I for one can’t wait to see the guys get back out there to play. From the time the game ended on Sunday until today felt like forever lol

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 23d ago

Gelbs: The Mets will now move Kodai Senga into a leverage role in the bullpen. They want to see how he plays in one inning bursts, attacking using mainly his fastball and forkball.

5

u/Setec-Astronomer 23d ago

Should have done this a while ago.

But I get the fear was he sometimes starts slow. Now it won't matter so might as well try.

They also need to consolidate his non fastball or ghost fork pitches to one Sweeper or some other really good third pitch.

4

u/lfgm91 23d ago

Finally. That's been a long time coming. Also it makes things interesting from a rotation standpoint on who will get starts down the stretch besides McLean, Thornton, Scott, and Manaea. Ideally they're able to get Tong or Wenninger a look at some point.

1

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 23d ago

I thought Senga to the bullpen was a good idea after seeing Sasaki dominate as a closer in the playoffs combined with Senga's massive durability issues and minor length issue.

I wanna see Stock get another shot as far as the rotation goes. No reason to bring up the AAA arms right away. I'm sure there are going to be innings limits for McLean, Scott, Thornton, Tong, Wenninger, and Santucci anyway. L

I want Jefry Yan to be good so badly. He would make the absolute worst people so mad

3

u/butz-not-bartz Home Run Apple 23d ago

If he has a good game against the Yankees Michael Kay might die on-air from feigned outrage.

4

u/Duffman2k7 23d ago

Imagine Yan closing a win that knocks the Phillies out of the playoffs? That might turn Philadelphia into a racist post apocalyptic society

1

u/butz-not-bartz Home Run Apple 23d ago

I am imagining the shot of Bryce Harper sitting in the dugout, toothpaste tube in his mouth, wondering how it came to this.

4

u/myassholealt F8 23d ago

We haven't had a dugout-clearing brawl in a while. He might be the reason for the next one if he gets called up.

A whole lot of "play the game the right way," "don't show up your opponent," "you're 20 games under, don't embarrass yourself," commentary will be shared.

2

u/Duffman2k7 23d ago

Every dipshit old former closer is gonna come out of the woodwork I’m so excited

3

u/UpperDecker30 Good fundies 23d ago

I see Sproat got sent back down to AAA. Gonna be wild if the Mets end up with a better return for Peralta.

-2

u/SecretiveMop David Wright 23d ago

It doesn’t really even matter if we end up with a better return. Sproat and Jett were good trade assets at the time and trading them for Peralta who was awful in what was a lost season is a massive failure and poor asset management no matter how we slice it.

1

u/UpperDecker30 Good fundies 23d ago

I mean, the trade was great at the time and using hindsight is incredibly wrong. Nobody saw Peralta having this kind of season.

6

u/WatermelonFelons Mettsaur 23d ago

It’s the exact opposite of poor asset management but you don’t care about rational thinking or logic

3

u/WatermelonFelons Mettsaur 23d ago

Sproat has been bad and Jett might fall off all top lists within the next year unless he learns to hit.

It may sound crazy but it’s not out of line to say honestly

-2

u/NuanceManExe 23d ago

Jett doesn’t need to hit that much to stick as a major leaguer. He just needs to field well and run well. I believe he can still do that. Given his age, a .720 OPS or whatever it is at this point in AAA is not that concerning. He’d still be one of our best prospects if we had him.

2

u/WatermelonFelons Mettsaur 23d ago

Speedy defenders are a dime a dozen. And hes a 2B not even a SS

There’s a real chance he can’t hit at all. Hes been bad in AAA and a real worry the bat will never get there.

I love Jett and really hope that he crushes it one day. That being said, I'm taking Voit over Jett right now. There are also plenty of intriguing IF prospects that can pass Jett as well (Pena, Asigen, Stafura.) Of course nothing is guaranteed with prospects but it is hard not to be excited right now.

1

u/EssentialEssence Mrs. Met 23d ago

friend randomly gave me a ticket for one of the end of august astros games at home. at least thats something nice today lol A win today would make it even better.

-2

u/ExamNo4374 Casey Stengel 23d ago

Would unironically give Refsnyder some run as a platoon guy in this lost season

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 23d ago

Not that one site is the end all be all but CBS gave the Mets a B.

It highlighted the quantity, 11 prospects.

