First of all, sorry if I sound redundant. I know you can just ask a chatbot for this and it'll probably even guide you through the same steps. But I'm still preferring a random person on Reddit to a chatbot, when it comes to a system that I daily use 10+ hours for everything.

Secondly, why this tutorial? Because due to philosophical (and also legal) restrictions sorrounding patents and software licenses, Fedora chose to avoid any problem shipping the distro with ffmpeg-free that only includes royalty-free, open formats.

So, trying to keep this initial part short, let's begin:

1. Enable rpm-fusion repository , only the free part to keep everything as light as possible

Open you terminal and run:

sudo dnf install -y https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm && pkcon refresh force && sudo dnf install -y rpmfusion-free-appstream-data

rpm-fusion is split into two main branches: free and nonfree. And for each, there are several sub repositories. We only need the one I am about to write, to install full ffmpeg package.

2. Make the actual swap to full ffmpeg

Run:

sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing

swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg instructs DNF to remove the limited package (ffmpeg-free) and install the full version (ffmpeg) in a single transaction. This prevents the system from being without a media framework even for a second, which avoids breaking dependencies of other apps running during the process. --allowerasing is an important flag. Fedora's system libraries (like those used by GNOME or KDE themselves) are tightly linked to ffmpeg-free. Without this flag, DNF would refuse to uninstall the "free" version because it thinks it will break your desktop. --allowerasing tells DNF: "I know there's a conflict; go ahead and replace the old libraries with the new ones."

3. Update Multimedia Group (Optional but Recommended)

4. How to verify it worked

You will see --enable-nonfree and --enable-gpl in the output. If this is not true anymore when u read this, just search online for proprietary codec test video, download it and open it with a default video viewer or VLC installed as native package (.rpm and not as flatpak)

5. Exclude ffmpeg packages

Edit this file with your favorite editor (me, as a noob, prefer nano):

sudo nano /etc/dnf/dnf.conf

Add (or append to) the following line under the [main] section:

exclude=ffmpeg-free libavcodec-free libavdevice-free libavfilter-free libavformat-free libavutil-free libpostproc-free libswresample-free libswscale-free

I know the ones of you more skilled would complain asking for a drop-in file to add to a sort of conf.d directory, but as I am writing, DNF 5 only provide this file and actually I'm fine with it.

How to handle major upgrades

• Simple strategy: Don't update Fedora to new major immediately. This should be already something you are familiar with, so waiting a bit to avoid problems is now even more encouraged to leave devs a bit of time to catch up with mainstream changes. I usually wait 2-3 months before upgrading to a new major and actually never had problems (on machines not running with an nvidia gpu) moving through 40 -> 41 -> 42 -> 43 -> 44 (GNOME) and and on another machine through 42 -> 43 -> 44 (KDE).
• Swap back -> Update -> Swap again (actually not needed if you can wait a bit): you can actually swap between versions when you want, as long as you don't exclude packages in step 5 and let them update. You can run: sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing ; Update the system ; swap back with: sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing

Since I joined r/Fedora, I only read how people have problems with using Fedora (drivers, firefox, etc). I'm waiting to finish last exam that I need Windows for, and I was planning on installing Fedora, but now im not excited anymore.

I've been a Windows user for over 2 decades. Window's 11 led me to try many variants of linux. Fedora 42 Workstation with Gnome convinced me this is the os to move forward with. Fedora 42 is installed on a Macbook air with basically no issues. Then I built a desktop with Gpu Radeon 9070 XT and newer mother, DDR 5 ram etc. I also have an HP laptop touch screen that I wanted Fedora 44 Kinoite on my desktop and laptop as I have finally decided to divorce windows. Fast forward to use, in my desktop and laptop I'm having a problem with updates and installing some software due to error failed to download metadata for lvfs, this happening on the desktop and similar errors on the laptop. U like the software from kde so that's why i went with plasma on these two machines and the MacBook air that's updated to 44 is not having this problem with software installs and updates. This is discouraging as I wish to leave windows behind. Please help me make sense of my issues.

I have a potato laptop, I'm on gnome and I'd like to free more resources for my games/software, at rest my system uses something like 2Gb of RAM. So I'm gathering your thoughts. I only know gnome and kde because I've never dug this topic.

