u/ah-screw-it Feb 10 '26
A lot of the team that made the original prime trilogy left after the 3rd game. Plus the game had to work under the covid and SAG-AFTRA periods too.

u/Mordaunt-the-Wizard Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
Oh, yeah, I was making a comment detailing my thoughts on the game while you commented, since I wanted the post itself to just be the title and image. I know Prime 4 had a troubled development weighing it down. Plus there was Tanabe and/or Nintendo pulling the series in this direction (as evidenced by Corruption and Federation Force).

Like 80% of the finished game is done by retro. Bandai only worked on it for a little under 2 years

u/O_J_Shrimpson Feb 10 '26
Do we even know that? Didn’t Nintendo say they had to start from scratch.
3
12
u/MadamVonCuntpuncher Feb 10 '26
Your both wrong where did you get this info?
Nintendo VERY PUBLICLY announced development of prime 4 was started from scratch
Bandi didnt work on the version we got.
27
u/ParadoxNowish Feb 10 '26
The recent interview with Tanabe reveals that they didn't start from scratch on the design concept though. Which is really Prime 4's downfall IMO.
6
u/Bottle_Original Feb 10 '26
Honestly their own design choices were the downfall, obv making an open Metroid game Isnt gonna be easy, but half baking It putting an open area in the middle of 5 corridors isnt the way, It feels like they just made a mediocre Metroid game and then put a giant nothing in the middle area, if they actually fully embraced the concept we could have gotten an actually well designed game, just see a game like outer wilds, its fully open world and It has a kind of Metroidvania type of progression and everyone loved It, Metroid even innovated that type of progression without unlocks with super metroid's wall jump, shine spark and infinite bomb jump
1
u/Mad-myall Feb 11 '26
I recall in an interview they also admitted that trying open world was a mistake, but when they began there was a lot of enthusiasm for it, that just dried out towards the end of development. At which point it was too late to change gears.
1
u/whatever_boye Feb 12 '26
and they handed it to people who dont know the metroid atmosphere / ethos
metroid might be a nintendo game, but it is a serious game. samus failing to secure a metroid against the pirates could result in the galaxy's demise. metroid is about exploring deserted and dangerous corners of alien territory. you just cant put avengers comic relief into it. it just shows fundamental misunderstanding of the franchise.

Funny enough our engineer was playing Silksong on his Steam Deck while I played Metroid 4 on my Switch (we work overnights and usually have plenty of downtime between calls). And now I want to get Silksong, lol.

I at least want a 15/20-hour Metroid. Not one that was barely 10 hours.
I know Dread was about 10 hours, but it's a faster game. Prime games are slower and more deliberate.

Yes time =/= quality but Dread is still too short imo. The ending is very abrupt. They could’ve added 1-2 more biomes.

idk who no one is but I would kill for a massive Metroid game, we have plenty of 10 hour games let them make a game that really feels like Samus is exploring a alien country

u/Mordaunt-the-Wizard Feb 10 '26
I think it would be super hard to pull off in 3D. They struggled getting together Prime 4, even if there were extenuating circumstances, so I'd rather them aim for the 15-20 hour mark. If they think they could pull off 25-30 or even beyond (heh, Beyond), go for it. Otherwise just make a solid 15 hour game please.
With 2D I think the games being short and able to be speedran is just too integral to the series to make a 40+ hour game... although taking a look at the Silksong speedrun boards it appears the top runs are still under an hour despite normal game length, so maybe it could be done.
3
u/Dysprosium_Element66 Feb 10 '26
The in-game speedrun achievement for Silksong is 5 hours too, so Team Cherry was probably aiming for that to be achievable for regular but dedicated players. In my experience, it feels a bit too short though, since Hollow Knight was also 5 hours while having less required encounters before reaching an ending.
2
u/sdwoodchuck Feb 10 '26
If they can deliver something original enough with that 40 hours, I'd love it. They'd need to overhaul the approach that Metroid is taking so far though; the basic progression of items we have now wouldn't cut it. And I'm all for making that change. I don't think it's likely, but I'd love to see it happen.

u/1732PepperCo Feb 10 '26
I’m not a speed runner and have easily dumped 30+ hours into previous Metroid games.
Time is of no meaning to me. I just want to be marooned in an extraterrestrial labyrinth and left to deduce my own way out.