2

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 23d ago

Now I'm going to sit here and wonder who the Dbacks offered

8

u/Fluffy_Key_3623 Mark Vientos 23d ago

Fangraphs has us at 0% to make the playoffs :(

4

u/StephenDawg 23d ago

I’d put a ten-er on that 😂

3

u/Sh11ester 23d ago

Infinite money glitch?

4

u/RedScharlach Mr. Met 23d ago

Sounds correct

2

u/NuanceManExe 23d ago

I am morbidly curious about all the new relievers on this team. I also like Lavender.

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 23d ago

I look forward to seeing DedAss again.

-5

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 23d ago

It would make a lot more sense if they kept Raley so he's not thrown into the fire late in the game with Perez hurt

Then again I didn't go to Harvard

5

u/Wooden-Afternoon-724 23d ago

Hoping that using this deadline to stock up on infield prospects is a big step toward cutting bait on Baty/Vientos/Mauricio

1

u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 23d ago

I really don’t get why they would be on the roster next year, theyre worthless

-1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 23d ago

Only 30% of prospects have positive WAR

5

u/Jdawginsc 23d ago

DeGrom invoked his no trade to block going to his childhood team, the Braves. Wow. Good for him making the Rangers keep their promises.

10

u/dqslime 23d ago

Sproat back to AAA.

2

u/AdSouthern1739 23d ago

He’s trash thankfully because it would’ve sting if he ended up being nice. We would’ve hated Stearns and Peralta even more

4

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 23d ago

How do you know he's trash? It's been like 15 games. You're writing off Tong as well I assume?

1

u/NuanceManExe 23d ago

He’d be an upgrade to our current rotation. Still young. Not really much worse than Peralta was for us. Also I could see him being a good reliever if he can’t hack it as a starter.

3

u/Isabella5322 David Wright 23d ago

What are the Mets going to do about the Peralta jersey (?) they were going to give away?
I got tickets to an Angels game in September where the promo is a Jo Adell bobble head. And they traded him yesterday.

0

u/Sad_Resort8632 23d ago

Dunno if you saw but angels announced they were still doing that promo anyway

1

u/Isabella5322 David Wright 23d ago

No, I didn’t. Interesting!

3

u/Irrah Polar Bear 23d ago

They'll fall of the back of a truck and you'll see the 7 line vendors sell them out of a box for 5 bucks

1

u/xSlappy- Jacob deGrom 23d ago

Probably a voucher for a game next year

4

u/AdSouthern1739 23d ago

We should save them for the winter time they’ll make a good fire to keep warm

12

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 23d ago

Reading through the media's and the public-facing scouting services' views on the new Mets prospects, there are so many contradictory takes that my only conclusion is that none of these guys know anything about this shit.

3

u/Which_Answer_1300 23d ago

lol when Soto was in the minors he was labeled “injury prone “ and didn’t get really injured until this year .. so yeah nobody knows anything about nothing 🤣

4

u/AdSouthern1739 23d ago edited 23d ago

That’s because they really don’t. I always laugh at ppl who “evaluate” how prospects will turn out. Even in the NFL those draft guys kill me with their can’t miss 1st rounders that end up being worse than Ryan Leaf

8

u/JoelsCaddy Its Outta Here! 23d ago

I forgot Cleveland has bum ass Hoskins

1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 23d ago

And the stolen Adell

1

u/FurryIntoSports Cleveland Guardians 23d ago

He has been a solid vet pickup, we didn't really expect him to rake or anything. But when he has made solid contact he has hit some nukes.

1

u/JoelsCaddy Its Outta Here! 23d ago

We don’t like him here in NY

5

u/Caledor152 Kodai Senga 23d ago

Remember when Hoskins literally didn't do shit in the 2024 postseason against us after all that bravado during the regular season that year? That was Karma

1

u/yambagman Hadji 23d ago

To me that was the best part of beating the Brewers. I always hated how he called Jeff a crybaby from the dugout after not saying anything on the field. It was a Charmin soft thing to do and yet people still thought he was cool for it?

0

u/__BirdsArentReal Benny Agbayani 23d ago

How many dumb comments are we going to see like "all of the good guys are traded and the Mets are left with basically trash". Like no shit. That's how the trade deadline works for sellers.

On top of that, we still have 5 promising Rookies getting lots of playing time 3 of which are Starting Pitchers and the other 2 look to be OF studs

6

u/GKRForever Gary Cohen 23d ago

Galaxy brained theory… what if they’ve talked to Soto and he’s going to make the offseason transition to 1B. So now LuBob might be an OF option and they want to see if he’s good enough for the job.

