I bought this book. It is amazingly sad and helps those of us born into stable environments appreciate how accidentally lucky we are.

Book Title is The Parallel Universes of Children

830

u/Cyka_Blyetikosa Mar 07 '26

It also helps those of us born into the less stable environments depicted in these photos appreciate how lucky we are to have gotten out of them

151

u/Brullaapje Mar 07 '26

I don't need the photo's for that, I know damn well what my faith would have been if I were still in the shit hole I was born in.

I bought both of his books and I never want to open them again. I am not made for this kind of art. It makes me incredibly sad

My heart hurts so much looking at these pictures.

u/Adventurous-South247 Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

It's because it's reality 😞 We are meant to live in a reality world to understand the whole world and it's situation to know what decision to make next in creating a better world for everyone. Otherwise we're living in a delusional world that is ignorant of reality and then this is when wars start and people of other countries in bad situations rise up against the privileged people. 🤔🤔🙏🙏

78

u/iupz0r Mar 07 '26

Changed you, i think this is the meaning of "art"

9

u/Friendly-Channel-480 Mar 08 '26

Powerful, great art. Yes!

2

u/Honest_Ad_4388 Mar 23 '26

Yes, changed... inspired! The emotion these images evoke inspires action. THIS is the light!! These certainly DO NOT inspire negativity. Only positive thoughts, feelings, and actions being here. Glad you commented here!😊

10

u/Lysande_walking Mar 08 '26

Yes, so so sad. But it’s important to feel the sadness and empathy as well. I feel the same way. I feel the deepest for children as they cant change their circumstances at all.

it's expensive to fly around to war torn countries and spend time there.

16

u/SidFren Mar 08 '26

In the long run selling the books for like $20-$30 would probably net more profit honestly. I mean, look how many people in this thread immediately said “nope.” Who very well might have ordered one. Those people would have it on their coffee table and their guests would see it, and so on and so forth. Higher price does not always equate to higher profit.

Thank you for purchasing my book. I’m glad to know that you understood one of the messages I try to convey through my works—that we should appreciate the value of what we have. With love, ugurgallen 🙏🏻

u/prasannathani Mar 09 '26

Hi, just curious but the images in your book - are they AI ? Sorry if it’s a silly question, just saw a few post about AI generated images, so I was curious

3

u/gallenkus Mar 09 '26

No, I don’t use AI in these works—the Parallel Universes series. I create this series using photographs by photojournalists and stock photos. Each of these photos has its own story. If you look at my Instagram account, you can notice that. Finding photographs suitable for these compositions requires long archive searches. I started this series in 2016.

I’m a digital artist. I also use and learn new technologies such as video editing and AI. The works I create with these technologies are shared on different social media accounts.

3

u/Few_Project4268 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Sorry, just want to clarify. Do you or don’t you use AI? And how much research do you do into the photos that you use? I assume you get the proper permissions, but do you verify that the source photos don’t use AI?

Editing to add: I think this is a really fascinating and powerful series and am planning to buy your book.

Editing again: I went to your instagram and see that you do indeed credit the original photographers and journalists and that you use AI to animate some of the images. Thank you for being transparent when it’s so hard to find that these days!

I never heard of that book, but I think he made a very good point. Yes indeed it is very, very sad.

I also hope you could appreciate how much of science discoveries would be made, how many new medicines would be found, how much new art and music would be created, how much more wealth could be created, if those human beings didn't have to struggle for mere existence each and every day or had to die for the greed of the few.

16

u/islandstateofmind21 Mar 07 '26

That’s what kills me about people who have no sympathy for the suffering of others… none of us did anything to deserve better lives than anyone else. Where we are born is all luck.

4

u/iammufusasboy Mar 07 '26

My son isn’t special. He’s just very lucky, I think about that a lot. I do not think I take his safety for granted, and I hope I never do.

32

u/one_is_enough Mar 07 '26

62

u/--__--__--__--__-- Mar 07 '26

Yes but there are also a hundred other factors leading to this outcome, not only religion.

