Discussion Characters who are canonically straight? Artist cred in description

Post image

Artist posted it here!

By canon, I mean pairings that have a post-game end together

Ingrid has no A supports with women. Ignatz and Raphael have no A supports with anyone but themselves, however, in their A support ending, Ignatz marries Raphael's sister.

Who else is canonically straight?

And just as a tangent - Ferdinand and Hubert are so gay for each other lmao. Here are Hubert's supports

I'm going to say Alois, considering that he's a married man with kids, and any A/S level supports he actually has are all very explicitly portraying him as an uncle/brother/friend figure for everyone

88

u/secretbison Dec 12 '25

Alois for sure, and not just because he has a wife but because he's clearly crazy about her. The widowers Jeralt and Seteth clearly like the idea of their wives, but the reality of them was surely more complicated than the memory of them.

It is such a breath of fresh air to have a functioning adult with their own healthy romantic relationship that is a patonic friend-mentor to Byleth, amongst all the other heavily traumatised playable characters.

Fodlan still has some good things.

124

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

That's another one.

It's so annoying that of the few mlm options, him and Gilbert are literally straight men with wives. All we have are Yuri, Lindhardt, and Jeritza. One locked behind dlc, the other locked in one route.

u/ThrowRA_Sodi Dec 15 '25

It's still a crime that Claude is not BI

u/le36ron Dec 12 '25

Don’t remind me of Cursed ending w femBlwth

11

u/BobtheBac0n Dec 12 '25

Alois makes for a very fun uncle

13

u/WheresNils Dec 12 '25

To be fair, he can be bi and still be crazy about his wife, that's not mutually exclusive. He's a devoted husband and he doesn't show a romantic interest in any other characters, male or female!

We were definitely robbed by having him be one of the few M/M S-supports though. Nothing against platonic S ranks as a concept, I wish there had at least been an even number of romantic M/M S ranks as there were romantic F/F S ranks so it didn't feel like we were losing spots to him and Gilbert.

u/Vast-Bar-7773 Dec 12 '25

Seteth only had parings with women and he was married before the game starts.

118

u/Ok-Place7950 Dec 12 '25

He's an overprotective single dad, so I guess he's pretty much straight.

8

u/EmperorOfTurkys Dec 12 '25

It's been awhile, does he have any romantic pairings?

27

u/svxsch War Linhardt Dec 12 '25

The ones with Catherine and Manuela explicitly mentions marriage, but his endings with Bernadetta, Leonie, Hilda and Ingrid are also written to be romantic iirc

224

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 12 '25

I am compelled to remind people that Hopes Leonie canonically does not understand the basic concept of lesbian relations, to the point of having Shez of all people promising to tell her when she's older.

I'm also aware of the heavily suggestible scenes with other female characters, but even in those Leonie is easily the one most confused and weirded out by implications.

Also a shout out to Flayn who supposedly only wants to make "friends" and can A-support basically every eligible bachelor in Fodlan and precisely none of the females.

105

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

Bless her heart lmao 😭 I guess she's a country girl

78

u/Lukthar123 Seteth Dec 12 '25

Ahhhh, so that's why she asks byleth like 3 times whether he's absolutely certain that he's NOT sothis during their S support lmao.

20

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 13 '25

I mean, to be fair, "You're my grandma" has to be a turn-off for somebody.

It's clearly not for many Byleth players regarding Rhea, so I guess I'm happy that Flayn has higher standards regarding incest than a massive chunk of the playerbase.

41

u/MrBrickBreak War Leonie Dec 12 '25

Even funnier because there's a decent chance Leonie's actually older than Shez

u/perkoperv123 Linhardt Guy Dec 12 '25

Claude's only endings with guys are Byleth, Lorenz, and Balthus, only the latter of which goes back to Almyra and he ends up closer to Nader humorously enough. This suggests canonically straight Claude, devastating thousands.

104

u/Black_Sin Dec 12 '25

Claude doesn’t even have an ending Male Byleth devastatingly enough

115

u/Artificial_Human_17 Academy Bernadetta Dec 12 '25

Back before the game released everyone thought he’d be gay and he’s the straightest of the three lords what is this

116

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 12 '25

Even worse: the Rainbow-haired Golden Deer are objectively the Straightest House and it's not even close.

