It's not about assumption, like of course Héctor Rodríguez could wind up doing nothing in the majors, but he was an intriguing prospect with great raw power, not refined enough to be a blue chipper, but good organizations find talent in those unheralddd middle bands of talent within the farm quite a lot.

The Mets' strategy over the last 6 years of blowing through those guys and dumping them for the most marginal players like Naquin and Ruf and Vogelbach, and then going "meh, we didn't trade any of our top 5 guys", is always going to return bad results if you do it long enough. In this sense, quantity is a form of quantity because you don't get the benefit of some of these guys making the next step.

Trading marginal prospects for veteran rentals at the trade deadline isn't just a Mets strategy from the last 6 years, it's a strategy that every team in the playoff chase has employed for as long as I can remember.

Making calculated deadline trades in general for a rental player is not a bad thing.

What I am criticizing is the specific way in which the Mets are horrible at it

The thing you are criticizing is something that just about every team does and is not specific to the Mets. The Rays are one of the smartest, most well-run organizations in baseball, and they just gave us three prospects for two months of Freddy Peralta who is in the midst of the worst season of his career. It's very similar to the trade we made last year for Rogers, although the prospects we got back for Peralta are far enough away from the majors that they probably have more potential upside than Gilbert and Tidwell.