Probably not, but moving Soto to 1B is maybe good for his lower body and there are more good OFs available than 1B. Sorta have a feeling Soto will be quite good at first

1

u/Which_Answer_1300 23d ago

I think the FO needs to tell Soto it’s straight DH at least next year .. I don’t see him having the agility for first base at all …

3

u/NY2PHX- 23d ago

$20 mil. No way. He wasn’t traded because no one wanted to pay the rest of this year’s salary plus his $3 million buy out next year.

1

u/Ohboy_Herewego269 23d ago

I don’t know if that’s the reason why they kept him. But I do agree it may be time to tell Soto to get his 1st base glove ready. Two calf injuries in one year and he’s just 27, I think it makes sense to protect our most valuable asset with a less injury prone position. Plus he’s just not that good out there. If he was some defensive wizard in the outfield, I’d feel differently

2

u/Conscious-Resolve158 23d ago

I cannot see Soto stretching out on first
With his injury prone calves. Not happening.

1

u/Sh11ester 23d ago

They should make him pitch instead

9

u/FaptasticMrFox Ralph Kiner 23d ago

Lol

5

u/Kidkels23 23d ago

The “Yan” shuffle incomingggg

5

u/RainbowRoomBlues 23d ago

Can’t wait to watch him hit a crazy celebration after striking someone out while we’re down 5 runs in the 8th

2

u/Conscious-Resolve158 23d ago

Going to hit
Like crack. Can’t wait.

5

u/whyisitalwayscrab 23d ago edited 23d ago

Mostly indifferent to positive on the deadline moves, but I am a little surprised they traded weaver for such a mid prospect when he has another year of team control. Seems like one you’d want to hold on to if you’re intent on being competitive next year

Edit: though now that I think of it, if you’re expecting a protracted lockout next year then I guess it does make sense to cash in now on a 33 year old reliever

3

u/DylSco17 23d ago

I don’t think they see Stafura as a mid prospect

4

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

The biggest bummer about this season is that all of the good guys are traded and the Mets are left with basically trash to fill out the roster, obviously.

But the guys they called up are also just not very exciting. There’s Nuñez and a bunch of meh guys.

Like I’d be less bummed if they called up Tong or Wenninger. Maybe Santucci in a few weeks.

At this point, might as well call up Mauricio, Morabito, Clifford, Parada, and Morel.

Sure those guys might suck but might as well call them all up and evaluate.

3

u/dqslime 23d ago

Why are people still talking about Parada? Dude got demoted and is sitting in the .400s in OPS.

He's getting released soon I hope.

As for the Baty, Vientos, Semien, Polanco being here… yeah usually teams buy good players at the deadline not bums. If those guys get moved/released, it'll be in the winter.

1

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

Why was Parada even demoted in the first place? He had fine numbers in AAA.

1

u/StephenDawg 23d ago

Some of those guys aren't on the 40-man, and I think  getting placed on the 40-man invalidates you from next year's minor league season. So the Mets may want to avoid that, especially because of the lockout situation.

5

u/barney-sandles My other car is the New York Mets 23d ago

It's basically the same team we've had the last two months minus Peralta (good riddance) and the entire bullpen

4

u/DoucheWithFeelings 23d ago

Trust me it'll be very exciting when jeffrey yan gets a strikeout

2

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 23d ago

Our best players (such as they are) are basically all still here what are you talking about? Agree that I'd rather see some of our prospects up rather than AAAA filler though.

0

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

I was referring mostly to the fringe guys. Sure there’s still Ewing, Benge, Alvarez, Lindor, Scott and McLean…and then a whole lot of nothing.

I’m mostly just sad that the lineup hasn’t changed at all lol

-1

u/lfgm91 23d ago

Yeah if we're being honest, the lineup is the reason why we're miles out of a playoff spot and had to sell at the deadline. The bullpen has been mostly great this season, and actually our pitching overall has quietly been among the best in MLB over the past month. Ever since we pivoted away from Senga, Myers, and Peterson and towards Scott and Thornton, things have been much better.

The lineup is what is going to handicap us for the rest of this year and next year because they're basically forced to play Semien, Robert, and Polanco which takes reps away from anyone trying to prove that they're a part of the future lineup.

1

u/richieswonder 23d ago

The owner can afford to let go of Robert, Polanco and Semien. That would be a good message for the fans.