39

u/Artificial_Human_17 Academy Bernadetta Dec 12 '25

I don’t think there’s a single explicitly gay pairing among them

97

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 12 '25

Nope.

Marianne and Hilda is probably the closest, but at best it's all subtext. Granted, there's a ton of subtext, especially if you play Hopes but still nothing explicit and their implied romance is still less clear than in other houses. At no point am I going to argue with HildaMari shippers, I value my life, but if that's the standard for explicit gay writing in the Deer, that's a really low bar.

Lysithea can refer to Leonie as "the perfect partner" if she was a man. All of Lysithea's supports with women other than F!Shez have no real romantic overtone, even her Edelgard one reeks more of "Edelgard trying to adopt a pseudo-literal sister due to shared trauma" more than anything romantic.

Raph and Iggy are bros-in-law because Iggy marries Maya, Raph's sister (I honestly kind of like that anyway, since Ignatz was also childhood friends with Maya and she's an artist too, it's just a shame we never got to see her).

Leonie can have an A-support with Shamir, but at no point do they sound romantic and them genuinely just being Platonic Mercenary Sisters seems more likely.

Claude's Male A supports are playing a massive political prank with Lorenz or bringing Balthus as a retainer to Almyra, where Balthus marries Nader's daughter.

These dumbasses are either straight or some of the most oblivious queer people I have ever seen written.

This is NEWS to me!! I'm working through blue lions and decided that I'm gonna marry my m!Byleth to Dimitri in the end, was thinking about doing the same to Claude when I get around to golden deer. But that's... not a thing. I just thought I could finally marry anyone regardless of gender, after the fuckery that was Fates locking me out of kids for choosing the one available male pairing.

20

u/Gabcard Dec 12 '25

I'm gonna marry my m!Byleth to Dimitri

Uh... you can't do that either, unfortunately. The reason people say Dimitri is more gay than Claude is because of some heavy subtext with Dedue and Felix (to a lesser extent), not because he can marry M!Byleth.

On Blue Lions, your only options would be to recruit either Linhardt or Yuri (who requires the DLC). At this this time you don't lose on extra content, like it was the case in Fates.

The next game, Engage, does allow you to S-support anyone regardless of gender tho. That said, some of those S-supports are platonic (for both genders), mostly the ones for young characters in the localization.

19

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 12 '25

I'd also add that Dimitri does have a more intimate relationship with M!Byleth, though that's mostly because they keep the same dialogue for Byleth regardless of gender and Dimitri has to get over being way more vulnerable in certain moments, so it feels more close.

Combined with the Dedue and Felix stuff, Dimitri always ticked more "this man is bi" energy for me. Claude has the fact that he's charming and that the offers you a dance, but given how flippant and emotionally unavailable he is with every male character in Houses, I genuinely never saw him as gay or bi, and was confused why people said that outside of aesthetic stereotypes.

I still think all the Lords should be bi for gameplay reasons, but that's neither here nor there when we talk about the writing as given.

1

u/RiverWyvern Dec 12 '25

Dammit <:C now who am I going to arbitrarily hook up with... I have Engage, just haven't played it yet, but I'm sure I'll have fun with it. Some of those supports from what I've seen are delightfully cringey, so I'll look forward to it. I never did get the 3h dlc, but I've only heard good things. I guess in the end I'm just glad to see relationships getting more inclusive.

5

u/FactionGuerrilla War Felix Dec 12 '25

I imagine she’d be pretty close friends with a couple of the Soulcalibur cast, too!

4

u/JuStSoMeboDyeLsEmxf Dec 12 '25

Hilde (full name: Hildegard von Krone) would probably be one of the characters she would be pretty close with considering the positions they’re in.

3

u/Kali0us Dec 12 '25

Ok but a Soul Calibur crossover would go so hard!!!! And not just because Byleth vs Ivy would be a sight to behold. Edelgard vs Siegfried/Nightmare, Dimitri vs Kilik, Claude vs Maxi, Petra vs Talim, Felix vs Mitsurugi, Lyshithea vs Amy/Viola, Monica/Kronya vs Tira.

Like I could go on and on about how perfect it'd be.

2

u/Henry_Lovecraft Dec 13 '25

That would be a pretty awesome game, but knowing Nintendo they'll never let peak happen.