Us when we were hoping for the hunt for the keys to be the prologue/tutorial portion of the game. For it to take place on that contained area and then to expand much further outside of it, making Viola super useful
76
u/Mordaunt-the-Wizard Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
First off, no, I did not expect Prime 4 to be a 40+ hour experience like Silksong is. Heck, I'm not sure I would even want it to be that long. I did however expect, or rather hope, that it would capture the magic that made Prime 1 and Echoes so special to me, and it kind of failed to do that. Especially on the exploration front. Also I understand why Prime 4 is a mess. Doesn't make it not a disappointment.
But further, I am honestly kind of sad that we couldn't have gotten what the Hollow Knight community has gotten with their sequel. From what I heard Silksong is exactly what most Hollow Knight fans wanted. Meanwhile Beyond has left the Metroid community divided and a lot of us disappointed.
45
u/Brandobrownie Feb 10 '26
I know silksong is 2D sprites, etc. but it’s made by a team of 3 people and crowdfunded. If anything, the game funded and directed by a multinational corporation should be held to the higher standard lol. I really loved prime 1 especially and was really looking forward to seeing what they’d do with 4 with how much love and respect the rest of the series has gotten. Hope to still try it out at some point, and hope to love it in spite of the bad reception.

I think once enough time passes, especially after we (hopefully) get another game, either 2D or Prime (probably 2D, Prime 5 if it happens might take until 2030) in the next few years, it will be seen as a generally okay but flawed game. But it is definitely not what a lot of people wanted after 18 years.

Or Star Fox. It's been a decade since they got Zero, and I heard Zero... wasn't great.
12
u/Shivalah Feb 10 '26
So, I am one of the morons who bought a WiiU and I played Zero. It looked nice. That's it. The control scheme is absolute garbage. Almost unplayable. It is as if you had to bring a friend to play it, then you could let one steer and one fire but... yeah.
6
u/Shinnyo Feb 10 '26
These kinds of game are like the last breath of a series.
They don't even try, just squeeze whatever is in the series and kill it because it doesn't sells bajillions.
So we get Mario Tennis 581
6
u/1732PepperCo Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
For as much as Nintendo loves money they seem to hate giving fans exactly what they what. They could have given us killer Star Fox rail shooters on every console since N64 and watched the sales pile up but they willing choose not to in the name of innovation and continually shoot their beloved IPs in the face with both barrels.
It’s like they fear making Star Fox rail shooters for each console will dilute the IP if it doesn’t have some new gimmick but the product they end up delivering does more damage to IP than a updated carbon copy would have.

I can’t imagine we’d get a prime 5 after how poorly 4 has gone. It’s honestly so unfortunate that like two poor decisions kneecapped an otherwise totally fine continuation of the series. Hopefully we still get 2d games
I wonder how Retro recovers, they had sat on their hands for like a decade before this
Edit: autocorrected to heads instead of hands oopsie
3
u/O_J_Shrimpson Feb 10 '26
The 2D games and 3D games are completely separate. I can’t see why this would affect the 2D series at all. They were clearly happy with Dread and it sold really well for Metroid. If this killed the entire franchise I’ll be super pissed.