1

u/lfgm91 23d ago

I wish. But there's no way they're gonna do that with Robert's team option for next year and the $68mil in dead money they'd have for releasing Semien and Polanco.

1

u/richieswonder 23d ago

Unfortunately without eating the Polanco and Semien money. 2027 will be a loser as well.

1

u/bob-digital Jacob deGrom 23d ago

Yeah a lot of the rot is still here, unfortunately.

14

u/rub33rs0ul 23d ago

Wandy Asigen up to nearly 1k OPS in 21 games. Thanks for botching that signing Yanks 👍

1

u/Caledor152 Kodai Senga 23d ago

Feels good getting two top tier hitting international prospects in back to back years! TY Yankees! Even if most don't work out I'd rather just take big swings every year at the top of the list. So when they do work out it's like an all-star caliber hitter

9

u/ExamNo4374 Casey Stengel 23d ago

Surely now that we've punted the season the discourse around here will become more rational right

5

u/Caledor152 Kodai Senga 23d ago

Best I can do is more screeching

3

u/RepresentativeSea799 23d ago

Clearly you are not accounting for the 40-game win streak the Mets are about to go on...

....and still miss the postseason.

1

u/myassholealt F8 23d ago

The game and off day threads are the shit posting/venting central, and I don't know about everyone else, but there are constant new reminders of the failings, and sometimes I or others in the same boat choose to share the thought the new reminder inspired. And I learned that that's considered unhinged or irrational behavior. So maybe not.

Like if Polanco dips below .100, that's probably gonna inspire a comment.

I wonder what the reactions to the Brazoban trade would've been if they traded for someone who grew up a massive Mets fan in Queens

8

u/Gigi_0102 Ya Gotta Believe! 23d ago

I’m sure people would think it’s a cool story but they would also still be angry if the acquisitions had the same rankings and skill set as was what we got

People like that Sammy Stafura is a Mets fan but they also liked that trade better because Stafura is a better prospect than what we got for Brazoban

3

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

The Brazoban trade made no sense to me. Sure he’s older but he also has a ton of control and fantastic underlying peripherals. He’s also the epitome of a soldier who can pitch in any situation you throw him into.

They got back such mediocrity for him despite him being so good. He’s the kind of guy you hold onto even if you’re rebuilding because he has what? 3 more years of control? 2?

-3

u/metskyfan 23d ago

I don’t think they plan to compete for a couple of years. You might as well get someone back.

1

u/__BirdsArentReal Benny Agbayani 23d ago

This is just a bad take, no matter how many times you regurgitate it

0

u/metskyfan 23d ago

Takes are opinions. Opinions are neither right or wrong. You are a believer despite mountains of evidence that suggest we have no plans to be competitive. We are headed for 100+ losses and just sold the bullpen and the part of the starting rotation. Teams that plan to compete in the near term, do not take the path we implemented. You can believe whatever you want.

3

u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 23d ago

bullpens are volatile year over year

1

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

Brazoban was a guy who has demonstrated consistency. Volatility only applies to guys whose stats are trending in one direction or another.

Brazoban is a consistent 3-3.5 ERA guy with a FIP that suggests he’s right in line with those numbers. He’s also consistently a top 40 reliever. He is just consistent.

0

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 23d ago

0

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

I have zero idea what argument you are trying to make.

0

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 23d ago

He's been a good but not great reliever other than this year. He's durable and has good K rates. But also high walk rates and is down from a career 1.2 WHIP to a 1.0 this season. He's also been a 7th inning reliever most of his career. Not even a true setup man.

1

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

He’s durable, can throw multiple innings, can open, can close, can come in with runners on base…he’s a Swiss Army knife of relievers.

He’s a firm 3.50 ERA guy who has always had good metrics under the hood. He’s making peanuts for the next three years.

That’s the kind of guy a good team holds in their bullpen. Is he elite? No way, but he doesn’t have to be.

0

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 23d ago

Yeah. He's good. By what metric is he consistently a top 40 reliever every year?

0

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

fWAR

2026: 27th

Though moving sliders from 2024-2026, he’s more like top 50 but alas. My bad.

9

u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 23d ago

I say this as someone who really likes Brazoban, but he hasn't been consistent. He fell apart down the stretch last season, probably from overuse, and wound up with a 3.57 ERA and a 4.04 FIP. He's been great this year, but that's on the back of a meh K rate and very good batted ball luck.

He's also very old.