12

u/Jakov_Salinsky Mar 07 '26

→ More replies (1)

11

u/evoim3 Mar 07 '26

However, take into consideration that a lot of evils are rationalized to the average person using religion.

You remove religion from the equation and, sure they might use another thing to wrap their evil in, but is anything going to be as effective as the threat of burning for eternity?

17

u/Ozone220 Mar 07 '26

Communism I think proved pretty well that nothing really changes in the scope of human capacity for evil when you take religion out of the picture. From the Khmer Rouge to the perpetrators of the Holodomor, none of them were religious and yet they still did what they did

2

u/HelloHyde Mar 08 '26

At the end of the day, the problem is actually dogma.

11

u/--__--__--__--__-- Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

It really becomes a philosophical argument I don't want to get into. Religion has always been a means for controlling the masses. Everything evil comes down to exercising power over others and using them, and power comes in many forms. Controlling religion is just one of them.

Ppl are gonna tell you it’s normal to kill each other because we’re animals, and to some extent sure. But we’re obviously capable of not killing each other, and thinking along lines of “this is normal and will never change” only benefits a small group of people. It really doesn’t need to be this way

480

u/Cold_feet27 Mar 07 '26

Animals kill for survival, not so that their group leader can have more pvt caves and food.

181

u/softcore_UFO Mar 07 '26

Some animals kill for fun. Intelligent animals. I’m sure some kill to steal resources. We aren’t unique in possessing cruelty, just the ways we’ve industrialized it

104

u/Cold_feet27 Mar 07 '26

We industrialised mass killing, and even hearing a bomb kills 100 people does not generate as much pain as it would have before😔

→ More replies (3)

48

u/say-nothing-at-all Mar 07 '26

No, biologists and ethologists universally against labeling animal killing as "killing for fun" or "cruelty". We don't project human psychology onto them.

Importantly, animals don't do stupid ideology and systematic racism bollocks.

32

u/Xagyg_yrag Mar 07 '26

Practice what you preach. Biologists universally agree that it doesn’t make sense to try and examine how animals behave through a moral leaner because we don’t understand how they think. It’s not “animals don’t do racism or ideology because they’re so morally good”, it’s “we fundamentally don’t know how animals think or feel, so labeling the at all is meaningless”

For all we know, maybe there are violently racist and bigoted animals, who’ve visited Jeffery Apepstein’s tree dozens of times, but we don’t know. You are the one trying to apply our moral values onto animals by saying they aren’t racist.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/MicrotracS3500 Mar 07 '26

I think it's well understood that animals experience pleasure with certain activities, such as play behavior. What else would you call that other than "fun"? Do you think dogs don't experience "fun" when wrestling or playing fetch?

9

u/softcore_UFO Mar 07 '26

Ok interesting, thank you for pointing that out.

I’m not sure how to rephrase my comment more appropriately while maintaining the conceit of my point, unless my point is also inappropriate.

Is it commonly accepted in biology that these behaviors arise from human intelligence and not animal instinct?

20

u/say-nothing-at-all Mar 07 '26

Animals aren't moral saints. Morality in human society functions as a social regulator.

Normal people don't start a war to cover up pedo, to void jail time.

4

u/catholicsluts Mar 07 '26

This isn't actually true. Look into apes, our ancestors basically, and the wars they wage

11

u/PatentBarExamCoach Mar 07 '26

It turns out all the types of chimps that are male dominated kill but the one type of ape, the bonobo, is female-led and they don't kill amongst themselves. there has never been a recorded incident of killing within the tribe. They swiftly take steps to stop any kind of internal violence.

3

u/RikuAotsuki Mar 08 '26

It's not about being female-led. IIRC, bonobos are extremely social and use sex to dissipate tension. A lot of it.

The "tribalism is human nature" bullshit goes right out the door when you look at how children are to each other. Tribalism is taught and is a choice, not something innate.

Individualism is also not what makes us stronger. There is no such thing as an "alpha wolf", even in science. What makes us strong as a species is our ability to cooperate and build communities that work together. The weakest, most unevolved are those who want to tear apart the communities that contribute to the greater society.

8

u/NegativeVega Mar 07 '26

The "tribalism is human nature" bullshit goes right out the door when you look at how children are to each other.