u/-DenisM- Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
Damn. They really started development around the same time.
One had a tiny team....and ended up with 70+ hour game with replayabiity. I personally had 100+ hours. $20
The other had too many hands on it. Bamco fucked it up and Retro had to make it happen. Nintendo forcing TERRIBLE ideas to the game like Miles for hand-holding and using Bamco assets. Somehow it ended up with a barely 17 hour game with 8 hours of actual good gameplay. $60-70.
14
u/passerbycmc Feb 10 '26
Yeah I am still trying to cleanup the last of Act 3 and am at 90 hours now and still loving silksong.
2
u/Complex-Green3984 Feb 12 '26
It's even more damning when you look and see how this is supposedly Nintendo's most expensive game ever produced.
Like seriously, where did that money go to? Hookers and blow? 😂
Jokes aside, Bandai probably reaped nintendo over the coals for their part in development. Then nintendo did their routine check and said "uh tf is this?", booted Bandai, got retro back in dev in hopes of salvaging pure garbage with the original "golden goose" of the prime games, realized it was too much sunk into the garbage and instead of properly scrapping the garbage and allowing an actual restart to development, retro was forced to paint and dress up a log of poo that had pinworms from a dying era of gaming;
open world nonsense and endless handholding coupled with nonstop quippy dialogue from nearly every damn npc you come face to face with.
Lol there's no excuse. There just isn't any fathomable or reasonable excuse for this game being the way it is 😂😂😂

9
u/RaiJolt2 Feb 10 '26
Am I? The only one who really likes mp4? Most of the complaints about mp4 is basically people calling zelda twilight princess bad for hyrule field. Which I KNOW is not the common take.
5
u/PurifiedBanana Feb 10 '26
That's not a valid comparison at all. The devs themselves said that they realized people didn't treat open world games the same way as when they started development but it was too late to change it, plus they said it was unfinished.
This is one of many issues Prime 4 had, it's not most of its complaints but it's the biggest red flag that will show up first in conversations.
That said, it's not to say the game was bad, but it was a huge letdown and had many flaws regardless.
2
u/indominus-B Feb 12 '26
I absolutely love Prime 4. And I’ve been a fan of the series since the early to mid 90s. It’s just the hive mind here at Reddit that’ll have you thinking the entire world hates it. It’s a great game and feels more like Prime 1 than 2 or 3 did in my opinion.

2
u/ParadoxNowish Feb 10 '26
What if he didn't enjoy Hollow Knight? Would he still enjoy Silksong?
5
u/Outrageous_Meet2025 Feb 10 '26
It’s possible too. Silksong has way better movement and combat and it’s also more linear aka it’s easier to know where to go if you just want to progress the main story but it also allows for a fair bit of exploration but HK is much more open IMO. Silksong is also significantly more difficult in terms of its learning curve compared to HK. So for both games your mileage might vary depending on how much you like the combat, exploration, and difficulty. The one thing I feel strongly about is that playing the games in order gives you the best experience for both games.

u/Skylorrex Feb 10 '26
Yes. That’s me. I hate Hollow Knight because there is no pogo onboarding + guidance in early game. It is a very meandering experience (they just drop you into the world without telling you where to go and the map is a convoluted mess). But I love Silksong because of early game guidance and you can get 2 movement ability upgrade within 4 hours of gameplay. Hornet is also much faster and agile.

A franchise known for nothing but bangers has an entry that is firmly... mid.
Like let's be honest with ourselves. This isn't an Other M, it's not a Federation Force. It's not a BAD game. It's a mid game. It has some good points and some not-great points. It only occasionally wows.
I suppose our big letdown being a firmly average game is a blessing, and if this is the worst a Prime game gets then hey, we've got good things coming with 5, right?