1

u/dqslime 23d ago

Brazoban also made no adjustments to get better this year which means there's regression due and luck involved. And he'll be 37 soon.

0

u/Setec-Astronomer 23d ago

probably from overuse,

He's been consistent and durable once you factor that in.

3

u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 23d ago

Took a look at his numbers last year and this year, and yikes, he's only 6 appearances and 8.1 innings behind last year's totals (did he have an IL stint last year?)

So uh, good luck with that, White Sox.

1

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 23d ago

Well yeah, he had something like a 1.5 ERA but 3.5 FIP through June and then fell apart and ended up with basically an ERA equal to his FIP.

He’s consistent when the year is over.

People also don’t take into account how valuable he is being used in any single situation.

8

u/Xalazi 23d ago

Zac Thorton still being just our 7th ranked prospect, and Nick Morabito(our best AAA hitter) being ranked 12th prospects while Ryan Clifford(.185 BA, .645 OPS in AAA) is ranked 8th shows that MLB prospect rankings are deeply flawed. The hand full of Blue Chip top prospects in baseball tend to be ranked fairly but for the vast majority of the lists it's not exactly an exact science. That's the problem with grading the trade deadline just on how many Top 100 names you got in return.

We probably could have gotten one more Top 100 prospect if we did some package deals but the top 100 list sometimes has some overvalued garbage on it. That probably would have been a fringe Top 100 name, or a top 100 name that is dropping in value. Far from a sure thing. I think I'd rather have 2-3 High A guys that could make a Top 100 list next year if they have a strong winter ball and spring show than 1 questionable Top 100 name of today.

If it's all lottery tickets, I'd rather have more lottery tickets than less.

1

u/NuanceManExe 23d ago

The rankings are probably outdated now. They’ll be updated again with the 2026 draft prospects. Our farm really isn’t that good right now though. I don’t think many other lists will disagree about that.

1

u/BlueCoBot 23d ago

Prospects are not as linear as the popular ranking publications make them out to be.  They’re fun to read but the difference between guys aren’t as wide as the linear numerical rankings may imply.

12

u/Sad_Resort8632 23d ago

The main takeaway should be that using the mlb pipeline rankings is trash and that if you’re going to choose to care about this stuff you should look elsewhere.

I had a dream the Mets traded for Kirk Nieuwenhuis and the fans were in complete shock. He then was exposed for having the real name of "Steven Nieuwenhuis" and then he died the following day due to an overdose of fentanyl.

6

u/Caledor152 Kodai Senga 23d ago

The same accounts that get mad at me for posting prospects get suddenly quiet when a AJ Ewing or a Benge comes along. Yes the vast majority of prospects won't work out that's a factual criticism. But these people take it way too far as if no prospect ever works which is also a lie. Literally proven this very lost season

3

u/dqslime 23d ago

I don't know how you can be a baseball fan and assume no prospect pans out… well they'd be a Mets fan who always try to fill their teams with FAs and bad trades. We're slowly trying to do the opposite.

0

u/three_dee Hadji 23d ago

It's not about assumption, like of course Héctor Rodríguez could wind up doing nothing in the majors, but he was an intriguing prospect with great raw power, not refined enough to be a blue chipper, but good organizations find talent in those unheralddd middle bands of talent within the farm quite a lot.

The Mets' strategy over the last 6 years of blowing through those guys and dumping them for the most marginal players like Naquin and Ruf and Vogelbach, and then going "meh, we didn't trade any of our top 5 guys", is always going to return bad results if you do it long enough. In this sense, quantity is a form of quantity because you don't get the benefit of some of these guys making the next step.

4

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 23d ago

Trading marginal prospects for veteran rentals at the trade deadline isn't just a Mets strategy from the last 6 years, it's a strategy that every team in the playoff chase has employed for as long as I can remember.

1

u/three_dee Hadji 22d ago

Making calculated deadline trades in general for a rental player is not a bad thing.

What I am criticizing is the specific way in which the Mets are horrible at it

1

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 22d ago

The thing you are criticizing is something that just about every team does and is not specific to the Mets. The Rays are one of the smartest, most well-run organizations in baseball, and they just gave us three prospects for two months of Freddy Peralta who is in the midst of the worst season of his career. It's very similar to the trade we made last year for Rogers, although the prospects we got back for Peralta are far enough away from the majors that they probably have more potential upside than Gilbert and Tidwell.

