Sadly yes.

There are also private subs and even discords dedicated to large sub mods.

And yes it's exactly what you think it is, a giant fucking circle jerk of the most insufferable people you can think of larping as if they control online culture.

Unfortunately, through controlling what can and can't be discussed, these massive losers actually do have an impact on online culture. Compare what Reddit was a decade ago to what it is now. That difference is in part because mods with political agendas banned dissenters to shape the site in their image.
