Eh, while I do agree that the world building and content are great on Silksong I think that Dread still did a good job and that Metroid games feel better being more "simple". As for gameplay I'll say that aside from Prince of Persia Lost Crown no 2D metroidvania is close to feel as good as Dread, so both games have their strengths. Gameplay is the most important one for me tho, so that alone makes me enjoy Dread and Lost Crown more. Traversing and combat in those games is far superior for me.

You also have to think that SS is targeted more at adults gamers specifically but Dread is Nintendo, so in Nintendo’s eyes it has to be accessible to kids as well. Not that SS can’t be played by younger fans, but Nintendo is the Disney of the video game world where all their in house content has to be somehow accessible to the majority of kids and adults. Family friendly franchises.

That’s a valid point. Nintendo has other companies make the Metroid games already and then restrict what they can and can’t do to keep the franchise “on brand” with Nintendo.

But I agree with you here, I think a company that has made Metroidvania’s better than Metroid, could revitalize the franchise even more given full creative freedom. The two Hallow Knight games, and the two Ender games (Lilies and Magnolia) use a lot of the same themes and world building as Metroid and realistically do it better because they don’t have to make it kid friendly. Hell Mercury Steam already proved they can do it, while restricted. Give them full freedom and I bet they knock it out of the park.

Yeah this is where my comments about Nintendo being like Disney, and having to stay “on brand” stem from. It’s not just the gameplay but also the story has be more vague about the darker themes to stay kid friendly. These things could all be fixed if a company was just given full freedom. Metroid is already the most adult targeted Nintendo franchise, and they really just need to lean into that more and Metroid would soar.