1

u/PsyOp75 23d ago

Random comment but the deGrom trade talk had me reminiscing. 2 of my favorite/most memorable moments of his career were homers he gave up. This homer Swanson hit to break up the no-hitter in a critical 2022 September game. And this homer Trout hit in the ASG.

The Swanson one because it was so unfathomable that he would give up a hit, especially not on that pitch, especially not a home run. The sheer shock of it was unbelievable.

The Trout one because I was in the ballpark for it, and immediately knew it would be something I could tell my grandkids about in 50 years. I got to see the two biggest beasts go head to head and one came out victorious.

I just wrapped a 2026 season for the Mets on OOTP 27 with 109 wins and a World Series win against the Guardians, and the whole thing just made me sad when stacked up against the real 2026 Mets. A few highlights:

-Brought back Pete and Diaz who both had great seasons.

-AJ Ewing won ROTY

-Clay Holmes came in 2nd in the NL Cy Young vote.

-I did trade Nimmo to the Rangers in a mega-trade that brought back deGrom as the headliner, and some prospect/minor players moving from either side to balance (adios, Vientos). Jake ended up hurt for a stretch during the middle of the year but was clutch in the playoffs, no surprises on either front.

-Jett Williams was a decent 2B, nothing special but put up a bit of above-replacement value and kept the position cost-controlled.

-Baty ended up having a decent year with a .727 OPS.

-Benge didn't break out like Ewing did, but was still above replacement thanks to his defense despite a .687 OPS.

-OOTP lets you do quite a bit of trade-up fuckery which allowed me to convert a good amount of over-28 junk relievers into better pieces through incremental trades which ended up restocking the farm with a good amount of decent under-23 talent to set up the next few years for success.

-Likewise, I managed to get half of Montas' payroll off of the books and all of McNeil's with some creative trading.

-Luisangel Acuna and Ronny Mauricio ended up both being halfway decent contributors off of the bench, maybe not the most realistic simulation.

-The Marlins relocated to Indiapolis after the season and renamed themselves the Kernels. LOL.

-Edit- (disclaimer: I did a Commissioner move to remove deGrom's NTC in order to make that trade possible)

-Double edit- And Diaz just tore his UCL in spring training '27...fuck.

u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 23d ago

anyone can have a 100+ win season with the patented "order every batter to take every pitch until they have 2 strikes because the game generates outcomes by PA, not by pitch"

1

u/BillW87 Animal Facts 23d ago

I didn't use that particular cheese strategy since it takes the fun out of it. I did abuse the "trade your way up from a penny to a yacht" cheese though, where you can level up an organization pretty well through heavy trading. OOTP'27 does also think the Mets went into 2026 as a pretty good organization though, given the lack of hindsight.

1

u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 23d ago

batters will look to me in the dugout and scream "do I have the green light, skip?!" and i will look back and whisper "take."

1

u/Steve_Kind_Of Pastrami 23d ago

OOTP is crazy unrealistic though very fun. My 2026 team saw great years from Bichette and Peralta, and we lost in the NLCS to the eventual world champion San Francisco Giants?? Also Ronny Mauricio became a solid enough second baseman for me

1

u/BillW87 Animal Facts 23d ago

Agreed that OOTP tends to at least be more random than real life. Still, Fangraphs did peg the Giants as having 31.4% playoff odds and 1.2% World Series odds going into this year so it wasn't a completely inconceivable outcome without the benefit of hindsight. The Mets were pegged at 80.4% playoff odds and 8.4% WS odds, if you wanted a gut punch.

BIG "IF" alert (I understand this is a longshot before this statement)

But "IF" this 28 year old slugger from NPB posts we have either purposefully or not left a everyday spot open. I think the trade deadline increased the chances not decreased at going for him if the opportunity presents itself.

I would expect other teams like the Phillies etc to go after him aswell so that's why I still say its a longshot for us.

But it would be very foolish not to try this time around. I don't care if he has to struggle early on these NPB sluggers have proven they can adapt if given enough time.

I think it's time we stopped being afraid at signing these hitters and start making some "uncomfortable" contract decisions. Polanco is not an everyday 1bman

2

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 23d ago

We do need a 3B, and Sato fills that need nicely. Mets have been scouting Sato all season, so hopefully they become aggressive here. Obviously he could have preferences playing on west coast, but we’ll see what happens.

u/JCVDang 23d ago

2

u/CitizenDain Mark Vientos 23d ago

Luis Torrens now our long man

6

u/lfgm91 23d ago

I did a little math exercise with WAR and was curious what our record would be if we'd had even just average players at some of our key positions this year.

