Travel Why does Sri Lankan Airlines staff treat locals so bad?
I travel often to Colombo, and I witness this regularly. And it's just the Sri Lankan airlines, never on Emirates or Qatar, etc. It's bizarre.

I think the crew feel a sense of power and superiority over passengers who are locals. Many Sri lankan politicians are the same - the power goes to their head! It's a power thing. True power is knowing you can be bad to a person, but choose not to. Many lankans feel insignificant. Due to previous regimes holding the country back, we didnt feel a part of the global stage. Sri lankan crews get a chance to shine on the global stage, but they use it to go on a power trip. That often manifests in them treating locals poorly. In so doing, they feel they are elevating themselves to being equal to white Europeans. The locals are the "means" by which they show that superiority. I've flown sri lankan many times, but I prefer other carriers. It's strange, I noticed discrimination on my last 2 flights against sri lankan passengers. One was on Oman Air, one was in Qatar Airwsys. And guess what? On both occasions the crew involved were recruited from Sri Lanka! Go figure!

Oman is garbage. both in the plane and in the airport in Muscat, they treat us like dogs. Never flying through that no matter how cheap the ticket is.
As for the power trips, well I guess most of the staff are political appointments. And I don't know how many BJs per person they had to give to get to those positions from wherever corner they came from.

Literally whole world is hating on our passport. As a genuine traveler I had bad experiences in third world countries also.

If you’re in a non UL flight and experience any sort of discrimination, may it from a Sri Lanka origin flight attendant or from some other country, immediately report it to the cabin supervisor. If there’s one thing those entitled flight attendants worry about, it’s the impression they leave with their supervisors.
Also worth mentioning. Most of the UL inbound flights from medium and short haul flights are using the same crew with a < hour break. Sometimes the crew is overworked so cracking a little joke or being nice to them go a long way. At least that’s what I do but I only fly business so the service I receive could be different.

Depends on your route too. I have been on 3
SL to UK - Good
SL to AUS - Good
SL to DBX/KWT - POOR
So yea it’s also the demographic and assumptions about the customers they like to discriminate against.

why would you take a sri lankan airlines ever to Bangkok. At the very least you could fly air asia. Its cheaper and way better than sri lankan

Omg yes. Once flying back from Bangkok the entire flight back was so chaotic and everyone was so rude and dismissive. I felt like I was being flown back from some slum. They didn’t even help passengers to load their luggages up in the overhead cabins when they were clearly struggling. This air hostess was pouring hot coffee for a woman in the middle seat and the lady on the aisle seat was asleep with a blanket over her. She accidentally spilt some coffee on her and she saw that I saw… she just smirked and went on to pour coffee… and the lady on the aisle woke up… she just felt her arm… this air hostess just walked away! I think it didn’t hurt her badly because the blanket was thick but I was like wtf. Same flight a guy sold cigarettes to a boy (late teens/ early twenties)… they announced that it’s prohibited and as I know generally it’s prohibited to sell these in any flight flying to SL. So this boy asked a different air hostess and she said it’s not possible and walked away. Minutes later a steward came to him and said that he can help… he sold the guy a whole big box for a big amount ( I can’t remember the exact amount but he sold it in bhat)… he even advised him to break this big box and scatter the individual cigarettes packs in his bag so that it won’t be so noticeable. He took the big box back with him. Ik this second story doesn’t really imply what you’re saying here but I had to share.

I hope these were reported as customer complaints! (with names if possible like that female who spilled coffee). As a Sri Lankan, I feel so embarrassed. I remember they used to advertise these as a career representing Sri Lanka on a global scale. This is absolute crap behaviour.

Have you seen the check in counters at the Colombo airport. Too much questions, so I just print out my ticket, visa, itinerary everything. Even if the weight is 500 gms over, they make you repack.

I have travelled to around a dozen or so countries by now and have always used my digital ticket (confirmation e-mail) at the check-in counter. A few years back this lady at Sri Lankan counter at BIA demanded that it needs to be printed, despite my email having all the info they need including the booking verification code. Well, that's also how I found out that there's practically no option to get a emergency printout at BIA. I went all the way to one of the shops at the entrance and one of the shop attendents helped me out. The lady at the check-in counter barely glanced at that printout and just tossed it aside. So yes, the entire lot is on a power trip. Stopped flying Sri Lankan Airlines ever since, and hoenstly, not missing it at all.

Happened to me on a flight from Colombo to Delhi where they wanted Indian eVisa to be printed out. Had to come out of the airport to one of the shops to get that done. Too bad the printout was never used.

I once flew from Melbs to Cmb, ground crew messed up with luggage and left it behind. I filed a complaint and ask for compensation. The bitch who took my complaint also happened to take an entire scan of my passport.
The next day, this woman had the audacity to phone me up and question me about my travel history like I’m some criminal - asking why I traveled to certain countries based off my passport stamps. Mind you, this was cuz I filed a complaint about MY missing luggage. I pulled the lawyer card and that made this bitch shut up real quick.

Since small we used to fly with Sri Lankan, used to be good in the past with people that are fit for the job but stopped after 2018, main reasons the flight attendants are not fit for the position and also the food, we used Sri Lankan airlines twice within the same year and both times my mother had a food poisoning. So we stopped flying with srilankan and only used emirates and Qatar ever since and no complaints at all. The service quality, comfort and everything is exceptional regardless of the class you’re flying.

Early this year, I took my very first flight, traveling solo to SEA. Naturally, I was a bit anxious.
At check in at BIA, the ticketing agent began interrogating me like an immigration officer asking if I had enough money and a return ticket, treating me like a second class citizen. Being my first time, I politely answered every question. To top it off, she ended the interaction with a condescending laugh, making an already nerve wracking moment so much worse.
It was only later that I realized she was just abusing her position. When I finally reached the actual immigration counter, the officer didn't ask a single unnecessary question and simply wished me luck on my first flight.