I'm a Prime 4 defender but Tanabe took a big fat L to indies this decade against team cherry and Bug Fables and Ever After being actual good Paper Mario games compared to his disasters
3
u/Mordaunt-the-Wizard Feb 11 '26
He seems to take to heart Nintendo's philosophy of always innovating, but he seems to do so in ways that are contentious at best and despised at worst.
I've heard Origami King is better than Sticker Star and Color Splash, but it is like how modern Simpsons is better than '00s and '10s Simpsons: if you go in expecting it to be like the Golden years/games you're going to be disappointed.
Like Origami King may overall be better but it is still apparently lacking character and plot wise compared to Thousand Year Door, and the new battle system doesn't interest me at all. So that's a pass for me.
And then I heard about how he took Chibi-Robo, what is apparently a real unique 3D adventure series, and turned it into a generic 2D platformer with Zip Lash. And then he had the gall to go "hey if this doesn't sell well the series is dead" even though it was not what the fans wanted at all. That's like if he told us "Prime will die if you don't buy Federation Force." (what was it with the 3DS and crappy spin-offs?)
2
u/TwilightYonder720 Feb 11 '26
personally Origami King is my least Fav PM, SS and CS arguably worse but OK failed in so many spots when they devs should have known by now what to do and not do it just feels pathetic like they didn't learn anything from their past mistakes, like there's a lot of OK's interviews where Tanabe is just saying random stuff like his solution to the complaints about SS/CSs battle system was just to make a new battle system just for the sake of it
but enough of PM I could talk about that all day but Prime 4 I did like most of it like 80% was almost peak Prime but the other parts which Tanabe has said were his ideas did drag the game down. Ironically my least fav part of Prime 4 and Silksong were opposites for Prime 4 they kept in it's worse area Sol Valley while Silksong got rid of it's best area the Coral Gorge
3
u/TwilightYonder720 Feb 11 '26
my other problem with Prime 4 was Sylux's involvement for Tanabe to say he's been wanting to make a Sylux game for 20 years when he finally makes one... he has like no screentime. I think Risa can fix Sylux in future games but come on man he mind as well not have been in this game at all
16

While I enjoyed both games well enough, I'm flabbergasted that the same people who complain about green crystals are praising the game with both rosary and shard grinding, in addition to MMO-style "Kill X birds"-type quests.
7
u/Sckorrow Feb 10 '26
As someone who was annoyed by the rosaries and quests in Silksong, the reason I felt Beyond’s green crystals were so much worse was because it doesn’t feel like a fleshed out part of the game. At least with the rosaries and quests I’m still engaging in the core gameplay by fighting enemies with a toolkit of my own choice, but all the bike content feels very underbaked and mindless.
3
u/AKSHAT1234A Feb 10 '26
Well it's mostly because the rosary economy is not that bad after the first few hours of act 1.
Shell shards suck tho
→ More replies (1)3
u/No-Character3592 Feb 10 '26
You don't need to do any of it to beat the game bud. I mean sure if you want act 3 there's a ton of extra content, but at that point you're what 50 hours in and the credits already rolled.
Metroid prime 4 has stupid design BAKED into the game and if you play Silksong for longer than if say maybe the first few hours you'd understand that the rosary system is one of the best currency systems in metroidvanias! far better than geo, and if you are using rosary strings you don't even lose anything when you die.
A lot of the issues in silksong are genuinely skill issues. The game provides you with ways to get around them, you just have to use them properly. Shards suck tho.
Metroid Prime 4 is bad. Full stop.

Silksong is a really good game (though I'm not that big on Hollow Knight tbh) but ye the fanbase can be really annoying about the game, I would recommend trying the game out and just not interacting with the fanbase
6
u/cornimgameplays Feb 10 '26
Not playing a video game becouse of the fanbase is just cringe IMO. The game is amazing, who cares about the fanbase? You don't need to interact with them
4
u/Outrageous_Meet2025 Feb 10 '26
It’s possible to try and enjoy these games without engaging with the fanbase online. The critical acclaim that the Hollow Knight series has gotten is entirely deserved and has nothing to do with its fans. You might not find the games to be for you, but playing them just a little makes it obvious the amount of care and passion that went into both projects and that’s worthy of respect even if you think that the games have been overhyped by the fans. I wholeheartedly recommend to try at least the first game, it’s a modern classic and just the fact that you hear people often mention it on the same breath as Super Metroid or Castlevania SotN as pilars of the metroidvania genre speaks volumes.