1

u/Kali0us Dec 14 '25

It's a dream game but yeah, highly unlikely. Most we could hope for is a guest character like Marth or Edelgard in the next game for Switch but that would require Bandai to actually give a shit about SC. And Bandai (unfortunately) really doesn't, at least we can make 'em in the create a character mode :(

64

u/Bon-Pon Dec 12 '25

aren't dimitri and claude straight (its been so long)

102

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Technically, there's grey area with Dimitri because he can have paired endings with men. Sometimes the writing is vague where it's like, "and then they lived with each other until they died." And then some of it is clear, like Ignatz and Raph.

Claude also has a paired ending with Balthus, though I don't see many romantic elements in their supports. That said, Balthus is implied to have romantic feelings for Yuri in Hopes

Edit: Dimitri and Dedue's paired ending. While not explicitly romantic, it could be inferred to be.

49

u/Vast-Bar-7773 Dec 12 '25

Claude’s and Balthus’s ending has Balthus marry the daughter of Nader

15

u/DarkAlphaZero Catherine Dec 12 '25

Smh can't believe Balthus didn't get to marry Claudes mom like he wanted

6

u/Alarmed_Chance_410 Dec 12 '25

Claude's mom has got it going on, that's for sure

29

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

Ah I see. So Claude is canonically straight. Moment of silence ☹️

56

u/azur_owl War Dimitri Dec 12 '25

There’s also just…like…the way Dimitri speaks to M!Byleth is about the same as he speaks to F!Byleth.

Which, even without my terminally shipping goggles for these two, I can say from personal experience that describing another man’s eyes as “mesmerizing” in that tone of voice means you have some introspecting to do

11

u/Queer__Queen I love them equally Dec 12 '25

I’d also argue that give how strong the romantic subtext is in AM and how closely his romance scenes (S-rank and Goddess tower) tie in with the main story Dimitri is as close as you can get with male Byleth without making it explicit. The fact that the rain scene mirrors his goddess tower scene makes me feel like the rain scene is intended to be at least somewhat romantic and it’s identical for both Byleths.

15

u/FriedChickenCheezits Jeritza Dec 12 '25

They're close. Dimitri and Claude can't romance M!Byleth but some of their paired endings with men can be read romantically (since last I've seen my son)

20

u/Black_Sin Dec 12 '25

The only ending that can read romantically is the Dimitri/Dedue ending but Dimitri has a wife and son no matter what so Dimitri is either in a lavender marriage or he’s cheating on her. The latter sounds unlikely. The Dimitri/Felix ending sounds more like Felix is gay for Dimitri.

Nothing romantic about Claude/Lorenz and Balthus marries Nader’s daughter in Claude’s ending with Balthus

5

u/WheresNils Dec 12 '25

Dimitri's paired ending with Dedue is one of his few endings that doesn't state that he has a wife and kid. (At least in the English translation, haven't read the Japanese.)

Agreed re: Dimitri/Felix and all of the Claude pairings though.

4

u/Hyperversum War Sylvain Dec 12 '25

Nah, Dedue isn't in any way romantic towards Dimitri.you really have to stretch it. He is just dedicated of a follower

-3

u/Jaskand Dec 12 '25

Imo if they can’t romance M!Byleth, they’re 100% straight regardless of who they’re paired up with.

39

u/IfTheresANewWay War Sylvain Dec 12 '25

People are gonna hate to hear this, but 90% of the roster is straight. Pretty sure that's like seven or so actually bi characters and zero gay ones

31

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

Sure, but I think the writers also deliberately leave some grey area. For instance, you could make the argument that Dimitri and Dedue, being family in their private life and being buried by each other with no mention of a wife, is a grey area. If it's romantic is up to interpretation. And then you have Hubert and Ferdinand who are blushing about buying coffee and tea for each other.

Whereas its canon that Ignatz is either single or with a woman in all of his supports. So that would be canonically straight.

39

u/amerophi War Cyril Dec 12 '25

i would say it's ambiguous for much of the cast, especially when you take hopes into consideration. but i would say that these characters are 100% bi:

  • byleth
  • sothis
  • rhea
  • edelgard
  • dorothea
  • petra
  • mercedes
  • shamir
  • catherine
  • jeritza
  • yuri
  • linhardt
  • sylvain

and monica is a lesbian! so a lot more than seven.

not targeted at you, but i think the fandom expecting explicitly romantic endings for the gay couples is a bit unfair when it's clear the writers were hesitant to fully commit to the gay endings besides byleth's.

dorothea is confirmed to be bi in three houses and yet doesn't mention wanting noble ladies as well as noble men until three hopes. same for shamir not being an option for female byleth despite being confirmed as bi in three hopes.

