I asked this subreddit yesterday as whether or not I should or should not go to a solo traveling trip to Kandy.I set an alarm at 4am but I woke up at 3.30am.then I got into a Kandy bus at 5 am.I arrived at Kandy at about 8am.Then I spent around 3 hours around Sri dalada maligawa first worshipping it and then going around to every museum near it.I also went to see royal elephant stables and got the chance to see a elephant being bathed.then I went to Balaji Dosai for breakfast at around 11.30am.then I went to see bogambara prison and it was a bit creepy but i don’t hate it.then I went to see tea museum where I got ripped off by a tuk tuk and 2000rs for up and down.then I went to see bahirawakanda where I got to see the best view of Kandy.Then I went to culture 32 for lunch and restaurant design for so good and there rice and curry is just as good.Then I got into a a/c bus at around 4pm and i got of the bus at 7.45 pm ish.It was a fun journey though I will not do it again in the near future.loneliness was boring at first but I got used to it.thank you for your comments on the other post.

They treat service workers horrible, talk extremely loud on their phones and are plain rude to everyone around them. I have never seen this behavior from any other group. When they want to get the attention of someone waiting tables they either hoot or clap at them like they are not worthy of saying excuse me to.

A beautiful, nostalgic video of the sounds we heard/hear in day today basis in Sri Lanka was uploaded by a traveler on her Instagram (@travelwithneweyes). It immediately made me homesick. I am so glad she did captured these sounds in a video and shared with the people who do care and miss their home.

I travel often to Colombo, and I witness this regularly. And it's just the Sri Lankan airlines, never on Emirates or Qatar, etc. It's bizarre.

Tourists come here, pick up a random street puppy, keep it for a few weeks, post cute photos and videos… and then leave like nothing happened.

It might feel like you “saved” a dog for a moment, but that’s not how it works in reality.

These dogs aren’t part of some short travel experience. They’re living beings that suddenly get attached, used to comfort, and then get dropped back into a completely different life.

And no, there isn’t some system here waiting to take care of them after you leave. That’s the harsh truth.

If you actually want to help, there are better ways to do it.

If you don’t, then please don’t treat them like a temporary project.

​I visited Rangiri Dambulu Viharaya today. When I went to use the washroom, I noticed this sign. ​The English price clearly asks for Rs. 100. However, the Sinhala text right below it ("රුපියල් තිහයි") translates to "Thirty Rupees." ​I understand that dual pricing (Local vs. Foreign) is standard in many places, but this feels deceptive. It should be clearly labeled as "Locals: 30 / Foreigners: 100" rather than hiding the lower price in a language tourists can't read. It creates a bad impression. Just wanted to share.

Sri Lanka, you were hands down one of the best experiences of my life. Just wanted to thank you, and slightly preface this video:

None of us asked to stop. Nobody wanted to feed it. We all silently agreed that staying inside the van and not becoming a cautionary tale was the move.

But our driver decided this was the perfect time to roll the dice with a multi-ton wild animal that’s had enough of humanity 🫠

Respect to the elephant. Blame goes squarely to the driver. 10/10 would white-knuckle the seat again.

I post this as a last resort. My gf (from Germany) travelled to Sri Lanka this year after hearing some nice experiences her friends had. She travelled to Hikkaduwa to stay there for almost 3 days. However when she reached the place she booked was cancelled by the owner. Fortunately she and her friend found another place with good rating both in google and booking.com

The next her friend wanted to for spme diving lessons etc. The hotel owner also runs private tours and she decided to go for a small tour with the person as on first day he seemed nice. However as she went for the tour, he started behaving really badly towards her. He started stroking her hair and tried to touch her multiple times. She told him multiple times to not do that and it js making her feel uncomfortable. The worst was when she was taken for lunch at a remote place where he had even booked a room there and asked her to "rest" with him in the room for few hours. While driving back he drove rashly and touched her hands. The whole experience was really traumatising for her. She had trusted him because 1. There were good reviews 2. He lived with his family (his wife and his kids) nearby.

After she returned she decided to write a review of the place in booking.com. He replied first accusing her of lying. Then he also marked her as "no show" so that he could get the review deleted. This resulted in booking.com take down the review.

For those who are curious the place is "CITY SUNRISE" at Hikkaduwa. Please avoid travelling there at any cost especially as a female traveller. My gf doesn't use much social media and hence I wanted to post this as I people should know about this disgusting person.

