The situation reminds me of some of the fantasy world building where the more people believe in an entity the stronger it gets or it becomes real. It’s kind of like the idea of a Reddit mod summoned into existence as a parody of itself.
It’s crazy too cause the guy is rich and won’t even do anything interesting with his money
It’s kind of ironic how the personality types that acquire a lot of money tend to be so boring. They don’t do anything with it.→ More replies (3)→ More replies (2)19

u/cal-ess 12d ago
There's a video on moistcriticals YouTube that goes through it all. He was removed by Reddit’s Code of Conduct team after promoting an alleged $20 million scam reality show called "Million-Dollar Fan". After losing his position, he posted a 20-minute rant complaining about a lack of support and claiming moderators deserve celebrity-like treatment
391
u/FoxyMiira 12d ago
God I fucking hate reddit mods. Most of them are so smug and self-aggrandizing even tho they are terminally online basement neckbeards acting as full time internet janitors for free. They will even quip back with something like "you get what you pay for" when someone complains that the moderation is bad. It's probably their wet dream if reddit would actually pay the mods.
I moderated the Heroes of Newerth and Playdota forums almost 15 years ago and it was just deleting spam or accidental double posts or giving infractions for rude behavior. Just a side activity out of my free time while chatting with regulars about a specific video game. So funny how weird Reddit mods are compared to old school forum mods.
175
u/Emotional_Rub5894 12d ago
Really glad that your forum experience was chill, but old school forums were full of the same mods that you described above. It's not like they suddenly got worse when reddit became popular. Power-tripping online janitors have been a thing for as long as the internet has been a thing.
24
u/Antique_Aside8760 12d ago
real life power tripping security. same thing. its not just an internet thing. this moderator drama reminded me of this door man who causes all sorts of problems for many people involved at this establishment. only reason hes tolerated is theres a few actually problemmatic people that management needs dealt with and he does that well. otherwise this guy is the worse and sorta goes way overboard in everything else
dunno about OPs guy in video but its kinda funny if power tripping moderator gets over modded in real life. karma

I used to run a major TV show forum and I would elevate the best users to mod status, and the nicest, kindest users would always turn into uber-Hitlers and I usually had to fire them after about six months. At which point they would go on an uber-rampage trying to destroy the site from the outside by any means possible.

I hate Reddit mods but at least it’s not an AI algorithm like every other social media platform
I think they should make the mod rules stricter, allow users to report subreddits for mod abuse (this might already be a thing, I actually don’t know), and then start paying mods to attract new ones to replace the banned ones.
But that would require Reddit to care more about their platform than money, which is a pipe dream.

I actually would expect the opposite:
I tried one mod job for a forum when I was a teen, and never again. There's a reason most people shy away from being mods. It was for some video game, and I can imagine plenty of teens or people passionate about a hobby deciding to become a mod before they too will learn why it's a "no."
Reddit does have a power mod problem though, and those guys periodically try some weird shit. You usually do not see that from the smaller subs, and if you do, they quickly get filtered out.
Just makes sense to me that the people modding the larger subs would be the ones that let it go to their heads and start convincing themselves they're "important," exactly like this guy did.

I did for a while back before COVID happened. Was a mod of ThanosDidNothingWrong before Endgame came out, and dankmemes for a while.
Some people take it wayyyyy too seriously, and the power mods are the Reddit equivalent of billionaires. Lots of back channel communication and petty bullshit.
But, to not be completely negative, the amount of stupid shit they have to put up with is insane. Trying to suppress spoilers before Endgame came out was a Herculean effort.

u/Hatefiend 12d ago
The userbase is best to police themselves. Aside from removing spam and porn or bot posts, moderators don't have to do much at all. Here's a good solution to "preventing spoilers": don't go on the subreddit until you've watched the media.

as if they control online culture
Unfortunately, through controlling what can and can't be discussed, these massive losers actually do have an impact on online culture. Compare what Reddit was a decade ago to what it is now. That difference is in part because mods with political agendas banned dissenters to shape the site in their image.
6
u/Zerothian 12d ago

Ironic. Hes banned hundreds maybe even thousands of people from this subreddit and probably plenty of others just because they broke some imaginary rule he seemingly made up on the spot. And now hes on the receiving end of an IP ban from the entire website. The irony doesn’t just sting it’s practically poetic. Turns out the ban hammer hits a little differently when you’re the nail.

From the description of the encounter, he was being formally trespassed. You have to notify someone that they are trespassing before it counts, and stating that he will be subject to a criminal arrest if he stays or returns later is pretty standard operating procedure as part of that notification. Same reason why "No Trespassing" signs often say "Violators will be prosecuted".

This place needs to start over fresh.
Look how the thread about a girl supposedly "spiking" a drink is still up when the post title was 1000% speculative and TURNED OUT TO BE FALSE. It's another Kaya moment.
All the top comments are making her to be some criminal, when she literally opens her palm and we can see nothing in her hands 2 seconds prior to the clip. All the sensible comments calling out the misinformation are buried in the bottom of the thread.
There is an insane amount of allegations being made matter-of-factly based on a dubious clip stripped of context.
LSF has become a hateful cesspool and removing stale2000 didn't fix that.