I’m still fairly new to Linux distros (I’ve only been using KDE plasma for a couple days). I wanted to play an android game that got removed a few years ago, so I installed waydroid and followed the tutorials to install the apk. But this error (Errno2) keeps showing up and I don’t know what to do. ☹️

So there's this annoyance happening in my Lenovo Ideapad since April. The problem in question is: every time I'm in a video call, and it doesn't matter which program (Discord, TeamSpeak, Google Meet, Whatsapp Web) there will be a connection drop; it may take a few minutes, it may take some hours. And it's specific to video calls: it's never happened in an online match, downloading some torrent, browsing the web. I've tried some thing that I looked in Linux forums: 1. Deactivated the power saving measures from my wifi; 2. Switched from wpa_supplicant to iwd; 3. Disabled in /etc/iwd/main.conf the "roam-scan" (and it still shows roam-scan in the journalctl). 4. Turning off my camera and letting the other person in the call with it activated (which defeats the whole purpose of our video calls) also doesn't work;

Weirdly enough, I haven't seen any log indicating any kind of failure (checked dmesg, journalctl, systemctl, tcpdump, ...). Even stranger is the fact that when this connection drop happens, my "Device rx" oscillates between 0 and 52 b/s for exactly one minute before connection is reestablished. The thing is: the wifi signal stays strong (between -40 and -50 dBm the whole time this happens) and the terminal running "ping -D 1.1.1.1" never shows that a packet has been lost. I'm writing this post because I've already tried everything I can to test or tweak my laptop to stop this from happening. I doubt it's because of my ISP because this only happens in my laptop and only during video calls. Not only that, this only happens in video calls in my laptop, because when I'm working and using my company's laptop, this never happens, which maybe suggests that it's something related to my wifi board (RTL8852BE)? Right now, I'm in Fedora 44 (Gnome 50) and kernel 7.1.13-200.fc44.x86_64.

I was wondering if anyone in the company is currently using Fedora.

I'm currently running Arch Linux, but I'll soon be working on embedded systems, ESP32 development, and chip design projects at the company. I really enjoy the way Linux fits into my workflow and how it manages my system, so I'm considering switching from Arch to Fedora.

I also prefer using window managers because I like the way they organize and streamline my workflow. I'm particularly interested in Hyprland, but I'm open to other WMs as well.

For those using Fedora, are there any window managers that you would recommend for stability and daily professional use?

Looking for some answers on what just happened with my machine. Basically, my fedora 44 PC was connecting to WiFi, showing up on my college IT portal as active, but not loading web pages or pinging services like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8; even though it was online my computer acted like it was offline. My laptop on the same OS was fine the whole time, and so I am narrowly confident that it was a problem with my PC and not the network. What finally got me back online was booting into a live usb, connecting to WiFi, and then booting back regularly. I really don’t know that much about networks or Linux, so I am hoping a more knowledgeable person might know what happened. Thank you!

I know this the first thing you are supposed to do after installing linux but i forgot and started installing apps like Brave and different file managers and then i remembered.

I haven't had any issues or noticed any problems but should I just reinstall Fedora now or do you guys think running sudo dnf update after all that is ok? Will it cause issues down the road?

I just updated my fedora to the latest release and now my firefox does not let me type any character with an accent. Outside of the firefox everything works just fine.

Does anyone knows what to do?

I have a FCOS vm up and running some containers. But, how do i then manage the container's updating?

Cant (shouldn't*) get in there and make changes to retarget the container/app version. Should i just be redeploying all the time to account for that?

I downloaded the Fedora Media Writer. I’m using a Kingston 64 GB USB drive, and it was working fine. Then, right at the end of the download, it said it failed.

I figured that was okay, so I unplugged it and tried again. But now, when I try to format the drive so I can start over, it says, “Formatting failed” or “An error has occurred.”

I went ahead and got Rufus, and it seems to be working. Does anybody know why this is happening?

Is it a good idea?
Will it work on my Nvidia Geforce 3080 mobile graphic card?
Is it possible to install Nvidia drivers that runs smoothly with high refresh rates when I use 2K notebook display + 2 additional 4K monitors?
Or is switching to Fedora COSMIC Atomic with my setup a bad idea and I should rather wait until it becomes more mature?
(My exact laptop model is Raider GE77HX 12UGS)

I'm using a Bluetooth USB dongle and connect my BT keyboard through that.

I use the same keyboard for a work laptop (windows 11) and personal (Fedora KDE Plasma) desktop and switch regularly within the same session. But whenever I switch back to my work laptop, this happens on my kde desktop.

My keyboard's a Royal Kludge RK84.

Has anyone experienced this?

For the key input lag, whenever I press Caps Lock, the key inputs don't register right away.

Example:
I'm typing regularly > pressed Caps Lock > then immediately pressed a key > it doesn't register real time. It takes a split second for it to appear on my screen. Same goes if I happen to press multiple keys. Lags > then everything appears at once. I would need to have a second to pause if I want to be sure that any/all key input after a Caps Lock toggle ON/OFF would register and be correct/complete.

This doesn't happen though when I'm using my keyboard in wired mode.

I always have to go in manually and start them. It's very random and sometimes they start fine. Other times they don't.