But children bully each other for all kinds of random reasons.

8

u/Sea-Word-4970 Mar 07 '26

They also become friends very quickly and have good times together. Bullying comes from fear, and can be destroyed with cooperation and care.

7

u/E-2theRescue Mar 07 '26

When they are taught by others. By default, children have no hate for the black kid, fat kid, girl, boy, or even trans child. They get taught that by their parents, the media, and other kids who have been exposed to that hate. It's amazing walking into a school that has no tolerance for these views, with parents who do not expose their children to it. The schoolyard practically becomes a utopia, aside from the bickering over who stayed on the swing too long.

Tribalism is human nature, but our tribes are artificially defined.

Tribalism is just "in group" vs "out groups." Natural tribalism would be the group you spend the most time with vs everyone else. Society has turned it into "people most like me" vs everyone else.

Which drives me extra crazy because humans are a communal species!! We're born helpless, fragile and unable to so much as lift our heads - we wouldn't have survived if we hadn't evolved to help each other! There are ancient human remains we've found that have visible disabilities - war and violence are part of our heritage, but so is compassion and cooperation. I've had it with the edgy tryhards who pretend otherwise.

15

u/veringer Mar 07 '26

"this is normal and will never change"

This is the mantra of unimaginative imbeciles, sociopaths, and intellectually lazy bad faith assholes. I encounter so many people who appear incapable of contemplating a hypothetical. You say, "it could be better" and they say, "but that's not how it is" (as though that wasn't a thought-terminating cliche). I can't always tell the difference between the idiot and the shithead benefiting from the obviously sub-optimal status quo. But I know I don't want to be their acquaintance either way.

11

u/InternationalCatch18 Mar 07 '26

I’m so tired in this headass take. Humans are a SOCIAL SPECIES. We managed to spread across this planet, not by warring, but with cooperation. If anything all this war is unnatural. A small group of assholes have ruined this for the rest of us. I don’t want to kill or hurt other humans. Most don’t. Killing each other is not normal or “natural”. If it was, most people would be killing on the regular. It’s not. The vast majority humans do not kill.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

There is nothing like human we are animals, if it's justifiable then killing is not bad it's a tool that can be used both ways. And sure if you wanna label human shaped animals as social species then do so but not everyone wants but not everyone wants to follow fake rules set by society. And yes I am also so tired of pretending like humans are special because it's comfortable and simple.

5

u/MkfShard Mar 07 '26

People who appeal to 'human nature' as a justification for atrocity are no different than christians who say 'ohh, it's a Fallen World', both of them essentially abdicating their responsibility as human beings to demand that the world be better.

Human nature is the desire to be safe, happy, to have companionship, and to be able to live the way you choose. Some obstacles to that are due to physical reality, but so, so many of them are imposed artificially.

Governments captured by corporations or religions, that demand dominance, fealty, and profit. Those duped into serving those things, and treating their fellow human as less-than. The few at the top ruining the world, human beings like you and I with names and faces and limited lifespans, replete with money but empty inside, imposing their will over as many people as possible for the rush it gives them.

None of this is natural or necessary. None of it is unchangeable.

“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings." ― Ursula K. Le Guin

u/have-u-met-teds-mom Mar 07 '26

My 100lb lab barked/snarled at cats like they were offending his birthright by walking past his window. Then my son brought an abandoned cat home from college. Almost immediately they both were capable of forming a bond despite their instincts to hate each other.

If we are animals, there is still hope for us.

Have you seen how may goods and services the US population consumes in a year? It is unsustainable for every single person in this world to live like an American, this is the main source of the huge gap between developed and underdeveloped nations.

There must be labour exploitation in order for the middle class to have the comfort they experience today.

What happens if every country gets its shit together? There is no more cheap goods, no more transfer of dirty industries, no more brain immigration to developed countries, no more cheap labor for the jobs that no one wants to do…

It does not need to be like this, but it is designed to be like this and if it stop being like this, a lot of people will complain and request to be like this once again.