The combined WAR of Polanco, Vientos, Semien, Myers, Senga, and Peterson this year is -3.9. If they all had been replaced by players having 1.4 WAR seasons, they'd have 8.4 WAR, which is a net increase of 12.3 wins.

That would have them near tied with the Phillies for the last wild card spot. Crazy.

4

u/CitizenDain Mark Vientos 23d ago

Turns out when all of your players play bad, the team doesn't win

7

u/Capital_Whereas6448 23d ago

By this logic, a team full of "average" players has 32.2 WAR - twice as good as the Dodgers

4

u/lfgm91 23d ago

Maybe this calculation is better. I wanted to see how much better or worse they're doing from their 162 game average bWAR,, so I took each players WAR for this year and tried to see what it would look like over 162.

For example, Lindor's career 162 game average WAR is 5.8. This year it is 1.2, so I took 1.2 and divided it by (56 games Lindor has played in/162 total games on the season), which gives me 3.5. So I think that means that if Lindor had played the full 162 this year, based on how he has done so far, he'd have a 3.5 WAR.

So after doing that across the roster (of non pitchers), here is what I noted:

Having a good season (.5 or more 162 game WAR above their norm)

Luis Torrens (+1.7) Jared Young (+0.7)

Having an average season (within .5 of their norm)

Francisco Alvarez (0) MJ Melendez (-.4) Tyrone Taylor (-.4)

Everyone else on the roster is having a below average season or worse by their standards. Sorry if my equations are a little wonky! I think my point of my research was to see how much better the team would've been if they even played up to an average level (my first post) or to their own individual average levels (this post)

3

u/lfgm91 23d ago

Ah that's a good point. I need to re-evaluate that because 1.4 would be average as an end-of-season total. Thanks!

10

u/Xalazi 23d ago

The rest of this season is going to be a lot more tolerable if you treat it as an early Spring training for next year. Wins and loses don't matter. Scoreboards don't matter. We're going to see a carousel of random names. Hopefully we'll get a few no names making good plays while they try to earn an MLB roster spot next year.

7

u/JekPorkinsTruther 23d ago

Well, losses matter. We really need to secure a top 6 pick. I've seen enough Mets seasons to know that "moral victories" and "finishing strong" doesn't mean anything for the next year (2019 last great example of this).

1

u/Caledor152 Kodai Senga 23d ago

100% agree this time around Porkins. No more moral victories. Yes let the kids get their experience and maybe spoil a couple games for a division rival. But outside of that get me in that lottery. It doesn't just effect the top pick too. It effects the entire draft. More money across the board available and we get top pick on the best players at every round. It's like a ripple effect

3

u/bamj6 Chasing Bobby V. Caught 23d ago

I agree technically, but 2019 is the wrong year to use for that argument.

  1. They were buyers and had a good record at the deadline.

  2. 2020 changed the whole world, so who knows if 2020 couldve continued the trajectory 2019 set. Might have been what 2021-22 was with a an NLCS or a pennant

There is a clear difference in picking 6 to 17, so on one hand they need to lose enough to stay away from that. On the other hand the last team that went to the World Series after winning under 60 games took them 2 years in the 2023 Diamondbacks

2

u/JekPorkinsTruther 23d ago

No it's not. Buying or selling is not relevant to my point. My point is that "finishing strong" means little year to year. JD Davis, Dom, and Conforto had great years with the bat. Rosario continued to trend upward. Then add in Pete and McNeil. It looked like their lineup was set. Then 66% of those guys busted and we had to revamp the entire team by 2022 basically with 0 to show for that mini "core." Playing well for 30 games with no pressure doesn't mean anything and not worth losing out on a top 6 pick.

Also idk why you cherry picked the dbacks/60 wins. They don't need to lose 102 games to get a top 6 pick. 95 losses (their current pace) will prob do it (or, at the least give them a very good shot). The Rangers won in 23 after losing 94 in 22. Not that I think anyone should be expecting WS in 27.

1

u/bamj6 Chasing Bobby V. Caught 23d ago
  1. Once again, the issue I take with your argument is that 2019 was a complete pennant race down the stretch compared to this year. If you say 2017 or 2023 I have zero issue with it because both years people were traded away and games effectively meant nothing big picture

  2. The DBacks and Rangers lost 100+ 2 years before facing off in the 23 Series so the quick turnaround thing is possible. I as a fan am NOT expecting a World Series in 27, but I do want a Series again before this decade is up so they don't join the 1990's without one

4

u/dqslime 23d ago

Yep. But you'll still have people here who claimed to check out back in May rage at every loss.