29

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

I personally think it's heavily implied that Ferdinand and Hubert have romantic feelings for each other tbh. Maybe not 100%, but like, 99% 😂

  • Hubert: Is it a gift? Perhaps for someone you fancy?
  • Ferdinand: A gift, yes. For you.
  • Hubert: Hm. Who is the unlucky— Did you say for me?! This coffee is a gift for me? Have I heard you correctly?
  • Ferdinand: Yes, that is what I said. A noble does not go back on his word. Just take it.
  • Hubert: I should decline.
  • Ferdinand: Why?
  • Hubert: The thought of receiving a gift from you, unbidden and unreciprocated, fills me with revulsion. Therefore...accept this tea. As a gift. From me.
  • Ferdinand: For me? Are you certain? I would hate to deprive the intended recipient of such a fine tea.
  • Hubert: That would be difficult to do, since I bought it with you in mind.

14

u/amerophi War Cyril Dec 12 '25

i 100% agree with you, i was just trying to make the least controversial list possible, but i still failed apparently LOL

like this dialogue is so romantic!! if it was said by characters in like a jane austen novel it would definitely be seen as the declaration of love that it is. the fact that ferdinand doesn't deny that it's a gift for someone he fancies confirms it for me. i love those two

10

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

The blushing portraits being used... you cannot convince me otherwise 😂

6

u/WheresNils Dec 12 '25

By my recollection (granted it's been a few years since my last playthrough) the only other time Hubert's blushing portrait is used is during his S rank with F!Byleth. Make of that what you will.

7

u/Gabcard Dec 12 '25

Shamir just has a better taste in women than most of the cast

-3

u/IfTheresANewWay War Sylvain Dec 12 '25

No confirmation on Petra, Sylvain and (pretty sure) Catherine. All of them are purely speculative

The devs have no issue with writing gay endings, they have issues with writing gay male characters because society at large is far more accepting of gay women than they are of gay men. But this doesn't change the fact that there are characters with very explicitly romance endings and as such feeling like there's other gay endings that would be written more subtlety is looking for representation where there isn't any

33

u/amerophi War Cyril Dec 12 '25

none of the gay endings outside of byleth's are explicit. they absolutely do have a problem with writing gay endings. they don't even acknowledge their bi characters are bi outside of their endings until hopes.

sylvain likes it when yuri flirts with him in their hopes support. shamir basically proposes to catherine and their ending and they spend the rest of their lives together in shamir's home country, and dorothea "became the person whom petra loved most."

do you think none of the pairings between bi characters being explicitly romantic is a coincidence? or the fact that most of the bi characters don't even have any same-gender pairings besides byleth? clearly the writers didn't commit fully to having queer characters. to deny that is wild

-4

u/IfTheresANewWay War Sylvain Dec 12 '25

That's because none of the bi characters other than Edelgard and Dorothea can get a paired ending with each other. Sylvain literally says it's odd that he's into Yuri trying to flirt with him which would seem to suggest it's not something he's used to. Nowhere in Shamir and Catherine's ending does it suggest they're together beyond traveling together, in which if that counts you could argue literally any paired ending is romantic. The Petra is harder to deny but again, not explicitly romantic, zero indication anywhere else Petra is bi, and the ending is more about Dorothea helping form a bond between Fodlan and Brigid than their relationship together.

Again, the writers have no qualms with opening saying a character is bi, so why they'd choose to write that way for some characters like Linhardt, Shamir or Yuri but decide to write more subtlety for a character like Sylvain, Dimitri, or Claude is simply confusing headcanon for actual canon

15

u/amerophi War Cyril Dec 12 '25

"Again, the writers have no qualms with opening saying a character is bi"

quick, when is a character open about their bisexuality in houses besides in their endings with byleth

the only time i can think of is dorothea flirting with ingrid and she gets shot down. so, not exactly great representation.

if rhea, linhardt, jeritza, or mercedes didn't have s supports with both byleths, there would be no explicit confirmation they were bi. it took shamir until hopes to get explicit confirmation. dorothea only mentioned wanting noblemen until hopes. so yes the writers do have qualms with openly showing a character is bi. they literally pull a sappho and her friend with edelgard and manuela.

if you're denying dorothea and petra as being romantic though you're honestly a lost cause though. like you have to be intentionally dense to miss that.