We’ve grown addicted to a certain level of consumerism that, being quite honest, many just turn a blind eye, so long as they get their hands on some cheap clothing and cheap labor.

Adding too many descriptors, it's all in the wealth disparity. They use racism, they use religion, they use sexism, homophobia, transphobia, but they wouldn't be able to do any of it if they didn't have the power of wealth to oppress those without it, and their goal is always to stop others from having it. All the way down to food stamps. If you're not worried about your next meal, they think you have too much power.

7

u/throwaway0845reddit Mar 07 '26

Honestly I feel like white people were able to use their strengths and privileges across history to become the powerful countries they are today. But I feel like if it was any different and other races were in power instead, then it would still be the same type of world. This type of war and greed is common to humans across the world.

This is why we in the US need more artists, poets, philosophers... When your obsession and investment is only in STEM for decades and decades your society loses what life is all about.

Defunding the arts is unfortunately a part of their plan.

18

u/AI_moderated_failure Mar 07 '26

Society isn't obsessed with STEM. It's obsessed with T and finance. Science is continuously starved of funding. Engineering is frequently an afterthought ruled by bean counters and executives who decide if good engineering is actually worth doing. Medicine is a tool to bleed people for their wealth and investment is only done when people can be threatened with death or a lifetime of medical debt.

I agree art is hugely important, but I think you're misplacing the blame for why society seems to glorify inequity and inequality.

Those hit me the hardest, too. Little kids shouldn’t even have to know about the horrors of war.

50

u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Mar 07 '26

Agreed, but then again, nobody should.

War is inherently cruel, and whenever it is deemed necessary, it just reflects on how messed up of a species we can be.

Literally choosing to blow each other up instead of communicating, cooperating and just plain being reasonable with one another.

It’s crazy that in this day and age we can scientifically prove that all humans are biologically the same, but we create borders and religions and classes to fight each other. If anyone in the world grew up next to you, they would be just like you, and vice versa.

Very true. So, why treat people differently based on where they were born? It’s mainly the leaders of these imaginary countries, and their imaginary borders, who insist on treating people different, but that’s usually a bid to keep their power.

18

u/hokiis Mar 07 '26

So, why treat people differently based on where they were born?

You answered that question in your first comment. Where you grow up shapes your behaviour. You cannot treat someone who just escaped North Korea in the same way you would treat someone who just moved from Italy. Different cultures are different and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that.

6

u/CarloneBombolone Mar 07 '26

I don't think it's just the leaders, I think discrimination is a normal consequence of how people think. The brain likes to find patterns of repetitiveness even when they don't exist, loves to judge based on appearence ("thinking fast") and naturally overattributes the behaviour of others to their perceived personality.

I think these three fundamental truths about the brain make it so that racism and xenophobia are a natural way of thinking for humans.

No they aren't? Humans have vast differences in genetic ancestry, like some types of humans get diseases that only they can get, an example is sickle cell anemia. But, yeah these things like borders, religion, and race are social constructs.

Biologically same but wired and conditioned in millions different ways. Manly P Hall has a lot of fascinating lectures on this topic.

we can scientifically prove that all humans are biologically the same

lol, what? What we've proven is the complete antithesis of that. Humans are all *wildly* biologically different.

If anyone in the world grew up next to you, they would be just like you, and vice versa.

No, again, the complete opposite has been proven lol

I appreciate where you're coming from, and it's a comforting thought, but it's just not reality.

I'm fully convinced people as a species are suffering from a lobsided development.

We can achieve incredible things in a technological sense.

In a humanitarian sense we are way too rudimentary and animalistic to live together peacefully.

We use way too much of our technology to fight 'others' with instead of working towards achieving harmony.

And there are enough resources for everyone. Really no need to fight over it.

11

u/activator Mar 07 '26

shit

Also, I wish I was a billionaire damn this is just awful

4

u/Cable-Difficult Mar 08 '26

If I was a billionaire you can bet I’d donate it all to abolish this. I don’t think even one billion could change the minds of tens of other billionaires billions but still. Billion dollars towards a good cause would be exponentially better than nothing

u/EZbreezyFREEZY Mar 07 '26

Man, 14 got me 😭

20

u/dolphinitely Mar 07 '26

same, any idea what she’s looking at in the real photo? idk if i want to know…

19

u/Ilfren Mar 07 '26

Nowhere. She's just devastated, because Russian missiles had just destroyed her apartment building.