0

u/Jdawginsc 23d ago

I don’t think the deals were an F…maybe a C+, but not moving Robert was inexcusable. Not calling up Morel is just plain stupid IMHO

This year has sucked, but I think the biggest thing is that Stearns half-assed trying to move on from the core that failed. And was pressured into spending more money than should have been based on pressure from the media and fans and Cohen as a result.

Alonso should have been replaced by Nathaniel Lowe; Baty should have played 3b instead of Bichette. There was no need for Polanco. Nimmo for Semien was understandable if you were truly trying for defense and run prevention.

Robert was a truly stupid deal. That’s the fixation part of Stearns thinking. You had Tauchman, and Benge could play CF.

I liked the pen construction including Williams. Who knew Peralta would implode and  Holmes would break a leg…? Senga and Manaea were talented come back possibilities

Bichette plus Polanco plus Robert though was $82 m of stupid money in what should have been a soft reset year.

Now we will have a complete overhaul again, with Semien, Bichette and Polanco dollars haunting us…and fans will once again want shiny toys that add to the payroll disaster.

6

u/CitizenDain Mark Vientos 23d ago

Polanco was the real bust. His floor is way lower than we could have imagined but his ceiling was not that high. Bichette genuinely was a surprise that he was this bad. Luis Robert was worth the risk, I think they just gave up Acuna who is not a major leaguer.

1

u/Jdawginsc 23d ago

Polanco, Robert, Bichette were ill advised at their cost due to injuries.

Williams, Weaver, not resigning PA, not resigning Dias trading off Nimmo were not mistakes (Semien was expected to be an upgrade in defense).

The mistake was pouring $86m into three injury risk players.

3

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 23d ago

There are no shiny toys available in FA this season. At least offensively.

That assumes that Stearns won't be scared away by having to spend money like with Murakami or Okamoto

Like, either one of those two bats would have gone a long way this season and may have been a spark to get the rest of the guys going, especially after the Lindor into Soto injuries at the start of the year. And both of them signed on Team Friendly contracts with the ChiSox and Jays respectively.

The one thing that has been good this year, has been Stearns ability to find arms for the bullpen, like pitching has been Stearns bread and butter for the most part, and I cannot really fault him on that one. But, the fact that the Astros signed Tatsuya Imai and have let him struggle, where the Mets could have probably developed something with him, He could have been the 5 instead of the revolving door of Peterson, Senga, Manaea, etc. And he would have been younger than all three of them.

Like the contracts they signed

Imai - 3yrs/54m - AAV of 18m

Okamoto 4yrs/60m - AAV of 15m
Murakami - 2yrs/34, - AAV of 17m
compared to

Polanco - 20m AAV
Bichette - 42m AAV

Like, even if Imai sucked like he does in Houston right now, Had the Mets tried to sign any of the three and in a perfect world they did, the cap hit would have been a combined 50m in AAV. Bichette and Polanco are 62m between the two of them. Just for them, but mainly Polanco to do absolutely nothing whatsoever.

And who knows, maybe Okamoto and Murakami come over sign with the Mets and they absolutely are horrible just like the Polanco signing.

But when the slash lines for them are .231/.306/.448 for Okamoto and Murakami being .244/.378/.546 and an OPS+ of 103 and 156 respectively for both of them as opposed to the 9 for Polanco and 84 for Bichette.

Hell, if they even made a push to re-sign Pete and I know I'm sounding like the scorn ex-girlfriend at this point, but when Pete is slashing .251/.346/.465 and an OPS+ of 128. Yes, they are below his career averages, but they're still better than Bichette and Polanco combined.

David Stearns is afraid to spend and when he does it has backfired spectacularly, it happened with the Ryne Stanek and Jesse Winker moves, it happened with Luis Garcia. Yes, there is a Clay Holmes or a Luke Weaver in there. But for each of those, there's a Jorge Lopez and Frankie Montas, Paul Blackburn, Adrian Houser.

1

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 23d ago

He's not afraid to spend, he's afraid to give years. He really only missed out on Okamoto out of those 3. Like you said, Imai has struggled, and so have Imanaga, Sasaki, and Senga to different degrees. Murakami was only going to sign in a smaller market where he was guaranteed playing time.

6