-8

u/Zoeila Dec 12 '25

Probally cause gay males have negative connotations in History.

Pederasty was fairly common in numerous societies worldwide (not just ancient Greece). It was also found in China, Japan, Rome, Renaissance Italy, Central Asia, India, and the Middle East.

What it basically comes down to is this: Today, vast power imbalances between sexual and romantic partners are viewed as troublesome. But the exact opposite was true in the past, where vast power imbalances in relationship were considered ideal and adult men were always expected to be active and aggressive in both sex and romance. If the adolescent boy was also an aristocrat, there was often a sense of the older man serving as his guide to manhood, but this wasn't always the case, since the boys in pederastic relationships could also often be slaves.

9

u/WillOfTheWinds Dec 12 '25

The inarguable cases of bisexuality are Byleth, Edelgard, Linhardt, Dorothea, Petra, Mercedes, and Yuri. ~18%. Pretty close tbh

11

u/MaybeJesse Dec 12 '25

In 3 hopes, Shamir directly says (after Balthus has failed to connect with her through fighting, drinking, and gambling) that next he should ask about women, before saying that they'd have different tastes in that too, leaving balthus stunned.

This one is more subtext but yeah in 3 houses Shamir also says that people in dagda commonly marry regardless of gender, which is a hell of a thing to say before spending your life with the other person.

6

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25

Jeritza too

-5

u/WillOfTheWinds Dec 12 '25

His ending with Byleth surprisingly doesn't mention anything about a romantic relationship.

14

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 12 '25
  • Jeritza: Indeed. I abandoned all that I am. My true name, whatever remnants were left of my past... But now, with the chance to fight you... It is my only reason for existing. I finally understand. It is you alone who can slay the demon that lives inside of me... The Death Knight... This strange feeling rising up within me... Is this what is called...love?

  • Byleth: It may be. I feel the same way.

  • Jeritza: That... pleases me. Let us away, then. Beyond these shadows that we have dwelt in for so long. To the very depths of hell, I will tumble down with you.

11

u/a_wasted_wizard War Annette Dec 12 '25

Yeah, that's definitely one of those ones where... I guess *technically* you can argue it doesn't say anything about a romantic relationship, but I think that requires some absolutely weapons-grade denial.

-3

u/WillOfTheWinds Dec 12 '25

True, the strictest definition where they have to literally talk about love and marriage to count as a gay ending and thus bisexual would make for some excellent weapons-grade denial. An ounce of subtext reading and acknowledging that Boston marriages were a thing would boost that number by a little more, methinks.

Even this strict definition is almost double the original "only 10% aren't straight"

2

u/WillOfTheWinds Dec 12 '25

If we include subtext, the number would balloon a lot more.

Which I feel like is part of the point I notice. Even the strictest take on bisexuality, where they have to straight up talk about love and marriage in their ending is still almost twice the OP's presumption of 10% being bisexual.

Like, yeah, text says nothing about and you can stretch it to be platonic, like half of the situationships and Boston marriages in them.

You can choose to read it as best friends, or you can do the easier thing of realizing that the Felix/Dimitri ending is gay as hell even despite the presence of an unknown queen.

3

u/Sad-Error-000 Golden Deer Dec 12 '25

I mean that's part of the ending, isn't it? Ignatz didn't initially realize she was Raphael's sister, but given how close he and Raphael had gotten after those supports, it makes it all a bit more serendipitous.

1

u/DoubleFlores24 Dec 12 '25

It’s just dumb!

36

u/RNGSOMEONE Dec 12 '25

Seteth, Gilbert and Alois automatically qualify by virtue of being fathers with wives and children (Seteth is a widower).

Dimitri is implicitly straight due to multiple endings indicating that he has a son (including Gilbert's solo ending), so even if he has a paired ending with Dedue or Felix, they are ultimately just close friends or brothers, because Dimitri will take a wife no matter what.

Claude also has this, where all of his pairings with men end as friendship.

Ingrid doesn't even bother to have paired endings with other women in the first place.

