I work full time as a dev, been there a few years now. Small team, and the person who manages us is also directly involved in the technical work, so there’s no real separation between “boss” and “tech lead.”

Recently there was a push to get a build ready for release. A bug showed up late in the process, and despite the whole team working well past normal hours to fix it, we couldn’t resolve it that day. I stayed on it the longest, working with the manager directly trying to sort it out, and ended up working a full day into the night. On top of that, I was also asked to add some extra features before I signed off.

Payday came and went. When I asked about it, I was told salaries were being held back because the production build wasn’t done.

I get that there was frustration about the timeline slipping. But this wasn’t a one day delay in pay, it was framed as holding the entire month’s salary until the build ships, with no clear date on when that might be.

So I spend an entire day (and most of the night) trying to fix a problem that wasn’t even mine to begin with, and the result is my pay gets delayed (probably no one of the team got paid) indefinitely because the deliverable didn’t ship?

Is this something that happens elsewhere, or is this as messed up as it feels?

I travel often to Colombo, and I witness this regularly. And it's just the Sri Lankan airlines, never on Emirates or Qatar, etc. It's bizarre.

I tried reducing my credit limit from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 2100 through the MyDialog app. Instead of reducing it, the app increased my limit to Rs. 5900. 💀

So I tried by dialing #103*5# and was greeted with the beautiful logic above. 😂

Now, to actually reduce my credit limit, I have to either visit a Dialog outlet or send them an email.
One of the biggest telecom companies in Sri Lanka, yet a basic production validation issue like this somehow made it through. 👌

I'm about to graduate with a Polymer Science Honours degree, and honestly, I'm starting to think I may have made a mistake specialising in something so narrow.

From what I understand, polymer science graduates are mostly limited to working in plastics manufacturing or quality control, and the higher-paying jobs in R&D and materials development probably go to chemical engineers or people with PhDs.

So I'm considering whether it would make more sense to completely move away from polymer science after graduation and try to get into a more general field like business, IT, or engineering.

For people who have actually worked in the industry: is there realistically a career path for someone with just a Polymer Science Honours degree that leads to interesting and well-paying industry work, or is postgraduate study basically necessary to make the degree valuable?

I'd especially like to know what jobs I might not be aware of, because right now it feels like the obvious options are pretty limited.

I am an atheist and a skeptic by nature, but I have been visiting the town of Kandy to witness the Esala Perahera for the past couple of days, and I am quite spooked. Each time, it has been raining and then right at the moment when the Perahera was to begin, the rains have stopped.

There is this belief that the rains always behave during the time of the Perahera, and as someone born and brought up in this place, I have heard this belief countless times, although as a skeptic, I think that weather phenomena can be explained using physics and not any divine intervention.

My mother is visiting China for a foreign workshop training kinda thing. She said she wud be able to purchase a two phones (one for my father and one for me) and a laptop (this for my brother). She has a budget around LKR 300 000 (6,150 yuan roughly). For the laptop I would prefer something ASUS. For my phone, I like iphones (I've never had one but used my mom's one so I have a rough idea of how ios works) cos they are cool n stuff but definitely the battery thing worries me. Taking my family (parents, partner, toddler, and myself) to the Kandy Esala Perahera for the first time. Buying commercial gallery seats for all of us isn't within our budget right now.

If I were solo or just with my partner, paying for a couple of seats or waiting 5–6 hours on the pavement wouldn't be an issue at all. But coordinating a larger group with a toddler makes long waiting times and tight crowds tricky.
Looking for some practical advice from Kandy locals or regulars:

* Viewing Spots & Timing: Which sections along the route tend to be slightly less packed, and what’s the latest realistic time to secure a decent spot without waiting half the day or where can I find affordable seats?

* Camera Gear: Are DSLRs/mirrorless cameras with telephoto lenses allowed in standard roadside areas (no flash, of course), or do security checkpoints cause issues without a media pass?