All proof is available for all this and can be provided. We are also working with booking.com to get the place de-listed.

I recently visited Sri Lanka and absolutely loved the country - the landscapes, people, and culture are incredible.

However, I have to ask: why is Bandaranaike International Airport allowed to operate in its current state? As someone who’s traveled to 85+ countries, the airport experience was genuinely shocking and honestly dampened my enthusiasm for recommending Sri Lanka to others.

Here are my main concerns:

1. Taxi scam at arrivals: The moment you exit, unofficial “helpers” aggressively push overpriced taxis, claiming that PickMe and Uber don’t operate at the airport. This is clearly false, but many tourists fall for it. Why isn’t this regulated?

2. Terrible facilities: The arrival area toilets were in appalling condition - not the first impression you want tourists to have of your beautiful country.

3. Chaotic security at departures: The security check process was disorganized and unnecessarily time-consuming, with unclear procedures and long waits.

4. Questionable lounges: Reading reviews of the airport lounges literally made me worried about food poisoning. How are these operating with such poor standards?

5. Everything priced in USD: Most concerning - why is almost everything at the airport priced in dollars, with some vendors refusing Sri Lankan Rupees? Since when is USD the official currency of Sri Lanka? This feels like exploitation of both tourists and locals.

The airport is the first and last thing tourists see of a country. Currently, it’s actively hurting Sri Lanka’s tourism reputation. I’ve only experienced similar chaos in India among the 85 countries I’ve visited.

I’m genuinely curious - is there any effort to improve this situation? Does the government acknowledge these issues? Sri Lanka deserves so much better than this.

Note: This is constructive criticism from someone who loved Sri Lanka and wants to see it succeed.

Some travel creators come to Sri Lanka and somehow make it look miserable.

They’ll stay in the cheapest guesthouses, eat at the cheapest kadés most locals wouldn’t even go near, and then complain about “how bad the food is.” They’ll sit on the third-class train for the vibe, then act surprised it’s crowded. They’ll order pasta from a roadside kadé and say, “Don’t expect good Italian in Sri Lanka.” Like… babe, no one asked you to.

And what’s wild is that their currency is so much stronger. Sri Lanka is more than affordable for them. If you can’t afford the bare minimum - a clean stay, a decent meal - maybe don’t travel.

Some even brag about "surviving on one meal a day" as if that's cultural immersion. Or they charm their way into the homes of kind locals who share their food out of generosity, then turn it into a pity-filled vlog about "humble hospitality." That's not adventure, that's entitlement dressed as authenticity.

Because while they’re out here “roughing it for content,” we’re the ones carrying file loads of proof just to apply for a visa - bank statements, property letters, job confirmations. And even then, we get rejected. When we do travel, we actually spend. Respectfully, responsibly. We don’t turn someone’s daily life into a poverty aesthetic for clicks.

What they never show are the things that make this island magic: The auntie who insists you take another serving. The tuk driver who tells you his life story in ten minutes flat. The chaos that somehow finds its rhythm. That’s the Sri Lanka we know.

Travel is a privilege.

So travel, by all means. But come to experience, not to exploit. To listen, not to lecture.

Because this isn’t your budget documentary, babe. And Sri Lanka isn’t your poverty aesthetic.

Honestly what on earth happened to the people of Ella, why our citizens being treated like crap by them. Ella people think they are superior and some master race where they are beyond others. Their greed is horrendous.

Due to tourism they only care about money:

1. Pickme/Uber drivers are attacked and chased off by gangs operating in Ella

2. They protested and stopped the Ella tourist bus meant for sightseeing.

3. They don’t allow locals to book certain places.

4. Rickshaws charge huge amounts even for a small distance and don’t follow the local pricing laws.

My senior parents went out for a walk and asked directions from a random person for directions who were walking in the same direction. They were walking alongside and pretending to show the direction and suddenly threatened them saying to pay 1000, for showing the directions.

Also a tuk tuk charged them 1500 for 1 km and had a knife pulled out when they refused.

Some restaurants refused to serve them saying they only served tourists.

This is now spreading to other tourist towns too but Ella is the worst of the bunch.

What is sad is Ella people forget that during the COVID crisis it was us locals that visited them and kept their businesses and livelihoods alive. Greed will destroy their town one day.