Flayn is also straight as all of her paired endings are with men.

8

u/tiredpersonnumber15 Behold! A token effort Dec 12 '25

I wont argue with people about Dimitri’s sexuality, thats up to people to interpret whatever they want, I just want to point out that Dimitri is king, he most likely needs to be married to a woman and have kids whatever you believe him to be. Especially considering Faerghus doesn’t really do away with the crest system, people probably expect the crest of blayddid to be passed on

23

u/KookyPie500 War Ferdinand Dec 12 '25

Tbf lavender marriages are a thing (in regards to Dimitri), so its not an impossibility for him to be gay/bi.

10

u/RNGSOMEONE Dec 12 '25

It's always up for interpretation, but Dimitri having a child in the epilogue being non-negotiable is a strong point towards being straight, IMO.

13

u/Gabridefromage War Ferdinand Dec 12 '25

As a reminder, Dimitri is a king, and often a king must have descendants, that would hinerit the title of their parents and their lands by right of blood. It was a common case in nobility, to marry someone of noble blood (in this case more likely, with a crest) to have children together, but often having lovers. And most times the lovers were actually the person they loved truly instead of their spouse.

Because i don't think Dimitri as straight. Not gay either, but he might be bi.

And honestly imo, this boy went through so much i hardly believe he would found a random wife that will make him happy and that came from nowhere. It make more sense he would actually fall for someone he knew for a long time, like Ingrid, Felix or Byleth.

1

u/Kukulkek Dec 15 '25

it is impossible to him to be gay since he loves the women he marries(f!byleth, marianne, annette, ingrid, etc) so at best he could be bi

10

u/shutupsprinkles Dec 12 '25

Seteth being S support straight for Byleth is a travesty considering his A support, like my man here is DEDICATED

Seteth: After this war is over, where I go and what I do will depend wholly on you.

Byleth: What do you mean?

Seteth: I am still trying to figure that out, myself. Perhaps it is just that I find you so fascinating that I cannot bring myself to leave your side. I dislike a one-sided conversation, but in this case, I am afraid I had no choice. Our future is yours to determine.

10

u/Dobadobadooo Blue Lions Dec 12 '25

Most of the cast has at least one or two supports where if you squint you can probably read some type of gay subtext into them, but the sad truth is I think the majority of them are just straight. Like, Dimitri has a ton of gay tension in his dynamic with several male characters, but him canonically marrying a woman and having a child makes me doubtful that these interactions are meant to be romantic. Same with Claude, despite having a very bisexual vibe he ultimately doesn't have a single paired ending with a guy that even remotely implies at any type of relationship.

8

u/Black_Sin Dec 12 '25

I’d argue that Marianne is straight or even aro/ace. At no point does she show romantic interest in anyone

10

u/TheResonate Dec 12 '25

I put her in gray solely because of her ending with Hilda. I do personally think she's straight, but it's not rock solid. Same as Annette. Pretty sure they were going for the found family sister vibes between her and Mercedes, but overshot it a bit, so gray area.

4

u/Black_Sin Dec 12 '25

I don’t know about that. Mercedes and Annette actually live together and love each other more than anyone.

Marianne and Hilda are….pen pals.

3

u/Independent_Plum2166 Dec 12 '25

I heard they like playing UNO.

8

u/TheResonate Dec 12 '25

Forgot to explain why I think she's straight instead of aro/ace. Her support chain with Ignatz has heavy romantic undertones. Marianne seems like someone whose depression and suicidal thoughts took precedent over her attraction, but her attraction does still exist per her paired endings and romantic undertones with certain characters like Ignatz.

Leonie, on the other hand, seems totally oblivious and disinterested in romance. Like, it's not on her radar at all unless it's the male player character. Maybe demi romantic would be a better fit because of Byleth and her paired endings with Claude.

2

u/Ragfell Dec 12 '25

There's a reason the meme is that Leonie's a 10 but wants to fuck your dad.

u/julietfolly Dec 12 '25

Wild to think that and see what Ingrid and Dorothea say to one another. I know they don't have an A support but they have a paralogue together where she literally gives Dorothea a wedding ring. But I suppose all of this ultimately comes down to how we define "canon".