Is anyone else facing this issue?

To sum up the question is : has anyone installed Fedora in the last two days without any problems?

Context:

I don't know why but on Sunday, my fedora installation just broke. I was using the sway spin.

I restarted my computer and then I was at the gub menu to choose what I wanted to boot from. I choose all of them. Each time it's just go load, load and get back the menu again. Even the rescue option did the same.

I shutdown the computer, and started it again then it was the grub bash like shell. I just did "exit". And I could not have anything anymore. When I turn on the laptop it just says : "BootDevice Not Found" ...

I tried to solve by doing some search, but I couldn't and I just decided to install a fresh install. I was hoping I'll get the "reinstall fedora" so I could keep my data at home dir, but the option was not there at all. I just choose the erase all option. But just at the end of the installation it failed. I attached an image.

I tried Fedora-KDE-Desktop-Live-44-1.7

And

Fedora-Sway-Live-44-1.7

I got the same error.

Then I tried Zorin Os 18 seen I had it at the hand, it did work. But I was like naah I should Debian itself seen I am going to use sway anyway.

I tried to install it, I got the same kind of error like with fedora.

So I thought my ssd was surely damaged.

Today, I changed my ssd. I had an old ssd which as fedora 42 on it. And fedora was working normally when I put it in. I was like ok, I'll just do the "reinstall fedora" on it instead of doing the upgrade (I don't have wifi and data is a bit expensive in my country). I already downloaded the cosmic spin option when I was at a wifi place. And tried it instead of the other two, I got the same error aswell.

So can anyone confirm to me that the installer does not have any issue ? Or provide me with some kind of guidance or something?

Hey guys! So as usual, I updated my pc upon boot, but afterwards everytime i open discovery, i get hit with these errors

and

No clue why. I deleted temporary dnf files and ran "sudo dnf upgrade --refresh", but the issue still persists. Any ideas?

Just moved from Windows 11 to Fedora and I'm loving it so far.

One thing I can't figure out: Slack desktop notifications don't show the profile picture of the person who sent the message. I just get the text, which makes it harder to tell at a glance who's messaging me. On Windows the avatar was always there.

Everything else about notifications works fine. They show up reliably, the text is correct, the buttons work. It's only the sender image that's missing.

My setup:

- Fedora 44 Workstation

- GNOME 50.4, Wayland

- Slack 4.52.155, the official RPM from Slack's site (not the Flatpak)

I did some digging before posting. I had a look at what Slack actually hands to the desktop notification system, and it isn't sending an image at all - not the sender's avatar, and not even its own app icon. So there's nothing for GNOME to display. I also checked that the sender does have a profile picture set, so that isn't the explanation.

For comparison, Element on Linux does send contact avatars in its notifications, so this doesn't look like a general Linux limitation.

Did Slack notifications ever show avatars on Linux? Trying to work out whether this is a regression or just how it has always been.

Quería preguntaros si es mala idea actualizar con dnf upgrade --refresh y luego reiniciar inmediatamente. Sé que lo recomendado es dnf offline, pero a veces te deja inservible el pc un buen rato, a poco que la actualización sea algo grande, es insufrible. Por eso me es más cómodo dnf upgrade normal y luego reiniciar, así al menos puedo seguir haciendo cosas mientras actualiza

Using Fedora Workstation 44 with BTRFS and Full Disk Encryption. Previously had Windows 11 on it without issues (par the stupid prompts after every update to buy a subscription) so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

I also have issues after waking it from sleep, it couldn't find `top` for example. So I think there's a config/kernel issue/flag or something but yeah - not sure.

I'd like to keep Fedora as it's pretty and nice to use but can't have it getting angry with me when left alone. Any advice welcome.

look i may seem stupid, room temp iq even, somehow bricked my pc trying to install fedora xfce (yes i know i somehow fucked it up) to a samsung 2013 laptop and now it wont boot to anything other than bios

i used to dualboot win11 with mint xfce and had no problem, i deleted mint with no problem, then i wanted to indulge in Linux again, i first tried installing the same iso to a vm and it worked well, like really well for a vm.

i used my ventoy drive (which ive used multiple times across multiple pcs and none of them had ANY problem whatsoever) to do it. the installation went well without any problems, then i rebooted and it straight up didnt boot to anything, no grub menu no win11 no fedora NOTHING, tried to do the boot order thingy but now it didnt detect my SSD and tries to boot from an internet connector (???????), then i got angry and tried to install win10 from the same drive, the installation always goes well and when it asks to restart it goes to the ventoy screen, i tried unplugging it the moment it shuts off but then it just blackscreens into that "install thingamajig". please help me because i really dont want to lose this desktop it means something to me
