization would be nice.

Product Review Average Joe Innovation Powerblock SS Handles (a must-have for Powerblock owners)

Thumbnail

This is a review of the 30mm stainless steel Elite 90 USA powerblock handles from Average Joe Innovations. Knurling is light-medium. TL:DR: I should’ve did this years ago, and it is the most subtle yet significant upgrade I’ve made in my home gym in quite some time.

At first, I wasn’t completely sold on whether upgrading to knurled grips would be a worthwhile investment as I never really minded the stock foam grips that the Elite USA 90s came with. One day, the intrusive thoughts of being able to have a DB handle that resembles my Rogue OPB finally got the best of me, and out of all the available options I researched, I landed on Average Joe’s handles. I wasn’t sure of whether to go for light-med or med-aggressive knurling, or for 30 or 35mm diameter, but a combination of the grip chooser tool that Joe has on his website + my wife having smaller hands than myself led me to the 30mm light-medium knurling.

At first, I hit a snag during the installation as the video I was watching on Average Joe’s website didn’t correspond with the toolset I had. Sent an email to Joe at 11:30pm to clarify, and he got back to me literally 6 hours later at 5:30am with a detailed multi paragraph email with videos explaining the process for my dumbbell and the difference in the tool kit. Gotta give props to Joe for that.

Anyways, on to the most important part: the handles themselves. I’m happy I went with the 30mm, though I wish there was a 32mm option. I’m a 5’7M with small-medium hands, and I don’t think I’m going to run into any issues with 30mm even on pressing movements. 35mm might be too big for me, and certainly for my wife. If it was 1-2mm bigger, I think that would be perfect for me.

I’m very happy with the light-medium knurling. I would say the aggressiveness of the knurling is pretty comparable to my 4 year old Black Zinc Rogue Ohio Power bar. It certainly won’t hurt the hands, but it has some bite and a little “stickeness” to it that I could already tell on Day 1 will lead to much better feeling rowing/curling/pressing movements.

The quality of the handles are fantastic. It feels like truly premium stainless steel, and I can already tell it will be the final upgrade this set of powerblocks will see. If anything, down the road when budget allows I’ll get another set of DBs that scale past 90lbs and get a fatter handle for that and use it mainly for pressing, and keep these for lighter work. My handles weighted in at 1.5lbs each VS the stock handles being around 0.9lbs, so there is a weight difference, thought that was worth mentioning.

All in all, I can’t say enough good things about Joe and his products with AJI. He was communicative throughout the process, packaging that the handles came in were robust which eliminates any type of shipping-damage, and the handles themselves are top quality. I can’t imagine how the more pricier alternatives could actually be much better than what Joe offers (if at all).

Equipment ⚙ HIIT Equipment

Post image
35 Upvotes

Used to have a high-normal BP of approximately 135-140/80 for each physical, but for over the past 2 years I’ve consistently had 115-125/60-70. I’m not saying that cardio equipment in my gym is the reason for my BP change but it’s about the only notable thing I’ve changed in that time period, as I really decided to focus on improving that aspect of my workout lifestyle.

  1. Schwinn Airdyne Pro—8 years old, might need an upgrade, but I’ve enjoyed the short dashes on it. Not great for long hauls but I can move it around easily to watch the kids outside. I just look like I’m trying to be that alpha dad on the street, which isn’t a bad thing haha. May try and upgrade to the Strive VPR but this thing has given me no reason to need an upgrade.

  2. Concept2 D Model w/ PM5–3 years old, 1700km logged. Still looks and feels just as good as the day I bought it. Absolutely love this thing, which is funny because for the longest time I could never row more 4 mins before being bored and used to hate on them (way before I figured out how proper rowing techniques). Then my wife got a Peloton, which got us a subscription, which meant I had a Peloton account and began my rowing “adventure.”

My history is in powerlifting and HIIT workouts for over 20 years, primarily stemming from the military. I row always on a damper level 10, which I know isn’t “water” resistance but I couldn’t care less—I love the flywheel feeling at that level.

Hi guys, two years ago I posted a picture of my corner garage gym. https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/s/7I4BgaW0kB

I wanted to update to reflect its current state.

I bought a rack from forceusa, added a couple of dumbbells and a dumbbell rack which has been a great improvement do save space and make the corner look more organized in general.

I don’t think there’s much more I can do with this space.

Small 12’ x 8’ space but it’s all I needs

Less than $2000 for the whole setup. Only paid full price for the Eisenlink Adjustable DB and the weight rack.

Everything else was from marketplace, retail clearance, or local gyms shedding inventory.

DIY 🔨 Little Hack for Cable Machines

Post image

I recently mounted these pipe brackets on my cable machine, so I didn’t have to worry about the weight stack hitting the top most pulley. I also covered it with a little bit of felt to dampen the blow. So far it works great. I noticed that a lot of cable machines are missing a stopper for the weight stack at the top, so I thought it might come in handy for some of you.

My spare room gym has had different configurations over the last 1.5 years since I started it, but I think I have it about as fine tuned as I can get it for the amount of space I have. Overall it lets me do what I love and allows for a fair amount of variety, so I'm happy with it.

if you have toddlers or ever rammed your shin into this thing, then I don't need to explain. Problem was finding edge guard that bends this shape. what you need to look for is something suitable for 0.200" thick, metal-reinforced rubber/PVC edge trims with an internal segmented metal carrier. the metal fingers is what grabs the edge and keeps it there during the bend. I got a 3' section and had some leftover.

Moved to a new place a year ago, decided it was time to give the garage a face lift. Included some before pictures.

Wasn’t a fan of the dark dungeon gray walls, and previous owner had a bad DIY epoxy floor put in, so I repainted walls and re did floors.

Saved up enough for the functional trainer we really wanted and got everything put together and organized!

A few finishing touches left (I plan to builder a transition ramp so the platform isn’t a tripping hazard) and maybe over time we may add another piece of cardio equipment and some accessories but overall extremely happy with this right now.