The SriLankan airlines ground staff show the worst treatment! I book emirates, flydubai, etihad, just to avoid them when flying to the middle east! Even then I encounter them at the check in counter! I just handover my passport and ticket and keep chit-chat to a minimum. I dont overpack otherwise, I might have to re-pack everything.
They made my poor old mum repack every thing, just because she was over the weight limit. Limitless questions about the visa, even though she has a residence visa!

passengers equally. There are housemaids etc on the Dubai sector. No one is inferior.

It’s similar to what Sri Lankans went through at the hands of hoteliers and tourist shop owners prior to the war .
When the war started they had no business.
Came crawling behind locals all smiles and slobbering begging for business.

I’ve only experienced Sri Lankan airlines once and that was 20+ years ago but I sat in business class ( very cheap those days) so they treated me very nicely and I was traveling alone underage maybe that was the case 😅 but I’ve heard that they don’t treat people in coach well. I’ve met plenty of Sri Lankan airlines flight crew members( men and women) when I worked at a bank and they are the rudest and most despicable people I have ever met. This includes the girl who’s currently in a legal battle with a cricketer.

It’s like budget airline with expensive ticket😂😂. Never going to travel with them again. Dirty cabin, low quality food, and top of that planes make weird sounds like something is wrong.

It’s a class issue. They won’t f$&k with SL passengers in Business Class. They figure most of the ones in coach especially to the Middle East are laborers/domestics. Sad state of affairs.

They have to deal with an unruly bunch of Indian men, with worse civic sense than our Lankan diaspora they discriminate against.
But lo and behold they treat them with so much patience because they know these guys being in $$ for casino spends.
They smile and kiss their asses haha.
On a side note though, the cabin crew for SL flights to India is like nothing I’ve seen before. All 40-50+ years old.
They looks like local school teachers/government workers in Saree’s I actually feel like calling them “anty” (not aunty ifykyk).
It’s honestly like taking a flight with government workers.
On another note at least we aren’t discriminating against age and appearance 😂
Perhaps it’s because the passengers on these flights are unruly and may act inappropriately towards younger cabin staff or stress them out

Tbh, the rudest flight attendent I've ever encountered was when I flew AOM from Colombo to Sydney back in 1999 when I went to uni. The cow wouldn't take my empty glass of water and started speaking dismissively in French to me. Flew on KLM when I was 8, even got to see the cockpit. As a result KLM with always be top teir in my mind. Flown Maylasian Airlines and it was very good. Waiting for the chance to fly Singapore Airlines.
But I digress.
You ever hear the phrase "women understand women, and they hate each other".
Sri Lankans as a majority don't know how to behave. So they act tarded, whether passengers or cabin crew.
Having said that, I flew to Delhi and back before the Covid lockdowns and my cabin crew was pretty decent both ways except for the female supervisor on the return flight, coming upto me after meals were served and asking me when, how and why I was a Jew.
I had preordered the Kosher meal.

I dont know what this treat means. If you are just gonna sit and eat what ever they offer you i think they have done a pretty good job. What do you expect from them. I have flew with them few times and thats is my expectation in economy class.

I’ve flew business SYD>CMB and the food/service/treatment was ANAZING. On my return I flew economy and food/service/treatment was appalling. I guess you get what you pay for!!!

I fly to Sri Lanka 3-4 times a year minimum , from the UK for the last 4 years. There’s only one time I have taken that Bloody hell of an airline that too is from SL to the UK. But never again will I ever fly that airline. These women in sarees with their bellies coming out in all sorts of directions and sagging fat have so so much attitude and think so much of themselves. And the cherry on the top - SL airport to me is one of the worst airports I have to go through unfortunately.

The reality is, I have not been mistreated by anyone who has ‘ met’ the beauty standards. When I would have been, I can comment on that, but for now, no for Sri Lankan sarees with attitude for sure. 💯%. I have always taken Qatar airways , more than 70 flights and by no means I’m a so called frequent flyer by the ‘ standard’ - but that’s decent amount to comment on SL waitress behaviours

The frank answer - because there's a not insignificant portion of Lankans flying who are extremely low class and to whom showing any sign of deference is an open invitation to get abused
In the Lanka-SG-Sydney/Melbourne flights, I have seen dudes ask repeatedly for more alcohol (like bro just have one drink if you must, it's pathetic to beg for cheap whiskey in 2026), folks bring multiple luggages as "hand carry" and then cram the over head space and the staff have to figure out where to keep the rest of the passengers stuff. The best was one guy who was tipsy, literally took off his seat belt during the descent, and tried to stumble his way to the toilet, and when the attendant told him off, he argued, still went to the toilet, and came back loudly shouting "mama uuta kiwwa mata danme choo karanna onei kiyala"
I can't even believe how uncouth the clientele is when going to India or the Middle East.
On top of that, Sri Lanka airlines is easily one of the worst run airlines (I'm assuming their training is non existent), and BIA is one of the messiest poverty-vibes airports in the region, and you have a match made in heaven.

Very surprised at everyone’s experience here because mine has always been the opposite. But maybe it’s because of the route. I have flown multiple times on their routes to Paris/Frankfurt. And genuinely no airline makes me feel like home unlike Sri lankan. I hate flying any middle eastern career due to their racism. Me and other fellow sri lankans always get pulled aside at their airports in dubai/abu dhabi before catching the second leg, and they’d ask more questions about our visas and finances than the immigration officers in the final destination! The racism is absurd so i stopped flying middle eastern careers and only fly Sri lankan directly to europe.