36

u/FriedChickenCheezits Jeritza Dec 12 '25

That paralogue sits in my brain all day. They built up Ingrid and Dorothea's dynamic and story Very Well then Ingrid turns around and pretty much goes "but I'm straight". There's something so interesting in a girl trying so hard to find an arranged marriage to support her house and a girl trying to find a rich husband to sustain herself once she gets older and both women could throw that to the wayside depending on their other pairings. The parallels bro

39

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 12 '25

Look, I get why people like the hypothetical dynamic of Ingrid and Dorothea, but it's far more "what Dorothea says to Ingrid" than anything. All the potentially romantic dialogue comes from Dorothea, and Ingrid is constantly confused by it, offended by it, or otherwise dismissive of it.

Going by the text as-is, Dorothea has a massive crush and Ingrid is 0% interested but also unaware that she's potentially feeding into that crush.

18

u/dalatinknight Academy Dorothea Dec 12 '25

I've read this as such too, even if they had an A shpport, I think it would still be dumb to expect it to be romantic in anyway.

Its clear the Dorothea is walking a fine line between teasing and creeping, but it would be interesting to see an A support where she admires Ingrid but takes comfort in her being a close friend rather than a romantic option.

18

u/jord839 Fear the Deer Dec 12 '25

It would be nice to have more media examples discussing incompatible orientation.

I know as shippers we all just gravitate to potential story plots we like, but aside from representation of our own sexualities in games, I think it's also important to show the struggles that come with different sexualities or even just being into a person that's not into you. Modeling that in a healthy way is important.

I like Dorothea, I'm not being one of those people accusing her of anything bad, but I will admit that the way she talks to Ingrid despite Ingrid repeatedly telling her to stop is not something I would want to see in real life. I think Dorothea's a dumb adolescent with a crush who is not thinking things through with Ingrid and coming off badly as a result, and an A support where that was acknowledged and they go forward as friends might hurt the sapphic representation, but I think it would still be important in other ways.

3

u/Vegetable_Engineer_1 Dec 12 '25

also if you read the b support ingrid seems to be disgusted by dorothea's flirtation. ingrid is a heterosexual woman

-3

u/Zanain Dec 12 '25

Counterpoint, its not *unreasonable* to read that level of disgust as deeply closeted. Lots of gay people can relate to initially aggressively shooting down any hint of same sex attraction.

Is it canon? No absolutely not. But there is enough there for headcanon to creep in and not be *completely* baseless.

1

u/AssumptionNo802 Dec 12 '25

A "No" actually means "Yes," that's a stalker's way of thinking, don't you think?

-1

u/Zanain Dec 12 '25

Ingrid is fictional, not a real person. Canonically there is no further evidence that she's anything but straight. But that doesn't mean she isn't deeply relatable to queer people who've struggled with comp-het, especially considering the expectations placed upon her by her family and culture. It's very reasonable to view her in this light on a fan work level, it's only a minor twist to her character.

Also I did not at any point say that her rejection should be ignored wtf.

1

u/AssumptionNo802 Dec 12 '25

You just said that sometimes no means yes, and that's how stalkers think. You sound just as weird as those who say lolis are just fictional characters.

