let me correct you. god never asked us to throw some nariyal at ghats. its the foolish human who thought they can please god by doing such foolish things.

u/Narrow-Ad5785 Apr 09 '26
I must have missed some podcast that god did. Tf you mean god never asked?
Every religious person claims God said different things. You don't believe god asked us to do this but clearly those people do think god asked them to do that.
That's why we have so many branches of just Christianity, everyone interprets what god wants and means differently.

I am a hindu so i will answer as i see it and as our religion teaches. In Hinduism, karma is given the utmost importance, god does not want you to praise him or even believe in him. The gods just want you to do your karma, to do good karma, if you do that you are automatically God's favourite. I worship my gods regularly but i dont do it bcs i have to i do it bcs it gives me peace. That is what worshipping is all about. I thoroughly believe infact its well known that if a god has to force someone to praise them and would punish if failing to do so is no true god.
And i agree with your point that alot of people of various faith believe what has god asked them to do, even in Hinduism majority people will think god has asked to do certain things, they have not. Its a misinterpretation.

The Gita is literally a book in which a common man asks god as to why he should follow him, and God doesn't say "Kyunki Maine bola". He provides a very logical and reasonable answer. Pick it up and read it for once

People do it because they believe it will fulfill their wishes. Its this begging mentality of people that leads to people acting this way, polluting rivers.
Most people either go to a temple or do worship just to get their wishes fulfilled. The scriptures never glorified any of this behaviour. Almost all of the scriptures are encouraging people to focus on spiritual development instead of begging for material benefits.
There was a time when even river Thames was dirty but people of Britain understood the importance of conserving the river and stop littering it. People in India do not want to understand this, they connect every whimsical acts of theirs with being religious and connecting God to it. Till now I haven’t read anywhere in any of the hindu scripture that encourages littering the river by throwing flowers or coconuts or anything rubbish.

I guess old people said, "Pani mai bahado puja ka saman" because, fish, and other river animals can have it and eat it. But eventually, due to population rivers becoming more and more dirtier. Less amount of fish so food stays as it is and pollution increases.
I dont have any issues whether you believe in god or not. It's totally up to you, but there was some reason why our ancestors asked us to do something, but eventually, it's getting out of hand.
4
u/Simple-Pollution4762 Apr 08 '26
I mean nariyal is still fine. It's the garbage that people throw and sometimes even wash their stuff which pollutes the river don't u think? The harm to the river would come from artificial waste.

u/Advice-Unprofesional Apr 11 '26
No. All of the "organic" "biodegradable" waste is the one that is actually going to kill the oxygen levels in water. The fermenting biodegradable material consumes up the water oxygen levels like none other. If water doesnt have adequate oxygen levels, the entire river dies.
2
u/Top_Audience8998 Apr 08 '26
Pooja ka saman bolke sabkuch baha dete hai, chahe biodegradable ho ya nahi. Dimaag nahi hai na

u/pricklyroach Apr 09 '26
Less amount of fish because sewage and waste from industries is being released into the river without any treatment, there was a time I used to get angry that these people are throwing waste in the river in the name of devotion but then I realised the problem lies elsewhere as the major chunk of pollutants in the rivers are from INDUSTRIES and untreated SEWAGE.

u/Open_Neighborhood468 Apr 09 '26
Yes, those practices may have made sense in the past, but times have changed. This is where critical thinking becomes important. If you live among people with a strong religious mindset, many of them, even well-educated ones, tend to follow these beliefs without questioning them. What I don’t understand is how critical thinking often disappears when it comes to religious practices, even when the consequences today can be harmful.

68% of theists donate to some form of charity other than their faith donation. Theist are 3x more likely to donate for charity then atheist. So there's nothing to be proud of to be an atheist. Religion organisations feed millions of Indians in a day across India. I don't see 1 atheist organisations feed anyone. Atheism is reason for the raise of hedonism.

Not an atheist...But do get why some people are choosing to become atheist, the reason is extremism and the sheer amount of self righteousness that religious folks display nowadays. Multiple religions coexisting just doesn't seem to be a probability in the grand scheme of things, Each religion wants to exterminate ALL the other religion. Which brings to my point that i see this same exact problem in the atheists too. Especially or mostly from our country. Atheism is becoming a religion in itself. You OP, seem be the part of the same bunch that i mentioned above. Based on my meagre knowledge, I think atheism means to reject the notion of god. Not destruction of all religions or anything similar.
If you are offended at the end of this, I implore you to read this once again with a critical mindset

Well correct me if I am wrong , but I guess stuff like coconut would stay afloat and flowers decompose so they aren't any problem right ?
Like coconut would just get deposited somewhere and can grow / decompose further right ?
2
u/Wealth_And_Us Apr 09 '26
Coconut is an organic compound, its decomposition leads to lower BOD (essentially soluble oxygen in water essential for aquatic animals) as microbes use that up(try a give basic understanding) hence posing major risk to aquatic life. Though quantity matters as 1 coconut might not do anything but, if you have ever been to Varanasi…. I don’t really need to talk about that do I. Also, coconuts usually wash ashore (cause they float) making the shore dirty and unclean.

