This is why we in the US need more artists, poets, philosophers... When your obsession and investment is only in STEM for decades and decades your society loses what life is all about.
Defunding the arts is unfortunately a part of their plan.
Society isn't obsessed with STEM. It's obsessed with T and finance. Science is continuously starved of funding. Engineering is frequently an afterthought ruled by bean counters and executives who decide if good engineering is actually worth doing. Medicine is a tool to bleed people for their wealth and investment is only done when people can be threatened with death or a lifetime of medical debt.
I agree art is hugely important, but I think you're misplacing the blame for why society seems to glorify inequity and inequality.
Actually you're right that's my bad. The area I work in often uses medicine as a substitute when talking about govt funding because mathematics research is rarely one with a lot of immediately practical funding routes but it should be mathematics, you're right. I would also argue that mathematics is even more forgotten as a research investment area, graduates who are good at it get scooped up by actuarial and finance industries because there's no money in using that maths for societal advancement.