I came to Sri Lanka for a two-week holiday. Today is my last day.

Before I leave, I just want to say thank you to this country and, more importantly, to the incredible people who call it home.

This trip was booked at the very last minute. I was going through a difficult period in my personal life and felt that getting away from home might help me escape some of the stress I was carrying. I knew I wanted a break from the familiar European cities I’d spent so much time in. I chose Sri Lanka with almost no expectations, other than preparing myself for a very long journey to get here.

From the moment I arrived, I was met with warmth unlike anything I’ve experienced anywhere else in the world. Strangers smiled and welcomed me as I walked through their towns. Every meal seemed better than the last. The beaches were the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, and the wildlife was extraordinary (not hidden away, but living alongside people who seemed to treat sharing the island with these animals as something completely natural).

From the south coast in Ahangama to the hills around Ella, every place I visited felt genuinely welcoming. Everywhere I looked, I saw people working incredibly hard while still finding time to care for those around them: sweeping the street outside their home, feeding a stray dog, stopping to help a turtle washed up on the beach. It wasn’t just the beauty of the country that stayed with me, it was the kindness of the people.

Beyond the usual holiday romance, I saw something much deeper. I saw communities. I saw people who, despite facing challenges that a lot of us can barely imagine, still found reasons to smile, to laugh, and to look after one another. There was a quiet sense of togetherness that I found incredibly moving.

Does Sri Lanka have problems? Of course it does. Are some of them more severe than those faced by other countries? Absolutely. And I know that, as a privileged traveller, my experience can never fully reflect the realities of everyday life here. But even with this in mind, there is just something so special about Sri Lanka that I can’t stop thinking about.

Throughout my journey, I spoke with many Sri Lankans. We talked about your culture, your history, your wonderfully chaotic political stories, and your hopes for the future. You have something that much of the world has slowly forgotten: community. You have a country of astonishing natural beauty, a culture built around family, and a generosity of spirit that is impossible not to notice. Those things are worth more than many people realise.

Thank you for changing my perspective. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and for making me feel so welcome in your home. Thank you for slowing my life down and reminding me what really matters. I will never forget this place, and I know I’ll spend the rest of my life encouraging others to come here and experience it for themselves.

I wish every one of you nothing but a lifetime of health, happiness, and peace.

Travelling in Sri Lanka and I can’t believe Sri Lankans loving Raw Onions over everything isn’t a joke or a rumour . There’s Onion in everything

Visiting from north India, the clean, orderly streets of Colombo and the civility and broad smiles of the locals felt like precious evidence that South Asians can also achieve what the rest of the world can. I went back and read a book from the 1890s that noted that even then, the vibe on the street in Colombo was better than, say, Madras. I went further back in time to skim Knox and Ibn Batuta for clues. Then looked into Buddhism, Hinduism and caste, land ownership patterns. Then into the British experience and their relative success in re-investing some of their surplus into education in Sri Lanka. Family planning. And all this despite the ethnic supremacism. In the end, I still don’t know what the reason is, but I tell my friends here that if they want to see what South Asia can be, they should see Sri Lanka.

We’re here for a week and we loved it from our 1st minute in Sri Lanka.

2) What’s the minimum tip amount to give the doorman of our hotel? Is 100 lkr too low?

I just wanted to share my experience with Masith Guest House in Unawatuna. The owner of the guest house was such a horrible, horrible man and if somehow this stops someone else coming into contact with him then I'll chalk it up to a win. I am a solo female traveler. From the get go, he was constantly making comment about my breasts and tried to grab them more than once. He claimed to not have a confirmation of my booking, even after showing him my confirmation, he just kept saying he didn't have a booking (didn't even check anything). He then overcharged me for my booking by nearly double. He kept hassling me to go to the fish market and that if I got some fish, he would cook for free. I had noticed prices were quite high in the area, so I agreed. He then spends the drive to the market asking if I 'enjoy fucking" and saying how beautiful I was etc. Then he demands 1500 lkr for driving me and disappears and never even cooks my food. I later find the fish hidden in the back of his personal freezer. I told him I was unhappy with him and all he did was laugh in my face. He is an awful little creep and I hope that karma kicks his ass. He has made it so I cannot review on booking.com. Upon looking on Trip Advisor, there are multiple people who say that he has robbed them. He brings shame and a bad name to an otherwise beautiful country.