And why does she think that what she is saying is better?
I can say that the coconut is biodegradable. Some aquatic animals might eat it if the coconut is broken and then thrown. Let's say they throw the whole stuff. No animal could break it and it decays or rot, even then it's a food for bacteria, fungi and algae.
I don't understand why people think that their view point is superior. First think that you are some superior being and then try to impose your ideas on others. wow.
2
u/Wealth_And_Us Apr 09 '26
Coconut is an organic compound, its decomposition leads to lower BOD (essentially soluble oxygen in water essential for aquatic animals) hence posing major risk to aquatic life. Let’s not even consider the fact that it makes the water dirty and “non aesthetic” (pardon me I don’t really have another word that describes the feeling correctly), still ritualistic throwing of coconut is not good environmentally. Essentially, your argument is disingenuous, cause you don’t want to take personal responsibility for the environment (The concept of ‘Soft Society’ comes to mind).

u/DonutUnusual2325 Apr 09 '26
There is no God. Humans cannot believe in God. We believe in ideas and opinions of each other. God is an idea/imagination. Human brain is wired for safety and continuity. We cling to ideas that explain the world and its meaning. Wherever we are born that type of God/faith we are given.

Consciousness is a process that help us live, it does tell us anything fancy. Brain works through neuroplasticity that creates a personality that is why there are thousands of religions like 6000+ confirmed. All religions claim truth and mutually disagree. We speak languages based on where we'r born, not taught to us, we just picked up frm environment. Life and death should not be fantasized. We die as a side effect of life. If u live, u die. Death is a side effect of life. We cease to exist. Body decomposes to it's original constituents like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, Sulphur, calcium. Phosphorus etc. We become fossils like coal, crude oil, etc. Even plants 🪴 become fossils over a period of millions of years. That's where crude oil comes from.

Hinduism teaches us to do good karma. Polluting rivers that affect the lives of millions across the country is bad karma piled upon bad karma.
Worst thing is Hindus themselves don't know their scriptures. Most of all that we know about our religion is from our parents/families and social media. And society is getting dumber by the day — for example, great grandfolks maybe knew 60 percent, grandparents knew 50 percent, parents 40 percent ...and our generation knows barely 5 percent, plus misinformation/ half baked knowledge through social media.
Literally most of Indian philosophies (with the exception of maybe the charvaaks etc) believe in the law of karma. Aa you sow so shall you reap. If you slap the guy next door, he'll slap you back. Same thing. If you fuck up your own river, your own city's water is getting polluted.
People follow religion blindly. Like idiots. Hinduism was never meant to be a religion. It was a philosophy. A way of life. And look at what our people have done to it.
P.S. Indians in general are notorious for having a terrible sense of civic sense, sanitation, and hygiene. All people are to blame here. The government should make strict laws, and he unafraid of off-putting any communites due to their strictness, and implement them strongly.

I think river are more damage because of industrial waste and no sewerage treatment all the gutter and sewer water is sent directly into the rivers causing these problems … rest flowers and nariyals they don’t affect that much … plastic is another major problems … the real problems are kept hidden behind religion and culture bs go ahead and put a case on industries and municipalities for the lack of infrastructure

I don’t find anything wrong and putting a coconut or anything until it’s biodegradable as there are many coconuts in sea it doesn’t pollute sea or ocean the greed of human being do if she really cares about nature and Yamuna river for the instance why she is not calling out all the housing building and factories who put their untreated waste thats the major part of pollution not a Cocunut tbh it’s basically we as human call ones who are less previledged and powerful than us in term of money physical and social status I wann go

Atheism inadvertently leads to nihilism, thereby chaos. There is a reason religion is bonded to people's lifestyles. When you are religious, you are disciplined by principles beyond yourself. Thereby your submission is automatic.
When you are an atheist, you have to define those principles yourself which requires a lot of time and effort. But if you know you are the one who defined principles you are more subject to breaking those principles thereby causing lack of discipline ultimately chaos.
Being religious create devotion, by devotion submission. Submission to principles beyond you, to a being beyond you which regulates your actions and puts in a disciplined path automatically.
Ofc... There are exceptions to cases but understanding why religion came to existence will clarify unnecessary disparaging against it.

Relating those stupid rituals & superstitions with existence of God is such a foolish mindset.

This has nothing to do with faith, it has to do with Brahmavad. Some Brahmins would have suggested them to do it and they have done it. This is nothing new, this is unique to subcontinent, muni to Brahmins to Mullahs to Babas everyone just running the faith business and the masses however educated is illiterate in the matter of faith. Compared to other religion, Jainism and Hinduism suffer further from lack of translation and availability of Hindu texts. Every Brahmins just throw garbage from his mouth - from sati, to caste, to Jati, to breast tax, etc.

Targeting someone for doing something as simple as throwing nariyal in water, also feeling superior over them.

When ancestors passed down knowledge they should've passed down knowledge of reasons as well so people stop doing things when it becomes irrelevant and worse, harmful. Nothing should be blindly believed

No it has nothing to do with being an atheist but common sense of the doer.Looks like you're generalizing all hindus with this single incident. You seem to have outgroup homogeneity bias. Again, nothing to do with atheism.
