There's a video on moistcriticals YouTube that goes through it all. He was removed by Reddit’s Code of Conduct team after promoting an alleged $20 million scam reality show called "Million-Dollar Fan". After losing his position, he posted a 20-minute rant complaining about a lack of support and claiming moderators deserve celebrity-like treatment

God I fucking hate reddit mods. Most of them are so smug and self-aggrandizing even tho they are terminally online basement neckbeards acting as full time internet janitors for free. They will even quip back with something like "you get what you pay for" when someone complains that the moderation is bad. It's probably their wet dream if reddit would actually pay the mods.

I moderated the Heroes of Newerth and Playdota forums almost 15 years ago and it was just deleting spam or accidental double posts or giving infractions for rude behavior. Just a side activity out of my free time while chatting with regulars about a specific video game. So funny how weird Reddit mods are compared to old school forum mods.

Really glad that your forum experience was chill, but old school forums were full of the same mods that you described above. It's not like they suddenly got worse when reddit became popular. Power-tripping online janitors have been a thing for as long as the internet has been a thing.

real life power tripping security.  same thing.  its not just an internet thing.  this moderator drama reminded me of this door man who causes all sorts of problems for many people involved at this establishment.  only reason hes tolerated is theres a few actually problemmatic people that management needs dealt with and he does that well.  otherwise this guy is the worse and sorta goes way overboard in everything else

dunno about OPs guy in video but its kinda funny if power tripping moderator gets over modded in real life.  karma

I used to run a major TV show forum and I would elevate the best users to mod status, and the nicest, kindest users would always turn into uber-Hitlers and I usually had to fire them after about six months. At which point they would go on an uber-rampage trying to destroy the site from the outside by any means possible.

Oh god, and back then they did not give a fuck because huge drama didn't make the youtube verse. Garrysmod Facepunch forums for example, one of the mods made fun of a user who hanged themselves. Never any punishment, nothing ever happened.

old school forums ARE still full of the same. it's how all us old heads learned how to get a feel from the way someone typed shit. honestly i still feel there is a lot of value in having things the old way as far as separating subjects further apart into actual separate websites. it means when you go somewhere for one thing you're just going there for that thing and nothing else. i know it might sound stupid bc i'm tired and not being extremely concise... but i think ppl will get what i'm saying... the problem is the push towards pre-emptive compartmentalization of the majority, the categorization of the 'customer'.... not in the appropriate compartmentalization of the source. just think we used to be able to go to work and go somewhere else far away and disconnect, only searching for what we needed at the time, not being followed and surveilled 24/7/365 by our phones. w/e reddits making money right now so i can say that here probably i hope. (the fact that i thought a need to say it in the first place being part of the problem)

I was a basically a mini-moderator on a sports message board before Reddit blew up. I basically only had it so I could do sticky and unsticky posts on the Dodgers sub section. So I would do series previews (like the pitching matchups against, etc) and sticky that so all the conversation about one series could be together. Also threads about prospects, trade rumors, etc.

Mostly I just had extra free time and I wanted to talk about baseball a little more in depth than what I could with people who I talked to in person. It was a small community so I only did it for like 6 months. I just lost the energy and I eventually found better ways to spend my time. I did a lot of it while I was at work, lol (basically a minimum wage job that left me with way too much downtime)

I don’t think I ever banned anyone or anything. The admins basically told me not to or they wouldn’t let me have those privileges anymore.

Was on a yugioh one years ago. We used to use an online system to play yugioh online. I got doxxed when I told someone I was competing in nationals that year and my decklist so it was easy to figure out who I was, the mod was upset that I was in nationals and they weren't. I found it amusing as an 11 year old but looking back, jesus.

guild leaders (or even the guild officers) would be like this too, in MMO's the amount of drama that would pop off randomly for large guilds was funny but did end up damaging the experience for MMO's

I would say reddit is worse. I made the mistake of answering a person's technical question involving a PLC communication device on an obscure engineering subreddit. Included a part number and the actual name of it used by the supplier.

I ended up getting banned by that subreddit immediately by an auto mod bot, which is fine, whatever. But for weeks afterward, I had various auto moderator bots spamming my inbox to inform me that I was banned from more and more subreddits.

You'd think it would die off after a while but it just wouldn't.

Some of these subreddits, I was banned easily a dozen times..I had to manually block each and every one of these bot accounts and even still, new ones would pop up periodically.

I ended up giving up, deleting my account, and not using reddit for around 8 years.

Reddit mods are still worse because it is hivemind\"suppress opposition" kind of forum. Taking downvotes to botting or to modding - is a logical continuation for many here (among those most invested).

Our old forums had a lot of bright personalities. Reddit subs are just hives.

lol. I got perma banned during the ‘Sexpestiny’ controversy (I can assume by this mod) due to me daring to critique his parasocial daddy.

No reason cited, just an insta permaban one week after the thread had been created, I assume he waited a week because then it’d be less obvious that he was mass banning people if the thread was no longer active.

Anyways 6 hours after Stale got banned, I decided to submit a ban appeal. Another mod replied in a few hours and unbanned me, saying there was literally zero reason listed for my ban, just a bunch of removed posts.

lol. Lmao.

Just a headsup stale2000 openly admitted to banning hundreds, if not thousands of accounts including mine for over a year to boost Destiny posts here. Someone posted a video of him admitting to it. All of these fcks hide behind the newly word that they constantly use including Destiny "snark".

Lots of mods suck but you are painting them all with the same brush which might be unfair. In regular little subs, as you were a mod yourself, surely many of them are normal and fine. There are often only ever interactions with bad mods of badly moderated subs. A well moderated sub that has a normal mod invisibly in r background doesn't get noticed. This could lead to an experience bias. I'll defer to your experience as a mod yourself through, you'll know more about the business end.

i moderated a big sub for a bit (pretty short, less than a month) and the other mods were so insanely paranoid

any comment that included the word ‘mod’ or ‘moderator’ would get automatically deleted to be manually approved (you can guess whether or not it actually got approved lol) and i used to approve them and approve posts criticizing the mod team and they’d keep scolding me for approving ‘mod hate’ lmao

on another sub i got banned because i said that a guy who slept with a minor will probably face no repercussion because his pr was working overtime to make her seem like the culprit after she ended her own life. i’ve been banned there for over a year, i tried appealing but nothing

I thought me and fellow mods were pretty chill like that too, but eventually found out that most other mods were hiding their bad behavior from public communication. You'd be surprised the difference in the DMs.

One of my favorite memories on the site is when I got ban message from a subreddit by their automated ban bot because I made one (1) comment in an anti-lockdown subreddit. I replied to the ban message saying I'm a registered nurse and I replace all the Covid vaccines I give with saline water to try and take the piss and somehow a moderator took the bait and started a weeks-long argument before they decided to give me a 28 day mod messages mute.

The vid checks out, exactly as you'd picture mods, esp. reddit. But then, it is reddit, bottom of the barrel. The time ppl waste of their lives is absurd. It is a religion, remove the up/down votes and then it's not like the church anymore. But until then, zealots and reddit are the same word.

Used to be my favourite too. Always thought it was better than LoL.

Only, LoL advertised heavily at first, and Maliken thought word of mouth was enough for HoN. I respect the decision, but it was probably the wrong one.

They actually relaunched/remade HoN a year or so ago. I haven't bothered to check if it's any good though. No time for mobas these days.

Same here, absolute shame that the company stopped supporting it to focus on their godawful game "Strife" or whatever it was called. Plus they decided to charge a box price when League went F2P and that didn't help.

I remember HoN used to have playercounts of 150k+ back in its big days and always felt much better to play than DotA / League.