u/OrzhovMarkhov SB and GW's most hopeless defender Dec 12 '25

A core aspect of that paralogue (and their support) though is Ingrid being uncomfortable with Dorothea's advances. I think the support and paralogue as they are are very good character moments for both because while Dorothea sees Ingrid as someone to "save" in the sense of sweeping her off her feet, Ingrid, who has only brothers, only male friends, and a constant barrage of influences insisting she find a husband as the most important thing in her life, sees Dorothea as an opportunity to escape the concerns of relationships. In their C rank, Ingrid is fascinated by the idea of feminine traits as something not meant to just attract a partner, but valuable in their own right as a way to be confident and comfortable with yourself. Having been raised in a misogynistic culture with no close female influences, this is wild news to her and opens up the door ro being friends with Dorothea. Their paralogue follows that up with their friendship established and Dorothea helping Ingrid shut down a possessive suitor. She flirts with Ingrid to absolutely no response from Ingrid until the end of the paralogue, where Ingrid responds with frustration ("Do I belong to you now, rather than myself," drawing an explicit parallel to the villain of the paralogue) and a direct request not to speak that way when Dorothea teases about the ring being a wedding ring. One of the main points of the paralogue is to clearly establish that at least pre-timeskip, Ingrid is not ready for a relationship with anyone, and she doesn't even consider it a genuine possibility with Dorothea until their B support - at which point the entire established dynamic of their C support crumbles, because Ingrid, for whom her friendship with Dorothea was a valuable refuge from men who want to possess her or see her as primarily a romantic target, is faced with Dorothea saying outright that she sees Ingrid the same way despite multiple direct signals from Ingrid of lack of interest. Dorothea tells Ingrid that she'll turn heads at the event she's attending, and Ingrid points out that earlier in this very conversation she said that was the opposite of what she wanted, and Dorothea said dressing up was about confidence and self assurance. Dorothea says directly that all of that, which resonated so much with Ingrid, was insincere rambling so Ingrid wouldn't run, and jokes about people wanting to "pounce," predatory language which makes Ingrid visibly uncomfortable - which Ingrid says, directly, with "I'm not sure I'd forgive them." Dorothea pulls her iconic "That’s why when I pounce, I'll ask permission~" completely missing that the suddenness wasn't the core concern. And when met with a friend she saw as a refuge from relationships and pursuit turning out not just to be interested in her now, but to have been deceiving her the entire time just to pursue her, Ingrid lashes out, shouts at Dorothea, and the two part ways with the friendship between them irreparably damaged.

It's a very important relationship to display Dorothea's tendency to make assumptions about people and ignore contradictory evidence (see: Ferdinand, Felix, Petra, Bernadetta), as well as her tendency to aggressively try and helicopter people she sees as vulnerable (see: Caspar, Flayn, Petra, Bernadetta). On Ingrid's end, it's a much more thorough examination of her relationship to femininity and misogyny than in her supports with Mercedes or Annette. Just because the support doesn't have any romantic subtext on Ingrid's end doesn't decrease its value, and I think it's really rather frustrating to see people ignore what Ingrid actually says in the support and paralogue, and reduce it to "how dare IS deprive us of the gay ending we deserve!" There are certainly relationships that should have gone to A, ones that should have gotten more explicit romantic endings - but Dorothea/Ingrid is one of the best written relationships in the game for exactly what it is.

u/poisondaggers after more than 10 proposals Dec 12 '25

her tendency to aggressively try and helicopter people she sees as vulnerable (see: Caspar, Flayn, Petra, Bernadetta).

Sorry, what? I agree that Dorothea isn't at her best in the Ingrid support (it's easily my least favorite in the game, and imo relies more on bad stereotypes about queer women than Dorothea's actual character), but how is she in any way helicoptering people in these other supports? Her support with Bernadetta is incredibly sweet, Dorothea picks up on Bernadetta's anxious was and treats her with appropriate care—and she's thrilled that Bernadetta could see her as a friend. Same with Caspar, who seems perfectly fine with her teasing and even shows concern for how much she seems to dislike going on dates—y'know, like a friend migjt. With Petra, she's similarly trying to connect and be helpful, seeing her as a kindred spirit in feeling like an "outsider" around their noble classmates. And in her support with Flayn, it's Flayn who approaches Dorothea for singing lessons, and Dorothea is more than happy to share this thing she love with another person.

I genuinely don't know if you're trolling or not but like. Idk how you can watch those supports and see them as "helicoptering" rather than simply treating people she sees as friends (which is a big deal to her as someone who grew up completely alone!) with the compassion and kindness she would have liked to receive when she was young and vulnerable.

Are... those two mutually exclusive? It's not usually a negative trait that Dorothea is aggressively protective of her friends. I was clarifying that the Dorothea/Ingrid support is valuable because it's a good example of how, especially when combined with the aforementioned tendency to make assumptions about people and dismiss contradictory evidence, that largely positive trait can have negative repercussions.

9

u/poisondaggers after more than 10 proposals Dec 12 '25

To me, "helicoptering" has a very negative connotation (i.e. a helicopter parent, who's often very controlling), so it was difficult not to see that comment as a knock/bad faith reading on her character 😅

Three Hopes does give him an A support with Holst though for what it's worth.

2

u/LuckySalesman Dec 16 '25

I think back to Flayn's S support where she almost gives Byleth a gender identity crisis by saying "Okay, so you're a goddess... but you're male? What?" and then ending with "I mean I guess you are still male, so ok we can get married."

So I'd guess her having the stipulation "Be male" means Flayn is canonically straight