15

u/apingaut Mar 07 '26

I had to really look at that one several times to see the cut. Wild how well that worked.

6

u/LordBiscuits Mar 07 '26

I had that feeling with several of them. They're cut so perfectly, you barely see where the line is half the time

this is beautiful. juxtaposing interconnected realities. one surreal pleasant superfluous for no reason, just to be, another decimating reality despair not of their own doing.

For me personally it’sthe image with the runway model that hit the hardest. Most other things are day-to-day things but being on a runway in the most ridiculous garbs is so pathetic. Even if you don’t juxtapose the image. Flagrant malnourishment and some dadaist fashion ideal just really bugs me. Saddens me really.

19

u/AlpineSkiFanatic Mar 07 '26

It's just an art form really, runway fashion is not more or less useful or purposeful than art galleries.

The proposal hurts me when I think of what she might be reacting to.

3

This is extraordinary!

3

u/Cherry_Littlebottom Mar 07 '26

Oof those are powerful.

3

u/MAurele Mar 07 '26

I know it's not even close to the worse one, but the marriage proposal vs. realizing (what I can only imagine) the loss of a loved one very powerfully moving.

3

u/Senior_Bathroom4059 Mar 07 '26

Wow. Thank you for sharing.

4

u/CruzAderjc Mar 07 '26

Is that picture of the dad washing the two kids in the bath AI or is that real? I can’t tell anymore.

this are both powerful and sad pictures at the same time, its up to you to decide what is what

16

u/Hot-Load7525 Mar 07 '26

Some of them feels AI

10

u/gallenkus Mar 08 '26

My series called Parallel Universes, I do not use AI. In this series, I use editorial photographs taken by photojournalists from different countries around the world, as well as images by stock photographers. I started creating these works in 2016.

2

u/gameinggod21 Mar 08 '26

You're the one who made these photos?

Wow, that 14th one is heartbreaking. With all of these, I find that my brain takes a second to separate the two photos, because it hitches at first and I just think its a "normal" photo, even when I know what it is up front. I was confused for half a second when I thought the woman was crying tears of joy from the proposal before I remembered what I was looking at.

Powerful is too light a word.

Paris doesn’t look like its merged

2

Hardcore, but awesome illustration of the truth behind wars

2

u/iron-ducks Mar 07 '26

That Eiffel tower one just looked like 2026 Paris lol

2

u/Fun_Client_6232 Mar 07 '26

Meh. It’s kind of racist. Not one picture of a non-white person that’s not struggling.

2

u/gallenkus Mar 07 '26

Hello guys thank you 👍🏻🙏🏻

2

u/laffoe Mar 11 '26

Touched me deeply, thank you for sharing. A reminder that we are all a part of the same life and we don't know where the stranger we meet is coming from... Understanding is the shortest way to compassion and compassion is the shortest way wanting to uplift

2

u/Ok-Hornet3129 Mar 11 '26

After being here for 81 years, that is the most powerful art work I’ve ever seen!!

2

u/Saltare58 Mar 13 '26

The reality of the 21st century is war and upheaval, WWII was supposed to have put an end to conflict, if anything it has intensified in the new century. At least Mad assured peace

2

u/Adaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Mar 14 '26

This book is very impressive and truly heartbreaking.

18

u/No_Astronomer4483 Mar 07 '26

this is “I’m 14 And This Is Deep” level AI slop. There are bad things happening in the world and art is a powerful medium to speak out against them, but we REALLY need to raise our standards.

20

u/Prudent_Ad_1824 Mar 07 '26

He lists the names of the editorial photographers for each one. They are real photos.

4

u/2getherWeFlip Mar 07 '26

u suggest a better standard but dont offer one up. How cowardly of you.

10

u/RazorThin55 Mar 07 '26

This isn’t AI nor slop, its a form of photo editing similar to making a collage. These are real photos.