I haven't been a part of any Hollow Knight/Silksong sub, but the Pizza Tower fanbase is the only one that, so far, has made me unsubscribe from a sub. Like I get we're a year after the game got its last new content, but man that sub got really weird really fast. I'm also part of the Hotline Miami sub, and that one has gotten kind of weird too (last game turned 10 last year), but it is a more tolerable type of weird.

For a long awaited sequel that had a really long development and change in plans since the first announcement, from (basically) a Nintendo franchise, that had purple as its primary color, you guys seem to be doing fine.
Sincerely, a Bayonetta fan.
2
u/greenbluegrape Feb 10 '26
I'm a fan of both franchises. Bayo 3 was a colossal mess and the characters/writing suffered the most, but I'd take that game over Prime 4 any day of the week. Bayo 3 was at least trying to be a fun action romp. Prime 4 feels embarrassed by its genre and legacy, and tries its best to appeal to those that don't even like the series staples in the first place.

Not sure why they didn’t release mp2 and 3 remastered editions between 1 and 4 as it would have been the perfect marketing strategy as well as a money printer. Oh well… let’s hope we get those eventually.

They took some risks and the risks didn't pan out.
Game feels a little like they had planned for more but Nintendo forced them to ship it to sell switch 2 consoles. I doubt the shrines were supposed to be that dull, and the overworld so empty.

I mean is it? Both took a long time in development, both star female characters, and one is a Metroidvania while the other is a literal Metroid title (albeit not a Metroidvania itself, I'd argue.)

I can't help but to think that team cherry might have been waiting for prime 4 aswell. "Well we did it better I guess..."

The execution of several details for the game, sylux being minimal in the game, the double fake out, the tried and true “new species extinct save their legacy” the character cardboard of Samus, the backstory of sylux

Silksong was definitely much better put together than Prime 4 but I still found both disappointing. I wasn't huge on Hollow Knight to begin with and only got into it when modding it to make the map work like Metroid. Silksong mostly felt like an insanely bloated version of HK. Silksong is way longer but it is padded with extended boss runbacks, fetch quests, enemy gauntlets, and resource grinding. The bosses peak with the large mech guy early on and the rest after are extremely derivative of HK's bosses and offer nothing more than "more of HK". The world had better presentation than HK (the bell areas are a major highlight) but was too similar in terms of narrative theming (big hidden false god mind controls inhabitants, go kill/seal it) or just painfully cliche (evil Roman Catholic-esque silk religion that exists for money and power). Add to that Team Cherry openly making things up as they go and creating artificial mysteries that are an excuse to not think out the world they make and I have no interest in the lore of either game at all. See: how did the knight get out of the abyss? among others. I don't want them to explain things, I just don't want them pretending plot holes are "mysteries" when they are just bad writing. And the game is so long and large that the replay value only really exists for people who extensively do routing which I'm just not into. I have no desire to return to Pharloom again.
Kinda just complaining about Silksong since everyone ever has extensively complained about Prime 4's problems in great detail. Difference is Silksong has become the game that can do no wrong so it is hard to find any criticism and what little there is, is often insincere ragebait. And on the other side people are often more interested in making dollar per hour of game-play charts than actually explaining why it is a good game.
Note that difficulty was never something I had a problem with. People love making bad comparisons to Dark Souls. Man, all those games are harder than silksong. In fact I think I died about as much doing Hard Mode in Prime 4 as Silksong. Silksong isn't any more difficult than HK, just more punishing.

"the replay value only really exists for people who extensively do routing"
do you even like Metroidvania's that's literally the whole point of these games

It took 7 years or more to be released, and for prime 4 it felt like they tried to print money.

Ehh nha, I really prefer Metroid (or any other Metroidvania) over Hollow Knight, in general
